...lx 'NA.f Q 62? JOHN H. CLEARY Principal l This year, as we see new classrooms, shops, and other buildings built, improved and modified, we should get a feeling that new growth and development is taking place at our school. ln our country when we get this feeling, we lift our heads with pride. We believe everything in this country of ours should be bigger and better. This is The American Way. The students of the EUHS will remember the year of l956-57 as the year when many new buildings were constructed. They will always treasure this memory and be happy with the thought that their school grew while they were here. Fine buildings are a part of what it takes to make a school vital, alive, and useful. What else is necessary to make a building a school? It takes people too. This includes teachers, students, parents, and many other people throughout the community and the state to help support and to guide the school. Besides having buildings and people in a school, we need knowledge. Knowledge is made up of two inseparable parts, ideals and ideas. To have true progress in life, that is, to really learn and enjoy life, people must learn and accept their reasonable share of both ideas and ideals together. These two are like ham and eggs, bread and butter, mother and father, and the Earth and the Sun. To fully understand and appreciate either, you must have a share of both. Having buildings, people, and knowledge for a school, we now must have one more essential ingredient -- thought. One of the wisest men this country ever produced, William James, said, Human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of thought. We should all realize that this was one of the greatest discoveries ever made by man. Here is a challenge hurled at each of us. Schools were set up to help young people accept this challenge and to provide ways and means for them to make this discovery for themselves. However, each of us must make this discovery limprove our thinkinglg and then put our thinking to full use. CAN YOU DO THESE TWO THINGS? if
