MUSIC Music, they say, has charms to sooth the savage beast. It also has the power to arouse primitive urges . . . urges that began with the dawn of civilization and that civilization has since covered with her veneer. Liking almost every type of music, I thoroughly enioy every minute that I spend listening to heavy classics, humming light classical and semi- popular melodies, or dancing to old standards. But it is the Latin rhythm music that coniures up the iungle for me. To liken music to a woman, it is at these moments she is a siren . . . now brazen and tempestuous, then sultry and sensuous . . . she sways her admirers first to one mood and then to another Her voice is many- sided, the inflections in it, usually 'blended into one weird potpourri, sometimes escape to reveal the clicking of castinets, haughtily retorting to the other instruments, or the swishing and rattling of the maracas and tambourines, playfully teasing her admirers, or perhaps the bold trilling of a flute. Her voice has mellowed with age, but the most imponant note still remains. . .the throbbing and reverberating of drums. Eleanor Bomze-'59 SOMEONE, SOMEWH ERE, SOMEHOW The world is churning heedlessly, but Hark! There's stirring underneath which foretells much, As if some power far above doth mark, A signifying deed for human touch. The rumbling, rolling, tossing, churning night Of worldly power, kingdoms, self and greed, Has found this earth in almost godless plight, Now searching for a Someone to replant the seed Which could regain some feeling for a world of trust, SUMMER THUNDERSTORM A lull, a breeze then the trees Begin to sway this way, that way. Now comes the rain to sooth the pain And bring light mirth to all the earth. Ann Morse-'58 And blaze again a trail to follow fast Replacing thoughts of gold that turn to rust To gather good in life before 'tis past. When human love replaces lust, and finds the key, Then sunlight clear, vmay shine on earth eternally. Eliza beth Fel lowes-'58 FU ES MORT Soft and still lay the wall of night. There was nothing, yet it was not empty, but strangely complete. A light appeared, falling endlessly through space, A chill swept by, and death had touched me. Judith Keller-'59 J.. . ... -. . -. .-.-if --.-2-:ff V .... .... ... -.- ....V..-4. -f WHY READ With life moving at such a fast tempo, why take time which could be devoted to other things, to read books? Books provide restful enjoyment and subiects for conversation, but best of all they provide causes for you to think and reason. A book with vivid description gives wings to-your imagination, while a book with a wise old man in it makes you wonder what strange power makes chil- dren adore him. Books can capture you and carry you away to foreign countries and exciting adventure, and they can give you the clue to understanding people and discovering the world about you. Having spent a busy week without taking time to relax and think just for the sake of thinking, read a book of humorous anecdotes and see how quickly your whole outlook on life can change. There are books for every mood and personality . . . books to teach, cheer, encourage, calm and amuse, books for persons who love nature, adventure, people or places. Why read? Read to understand people, enioy life and share experi- ences. Read because books give you a wealth of knowledge which is yours for a lifetime. CAPTURED Breeze! chase my brow's sweat, The robber of my mind's work. Love is the tangle of its path, Repelling all its higher worth. Heart! do not live within my head, In the bosom you should feast. Don't tie in knots, my clear ideas. Let me loose from this thy lease. Fly away and give to waiting, while l give my mind its food. Glenda F. Davis-'58 Ann Berry-'59 HALFWAY A LITTLE LONGER Alone within himself, he Ever reached out with hesitant Fingers to touch another life, But afraid of being thought a fool, Withdrew his hand and Closed his eyes against the world Too soon to see the hand Outstretched iust short of his. Judith Keller-'60 1 -'W -'fi '-f , OF THE SEA The form sank swiftly to the dark unknown As waves beat softly on the wooden beams. The ship moved on with iust a silent groan, And those aboard were lost in plaintive dreams. The sea once more accepts the humbled dead. Those laid to rest are cast into its fold, To make a grave of its profoundest bed, With rest and peace forever to behold. But, deep beneath its everchanging tide, The countless lifelike creatures therein dwell, Though many are the secrets it must hide, It shall not ever be allowed to tell. When I behold the silent sea at rest, I think of all the life within it blessed. John Dompkouski-'58 STORM The lights are off in the theatre, forming a dramatic setting for the scene that is about to take place. A dancer wearing a brilliant yellow cos- tume leaps onto the stage performing its wild and erratic movements followed by a loud roar of drums. As the act reaches its climax, the reverberations of the drums quicken, and the emotional dancer breaks into tears. Exhausted, the dancer falters and fades into the shadows. Rebecca Bacon-'60 DESTRUCTION Early in the morning with the first streak of dawn The forest awakens-fox, squirrel and fawn. Away to the Northland an antlered head sees The magical beauty which thrives midst the trees. He stands like a statue, so seldom in fear, He listens, all-knowing, as sounds reach his ear: A loud bang! A rifle report! The hunter-just killing for sport. Hatred and fury burned deep in his heart, He sped down the slope like a flashing dart. He sighted the hunter directly ahead. He was going to trample him till he was dead! The buck came upon him and the hunter fell down. The buck reared again, but there on the ground . . The man grabbed his rifle and lifted his head: Another report! and the brave buck fell dead. Sarah Will-iams -'60 V, l? H', - ' 'F' THE EYES SAW ALL With a hint of surprise in their usual stern tranquillity, the eyes stared downward from the walls of the huge room. The room had not been a victim of the electric bug and was lighted by a fire of medieval size. Its light, reflected by odd, greatly-ornamented lanterns, cast shadows of the creatures from whence the stares came. From these shadows the shapes of a moose, deer, and several fowl were recognized. A polar bear rug lay in front of the hearth. Its legs pointed to each corner of the room. The stares of the eyes were concentrated on a form sprawled across a foreleg. Occasionally flames spurted up giving off light enough so that features of the form were distinguished-a high fore- head, dark straight hair, and short stubbly whiskers, the clothes, a typical hunting outfit. After more flames gave forth light, blood was seen push- ing its way out from a hole in his left chest pocket. Dripping down his side it left a permanent stain on the bear's whiteness. The quiet of the room was not disturbed by groan or gasp. The man was dead! Lying near his left side was the murderer, a hunting rifle. It sparkled and twinkled in the fire light like the eyes of a pleased person, a man happy to end his life or a murderer cheered to minus one enemy. Ann Cross--'60 IN MEMORY ONLY The snow like stardust filled the skies Falling everywhere, And winter winds made anguished cries But we, we didn't care. The world was ours, for we could soar, Together we were free, Together we had this and more . . . Our skies gave liberty. As I recall that perfect day, Its wonder and its thrill, So like a dream, and in a way I wonder, was it real? Dale Denham-'61 ODE TO CHRISTMAS The fields are whiTe, for lo The winTer's here And The day, of ioyousness and praise.
