First, we hope that our hardworking students make it to school on time - Amy, Valerie, Stacey, Chris and Aarik ... just to name a few. If these people do happen to make it on time, you will see them and others lounging on the stairs in front of the senior lockers. Or, you may find a few in the locker rooms “finishing up their homework.” And just as the bell is about to ring you can see Melanie and Bonta rushing to make class. As the morning draws to a close, it’s time for lunch. Even though the seventh graders are last in the lunch line, you will see them running down the Halls of EHS. In the afternoon, the people on work release leave at different times. Joe finally applied for work release when his notes ran short. The remaining students eagerly await the final bell, so they can go their separate ways to prepare themselves to be set free to conquer the “Real World.” Seniors Class Motto Life is a journey, not a destination. We’ve been through it all in those thirteen years, and now that it’s time to say goodbye. It brings some tears. It brings memories good and bad: If you had feelings for that special person, the whole class was planning a wedding. If two different opinions would collide, we would all take sides. Lisa Ring Scott Jasinski Deb Perkins 12 Seniors An Elite Legacy Do you remember our freshmen year hiding behind houses because the senior girls were being grouches? Remember what happened on the weekends, and the rules that we could not bend? Or walking side by side down the gym floor realizing you won’t have to come into that school anymore? I want to laugh, I want to shout, I want to let these feelings out! It’s the end of our thirteen years, and it brings some tears ... and new fears. Karen Miller Mark Miller Valerie Due Jim Due Dustin Weber Brenda Michl Seniors 13 Juniors Adventurous, Lively, Creative, Crazy, Showoffs, Small, Restless, Supportive, Athletic, Smart, Harmonious, leaders Juniors at EHS have a huge responsibility to the students. They have to put on Prom. To raise enough money for the Prom is a tough job. The whole class has to be dedicated to selling door to door. It’s hard work, but you’re glad you work so hard when you see the finished product in the spring. Also, being a junior you have to prepare for your senior year. You have to organize your classes and start to get a look into the future. Your junior and senior years are the hardest years in High School, but at EHS you can make , them the most fun, too!!! Athletics were a big part for us, we had three starters on the Volleyball team and our guys showed great potential in Football. We had two girls start on the basketball team and four sophomore guys played varsity basketball. Academical- ly we had abilities but were still working on them. We also showed potential in the drama and music departments. The class of 90’ loved to have a good time but will prove itself during its next two years at EHS. The entire class tries to impress the cam- era. Junior High. What can we say but O-WOW. What do they do but hang in limbo. They are no longer children and not yet teenagers. They do, however, achieve great success in athletics. By working together, the football team crushed two of their opponents, Deshler (30-0) and Marquette (60-0). Their losses were to Polk-Hordville (8- 42) and (6-22). They ended their season with a 2-2 record. In basketball, both teams won the Southern CRC Championship, their only season loss came in the CRC Playoffs. Both teams ended their season in second place in the conference. The track teams attended four meets. Girls track placed 8th, 5th, 5th, and 4th. Christy Schwab set a record in the 1200m run with a time of 4:20. Boys track placed 4th, 1st, 3rd, and 4th. Jon Nichols set a school record in the open 400 with a time of 55.49. The Exeter High School’s Faculty, Administration, and Staff. Now that is a mouth full. Coming from Mrs. Henning and the Cooks in the elementary to the Big Guy in the air conditioned office. Some of the old-timers claim they have seen it all, but there is more to look forward to in the future with this rowdy bunch. Mr. Shafer thought he had seen it all when Lynne Heffelfinger wrote down the word bear. Mrs. Fette had a new experience with a feathered friend in College Prep English. It is always a refreshing experience for Miss Faris when she helps with Prom every year. The Junior Class sponsor and Faithful trooper Mrs. Tauriella received her dose of prom week and, like those who came before her, she survived. And will the seniors ever let Mr. Evans forget the correct pronunciation of salivate. But we must admit it was not a new experience for the Cooks when they had to clean up a whole plate of Spaghetti because Chris Shaw dropped it. Our Fun loving Cooks did, however, enjoy the tricks they pulled on Jeff Underwood “Tator tots in the blanket” and “Icicle lasagna.” And to our newer faculty members we wish you good luck, you may need it. The seniors would like to thank the faculty, staff, and administration for putting up with their gruff and grumbles over the years, it takes real talent! Our Bus Drivers; Tim Wilbeck, Bob, John, and Sharon Mueller. Each of these people deserve a medal for surviving the rowdiness of EHS. A lone quarterback sits nervously in an empty locker room, contemplating his strategy. He has heard rumors of an Eagle Secret Weapon. It has been referred to as “The Wall” As the leader of the team he must head the assault. So many teams have challenged “The Wall” and fallen like Humpty-Dumpty, cracked and crumpled. Thanks to Scott “Cornerstone” Jasinski and the rest of the Eagle line, the victims out number the victors. Quarterbacks Ben Horne, Aarik Jensen and Mark Becker provided the Eagles with a strong passing game with 79 completions 164 attempts for 1151 yards and 13 TDs. Yard hungry rushers Matt Manning (438yds), Darin Hassler (278 yds), Aarik Jensen (204 yds), Ben Horne (155yds), and John Bonta (87yds), provided the Eagles with a total of 1332 rushing yards. The Eagles out scored their opponents 291-144. They finished their season with a 7-2 Elite Record. Football 31 10 ,Y High Hopes Lost Dreams The Volleyball season began with high hopes and dissolved into lost dreams as a case of misdirected dedication robbed the team of five players. The seniors did their best to convince the underclassmen that the season is not over until it is over. They led the team through some tough matches, giving it their all, victory was not meant to be theirs this year. The Team ended their Elite effort with a 6-9 record. The Eagles won a holiday tournament hosted by Fairmont early in the season. They beat class C-l Hebron in the opening game by one point. They won the tournament by beating Fairmont in the finals. The Lady Eagles went on to win three more tournaments. The final game of the CRC tournament was a repeat of the last three years. The McCool Mustangs tried to avenge themselves, but the Lady Eagles were too tough for them. Next, the Eagles were in Geneva for the Sub-District tournament. They defeated Meridian in the first round and had to meet up with the Mustangs again. The Eagles prevailed once again and advanced to the district tournament in Wilber-Clatonia. It was here that the Lady Eagles were to meet up with the Sterling Jets. The Eagles out flew the Jets and beat them with a score of 62-44. After the long game and everyone was loaded on to the bus, Coach Fitzgerald told our bus driver “To head this bus to Lincoln!” The boys on the Student Council arranged a royal send off for the Lady Eagles. The booster moms decorated the school with posters and good luck wishes. The student managers loaded the bus with everything the team could possibly need. The school Custodian is still wondering what happened to the sink in the girls locker room. Sharon Mueller our bus driver, trained by husband Bob, got us to our destination with no problem. Athletic Banquet, Music Banquet, Honors Night 49 C c Year Of Memories Royalty, Nerds, Maroon, Homecoming, Formals, Wonderland, Spectacular, Prom, Snooze Queens, Lost Duo, Senior Sneak, Accomplishments, Friend- ships, Goals, Graduation. Teenagers are social animals. They like nothing better than to talk and hang out with their friends. School is where they do it best; their greatest challenge is to see how far they can push this casual attitude before hostility erupts. There are special events during the school year that cater to this crowd. Homecoming, the first of four events, is for the snappy dresser, the wild bunch, and the royal cats. The second, Prom, is the senior reward for working so hard the year before. It is a week of slave labor for the juniors. Actually, it is a labor of love because you have to love your class to work so hard. It is a living sculpture brought to life for one night. It can be as spectacular as the juniors can imagine. The third, Senior Sneak, is a time to torture Mr. and Mrs. Shafer. It was a one day trip to Worlds of Fun and some big city shopping. The fourth, Graduation, the final social event of the year. It is a day for cheers and tears. The teachers and seniors can be seen doing both. The First senior leaving the gym wipes his brow with a sigh of relief. I wonder why? Each event carries with it a mind full of memories, some tricky like King Scott’s chocolate kiss, wet like Prom’s water works, and wilk life, tiring like Senior Sneak’s trip to Kansas City, and just friendly like Joe carrying Valerie in his arms during Graduation practice Wednesday. It has been an Elite year of memories, and just think, this is just the beginning for the Class of ’88. Mr. Shafer resting up for a full day with the seniors on the Senior Sneak trip to Kansas City, (photo by Joe Coffey) Homecoming Homecoming is sponsored by the Student Council. They discovered that preparation is everything. President Melanie Ruhl organized the council with help from sponsor Supt. Richard Becker. They had a lot to arrange - a special dress-code for the week, the pep rally, the half-time ceremonies and the dance. The Homecoming theme was “Back to Paradise.” Monday started things off with a come as you are extravaganza, with everything from mixed clothing to cowboys in their long underwear. Tuesday brought a switch between the boys and the girls. Wednesday was the direct result of an Invasion of the Nerds. Thursday was a day to dress-up. Friday everything was maroon and white. School was shortened on Friday for a Community Pep Rally. The Pep Rally involved a sophomore version of the Newlywed Game, an elementary debate between “offense” and “defense”, a Mr. Legs contest complete with garters, and a volleyball rendition of “Big Bad Leroy Rat.” There was only one sporting event on Friday night, a football game with Macy, which we won 56-8. The weather was kind to the coronation ceremonies. Everything went smoothly including King Scott Jasinski’s Kiss, which proved to be chocolate. The dance was held in the multipurpose room. The Student Council worked long hours on the decorations, which consisted of a large mural complete with black palm trees and a mass of colorful streamers. The music was slow, romantic, fast, wild and loud. The dancers were tired by the end of the evening. Until next year its back to paradise. However, fund raising usually begins during freshman year and continues through the fall of their junior year. The Class of ’89 financed their Prom by selling cups and magazine subscriptions, sponsoring a soup supper and assisting Norm’s Shur Save with their inventory. Raising money for Prom is hard work; it requires the class to work together as a team. If someone fails to pull their weight, someone else must pick up the slack. The class of ’89 discovered that if everyone would do just that — Prom would be a success! With all the fund raising completed and the money tallied, the juniors chose their theme — Just Between You and Me and their colors — Silver and Blue. A wish list was made and priorities determined. Norm’s Catering was hired to photograph Prom. Ambush was hired to supply the musical entertainment. Although the juniors started decorating in the small gym a week before Prom, decorating preparations began two months earlier. The murals, bridge, and fountain were made prior to Prom week. Once the juniors were allowed in the gym to decorate, everything stayed pretty close to schedule. As the week progressed, visions of ropes, wires and juniors hanging from the rafters could be seen. Streamers and balloons soon covered these. A lit garden complete with waterfall and stream appeared from the gym floor. The paintings were hung on the walls with care. By Saturday, 49 golden fish were swimming in the stream. The small gym had been transformed into a romantic wonderland. Everyone was surprised that such a small group had managed to create this Prom dream. Prom ’88 was to experience a few recent firsts: A live Band, Wildlife, Polkas, A last dance at midnight, A lack of destruction, 1500 balloons, Video taping of Prom and a Post Prom Party. The Juniors would like to thank all the people who made Prom possible. Senior, Melanie Ruhl, having fun with her friends. Although the bus was scheduled to leave at 5:00 a.m., the Senior Trip to Kansas City was put on hold until the two snooze queens arrived. The first to show up was Melanie Ruhl at 5:15. She had thrown a change of clothes and her make-up into a bag and then made the long trek across the street to the school in sweatpants and a T-shirt. As she stepped onto the bus, Dustin Weber greeted her with his rendition of “Wake Up to Missouri”. The other late arrival, Valerie Due, showed up at 5:30. Her Reasons? With everyone loaded, Bob Mueller started the bus and left for Kansas City. On the way, they stopped for breakfast at the Hen House in Rockport, Missouri. After leaving Rockport, Sharon Mueller drove for about an hour at which time the bus needed to be refueled. As she pulled off 1-29, the bus refused to get into the right gear. Hero Husband Bob rescued his fair lady and drove the “Obviously more fond of Bob bus” the remaining miles to Kansas City. Despite the early hour, Glen Harre was wide awake. He was making sure everyone else remained awake with his ever famous “Wake Up Call!” Glen “Wake Up Call” Harre fell asleep himself after he woke up the entire group. The “Obviously more fond of Bob bus” arrived at Worlds of Fun. Everyone was still a little sleepy. Estelle “Terrified of Amusement Park Rides” Ekeler awoke with a start as a nightmare came to life. The Orient Express loomed above her. It appeared to be smiling at her through the bus window. As she was peeled from the bus, Glen Harre and Melanie Ruhl insisted she ride the Orient Express. The look on her face! Glen and Melanie with Estelle in tow lead the way to the Orient Express. To everyone’s disappointment, the lines were outrageously long. To Estelle’s relief, everyone went their own way until 4:00, when everyone was to meet back at the bus. Estelle tried to escape the clutches of Glen and Melanie. They became a trio, and Glen and Melanie did manage to get Estelle on the rides. Once again Melanie “Wake Up to Missouri” Ruhl and Valerie “Reasons?” Due managed to make the bus wait. This time, Valerie picked up a sidekick, Amy “We got Lost” Lee, our lost duo turned up at 4:15. Not to be outdone by the lost duo, the tardy trio - Estelle “No Longer Terrified of Amusement Park Rides” Ekeler, Glen “Wake up Call” Harre and Melanie “Wake Up to Missouri” Ruhl arrived at 4:30. Thirty minutes after the scheduled departure time, Bob drove the “Obviously still fond of Bob bus” to the shopping mall. To Mr. Shafer’s surprise, the shopping crazed teens of Exeter High School did not wish to stay long at the mall although Valerie “Reasons?” Due and Lisa “Shop until you Drop” Ring did manage to make a few brief purchases. Lack of sleep or home-sickness caused the seniors to call it a day. So, the “definitely more fond of Bob bus” returned home with the Class of 1988. Is this Glen “Wake Up Call” Harre or a Snooze King? 56 Senior Sneak Lisa King and Valerie showing off their Jeff Underwood, your arms go in the purchases from the mall. sleeves. Class Motto: Life is a journey, Not a destination. Graduation is only one of many steps of the Journey of Life. After the seniors have celebrated their accomplishments, it is back on the road again. They make plans for the future. They strive for independence either alone or with a partner. Decisions require a lot of thought. Some of them will be joyous while others may be heartbreaking, so a little advice from family and friends can only help. Senior thoughts were given by Dustin Weber and Neal Thomsen. Dustin talked and sang of friendships, how shared memories will remain long after friends have grown apart, and the importance of goals, but one’s life should not be based solely on goals because unforeseen events can be destroy those goals. Such an experience was shared by Neal. Hugs of congratulations. Anxious Seniors await the ceremony that places them into the real world. •r 8 Graduation Senior Ensemble. The endsheets are medium beige (308). The first 16 pages were as- sembled with ease, while the rest of the book was assembled with care the help of dedicated annual staff members. Book Cost $15 to $20. 67 A snowy morning sparks the same question from a tardy teen and a strange visitor Valerie Due and John Bonta check the bird books. Where Am 8:05. Still asleep. How? The room was vibrating to the sound of firing cannons. The radio had been set as a joke to a classical station, which was presently playing the 1812 Overture. The curtains were open encouraging the sun to beat down on the sleeping teen. A woman could be heard yelling in the background, “It is time to get up!” “Your breakfast is getting cold.” “You will be late for school, again!” The final assault on our teenager came when the family pet decided to say good morning. A paw to the chest and a tongue to the cheek. Slurp!! Everything was against this teenager sleeping late. 8:07. An eye opened, slowly. In that instant, the teen jumped upward, the pet flew out of the room and the shouting began. “Yuck!!!!” The teen bellowed, “Where am I?” “Oh, my head!” “Where is the war?” “Who ever invented mornings should be slapped!” And so began another day for a college bound senior from Exeter High. 8:20. Mrs. Fette started her College Prep English Class without our tardy teen. After stopping in the office for an excused tardy slip, our teen springs to class followed by the other tardy cats. A split second after their arrival, a flutter came from the window. A strange looking visitor had landed outside on the ledge. Everyone was talking at once. Questions were flying. Mrs. Fette immediately recognized the research possibilities. She divided the class into groups, each trying to be the first to correctly identify the visitor. For the first time research was easy. Every possible reference was checked and double checked. Finally, its identity was confirmed. A female Prairie Chicken. Neal Thomsen makes sure Scott Jasinski looks in the right books.
