We got off to a slou start by losing to Davenport, 30 - 0, but bounced back by winning the next two games. 0 - 39, Dorchester, and 6-15 against Shickley. A Big morale disappointment for the team was our tie, 0 - 0, with Meridan. But again c made a come back and beat Bruning, 8-12. The game with Lawrence could’ve been an exact repeat of last year except the tables were turned as we lost, 38 - 28. Another Homecoming Victory was added to the books as Deshler fell at our hands, 0 - 6. The hcartbreaker of the year occurred at Friend as the Eagles fell to a powerful rival. 9 - 6, during the last lew seconds of the game. The season was concluded with a tic, 6 - 6, with Clay Center. Total points scored by Exeter was 106, the average per game being 11.5. The total points scored by opponents was 97 with a per game average of 10.7. Paul Hassler ran for the highest number of yards with a total of 959 while Dan Ekeler held the highest number of yards rushing with a total of 547. Gaining All Conference awards this year were: Dave Becker, Tom Ekeler, Dan Ekeler, with Dave also receiving an All State Honorable Mention award. Wes Fisher, Paul Hassler, and Rick Hall received all Conference Honorable Mention awards at the Pioneer Conference Playoffs. 52 Play Tough Ball Playing side by side for their fourth year in a row. finally paid off for Seniors. Dan Ekeler, Dave Becker, Tom Ekeler. Kelvin Jorgensen, and Rod Jensen, as they led Exeter to their best year in several years. Highlighting their season with four wins and ties with Conference Champ Meridian and State - ranked Clay Center - Exeter plowed through one of the toughest schedules around with a winning season. 53 Year In Basketball 1972 - 1973: Kneeling: Scott Manning, Coach Goodenough, Assistant Coach Smagacz, and Mike Winkler. Standing ■ front row: Robert Rhodes, Chip Adamson, Chuck Hansen, Student Managers - Ron Kuska and Don Mason, Kurt Beckler, Russ Weber, Paul Hassler, and Ken Soukup. Bottom row: Steve Carrigan, Tim Wellman, Kelvin Jorgensen, Rick Hall, Bill Crawford, and Steve Weber. Exeter started the season with a lot of spirit, a little less hair, and best of all a victory over Clay Center, 35 - 33. After losing close games to Chester and Meridian, Exeter came back to clobber the Milligan Roosters and give Exeter fans a fleeting feeling that this might finally be Exeter’s year. Troubles set in however, with four straight losses before Rick Hall and Kurt Beckler scoring 33 of Exeter’s 49 points pushed Exeter to a 49 - 42 victory over Bruning. Once again Exeter fell victim of four straight losses, with a low spot being a 100 - 36 drubbing by State Tourney bound Milford, before rebounding against a good Lawrence team with a thrilling 56 to 45 victory at home. A tough fought 4-point loss to Wilber brought a faint hope to a few die-hard Exeter fans that Exeter might have a chance against Milford in the Districts. However, all the hope and encouragement was of no help as Exeter lost to Milford, 71 - 39, completing their season. 55 Girls Take The 1972 - 1973 Volleyball team consisted of: Kneeling - Sandy Klemn, Sherry Krejci, Mary Coffey, Margie Manning. Mary Jane Underwood, Lauri Bonta, Sheila Spires, Norene Havel, and Kathy Kuska. Standing: Joyce Coffey, Clara Manning, Margaret Coffey, Peg Lrdkamp. and Donna Oates. The girls started out the season with high hopes of going to the newly organized State Tourney, but got sidetracked by other Pioneer Conference teams with the same idea. The team showed marked improvement over last year’s even with the younger members of the team seeing quite a bit of action on the court, picking up valuable aid which will help further the team's effort next fall. A few quick words of advice during a time out was all that was needed to pull the game through! Norene Havel was selected All - Conference - East, Honorable Mention, by the coaches of the Pioneer Conference. The Spotlight An All - Conference - East certificate was awarded Mary Jane Underwood at the Pioneer Conference Tourney. Here we find the girls going through one of their most strenuous exercises: rocking and rolling to the Beach Boys! Most of the Girls' Track Meets were cancelled because of frequent rains but they made a fine showing in the meets which out- lasted the rain and snow. Left to right: Diane Hall, Margaret Mueller, Margaret Coffey, Debbie Moravec, Carol Harrc, Sherry Krejci, Joyce Coffey, Standing: Kathy Kuska, Mary Coffey, Donna Oates, Mary Jane Underwood, and Student Managers - Doris Ekeler and Carolyn Krupicka. Thinclads Take 1973 Track Team consisted of: kneeling - Dave Becker, Kurt Oates. Dan Guthrie, Mike Winkler, Gary Fisher, Chris Manning, and Bill Crawford. Standing: Coach Goodenough, Alan Kovanda, Paul Hassler. Kurt Beckler, Tom Ekeler, Dan Ekeler, Kelvin Jorgensen, Brad Hoelscher. and Head Coach King. Although heavy spring rains kept the track team from taking part in quite a few meets they shone in the ones they did participate in. Outstanding perfor- mances were given by the 880-yard relay team (left) consisting of (left to right) Paul Hassler, Dan Guthrie, Brad Hoelscher, and Tom Ekeler which placed second at the district meet and Brad Hoelscher (near right) who placed in the 220-yard dash at districts. 58 To The Track 59 “Tee Off!” Standing: Coach Striggow, Robert Rhodes, Tom Bonta, Scott Manning. Brent Moore. Chip Adamson, Mark Manning, and Ron Kuska. This was the first year that golf has been offered as an extracurricular activity, but the first year golfers finished respectably in every meet. They attended ten golf meets and the District. Playing at such courses as Fairbury, Beatrice, Wymore, blastings, Geneva, and Seward, helped the players gain experience which will aid them next year. Chuck Hansen finished fifth in one meet to gain the individual high for the season and the team finished second at Seward as season high. The District Meet at Friend climaxed the season. The team consisted of six varsity players: Chuck Hansen, Chip Adamson, Robert Rhodes, Scott Manning, Mark Manning, and Brent Moore with four reserve players: Alan Michl, Tammy Jasinski, Julie Luzum, and Sarah Marek. 60 61 “Come Together’' You are you and I am I. You are not in this world to live up to my expectations. And I am not in this world to live up to yours. You are you and I am I. And if by chance we find each other, It’s beautiful. Frederick S. Perl “If a man does not keep pace with his com- panions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. Henry David Thoreau Another year has ended. We’re one year older, physically, mentally, and hopefully emotionally. Our horizons, activities, and circle of friends has expand- ed and even our ideas about life have changed. “Come Together did we actually accomplish this or was our apathy too great? Should we join organizations or support our team? 1973 was a year of inside change at EHS, retroactive and radical, which way to go, with the crowd-or as an individual? The decision was ours!
