EXETER HIGH SCHOOL EXETER, NEBRASKA THE EAGLE Foreword What makes our school so special to us and different from others? Could it be that cohesive force that binds a student body together in an all-for-one-and- one-for-allf' spirit? Elusive?-Yes. Intangible?-Yes. But made up of bits and parts which, when put together, spell pride--pride in the classrooms, on the football field, the basketball court, on the dance floor and in marching band. Day by day experiences which endear the school, spot-light our school years--times of friendship and fun—times to remember. Em- bracing all forces of pride and moments is Operation Atom in which each of YOU is es- sential. You have produced it through your participation in your class and school activities. Many cherished memories are between the covers of this volume. Keep it and hold dear what you will always be a part. Students Gain High School Principal Larsen, a busy teacher and administra- tor of Exeter High School, has maintained a busy schedule this last year. In addition to duties as high school principal, he taught business law, bookkeeping and economics. He was the Student Council sponsor.Mr. Larsen holds a B.A. from Dana and has done graduate work at the University of Nebraska. The year has had a few changes over last year with an addition of courses and teachers. The demanding need of society is a challenge that the board, administra- tion and faculty have been trying to meet by adding to the curriculum. It has been a joy working with the faculty and students dur- ing the past year. School is serious busi- ness and the more effort you put into obtain- ing the most out of an education the more you will receive in return. The first thing you are in school for is the subjects you take. If extra-curricular activities inter- feres with your subjects a wise person will cut down on them and put his efforts into the academic courses which he takes. 6 This past year Mr. Clarence Slosson has taught the seventh and eighth grades general science courses and physics to the Juniors and Seniors. The bus drivers have the great responsibility of getting us to school each day through rain or shine. The bus drivers this year were Frank Rouch, John Drommond, Mike Kubicek, Marvin Kubicek, Loyd Wadman, and Harold Schneider. After we get here, we see the orderly buildings and school grounds kept so by the janitors. As we come through the doors, we see the office secretary running to and fro taking care of the num- erous problems that arise in the office. The many necessary rules that we follow each day are made by the school board. After a morning of study and work, we enjoy the meal prepared by the five cooks. These jobs are held by the people behind the scenes, the people who make it possi- ble to have a school like ours. 10 ACTIVITIES John Erdkamp undergoes a physical change Judy Tauriella prepares Wanda Barkmeier for behind stage as Miss Kolar diligently applies her role as grandmother his make-up. Senior Class Play- Accidental Hero” A high school class, which is threatened by loss of extra-curricular frills, sets out to show its value by a bang-up presentation of a play. The young and perhaps too serious coach does strange things with the casting-albeit for noble reasons. The self-styled glamor girl finds herself cast as a scrubwoman. Tomboy Peggy is given the part of the grandmother, and John, who is interested only in chicken houses, is cast as the hero. Even Kitty, who is the heroine in the play, is unhappy. In the play, she is required to kiss the hero, and her father is running for the school board on a nonsmooching platform. Opening night produces a resounding success in which the sound-effects man, the prompter, and the school principal play leading roles. After the curtain falls, John's chick- en house is proclaimed a success, and the school keeps its frills. Alan Songster, as John, explains his revolution- Members of the cast talk over the depressing ary chicken house to the rest of the cast. ticket sales during the play. 12 TAURIELLA INSURANCE AGENCY EXETER, NEBRASKA Homecoming Queen Cheryl Wellman and Homecoming King Roger Drucker Homecoming Homecoming activities this year took place on October 2, 1964. The head table nervously awaits the starting of the program. Holland Bonket was the theme for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. This year the juniors chose the American Legion Hall as their setting for the Holland atmos- phere. The juniors, seniors, members of the faculty, janitors and cooks enjoyed a Hol- land inspired supper served by able members of the sophomore class. Other sophomores entertained the audience later with singing and dancing. Joe Harre, Pam Hansen, Cherlyn Johnson and Vern Kittinger gave brief Dutchy talks from the Junior class while Jim Walker, John Erdkamp showed their senior pride with messages of appreciation and gratitude for the banquet. Mr. Slosson brightened the evening as he spoke of the bridges yet to be crossed and left us with an optimistic look at the future. Later the Ravens furnished us with music for a dance that will dwindle in the minds of us all for many years to come. ORGANIZATIONS Pep Club Promotes Spirit Promoting school spirit is the main objective of the Pep Club. This organiza- tion uses pep rallies and a wide variety of methods to create a winning atmosphere at football and basketball games. The Pep Club assures athletes moral support whether they win or lose. In addition to this, the club sold booster pins and rib- bons to finance their various activities. All high school girls are eligible for membership in this organization. Cheerleaders are the spark behind the Pep Club. This year they attended a state-wide cheerleading clinic to broaden their skills. The four varsity cheerlead- ers and the four reserve cheerleaders werepopularly elected by the Pep Club on the basis of cheerleading ability and per- sonal appearance. These girls lead the band when it marched in the Lord's Acre Day Parade, the parade before the fire hall dedication in Cordova, Nebraska, and during halftime at the football games. j . To broaden their skills, the twirlers went to the annual Twirling Clinic at Syracuse Nebraska and learned many new routines to use at home with their band. ' Three of the twirlers will be graduating this year with the confidence that ; twirlers taught by the present ones will be taking their places. As an added attraction to the summer band concerts, the twirlers often had their pupils perform. These performances were enjoyed by all of the audience, they gave the girls experience, and made the teachers proud of their skills. The twirlers are sponsored by the Band Mothers. young t 25 The Student Council The Student Council started off the year with election of officers. We were defeated by Milford in a heartbreaking score of 18 to 0. Our first and only victory was Homecoming with the Bruning Bears. While the royalty watched, the mighty Eagles pulled ahead and won the memor- able game by a score of 14 to 7. The next disappointment in our football season during the Fairmont game was when John Erdkamp, a senior, broke his ankle. The best game of the season was played by the Eagles at Ceresco when they made an attempt at victory only to lose the game 14 to 6. The entire game was played in Eagle territory but yardage was extremely hard to obtain. Eagle fans can look forward to a more ex- perienced team next year with the return of many lettermen. Leon Harre leads the Eagles to an important tackle during the Clay Center game. Larry Becwar, aided by teammates, tackles a Wildcat opponent. To them there seems to be a million strange faces always staring at them everywhere they go. But as all freshmen do, they have come out of their daze and started to enjoy high school. The freshmen have participated whole- heartedly in their classes as well as in the other school activities. They have taken an active part in everything and enjoyed promo- tion of school activities and spirit. This was a typical freshman class. The first money-making project the fresh- men had was Slave Day. This started their fund which will increase through their high school years. At the end of the year, the freshmen took a trip to Lincoln and observed the State Track Meet. Bob Perkins was elected president; Doug Bonta, vice-president; and Ken Hulse, secretary-treasurer. Karen Krejci was elected as our representative to Student Council. Towards the end of the first semester, plans be- gan to form for the Junior High Invitational Basketball Tournament. A planning committee consisting of Larry Becwar, Gary Dumpert, Doug Bonta, LaDonna Widle, Karen Krejci, and Shirley Wellman, was appointed to appoint the smaller committees. Each person was giv- en a job and everyone worked to make the tournament a success. At the beginning of the second semester, new of- ficers were elected. Karen Krejci became our new pres- ident; Dave Drucker, vice-president; Gayla Wellman, secretary; and LaDonna Widle, treasurer; Kenn Hulse was elected to Student Council. By the end of February almost everything was in order for the tournament. The teams invited were Waco, Milligan, Dorchester, Ohiowa, and Exeter. On March 2, the first night of the tournament, things didn’t go quite as planned, but everything turned out all right any way. The next night there was a larger crowd to see the home team. The Exeter Eagles played Ohiowa and overcame their opponent. The final night, March 5, the sophomores considered themselves pros as we all expected our largest crowd. Again the Eagles overpow- ered their opponent, which was Waco, and became cham- pions for the second straight year. Trophies were presented by Larry Becwar to the top three teams, which were: Exeter, champions; Waco, second place, and Beaver Crossing, third place. 42 Year of Knowledge Class Officers: Secretary, Gayla Wellman; Treasurer, LaDonna Widle; President, Karen Krejci; Vice-President, David Drucker. One main goal was earning money for graduation activities. The first addition to the treasury was made early in the year by money made from cutting sorghum out of milo and picking up corn. October 29, during Teachers' Convention, the Seniors journeyed to Lincoln to have their pictures taken at Anderson's Studio. The treasury continued to grow as the seniors sold pens with the basketball schedule on them and year date pins to fans and underclassmen. During basketball season, the concession stand and cake raffles proved successful. The Seniors, as lowest didders, served the F.F.A. Banquet to many hungry boys and their parents. The Seniors continued to work diligently throughout the spring with a bake sale and a car wash on April 17th. APril 26th, they gave the matinee of their class play, Accidental Hero, and on April 27th they gave the night performance. The Seniors finished out their year by meeting their goals and looking back on their ac- complishments with pride. 48 Our first responsibility after en- tering the doors of 'Old Exeter High' for our last year together was to elect class officers. Addressing the '65 graduates was Mrs. Frank B. Morrison, wife of the Honorable Governor of Nebraska, whose talk was entitled And Then Some . Valedictorian, Ann O'Dea, Salutatorian, Carolyn Papik, Patsy Rouch, Judy Geiger, and Roland Jensen were the recipients of the scholarships given. Two new scholar- ships, the Otto Peterson Nurses' Scholarships, were given in addition to the Craven and Jones Scholarships. The class was presented by Mr. Knud Larsen, Princi- pal, and the diplomas were presented to the class by Mr. Thane Croston, president of the school board. At the end of the memorable ceremony, many well- wishers congratulated the Seniors. Senior Trip Thursday night, April 29, we, the Senior Class, our sponsors, and our bus driver departed on the eleven hour journey to Osage Beach, Missouri. The first morning was spent unpacking and getting familiar with the surroundings. Many seniors who had never skiied before tried their luck on the water that afternoon. We found that Roger Drucker and Sharon Hall were a little more proficient at the sport than the rest of us. Friday night we went to the Ozark Opry, a coun- try western show, that provided a very enjoyable eve- ning for us. Saturday morning was spent touring Dogpatch and the town of Osage Beach. After lunch we journeyed out to the Indian Burial Cave and observed the Indian skeletons on display there. Saturday evening we were entertained at a dance on the Governor's Excursion Boat. After the dance, we went back to our resort and enjoyed a weiner roast with the other towns staying there. Early Sunday morning we started on the long, hot journey home. We arrived in Exeter around 9:30 Sun- day night, weary, but happy. The Seniors are showing the effects of their trip on the way home from the Ozarks. In these perplexing, but exciting, years, a strange force within us pushes forth and opens up a new world--a world wnere club members rack their brains to come up with the most original party idea ever, where giving the football team the extra little boost is worth even getting drenched to the skin during a game. All we do is project our creativeness, our enthusiasm for living out into the open. You've had memorable times—initiation, ordering your class rings, the Junior senior Banquet, Sneak Day, basketball and football games—and you have shared these times with us, the Annual Staff, in our coverage of the typical school vear at Exeter High School, 1964-1965. 7 7 Perplexing but exciting years. 58
