JV Volleyball Tigers Have Successful Year The Junior Varsity Volleyball Tigers, consisting only of sophomores, repeated another outstanding year ending with a 19-1 season record. The only junior varsity loss was against William Chrisman before an enthused crowd at Lewis Gymnasium in the final week of the season. The junior varsity volleyball team traveled to two tournaments and took home titles from Winnetonka and Oak Park. The 1982 freshman team also enjoyed another successful year. The freshman team was coached by Mrs. Donna Williams and finished with a 13-4 sea- son record. They placed third at the Grandview Tournament and brought home the second place trophy from the North Kansas City Tournament. Junior Varsity Volleyball, by Geoff Head—23

Tigers Are District, Conference Champions A talent-laden team of five seniors returning from a conference championship season a year earlier and six juniors from a 20-1 junior varsity team combined to give the Tigers the best season ever in volleyball. Coach Larry Tesar and Assistant Coach Bill Huls were optimistic before the season began. The 22-2 record posted by the Tigers, however, was beyond their wildest dreams. In the process, the Tigers defeated 4A District Champions Oak Park and William Chrisman, and took titles at the Belton, Winnetonka, and district tournaments. The Tigers won their first 19 matches of the season, clinching their second straight Sub- urban Conference Blue Division title with a 10-0 record. The Tigers didn't lose their first match until October 28, when Lee's Summit derailed the Tiger Express. Best Sportsman, Most Improved Player, and Most Valuable Player Awards were voted on by the varsity players. Best Sportsmanship Award was giv- en to Jayla Buckallew. Donna Southwick received the Most Improved Player Award, and the Most Valuable Player Award went to the team as a whole as a tribute to their unity and teamwork. First team all conference honors were taken by Susie Huey, Julie Wendt, and Sherry Peebles. Cho- sen to all conference second team was Julie McMillin and honorable mention was given to Kel- ly (Thomas) Miller.
