National Honor Society, by Beth Babb 63 Select Choir Makes Annual Tour of Schools The vocal music department filled the air with music again this year under the direction of Marillyn Lansford and Cynthia Dotson. The com- munity enjoyed performances by the select choir, the swing choir, the mixed chorus, and several individual performers. In September several students were selected to the All District Choir. They included Dana Criswell, Jane Dotson, Tammy Hamline, Marty Albertson, Randy Martin, Craig Leimbach, and Rod- ney St. John. With October came the select choir's annual tour of schools. Popular attire of the '60's was worn to carry out the tour theme— Winds of the '60's. The tour came to a finale that evening with a concert at West High. A Christmas concert on December 5 brought all the choirs together in the East High School Auditorium. The choirs also sang at the lighting of the Mayor's Christmas Tree. Dr. Conan Castle, choir director at Central Mis- souri State University, visited the department in March for a day-long workshop. He directed the students in a concert and gave the students hints for district competition. Several ensembles and solos competed in district competition on March 25. The play, one of great creativity and challenge, was under the direction of Miss Luella Aubrey and Charlotte Weingartner. The play was an entertaining story of a teacher's first attempt at teaching in a hostile school in New York. The various students chosen to play students, faculty and friends made the play one of the most enjoyable to grace our stage. Kathy Pace, who por- trayed the new teacher. Fall Play, by Jodi Matson—67 Audiences Charmed By Spring Presentation The 1983 drama department put forth an out- standing effort with the production of the spring play, Little Women. Directed by Luella Aubrey and managed by Lynn Bowker, the play was based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott. House manager and ticket salesperson was Julie Seal. Auditions were held in late January, and practices were con- ducted every weekday after school until March 10 and 11 when the play was presented in the East High School Auditorium. The plot centered on a rather poor family struggling to realize their dreams and goals in life during the war years. Because the characters were portrayed with a true sense of realism, it became evident that the partici- pants endured many worthwhile hours in prepara- tion. This inspiring and exceptionally charming performance proved to be a pleasant experience for those who contributed to it, as well as those who offered their attendance. 1. This gripping musical dramatization finds a poor Jewish family struggling to maintain their tra- ditional way of life in a changing world. Recogniz- ing a brighter future in the eyes of their five daughters, the well-meaning parents learn to compromise beliefs and accept the unfamiliar idea of free will. The production was held May 5 and 6 in the East High Auditorium while directors Wayne Ward, Marillyn Lansford, and Luella Aubrey looked on with pride. When asked his feelings concerning his role as Tevya, Junior Day responded, I enjoyed the lead in 'Fiddler' because it gave me a chance to see what being in a play was like. It was an experience well worth going through. I met some people I'd never met before and made many new friends. I also had an opportunity to work with a great direc- tor and cast. I'd do it again tomorrow if I had the chance. 74 Spring Musical, by Charlotte Wilkey 1. Junior Day portrayed the father. Tevye. 2. Photojournalism students experimented with new equipment in the darkroom. New cabinets, sinks, timers, and safe lights made the work in the dark- room much easier and faster. The photojournalism class concentrated on learning how to produce quality photographs as well as providing photo- graphs for the Excelsiorite and the yearbook. Mr. Paul Allen taught art at East High, while Mr. Bob Bolin was the art instructor at West. Students learned to draw with pencils and charcoal. Painting with watercolors and acrylics was another class- room activity. Students also showed their creativity in three-dimensional art by working with clay. 76—Arl, photojournalism, by Janet Bratton 2. Debbie Thomson and Cindy Lockard prepare to draw a picture. 2. He joined a staff consisting of John Shepherd, Mary Shep- herd, Bob Curtis, Lou Wisniewski, and Susan Jones. At West student activities ranged from aerobics to basketball. East students included square dancing and floor hockey among their assignments. The industrial arts program included both wood- working and drafting classes. Shop students at East had a wide range of projects they could make as they developed skills with tools. The beginning classes made letter holders, book cases, and gun cases. The more advanced classes had the option of making a piece of furniture. Drafting students at West learned the intricacies of working with t- squares and triangles, completing three-dimensional drawings and blueprints for houses as projects. 80 Physical Education and Industrial Arts, by Candi Munstcrnian 1. This year's journalism class did more than that. They managed to produce a quality paper, even though tragedy struck in the untimely death of their teacher Jack Barrows. The staff, however, pulled together and put out the paper with the help of Advisor Sue Kurth. The style of the paper was changed to a maga- zine format to create a new, exciting effect. It ranged in size from 16 to 24 pages, the first time in Excelsiorite history a 24-page paper had been pub- lished. Editor-in-Chief Shelly Crowley tried to inspire humor along with producing the best paper the staff could possibly do. The social studies program provided a variety of choices during the school year. A Real Substantial Yell The 1983 senior trip began — on time for a change—at three o'clock on Thursday morning. May 19. The bus ride to Bagnell Dam was full of jokes, singing, and the important task of learning the senior yell. Sleeping was not allowed and any- one who dared to doze off was treated to a shower of water or whipped cream in addition to a good deal of berating. The first stop along the way was at the Arrow- head Lodge at Osage Beach for breakfast. Then the group spent some time at the Fort of the Osage, which was open only to the seniors. A tour of Bri- dal Cave followed, supposedly educational in na- ture. The Denny Hilton Show seemed questionable entertainment to the class of '83, but they enjoyed the liveliness of the entertainer. The day ended with a two hour boat ride—com- plete with live band—on the Larry Don. Then ev- eryone boarded the bus to head for home. It was a much different return trip, as popular vote determined that sleeping was allowable, and eventually quiet was the order of the journey. For the first time in several years, all company deadlines were met and we were able to produce a quality yearbook with- in our budget. The staff was fortunate enough to begin the year with Jack Barrows as advisor. His memory and devotion gave some of us the spirit needed to see our goal to a finish. I would like to extend from the staff and myself sincere thanks to Sue Kurth, advisor, who devoted many hours of time and work to the '83 Tiger. She fought to help us reach and conquer every goal and problem. She was there to pull us through good and bad times and always kept our morale at a high. Finally, the yearbook would not be complete without thanking the following people for their extra help: the photojournalism class, Vern Hoyt, Wollard Studios, The Daily Standard, Superinten- dent Art Kurth, ICP Representative Bob Gadd, West High Principal Richard Hyder, East High Principal Larry Kopp, secretaries Lynette McDan- iel, Barbara Woods, Judy Wormsley, and Judy Rounkles, and all of the ESHS faculty members. The '83 yearbook was compiled by a staff that included the following editors and managers: Beth Babb, assistant editor; Geoff Head, photography editor; Melissa Buckman, assistant photography editor; Charlotte Wilkey, copy editor; and Janet Bratton, business manager. To these people, as well as to the other members of the staff, 1 extend my thanks and appreciation for all of your work and cooperation. Sincerely, Lora Barnett 1983 Tiger Editor 182—Acknowledgements, by Lora Barnett Through the Years, Each Person Has Developed a Unique Individuality— That Special Something Known As Classic Style.
