1964 EXCELSIOR SPRINGS. MISSOURI IN MEMORIAM RISSELL O’DELL’S sinceritv and dedication made him one who was friendly and ready to listen to his fellow student. Because of these traits, he constructed a large and endearing place for himself in the hearts of all who knew him, both young and old alike. He was religious without being too pious, and courteous without being less than was expected of a football hero. He was president of the student council, providing it with leadership He was a sportsman who appreciated the nature God provided. He was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of the Barbee Memorial Presby- terian Church. As he shall never die, may our memories of him remain active as we are able to provide some portion of his influence to others. This, then, is preservation of thought and respect. For one who in our midst so briefly did dwell. With hope of encouragement to all that follow. This, then, a tribute to KUSSELL O’DELL .... --Reverend Barnett F AC U LTY FACULTY MRS. SCHOOL SPIRIT CHARLES ROBERTSON SUE TAYLOR Miss Peppy and Mr. School Spirit are selected each year by the Pep Clubs. The Boys' Pep Club nominated several girls for Miss Peppy and then voted for their favorite. The Girls' Pep Club did likewise. After the crowning at the Homecoming Pep Assembly they rode through town in the parade. HOMECOMING QUEEN MISS KATY McKOWN ATTENDANTS As an old but beautiful tradition, each year a high school girl is chosen to be- come Homecoming Queen and reign over all Homecoming activities. Two weeks before the game, all the high school classes chose a candidate to represent them in the queen contest. After weeks of anticipation and preparation, the date of the game arrived. During the parade the candidates and last year's Homecoming Queen, Miss Connie Green, rode through the streets of Excelsior in converti- bles. All eyes were upon them and guesses were made as to which one would become the queen. As always, just before the game, the football boys voted for the candidate of their choice. The half-time ceremonies started with the band marching onto the field and forming a heart. While they played, the royalty was escorted to the field in convertibles. During the ceremony the princesses were given rose cor- sages and Miss Kathy McKown was crowned the 1963 Homecoming Queen by Miss Connie Green. They were then escorted to honorary seats on the side line to watch the last of the game. Afterwards all attended the dance where-they stayed until the wee hours of the morning. This concluded the annual activities until next year. Miss Connie Green crowns Kathy McKown as the 1963 Homecoming Queen during half time ceremonies. Queen Kathy is escorted by Don Duncan. Attendants were Sandy Tackett, junior, es- corted by Bob Walsh; and Dorothy Bush, senior, es- corted by David Rimmer, The candidates for the 1963 Homecoming Queen are shown as they appeared in the parade Friday afternoon. Pictured are Sandy Tackett, Dorothy Bush, and Kathy McKown. Queen Connie, escorted by Raymond Cummins, is shown just before she crowned the 1963 Queen. Shown with her are Deb- bie and Vicki Bonuchi. They presented the flowers to the attend- ants. Miss Connie Green, the 1962 Homecoming Queen. HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES The Seniors received first place in the class compe- tition with their motto Victory or Bust. Third place was awarded to the Sophomore class with their motto Support the Team. Second place in the club division was taken by the French and Spanish Club with Let's Hatch 'Em. The Juniors were awarded second place with their float Cut the Minutemen In Half. The C. O . E. Club won first place in the club division with the slogan We're Lay- ing For Lexington. JtK.f, ru, , • 5fo«JOa ,KT0“''«ww.ooftM STUDENT COUNCIL ACTIVITIES The theme of the Student Council this year was to make every student in the school happy. It was a big order but it was fulfilled in a big way. To start out the year, the annual assembly for the swearing in of the officers and members was held. New and old members were filled with the awe of their responsibility and honor. The student body, who elected them, felt proud of their wise choice, and proud they should be, because of the work done. Our Homecoming activities were the job of the different committees of the council. The parade, the half-time coronation, and the big dance made Homecoming complete. Popcorn sales and the concessions added much to our growing bankroll. The Courtwarming dance and half-time ceremonies for basketball season completed the sport festivals for this year. For the enjoyment of the student body three assemblies sponsored by the Student Council were given to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. During Christmas, decorations were placed throughout the building and a large Christmas tree in the hall. These added much to the holiday spirit. Other activities were the establishing of a Big Brother and Big Sister Club, being host for the Tri-County Student Council meeting, and working with the American Field Society to organize a local chapter so as to bring a foreign exchange student to our school. The accomplishments of the '63-'64 Student Council will be a goal for many future councils to come. For several years they have sent delegates to the state convention to elect state officers. For the past two years our club has had a state officer. In the spring we send representatives to the spring contest and also sponsor an em- ployee-employer banquet. We work hard to keep a close relationship among students, school, and employers. We must be an active club because through the years C.O.E. has grown to be one of the most popular clubs at E.S.H.S.
