SCIENCE Man is a part of nature, not a thing set apart. He, therefore, has much to gain by studying nature, as in doing so he will better understand himself and insure his survival. These words were spoken by one of our educators who came to Excelsior in 1965. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 9, 19415 then moving to Long Beach where he attended David Starr jordan High School, from which he graduated in 1958. After surviving high sdhool exploi1s, he pulled himself together and attended Long Beach City College, and Los Angeles City College, where he earned his A.A. degree. Still trying to better his education he traveled on to the University of California at Los Angeles QUCLAJ, where he earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees. From here he began to better his environment by student teaching at Uni- versity High School in Los Angeles, beginning his ,teaching career at Excelsior in 1965, and being promoted to the head of the Science Department in 1970. As the greafAustra1ian runner, Kerry Pierce, chased all challengers down, so did his wife, Karoll as she snagged our dedicatee and exchanged wedding vows a few years ago. The result of the joyous chase was a boy named Lance. ' It is to Mr. R.
