' 2 J 1 i 1 SCIENCE Man is a part of nature, not a thing set apart. He, therefore, has much to gain by studying nature, as in doing so he will better understand himself and insure his survival. These words were spoken by one of our educators who came to Excelsior in 1965. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 9, 19415 then moving to Long Beach where he attended David Starr jordan High School, from which he graduated in 1958. After surviving high sdhool exploi1s, he pulled himself together and attended Long Beach City College, and Los Angeles City College, where he earned his A.A. degree. Still trying to better his education he traveled on to the University of California at Los Angeles QUCLAJ, where he earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees. From here he began to better his environment by student teaching at Uni- versity High School in Los Angeles, beginning his ,teaching career at Excelsior in 1965, and being promoted to the head of the Science Department in 1970. As the greafAustra1ian runner, Kerry Pierce, chased all challengers down, so did his wife, Karoll as she snagged our dedicatee and exchanged wedding vows a few years ago. The result of the joyous chase was a boy named Lance. ' It is to Mr. R. Kent Krogue, whose famous quote precedes 8 ends this biog- raphy, that this page in the 1970-71 El Aviador is dedicated to: 1 1 J 1 1 1 1 I 3 1 1 l 1 1 l Y 1 1 I I 4 I 4 i l I f 1 l if 1 1 l 1 5 1 l i 1 1 l 1 I 1 1 i l l f ! 1 1 1 I i I 1 1 1 1 I l 1 l 1 1 1 1 I Man is a part of natme, not a thing set apart. MATH We'll work till june. Boys do the even, girls do the odd. Do1cian.i was drunk when she made this problem up. If I were in your place, but I'm not. . . Get the best you can while you're in school and do the best you can while you're young. These are the quotes of a man who has dedicated his life to the betterment of mankind. He has given uninterested students who are taking math a new insight on the subject, to the point that they continue to take another course of math the following year. This man was born in New York City, New York. Being of above average intelligence he quickly went on to Rider College, Trenton, New Jersey, where he attained his B. S. degree in 1959. He furthered his education by attending Utah State University in the summer of '62 and San Diego State College in the sum- mer of '67. He taught at Tupper Lake High School, New York, from 1959-62 and later at Granger High School, New York, from 1962-65 before coming to Excelsior in the fall of '65. He is cur- rently a teacher in the Math Department. lt is this man who has played pro- football for the Buffalo Bills, the Pittsburg Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants 3 whose love for football is so great that he would rather play than stand on the sidelines and enjoy the punish- ment given as well as dishing it out, that we of the Annual Staff wish to honor. It is to you, Mr. George Robillard, the author of the closing quote, that this page in the 1970-71 El Aviador is so dedicated. 19 I fgflllhblli-n Slniar Dikl day urlcn cvayone 1-mnlum busesi dll! Linda Nawa Grade 12 Grade 10 'nn r K, . . s W A MAN NEEDS GOD Man is a troubled animal. He has a multitude of problems and responsibilities resting upon his shoulders, and he needs some help in bearing their weight. Since he is the most highly advanced being known on earth, man is left alone with his burdens, with only others of his own kind to alleviate them. Burdens were not made to be carried alone, but sometimes men just don't Want to listen to someone else's troubles, least of all help carry the load. Seeing no help from fellowmen, and being unable to communicate with other creatures, man can only turn to God for help. God may be different things to different people, but essentially He is Someone in which to believe. Without a belief of some kind, man is left only with the mixed-up world he has today, and nothing else--no hope for a brighter future in life or death, no rational reason for what is happening to him, and no answers to his many ques- tions. Linda Goddard Grade 12 THE FAIR The Pomona Fair was great fun. There were hundreds of people, all running around, trying to see everythingp There was much talking and laughing, crying children and other such noises. There were train whistles blowing and the sound of little carts going through the crowd, making a humming sound as they moved. The people in the streets could hear the screams and laugh- ter of the people on the scary rides. As the crowds moved along, once in awhile, they could hear the voices of a singing group or the music from a merry-go-round. People come to the fair each year because there's so much to see, hear and do. Jackie Barton Grade 10 Mario Chappino Grade ll F I Ray Roman MAN NEEDS GOD At one time or another, in every person's life, he feels as though he is all alone. It is at this time, when problems, worries, and unhappiness seem to have conquered him, that a person turns to God. Each person in the world needs someone he can come to when things look bad. Or, when things are looking up, there is a need to thank someone for the good fortune which has come. God is that someone who is always there to listen to our good and bad happenings, regard- less of the time or place we decide to talk to Him. It is hard to state exactly why man needs God. Many say the need of God is to more easily explain the earth's beginning. Some feel it is an inner need for Man to have someone to look up to. But, in the beginning God, Himself, placed a love, reverence, and need for His love and guidance in Man's heart. Yet, Man has always been given the privilege of either accepting or rejecting Him. It's home to the word can't , and the breeding place for failure. One day, Anne set out to conquer that cave of darkness: the day She looked around and said, This is not enough, I want something more. Anne lived in Lawenceville, a small New England town. She is an average Lawenceville girl. Anne has long brown hair, and big brown eyesg She is 5 foot 5 and of average build. She's not fantastically beautiful, but not ugly either. She's just graduated from high school and will probably go to college for four years, and then will probably marry a nice Lawenceville boyg they will probably then move into her mother's house, Where they Will probably someday add a wing, or so her mother, and father, and all of Lawenceville think. This is what Anne feels is not enough, being a stereotype of every other female who has ever lived in Lawenceville. Deciding She wants out, She finds herself in adilemma. All her life, She has done everything under her parent's direction, with the help, financially, especially. Therefore, She can't just leave, because She has no money, and they won't give her any. Anne is trapped, not only by her parents and tangible things, but She's also trapped, by herself, and locked inside her cave of darkness 5 now, begins her struggle, too, from herself. Some people find it in music, others in perilous ventures, But the spir- its of these, our Excelsior Pilots, are entangled in football. For all that football gives: its glory, its bitterness, its ego build- ing, and its touches of conceit, these guys accept it with all its right- eousness and faults. The standards are high, the goal out of normal reach, the road a rough one but with the coaches, pep squads and the school be- hind our team, how else could we end up but with a champion- ship squad! He loves you so much that He died on the cross for you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life. fjohn 3: 165 jesus died a horrible death on the cross it was for a purposeg the most important purpose in the world: YOU. He died so you could live a life of purpose and reality. jesus said, I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Qjohn 10:l0j Man is separated from God because of sin. The Bible says, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. QRomans 3:23j Sin is rebellion against God. For the wages of sin is death. fRomans 6:23j We exist to have fellowship with God, but because of our own stubborn self-will, we made a choice to go our own independent way. Fellowship with God was broken. Man is forever trying to find a new life on his own through religion, philosophy, drugs or meditation. There is only one answer, jesus Christ, God's only remedy for this problem of separation. jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by Me. fjohn 4:16j Only through jesus can you know of God's love. No matter what we do or how good we are, there is only one way: The Bible's plan of salvation. The Bible says, For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of your- selves. It is a gift of Cod not of works lest any man should boast. QEphesians 2:8-95 No man can rise to heaven on his own merits without the grace of God, if you believe otherwise, you are very seriously mistaken. Why not accept the most fantastic gift of all, the gift from God, jesus Christ. He's the gift that keeps on giving. We must receive jesus Christ as Savior and Lord by personal invitation. The Bible says, But as many as received Him to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe in His name. Qjohn 11123 If jesus was to come right now where would you spend eternity? jesus' second coming is very near. Are you ready to meet God? If you're not, here is how to prepare yourself. jesus said, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kindgom of God, Uohn 3:35 When jesus said to be born again , he means to be born of the spirit. Jesus said, Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come unto Him, and will sup with him, and he with me. fRevelation 3:2Oj The door jesus is knocking at, is the door to your heart. jesus is constantly lmocking at this door, hoping that someday you will open the door and will let Him in. Christ wants to make you happy, fill you with blessings, and give you everlasting life. Letting jesus into your heart is being born again, born of the Spirit. The day will come when you will be standing in front of God to be judged. The Bible says, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. QII Corinthiansy What will you do? What will you say? You have read how to be born again. If you reject it, prepare to meet the consequences. The Bible says, How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was con- firmed unto us by them that heard him. lHebrews 2:3j jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, has a wonderful new life for you, Accept Him and live, reject Him and die. If you have problems, take them to jesus, for with God all things are possible. DEAR FATHER: I KNOW THAT I AM SEPARATED FROM YOU AND NEED YOUR FORGIVENESS. I BELIEVE THAT CHRIST DIED ON THE CROSS AND SHED HIS BLOOD FOR ME, IAM WILLINC TO TURN FROM MY WAY AND INVITEJESUS INTO MY HEART AS MY PERSONAL SAVIOUR, AND TO FOLLOW AND OBEY HIM AS THE LORD OF MY LLFE. . .
