1902 marked the beginning of Excelsior. It was then that she became an accredited school, an establishment with a definite purpose. This purpose developed into a tradition-a tradition which has endured for the last sixty-seven years. Senior sweaters, homecomings, Pilot Trueheart and Snoopy, along with many other forms of school tradition-some old and treasured-others new and unique-have contributed to the campus life here at Excelsior. Perhaps the oldest and most popular tradition has been the dedication of the EL AVIADOR to a deserving faculty member. This year the representative students have kept this tradition by choosing a faculty member that has helped to keep Excelsior as original as her Alma Mater. As a teacher of United States History this man has acquainted many students with the problems of yesterday and has conducted meaningful classroom discussions on building an ideal nation for tomorrow. Besides teaching history, he has helped many talented Pilots develop their musical abilities. His home at Excelsior is found on the second floor of the auditorium, and it is here that he has conducted many early morning rehearsals for students who have shown an interest in and an aptitude for music. This teacher devotes much of his spare time preparing our band for half-time shows at football games, competition at music festivals, performances on assemblies, and the Spring Swing. Throughout the years he has done much for Excelsior, but perhaps his greatest contribution to our school has been the composition of our lovely f'Alma Mater. Born in Alhambra, California, he obtained his M.A.T., M.E.D., and B.A. degrees at Whittier College. He started his teaching career at Excelsior and has remained a dedicated member of our teaching staff, upholding the many Excelsior traditions. We proudly dedicate the 1968-1969 EL AVIADOR to Mr. Robert Scott. x 1 xr K if . J ,

FORE WORD Enduring traditions of yesterday are daily present on Excelsior's campus. The classical structure of old Spanish buildings defying changeg the statues of Lincoln and Washington, standing silently in our auditor- ium have endured through the years. These along with many time-worn traditions help to establish the uniqueness that is Excelsior. Excelsior's uniqueness began as far back as 1902 when a class of twenty-three students and three faculty members met at the old Norwalk Grammar School on Walnut Street. The class chose green and white as their school colors and were called Excelsiorites. As the years passed to the twenties, Excelsiorites saw plans under way for the construction of a new Excelsior Union High School on Pioneer and Alondra and in 1924 the first classes were held in this new building. During this era, slick haired boys and girls, wearing the latest bobs',, introduced such traditions as Senior Hor- oscope and organized the Big E Club, a club which is today known as the Varsity Club. During the next decade an earthquake brought destruction to Excelsior and in 1935 it was necessary to rebuild our administration building. The thirties also brought many new traditions. A Boys' League was established and it became customary for juniors to receive sweaters and seniors to receive rings. TABLE OF CONTENTS Asithe fo adopted freshmen with and Big Sisters.
