I Dedication A student's growth many times depends upon the en- couragement others give. This encouragement must come, not only from an advisor, but a friend: some- one who will give warmth and understanding when it is needed. It must come from someone who has cap- ably dealtwith the onward movement: someone whose lvfe can be set as an example for others to follow. We have dedicated this year 's annual to such a person. This teacher has always found time to give warmth and understanding to students. She is greatly loved and respected for her generosity. Literally hundreds of students have been helped by this busy woman who denies no student extra help when it is needed. In her many-sided lute she is a most capable teacher, a wufe and mother and a devoted public servant. She is an elected member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor- ary Teacher Sorority, an organization comprised of the top women teachers and administrators in the State and was named Career Woman ofthe year in 1958 by the Business and Professional Women 's Club of La Mirada. Allwho know her, value the guide lines which she has set before them. As a writer by interest, a humanitarian by nature, a public official by overwhelmingpublic choice, the first woman mayor of La Mirada, and as a teacher of Eng- lish, Latin, and Journalism at Excelsior, her influence has spread far and wide. We the staff of the 1964-65 El Aviador respecbfully dedicate our reflections to Mrs. Estelle Troup. f -'s's -if t 1 , if. Q. .K .. Hz. ' rig ' V ' 5.3 J 'il ,t :' .935 2.3: 5 V 1 ii: ' - .'..,I? Foreword The world is a looking-glass, and gives to every man a reflection of his own face. Frown at it and it will in tum look sourly upon youg laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly companion. Thackeray-Vanity Fair In years to come, years that are removed from the present, Excelsior, too, may act like Thackeray's looking-glass. Recalling friends, teachers, and familiar campus scenes, we may look back on the years we spent at Excelsior. Our reflections will be likely to wander to simple scenes. The many windows might remind us of the times we looked to the outside world with both wonder and bewilderment. The doors through which we passed so many times might symbolize the doors which opened tous as we left high school and entered life completely on our own. As we recall the crowded halls through which we so often passed, we might reflect on that long journey which we began at Excelsior. The accomplishments and failures that we will remember will depend on what we have put before this looking-glass. The work, effort, and enthusiasm that was or wawgfnot put' forth will reflect back to the individual. At this time, therefore, it would be well to remember that there is no limit to the pathway of life, our goals, ourflachievements can be as wide or as narrow as we make them, 1 In all truth the way we look at life determines what we get out of it, and in the years to come we hope that happy memories will be reflected as we look back. With the theme Reflections the '64-'65 El Aviador hopes to bring back a few of this year's fond memories. .an 5 ,V ,.'- -, -...fsw, -w - .fgli A fr -
