From the many attempts at perfection, a few emerge as award winners, possessors of the coveted Oscar. This is the highest award moviemakers can give to their colleagues. ln our effort The Excelsior Story we feel that one performance is worthy of an award symbolic of perfection of effort. His part in the play has been multifold: actor, director, assistant to others. He could be seen for the past twenty- seven years shaping the minds of all the students at Ex- celsior by opening the bright world for their eyes, bringing to the classroom the wonders of learning by the vehicle of motion pictures. He used a proiector as his magic wand and film as a magic carpet. Now after twenty-seven years as guide and companion on these tours he is retiring to days of ease and relaxation: beginning his own story, though Excelsior's story will be forever a part of his, and his forever a part of the Excelsior story. For these reason we have dedicated the 1959 El Aviador to Mr. Hugh Yost. ASHTON Director of Personal and Special Services MR. MURRELL M. MILLER Director of Business Affairs MR. RICHARDSON HASTINGS Director of Instruction ln the production of the Pilot story the superintendent became our executive producer. This role was one of great importance in the year now past. This executive provided the administrative leadership for the entire school program. Included in his duties were the direction of public relations and the development of plans for school plants and facilities. He, with others, made possible The Excelsior Story. pri T BOARD OF TRUSTEES pam. MR. VENN FURGESON Clerk MRS. PHYLLIS AEGERTER For the financial angels of our production, the plot of the story had no beginning or end. The takes and retakes continued throughout the one hundred and seventy-seven days of the school year. Due to the efforts of these and others like them, the Pilot's story rolled on through both the good and the bad. Their advice and authority guided those who directed and performed. Each played an all-important role in the productions of The Excelsior Story. MR. RAYMOND F. HANSEN MR. HAROLD L. MacTAGGART President DR. CARL W. TAGUE THE PRlNCIPAL'S MESSAGE Our annual is a reminder of the friends and events that filled our days at school. In coming years its pages will revive for us the people and ex- periences that make school days truly golden days. The important and lasting ejects of our schooling, however are not easily recorded on the pages of a yearbook. W'hat we ahsorh from classes, lessons, reading - how much we strengthen in doing our work well, in facing dijficult tasks with determination - how much we grow in dealing with others through our many daily contacts - the sum of these things measures the worth of our schooling. I trust that what you carry from Excelsior in your head and heart will he as valuable as the memories you carry in this hook. a fig. 445 MISS LUCILE TOMBS Assistant Principal The men behind the scenes, as well as the actors on stage, have many important duties to perform to help make a performance run smoothly. Mr. Richard James, Dean of Boys, coun- seled and supervised the members of the Boys' League seeing that all of its activities came off as smoothly as any award-winning production. 'ifv MRS. HELEN BRYAN Dean of Girls With one hundred and one scenes to be shot on our production schedule our assistant principal, Miss Lucile Tombs, was kept con- stantly busy. She helped in the planning and directing of assemblies, activities, and many other events in which the members of Pilot- ville participated and also viewed. MR. RICHARD JAMES Dean of Boys During the year problems were bound to arise among the members of a cast as large as ours. Members of the Girls' league found Mrs. Helen Bryan, Dean of Girls, always will- ing to advise and to help with the many and varied problems which found their way into her office. - MR. TED CHENNEY Senior Counselor Ml. EARL LEAKE Sophomore Counselor ......,,, , -- -W Jr-- MR. KEITH WEST Director of Attendance and Welfare Directing the attend- ance office is Mr. Keith West. It is his iob to make sure the members of our cast are not absent from their work without a legal excuse. For how can any production be well done without the full cooperation and support of the cast? In order for a show to go on, technical advice is needed. Filling this all-important task this year were the counselors. The students of all classes came to the counselors during this year for any technical advice which they may have needed. The seniors came to find out about scholarships and colleges, and other students to get help in pro- gram changes and other general problems. MRS. DOROTHY POTEAT Junior Counselor MR.
