Forward According to lVlr. Webster's Dictionary a year is the time in which any planet completes a revolution around the sun. During the earth's journey around the sun in this year of 1957-1958, the world felt the ever-present fears and loves. This old world began a new adventure as the Russian govern- ment launched the first man-made satellite into the earth's orbit-the first steps into outer space. The Russian Sputnik was praised by the world as a great scientific accomplishment, and the United States was once again reminded of the race it must maintain to insure world peace. The never-say-die scien- tists in the United States worked to launch a man-made moon late in 1957 and the world knew we weren't sitting on our old tarnished laurels. The peace of the world was insecure with troubles in the Middle and Far East ever present. ln California the gubernatorial elections were held pitting William Knowland against Pat Brown. While a bitter battle raged on for the governorship, ex-governor Goodwin Knight was running for the United States Senate. Here in Norwalk, 'the once small community now began to take pride in itself and by an overwhelming majority became the City of Norwalk. That old trouble sickness showed itself in a new form called Asiatic Flu, which caused widespread absences from employ- ment and school. Excelsior moved along with the rest of the world taking all of these problems in stride. At the beginning of the year the student body showed a spirit it had never shown before, when over 1700 student body cards were sold. Pilotville had its own problems to deal with, operating on a limited budget meant a lack of funds, but this didn't hurt the spirit of the Student Body, which reached an all-time high. Classes were crowded with over 2700 enrolled, but our minds grew, too. Seniors' hearts were palpitating with the unknown they were about to face in an adult world, but they were also full of joy for they had the memories of a wonderful school. Minds grew, spirits were higher than ever, hearts were full of joy and we at Excel- sior began to develop our futures. The Excelsior Student Body became a model community in itself, showing it could deal with world, national, 'and local problems as well. Graduates of Excelsior have shown their leadership abilities in various universities and colleges throughout the nation. It is for these reasons that the Annual Staff feels that it would be most fitting that the theme of the 1958 El Aviador be THE STUDENT BODY. Phil Spears Editor-in-Chief STAFF ANNUAL

H -Oliver Goldsmith Thousands of men achieve fame in their life, but their fame diminishes afterthey have passed on. There are some who gave to the world something more valuable than fame . . . great minds. Excelsior is very proud that one of these men has devoted his career to teaching at Pilotville. This man has given over three decades of his time and knowledge lodged in his remarkable mind, to 'thousands who have passed through his classrooms. He has spurred on the hopeful boy or girl seeking to find an answer to his problems with his friendly advice and understanding. Those he has benefited shall never forget him. Because it is appropriate in this year of scientific advances, and for his tireless years of shaping scientific minds, the Annual Staff feels it a great honor to dedicate the 1958 EL AVIADOR to lVlr.
