- AND FOUND THE MISGUIDED. - During his past nine years at Excelsior, Mr. Keith West, American History Teacher, has acquired his Master's Degree in American History at the Univer- sity of Southern California. For the past Four years he has acted as Assistant Director of Attendance to Mr. James. This year he has helped launch a new merit system in an effort to correct some of the school's atten- dance problems. Along with his duties in the office and teaching, he also went to the homes of the stu- dents who have been absent over a long period of time. Mr. Keith West Attendance Mr. Richard James As the Excelsior Student Body has grown larger Mr. Richard James' duties grew with it. One of his many responsibilities as Director of Attendance was to report to the state onthe atten- dance of all students according to the average daily attendance. The state in turn would issue money to the school funds. He also was in charge of the dailyattendance re- cord of each student. He issued the demerits or de- tention for those who cut school or classes. As Director of Attendance, Mr. Richard James l'lGS helped Excelsior to be the biggest and best yet.

r Robert Ashton The heart of activities was the office of Miss Lucille Tombs, Girls' Vice Pri n ci pa l of Excelsior High School. Her duties of this oFFice consisted of helping girls with maior problems in and out of school. Getting out the school bulletin , which regulated Excelsior High School's day, and the main activi- ties on the school campus. Miss Lucille Tombs, earned the admira- tion oF the girls as the supervisor oF the Girls' League. She madethe lite at Excelsior more pleasant. Girls' Vice Principal WHO GUIDED STUDENTS A -191.4 A . 1 is Boys' Vice Principal Mr. Robert Ashton became Boys' Vice Principal in T954-. This year and the years since he has tried to understand the boys and their many problems. He has helped many of the boys to Find iobs, and to succeed after their graduation. Promoting boys' educational re- creational activities are some of the many duties he was interested in. With his kind advice Mr. Joyce has put many a Junior on the right road to success. Being very active around campus he has worked with Leadership as well as Student Coun- cil. He had also the enormous job of head of the Command Pilots. His main duties as counselor were to help with registration and changing of classes. Mr. Mau ri ce Joyce SOME LISTENED Mr. Earl Leake, Senior Counse- lor, ancl English Department Head, has guided Seniors through many di- verse difficulties. His duties were to advise and talk over the Seniors' problems re- lating to scholarship programs, vo- cational choices, and many personal matters. His devotion to young people and his understanding of their needs, has made him a friend to all who knew him. Mr. Earl Leake ,ll Former Spanish teacher and Span- ish club advisor oF Bellflower and Excelsior High School, has accept- ed the responsibilities of Freshman counselor at Excelsior. As counse- lor she handled the enrollment of new students, preparing program cha nges, she attends all district county meetings concerning counsel- ing matters. His duties as counselor to the largest class on campus were to ar- range programs suitable for their Future careers. Prior to his appoint- ment as Sophomore Counselor, he taught American History and Social Studies. During his ten years at Excelsior he has worked hard for the better- ment ofthe students at Pilotville.
