Foreword Nineteen hundred and fifty-three-an age within a year, composing and formulating an American influenced world. An age of national elections and changing of national policies which vitally concerns the inhabitants of this sphere. For most international problems converged at one destination-the Pentagon -hub of the western world. Nineteen hundred and fifty-three years of prog- ress and floundering have brought the people of the western world from the Roman Empire to this dem- ocratic way of life. Yet, the origin of our way is not to be found in the mere one hundred and seventy-six years of this nation's existence. Rather, we trace our heritage of democracy toward the birth of Christ-down the Appian Way. Our road leads us to the eternal city -Rome, as did all roads under the reign of Caesar. Surely, in the annals of world influence, none shone so brilliantly as the banner of the Caesar. Few military forces could compare with the dominant soldiers endowed with the Roman breastplate. No sword could help but falter under the dynamic oratory of the Roman Senate. Our road is growing dim in the sands of time and the star of the Roman Empire glitters through measureless space, reminding us of an ancient democracy, the blueprint for our world, that has created this nation with world influence comparable to Rome. Perhaps it is for this reason that our thinking was turned to the world of the Caesars as we endeavored to find a suitable theme for this year- book. Here on the campus of Excelsior, students are educated and trained as beneficiaries of democ- racy. Though the consumption of four years is rather rapid, we dare not deny the pleasure and knowledge gained. We have fought our battles to- gether as a school. Occasionally, Excelsior's banner has been rent. Still, she continues to endure by the breastplate of truth, scholarship, and service. Thus, it is only fitting that this year's theme be recognized as Caesar's Excelsior Wars.
