An age of national elections and changing of national policies which vitally concerns the inhabitants of this sphere. For most international problems converged at one destination-the Pentagon -hub of the western world. Nineteen hundred and fifty-three years of prog- ress and floundering have brought the people of the western world from the Roman Empire to this dem- ocratic way of life. Yet, the origin of our way is not to be found in the mere one hundred and seventy-six years of this nation's existence. Rather, we trace our heritage of democracy toward the birth of Christ-down the Appian Way. Our road leads us to the eternal city -Rome, as did all roads under the reign of Caesar. Surely, in the annals of world influence, none shone so brilliantly as the banner of the Caesar. Few military forces could compare with the dominant soldiers endowed with the Roman breastplate. No sword could help but falter under the dynamic oratory of the Roman Senate. Our road is growing dim in the sands of time and the star of the Roman Empire glitters through measureless space, reminding us of an ancient democracy, the blueprint for our world, that has created this nation with world influence comparable to Rome. Perhaps it is for this reason that our thinking was turned to the world of the Caesars as we endeavored to find a suitable theme for this year- book. Here on the campus of Excelsior, students are educated and trained as beneficiaries of democ- racy. Though the consumption of four years is rather rapid, we dare not deny the pleasure and knowledge gained. We have fought our battles to- gether as a school. Occasionally, Excelsior's banner has been rent. Still, she continues to endure by the breastplate of truth, scholarship, and service. Thus, it is only fitting that this year's theme be recognized as Caesar's Excelsior Wars. 411.088 . + ,H , - 61 , , ,Q-., 4 5 5 - 9,. It is the Annual staff's pleasure each year to dedicate the annual to one deserving person. Teaching is really a fine way to help students in all phases of their lives and sometimes a lot of that help is obtained from sources other than the class room. Each faculty member does his or her part in a different way and through various means. The many activities in which Excelsior students take part require able and wise leaders to guide the group to the right choices in life. In choosing the dedicatee for this year's Annual, the staff believes it has chosen a man who has many fine characteristics and whose assistance fits into all the definitions of service, although not always getting the praise he well deserved. He helped students in whatever ways they needed help. He knew his sub- iects and taught them well, also serving as a very able advisor to one of the most important and worthwhile organizations in the school. It was through his efforts that that organization became an outstanding one tot- which it was an honor to belong. For these reasons the Annual staff wishes to dedicate the 1953 El Aviador to Mr. Thomas J. Everly, English teacher Latin teacher, and C.S.F. Advisor. . ' b S1131 RQ, 7, I 'N N PBM fi! This group worked hard to keep Excelsior's Chariots in good condition and to get the discipulii to and from school on time. This year's first semester cabinet was led by Bryon Homby, President. Working in unison with Bryon were the other officers. This outstanding group met the problems facing the school with enthusiasm. Where o solution was impossible they worked out some alternative. The one main effort this year was to creote more school spirit. After much work the Student n- ? The financial status of the school also improved throughout the year. Continuing the work started by the first semester cabinet, the second group also proved their ability. As leaders, both groups showed they could maintain unity in the Excelsior Student Body.
