For maintaining a daily service- that ue could not do uitlionlz for making our extra curricular activities possibleg for being tolerant of our sometimes impolite and noisy waysg for waiting for that extra stndentg for performing tbe thousand-and-one different jobs requested by us: for turning on the lleaters on rainy daysg for guiding the liixcelsior students to a safe stopg for enabling the wheels and Nspokesn to reach their destinations: and most of all for being a real friend of the students, the 1952 yearbook staff proudly dedicates this Annual to the transportation staff. Without any fuss or ado they make the decisions that are reflected in the success of our school. Many of the students never see or never have the chance to meet these fine men who repre- sent the five districts that make up Excelsior High School. Leaving the board of trustees after eighteen years of outstanding service to Excelsior, Mr. M. P. Killingsworth. representative from Artesia and Bloomfield. and former head of the Board of Trustees. was replaced by Mr. L. D. Donnell. The team had fine morale throughout the season and were courageous and well-conditioned. Injuries to key personnel in mid-season and a three game slump hindered them. But they came back strongly against league champs, Poly, and could have reversed the score. General lack of speed and poor pass protection hurt offensive play that was generally dangerous. A tough, hard charging defensive line was out- standing and well respected by the opposition. All in all a successful season was had with a 5 win 4 loss record. 3 The statistics on the outstanding players are as follows: Backfield, Jack Crabtree. for his fine passing and 5 ball handling: Bobby Tfijihara, for his running and defensive play, Sam Bourgeous. for his blocking and de- fensive playg Jack Tippings, for his very good running, Jerry Smith, for his outstanding defensive play lineg Jim Moore, for his pass receiving and good blocking: Guard, Hilario Hernandez, an outst'anding blocker: George Dutra, for his hard work and general abilityg End, Ed Driesen, for his tough defensive play. The best game was against St. Anthony. Excelsior won by a 4.2-25 margin. The outstanding traits were definitely a hard working team with a high morale. The major part of tht- games lost were lost to teams which eventually qualified for tI.l.l . play- offs at the close of the season. Both Long Beach Poly games 1 Poly ended up in second place in the leaguel were close. the first 33-35. the second 35-36. The squad was small in stature hut mighty in heart and fight. One of the hest hall-handling cluhs in some years. this cluh always gave the opponents all they could handle and. in all the games they won. they ran their opponents off the floor. The scoring spearhead of the attack was Corty Yan Dyk. who played a hang-up ty pe of game in the center slot. Corty. always a great fighter. rehounder. and team player. ended with the most valuahle-player award for the season. .Nhly assisting in scoring were the two aggressive forwards, Andy Boersma. a hard driving, fine set-shooting forward. and Ronnie Granger. a fast. alert. clever front lineman. ln guard positions were two men who completed the joh splendidly. As the Thgeed season went along they improved with every game. The most exciting game was in the Wilson tilt when Lawrence Roy made the score 31-30 by a tip-in. The best game was the game with Poly. Poly had only been defeated once and the odds were greatly against EXcelsior's Bee squad but the Pilots pulled through six points ahead for a 40-34 defeat over the C Cmpper Bunnies. i Don Pratt pulled through with the highest scorer and most valuable player awards with 233 points, which is exceptionally good. The most improved player was Jack Crabtree. The most valuable guard award went to ,lim Moore, while Don Bowe won the most valu- able forward title. A.Boeve 1. They were also short of speed and height in the front line. They only dropped three practice games and three league games out of 21- played for 18 wins against 0 losses. They wound up third in league play with a 6 Sid llendeick .l.Painton lillropper and 3 record. The outstanding game was the Monrovia game, in which the boys came in from behind, got ahead and coolly added points while Monrovia frantically drew fouls for rough play. The boys excelled in hustle and fight and never gave up. These traits won several close games that otherwise would have gone to the opposition. The team had good morale and displayed a willingness for work and a strong desire to win. 1. B.King, N.Sagara, Gjlarquez, J.Raitt. C.Cropper, Djlartinez, J.Painton. T.Ross, C.l er guson. 2. The modern danc- ers learned various exercises to help develop poise and improve their posture. Miss Beu, Hannah Hulsey, and her assistant, Anita Cook, worked together to show the girls different steps and movements that make interesting dances. They did variations of leaps, hops, jumps. skips, runs and they even did some little tricky steps for variety. The entire group made up original dances to show their creativeness in this field. SONG LEADING AND MAJORETTES Along with the popular song leading group a new group was introduced to the girls interested in some- day becoming majorettes. Eleanor Boone met twice a week with them to give them hints on twirling, high-stepping, marching, and strutting. Although new, this interested several girls hoping some day to do stunts with their batons. Louise Hutchcraft led those interested in develop- ing talent towards song leading through basic steps. She then graduated them into work with marches and finally worked out steps for the school songs. 1. E.Boone. 2. A.Balzer, S.Rouse. 3. M.DeLeen- heer, M.Williamson, R.W'iersma. Q. S- l.
