Excelsior became very active in the California Association of Student Councils due to o great deal of after class work by the student body officers. Jim was capably assisted by vice-president Pat Collum, who also supervised the student court. Dot Decker efficiently carried out the dutes of secretary and offered many suggestions which the cabinet was able to put into effect. Other members ofthe group were Warren Davis, sgt.-at-arms, Lena Boersma, song leader, Willie Manriquez, yell leader, Jack Pace, treasurer, Larry Metzler, senior class president, Sterling Davis, junior class president, and Ray Hugli, sophomore class president. First semester cabinet members also instigated the program of noon movies which was enjoyed by the entire student body. A well co-ordi- nated group, they worked well under the leadership of Mr. Corley V. Porter, their director. Aided and abetted by a capable group of second semester officers, Earl Ludington carried forward the high standards of Excelsior's student government. The cabinet, com- posed of Earl, Marilyn Bowman, vice president, Donna Benson, secretary, Paul Dearth, sgt.-at-arms, Jack Pace, treasurer, Virginia Houghton, song leader, Don Rickey, yell leader, Larry Metzler, senior president, Sterling Davis, junior president, Ray l-lugli, soph- omore president, Buckley l-lardin, freshman president and Jim Rex, past president, actively participated in the California Association of Student Councils by attendance at several dis- trict conventions and the state convention at Santa Barbara. The group also arranged to have a meeting of the sixteenth district C.A,S.C. here, Work was also done on constitution revisions and changes in the service point system. They also continued work on o new handbook which was started by the first semester cabinet. 9 e f ll li is. ui FIRST SEMESTER-Dol Decker, Secretary, Warren Davis, Sgt.-al'-Arms: Lena Boersma, Song Leader, Willie Manriquez, Yell Leader: Jack Pace, Treasurer. Whether adver- tising a dance or sup- porting a cleanup campaign this group of duly elected repre- sentatives worked wholeheartedly at it. Following the sec- ond semester council class elections, this new group continued the hard work the first semester coun- cil was doing. This time they were navi- gated by the head pilot, Earl Ludington, Suggestions were made for improving the student activities next year, and new problems coped with, Whatever the prob- lem or task the Stu- dent Bodyot Excelsior was ably represented by these councilmen both semesters. .. .i GIICQ5 The judges and rally committees were both kept busy this year, the former reviewing cases, ithe latter creating pep for athletic events. Sterling Davis, class president, his cab- inet and the steering committee put theri new ideas into action. Some ofthe many activities sponsored by the junior class were the play Henrietta the Eighth and all school dances. As the grand finale, the junior class sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom, The day the sweaters arrived, the campus was flood- ed with purple and white and class riv- alry was kindled anew. The class advisors, Mr. Chenney and Mrs. Jacobs, were always on hand to give welcome advice on the problems arising before this fine junior class. Tomiack, C. Brown, D. White, O. Alves, G. Fernandes, D. Regalado. The Class of i952 started the year off with a bang with the planning ot a class party which was cancelled because of heavy fog. This proved to be quite a disappointment to the class, so Ray Hugli and Janet Hummel, president and vice-president, respectively, along with the other officers began planning numerous other activities. Among them was the sophomore all- school dance, Apple Blossom Time, which proved to be a huge success. All sophomores who had paid their dues were admitted free of charge. With this class winding up their last year as underclassmen, there came the all-important matter of selecting the color tor their junior sweaters, and the electing of junior officers. R. The first few weeks of adjusting themselves to the campus and being called scrub died down and they had become a vital part of our school. The election of class officers was the first business under- taken by this class. Emerging victorious as president and leader of the class was Buckley Hardin. With the full backing of an efficient cabinet and an energetic class, he led the class through its first year, The assembly and the party were the biggest events of the year for them, Mr. Ostergaard and Mrs. lsenberg, the class advisers, were the two to be commended for their helpful guidance. The end of school meant the planning for next year and thus the Class of 1953 grew one year closer to graduation day. Marilyn Bowman and Kay Fujita, editor and managing editor, respective- ly, of the EI Aviador, were not content to wait until school started to begin work on the annual, but instead called meetings a month before school re- sumed The theme, dedication, colors and other basic work were decided on at these meetings. After these prelimi- naries were over, the staff immediately set to work on the hundred and one things that had to be done. ln spite of all the work that goes into preparing a yearbook, everyone had a lot of fun. Under the di- rection of Mr. Millard Lunde, and John Reeves as student conductor, the or- chestra played at several out-of-town clubs. They did an excellent job and should be commended. A select group of girls made up the Girls' Lyric Club this year. The mem- bers were mostly seniors and juniors with a few sophomores. Assemblies, the Christmas Play, and the Spring Swing were but a few of the activities that the girls participated in this year. Mrs. Yates was the very able director of the group. 97 OCTET-C. Rating high as one of the outstanding senior functions, this event will be remembered by many a senior for years to come, The play was a comedy- farce about the Crochets who live near the Mis- sissippi River in Louisiana. The plot revolved around a great big doorstep washed up from the muddy Mississippi to the front yard of their shack and the attempt of the Crochets to obtain a house to match this doorstep. After weeks of rehearsing, the cast and the production staff in- corporated their skills into one big performance. The applause from the audience expressed its estie mation of the play and the cast was justly rewarded. Top billing was given to Arlene Clotfelter and James Moyer, who played Mrs. Crochet and the Com- modore, respectively. lf a play is to be a success, the work of the production staff must equal that of the cast. Billie Gibson held the position of Student Director. With Mr. Valentine giving advice when- ever it was needed and Mr. Donald supervising the technical aspects of producing a ploy, the final cur- tain fell an the Senior Play, The Great Big Doorstep. Second act curtain ascended and Henrietta the Eighth progressed. The plot unfolded amusingly around a young novelist who employs herself as a secretary in a clubwoman's home to gather material for her next book. What happened when she tried to reform the teenage daughters made for delightful, zany comedy. Henrietta the Eighth had all the charm, exuber- fe ance, and energy of a teenager. John Furton rolled to many impressive wins in the high hurdles and set a new school mark at 95. Mel Johnson tied the school 220 mark on one of his aner days. George l-lammamoto was a fine springer who was high point man in many meets. Those who qualified for the trail to CIF championships were Jess Koopman, Jim De Vries, and Roy Ferguson, who quali- fied in the high jump. Jim De Vries jumped to a new Pacific League final record, leaping 5 feet and ll inches. ing .spoeezl :Demand Pilot C tracksters fell to a cellar position in League standing to spite the efforts of Ken Hartman and Don Howell, who placed the ma- jority of the first places for the striving light-weights. Hartman dominated the 660-yard run and occasionally won the lOO-yard dash. Both Howell and Hartman were the only C trackmen who quali- fied for the all-CIF finals. Placing in most of the meets the Pilots lacked the kick at the finish which is needed to win. However, valuable experience was gained. Prac- tice developed skill in the relays which in several meets decided the winner. Baton passing, starts, and kicks have been improved. Palmer ran close in the low hurdles and made more than his share of points, and proved one of the most valuable members of the squad. The light weights of this past year will be the future track team who will be out for the Pacific League Track Crown. an-P' ROW1 R Dua: J Furfon M De Leon K Hartman D Gasper H Hafllgar R Gentry ROW 2 R Johnson F Hooper Coach Vernon G Huff J Veyna J Hashngs gdzde 3'0lfeI'5 M De Leon, R Gentry, J Hashngs Excelsior s cross country team tm :shed a rather unsuccessful season wunnlng only one meet Occurrnng In the falll In competutuon with football nt attracts only the true lovers of the cnnder sport because nt ns a team rather than an unduvudual sport as track Thelr one victory of the yeor wos o one snded trounclng over Alhambra hugh led by Ralph Gentry Jam l-lastlngs and Marcnano De Leon The distance runners run a course from a mule and on eughth to a mule lt was under the dsrectuon of Mr Vernon, who dad a tune yob ln his first year at Excelsror 127 5, .6 5 Er 43 . 1 . f ff f 5 f' 51. l lj ii 1 5 Q 1 3 'l f ' il f fl ' 1' v . .
