EM, W W We e Q A M IT A n Ujkfffff f ty., Getting out an annual, and facing all the problems involved, could be quite simple under ideal condi- tions. lust what ideal conditions would be, l don't know, and l doubt seriously that any one else does. Needless to say, the situation faced by this year's staff was far from ideal. First of all we were faced with a steadily growing student body. Secondly due to financial reasons, which I never was able to understand too clearly, we couldn't lengthen the book by more than eight pages and still hope to meet our budget halfway. Possibly the most important decision to be made by the staff was the selection of a theme. ln our Monday afternoon meetings, we gave serious thought to several suggestions. Prominent among them was the '49er idea, also the Gold Rush angle came in for discussion. But we decided to be different from most of the other schools in the state that are using this general field as their theme. And so we selected MUSIC as the nucleus out of which the I949 edition of EI Aviador was to evolve. Our selection of a musical theme was based on several things, first the fact that Excelsior's music department has made such an outstanding name for itself in recent years. And secondly, the fact that it seemed like a good idea with lots of possibilities. Now that you have your copy, my only hope is that you enjoy it as much as those of us on the staff enioyed preparing it for you. RALPH GEORGE 4' Edit-of A 9 ' ' ji, .4+ 'J ml Es
