Dan Nickum, Business Manager s, 1 N X cjowmvwf EM, W W We e Q A M IT A n Ujkfffff f ty., Getting out an annual, and facing all the problems involved, could be quite simple under ideal condi- tions. lust what ideal conditions would be, l don't know, and l doubt seriously that any one else does. Needless to say, the situation faced by this year's staff was far from ideal. First of all we were faced with a steadily growing student body. Secondly due to financial reasons, which I never was able to understand too clearly, we couldn't lengthen the book by more than eight pages and still hope to meet our budget halfway. Possibly the most important decision to be made by the staff was the selection of a theme. ln our Monday afternoon meetings, we gave serious thought to several suggestions. Prominent among them was the '49er idea, also the Gold Rush angle came in for discussion. But we decided to be different from most of the other schools in the state that are using this general field as their theme. And so we selected MUSIC as the nucleus out of which the I949 edition of EI Aviador was to evolve. Our selection of a musical theme was based on several things, first the fact that Excelsior's music department has made such an outstanding name for itself in recent years. And secondly, the fact that it seemed like a good idea with lots of possibilities. Now that you have your copy, my only hope is that you enjoy it as much as those of us on the staff enioyed preparing it for you. RALPH GEORGE 4' Edit-of A 9 ' ' ji, .4+ 'J ml Es 0 LU N D E With the deft touch of one who approaches perfection, Millard Lunde has successfully wielded his baton to bring music appreciation closer to the hearts and minds of the students. Under his capable leadership, both orchestra and band have attained great heights in the field of high school music. For his magnificent achievements in ExceIsior's behalf, we dedicate this 1949 EL AVIADOR to Mr. Lunde. ,dill ' A .l. 3 gl g , i 1 -9- dac, fr Ig' fbr 'fr 'D I. H. Reed. Superintendent Ralph F. Burnight, our impresario, has proceeded to carry out his duties as Superintendent with un- tiring effort. His determination and enthusiastic attitude have made him an admired and understanding person who has the welfare of the com- munities, the administra- tion, the faculty and the students always in mind. Above all, he has upheld the standards of the school and projected the demo- cratic ideals which Excel- sior represents. Board of Trustees Working hard to benefit our school, the Board of Trustees sets the tempo for student activties. This group is composed of five representatives, one from each district, and al- though they are not often seen by the students, their industrious and sincere attitude is reflected in the success of our school. To them we owe our earnest appreciation, for their only reward is in our ultimate satisfaction. arles Kendle M. T. Killingsw th M. M. Haskell A E. Sommer, President R. R. Utterback, C Principal With the growth of Excelsior, came the neces- sity of creating a new ad- ministrative position, that of Principal. How appro- priate that Excelsior's first principal should be a Pilot alumnus, Richard Cahr! Through his work at Excel- sior first as teacher, then as head of the English de- partment, last year in the couselor's office, and now in his new position Mr. Cahr has fulfilled his job with determination and an idealism which is an exam- ple for all of us. Vice - Principal Acting as the director of curriculum and instruc- tion, Miss Bernice Rankin has efficiently held the office of Vice-Principal with a dignity and charm admired by everyone at Excelsior. Her ability at organization has been re- sponsible to a large degree for making Excelsior's edu- cational program progres- sive and functional. Girls' Vice-Principal Perhaps no one per- son has done more to influence and guide the girls of Excelsior High than Miss Lucile Tombs. It is her considerate leadership that causes girls to admire and respect her. With her ease of manner and the indus- trious way in which she goes about her numerous duties, it is Miss Tombs to whom the girls look as she sets the example for them. Boys' Vice- Principal Devoting a great deal of time to the stu- dent body government as well as the Boys' League, Mr. Donald Lund has worked steadily throughout the year to help and advise the students of Excelsior. It has been his aim to guide the students in working out a better student body government. Though Mr. Lund has been here only two years, his good nature and sense of humor have helped to make a place for him here. Counselor Miss Elizabeth Watkins has been an inspirational guide to many students in urg- ing and aiding them to plan their courses to fit the future. By her warm, understanding attitude she has won for herself many last- ing friends. Business Manager Mr. Henry Kors- meier has done an excellent job of han- dling the school fi- nances for the l948- I949 term. He has skillfully handled the tremendous task of managing school ex- penses. Dlreelor of Attendance Several unique and necessary changes were made in the at- tendance system this year under the direc- tion of Mr. Harold Wulke. As attendance supervisor he has been constantly alert to the responsibilities t h a t his position offers. mn Zig , .. -- 5635-1 1 L 5 W My HX ,vt S1 -in M ,H fe 5 MQ wfeg ' WEL I 1 A . - by-fgig W il KY A125 lif,Jf5TL2zK.w Q X1 ,, . -fl I v f' , x rf ITN A..-f 'isa' hun LUCILLE ANDERSON. All-in-all, l948-l949 has proved to be a very successful and enjoyable year. Bod fficers I 943 - H149 FIRST SEMESTER First semester activities were ably directed by Bette Breid, vice-president: Lola Wright, secretary, Ronald johnson, ser- geant-at-arms: Willie Manri- quez, yell leader, Donna Tho- masson, song leader and Lorna Blackie, who carried out her duties as treasurer for the en- tire year. With a song in their hearts and a smile on their faces, these capable leaders added new spirit and advancements in all phases of student activities to the already fine standard. Earn- ing merits and the snack period are only a few of their contri- butions. right. Se ary: D. omasson o SECOND SEMESTER Stepping into position in the middle of the year and main- taining the standards already formed is often hard but so efficiently accomplished by Nancy Piercy, vice-president: leanne Murrell, secretary: jim Rex, sergeant- at- arms: Bill Berger, yell leader and loan Ott, Song leader. They have truly added the finishing touches to the en- trancing rhythm of school life and have skillfully set a fine example for all to follow during the second semester of our school year. Song Leader E431 l've Got Our senior year is inclined to be one of looking forward expec- tantly to the future-of indiffer- ence to the present-and of for- getting the past. We dream great dreams of how we're going to become famous, or how we're going to make the world a perfect place in which to live. Every ship is romantic ex- cept the one we are riding on in our estimation. Remember our first day on the campus? Perhaps we were a tri- fle bewildered and even a little frightened, but by the time the frosh party rolled around we felt a part of the school-and most of us decided it wasn't so bad after all. Brumley Our Barnyard Boogie in the sophomore year set a new trend in dances: for the woman was requested to pay . Dreamy music beneath a ceiling draped with blue angel-hair and scattered with silver stars highlighted our all-school-dance Stardust , and showed the rest of the school we could be sophisticated too! Skirts came down below the knee, and yo-yos were all the rage by the time we were juniors. Mo- naco blue sweaters with very modern letters arrived, and soon after we were ordering our senior rings. Baccalaureate services now areover, and attercommencement we mighty seniors are ready to challenge and try to remodel the world. Who knows? Maybe some of us will succeed. Their snappy green and white uniforms lend color to all the activities in which they participate. Under the leadership of Gary Angle, drum major, and Bob Biro, student conductor, the band entered many musical events besides taking part in the half- time activties during football games. Although they engage in many activities during the year, such as taking part in half-time activities during the S.C. Trojan-Washington Huskies game, they found time to give a concert at the Pomona Fair and to present their traditional Spring Swing. Under the direction of Mr. Lunde the band has in the past years grown from a group of 20 to an organ- ization numbering almost l00 students. The banner bearers, headed by joyce Letts, had an active year and were always seen preceding the band in all of the activities the band performed in during the year, including the Spring Swing. Six little girls in green may well be the name of the flag twirlers this year. They were seen doing their routines in the half-time activities during football Strutting in front of the band to the tune of our school songs and others, the peppy majorettes were one of the main attractions of the band. Lola Wright served as head majorette again this year. Tom Stewart, john Herbst, and Rich- ard Cahoon as band managers had the important job of caring for the band instruments on special trips. For a while the general opin- ion seemed to be that the book would consist of a cover only, but gradually, with a little persuasion, the copy came in. Needless to say the persuasion came from El Aviador's adviser, Mrs. Brine- gar. With her few brief comments ring- ing in his ears, every member of the staff pitched in and helped everyone else in order to meet the deadline. H. Yost, C. Klug, I. Iuckson, R. George. D. Nickum, P. Ogilvie, E. Brinegax s1sXxwmms Qm.Xwssm mss , six-N-Q ax Q M.. , , ,, If you had looked into room 75 dur- ing sixth period this last semester, any number of things might have attracted your attention. If you happened to peek over Linda's shoulder now and then, you'd be liable to find her sketching away on every spare piece of paper trying to get ideas for the illustrations. The really hectic days were those when Danny would shout at the top of his lungs while he paced back and forth across the room wildly exclaiming, for the benefit of all within hearing dis- tance, that his books iust wouldn't bal- ance or that the ads were all mixed up and the measurements were wrong. Then Claude would dash into the room after running all the way from the photography class with a long list of retakes on pictures. As he would burst into the room he'd shout at the top of his lungs, Ralph! Meanwhile you would be able to hear ludy in the back- ground begging to let her tag along to the boys' gym while he took pictures of the basketball squads. As far as Ralph, the editor, was con- cerned, work on El Aviador never came to a finish. Many afternoons were spent, long after the 3 o'clock bell had rung, reading copy and planning layouts. Ioyce could always be found standing by to help out where needed and to lis- ten patiently to everyone's problems. Somehow she usually managed to straighten things out again. And so the class went. It began with the choosing of the theme, color, and dedication which carried out the theme so very well. From there it went to the planning of the layout, to the writing and preparing of the copy, moved on to the scheduling and mounting of the pic- tures-until at last only the proofread- ing remained. And so here it is at last-your 1949 EI Aviador. Years from now you may be digging it out again to glance through it. lt'll give you a few laughs, maybe a few pleasant memories of the good times you've had this year. Above-K. Fujita, D. Muddux, C. With C.S.F. membership soaring the number of sealbearers hit an all time high as did the activities of the Scholar- ship group. In place of the usual two trips, three were taken this year. First semester a group attended the district banquet where jim Rex was elected district presi- dent for the coming year. A theater trip and a regional conference were attended by second semester members. A larger body of students than ever before rep- resented Excelsior at the conference. -lg ' if- I l FIRST SEMESTER OFFICERS: Dee Ann Mills, sec.: Lael Iohnson. vice-pres.: Rich- ard Reger. sgt-at-arms: Lyle Ferry. pres. The San Bernardino game marked the end of a footbal season that saw the Air- men eleven a first rate, but not victori- ous ball club. ln their second tilt of the '48 season, the Airmen Varsity humbled a strong Pasadena eleven, 12-6 on the losers own turf. The game saw the Pilots put up a great fight, with Walls off tackle and Ruhlen on a 95 yard kickoff runback, score for the Excelsior squad. The I. V. gridders were sparked by the aggressive and shifty running of Gary Emery and Charley Hernandez, while the holes were held open by Hugh Dum- beck, Bill Kotake, and Warren Davis. The Airmen eleven found themselves defeated by Wilson, I8-0, El Monte, l2-6, Saint Anthonys, 20-6, Poly, 39-0, Whittier, 24-13, and tied I3-l3 by Al- hambra. Although the gridders were some- what unsuccessful, the most important thing gained was the experience that will give many of the players a good chance at first string varsity next year. Losing the championship in their last game Excelsior's Cees finished their season second best as hard luck hounded them all the way. With a seasons record of 3-2-l Excelsior dropped El Monte and Mark Keppel, battled Alham- bra to a nothing to nothing tie only to lose to a spirited Whittier team I2-6. Baseball With the prospect of a fine ball- club for the I949 baseball season, the Airmen varsity horsehiders are gunning for their fifth straight win as this copy goes to press. Sparked by the aggressive playing of Ed Pat- rick, Leroy Kammer, Bill Towne and others, Coach Hendrick's men will have not only good pitching but some players to back up the pitch- ers. Under the able guidance of Coach Daniels, a star lettermen on the University of California, L. A. ball club, and a new member of the Excelsior coaching staff, the Air- men juniors look as if they might shine brightly as a working team. Even if the team isn't too success- ful as a winning ball club the out- look is bound to be good from the experience angle. MgE ' llama. M . Kcllman. Coa h D l S L G lloway. H. Forster . Andreoli , . The playday at Poly, climaxing the basketball season, ended successfully for the Excelsior teams. SPEEDBALL Instead of hockey this year, speed- ball, which caused plenty of sore mus- cles but a lot of fun, took its place. Helen Boone was in charge and Excelsior acted as hostess for the playday. MODERN DANCING Modern Dancing is one of the sports offered the second semester. Working very hard to make it a success, were lean Pardee and her assistant, Irene Hol- Ienbeck. RECREATIONAL GAMES Badminton, horse-shoes, ping-pong are only a few of the games played in Recreational Games. lean Allen, with the co-operation of this group, made it a successful quarter of sports. SOFTBALL Softball always seems to have the largest turnout and this year was no exception. Dee Ann Mills did a fine iob of keeping these girls active all quarter. Association SONG LEADING Barbara Heinemann skillfully instruc- ted this group of interested girls in rou- tines of song leading. This was climaxed as Excelsior played hostess to the song leaders of several different schools. BEGINNERS' TENNIS To be the master of a few tennis strokes is the goal of Beginners' Tennis. With luanice Brister's able manage- ment, the girls learned a few of the basic steps of playing good tennis. TOURNAMENT TENNIS As tennis players, they proved their ability by taking second place at the Wilson playday. Lael johnson filled the position of manager. Emerging as the victor for her third straight year for the Girls Champion- ship title, was Mary Lou Martin. Con- gratulations, Mary Lou! TUMBLING Tumbling is one of the favo rite sports. It is so well liked that it is held for two quarters. Capable Marjorie lack- son was the manager. VOLLEYBALL Lots of girls, lots of fun. -that was the result of volleyball under the cap- able management of Alice Hofstra. Pla- cing second at the Wilson playday con- cluded the volleyball season.
