NAID R. I.ltND. Boys' Vice-i'rincipal This year Mr. Richard Gahr has assumed the added duties of Acting Counselor, combining these new tasks with those already acquired as Director of Guidance. The programs, the educational plans, and the vocational plans of each student are carefully considered by Mr. Cahr. He is cognizant of the needs of every Excelsiorite and has been generous with his time. showing patience and knowledge in assisting students with their plans for the present and the future. RICHARD GAHR M ting Counselor Carrying out the complexities of the attendance laws of the state of California in a large school district are the major duties of Director of Attendance, Mr. Frank Little. Always a busy section of the campus before school are the windows of the main office, where, through the fine work of lVlr. Little and his staff, the attendance problems of Excelsioris absentees are considered with care. The Director of Attendance serves Excelsior as a link between the school, the parents. and the students. FRANK LITTLE Dner tor of Attendance No large educational institution can function without a sound financial foundation. The position of Business Manager, in the capable hands of lVlr. Henry Korsmeier, is one of responsibility. Through careful planning and execution of approved plans, Mr. Korsmeier sees that the necessary funds are available for the needs of each department, that the budget is carefully balanced, and that maintenance of old and construction of new buildings on the expanding campus of Excelsior are carried on with the greatest of efficiency for all concerned. 'Qi vet 101 SIENIIOR VPDILXW HJUNIOR MISS With the last pre-curtain coaching by Mr. Valen- tine, the director, the fate of the Senior play, Junior lVliss,,, was left in the hands of the cast and student production staff. The usual thoughts of entrances. quick changes, and the million and one things which might go wrong flashed through the minds of the cast as the house lights dimmed. With professional skill the cast took Junior lVIiss', by Chodorov and Fields, so long a hit on Broadway. and enthralled a record audience both performances. Again, as in the Junior play, Mr. Stanley acted as technical director, and Miss Cage was in charge of the costuming to contribute to the all over success of the play. With a background of Christmas season in a modern New York apartment, the story of Junior Missi, unfolds. J The story centers around the antics of incor- rigible 13-year-old Judy Graves and her lovable, fascinating family. Harry Graves is the irascible father of Judy and her 16-year-old pseudo-sophisticated sister, Lois. Judy's matchmaking proves a strain on the family, causing Harry to lose his job and nearly separating the Craveses. But, all is well at the conclusion of act three when the family is back on its never too even keel. With Loisis boy friends, the poker games, Fuffy's unpredictable remarks, and Hilda, the maid's sober faced disconcern, the play was literally a howling success . L. 0rem,M. Doak, D. Barton C. Excelsior Montebello Excelsior Chaffey Excelsior Alhambra Excelsior El Monte Excelsior Mark Keppel Excelsior Wilson Excelsior Whittier Still riding the crest of the most phenomenal sports era Excelsior has ever experienced, the Airman crowned themselves C. I. F. Champions with a record of seven league wins against one tie, thus placing them among the top teams of Southern California in 1947. The skyrocketing Pilots distinguished themselves against their arch rivals, the Whittier Cardinals, who had hoped to send the high flying Airmen into a tailspin. However, the Excelsior Pilots took off at the first gun of the season, opened wide the throttle, and opposed all competition to come home 'mission accomp- lished.' Wliilz' rather slow in their first part of the Montehello game, these hoys hroke out in front to a victory of 26-12, showing their speed and strength. Traveling to Ontario to meet the Chaffey Tigers, the Pilots had no trouhle winning the score 25-0. Taking their fourth straight win, these hoys dropped the Alhambra Moors in a tight game, 141-7. The hard driving hoys took the El Monte Lions hy the tail to the tune of 33-O. By allowing the hopeless Lions to penetrate only to the Excelsior twenty yard line was the only close call to a touchdown hy the underdogs. 'llhe Pilot eleven, led hy Alert Don Walls, wrung a close 6-0 win out ol second place Mark Kep- pel. Flashy Charlie Ruhlen, hy contrihuting his 12 points to the final 26-7 tally helped keep the Airmen's undefeated record intact, with the Wilson Bruins on the short end of the score. Many fumhles marring the hereto nnexcelled hall handling of the Excelsior eleven, led to the 0-0 tie on the Whittier Cardinal field. Sixty minutes of hard fighting, rough and tumble, and scoreless foothall hrought to the close the second straight season of championship foothall. Third quarter of girls' sports offers the opportunity of learning these movements to the girls of Excelsior. This Year, Dorothy Con- way managed the sport. and IVI i s s Phelan acted as atl- viser to those desirous girls who were interested in ile- veloping th i s manner of gracefulness. T UIMIBILIINCI past few years. has steadily become one of the most pop- ular sports among the girls of Excelsior. This year. llulllllg Sf'l'Ol1ll semester. peppy l,ola Wright took the job of manager. anfl lVliss Houlet and lVliss Dexter served as advisers. The girls were coached to perfection on various stunts, ancl. as per usual. had their sore muscles at first. All were ambitious, nevertheless, to learn an d showed more than enougn enthusiasm when any new stunt was undertaken. lBASllQlETIBAlLlL Basketball started with lrene La Pointe getting the ball bouncing. and lVliss Hawn as her adviser refereeing the season. The girls were guarding against timeg yet each team came forward with their best and all did their part in keeping the game lively. Much competition was offer- ed, together with loads of fun and interest for all. The center attraction of the season was the winners and runners-up traveling to Poly for a playday. This playday proved to be very successful both in enjoyment and a number of ringers for our Excelsior girls. There was a game between the girls, gym teachers and the winners for the first semester sports' banquet, but the teachers were a little too good for the girls. Thus ended the feature of girls' basketball for another year. 130 More girls were out this year for volleyball than ever before at Excelsior. The girls showed that they were not only interested in games of individuality hut also the thrills of group participation. There were several teams formed and each team had the vim, vigor. and vitality of a winning team. Une group. however. had even hetter teamwork than the others and Came out victorious. The season came to a grand finale with this team and runners-up traveling to Wilson for a playday. The hard job of managing volleyball was given to Jenny l.opez. who did very commendable work. With Miss Hawn and Miss Dexter as advisers, the volleyball went over the net to victory at the Wilson playday. 131 IHIUCIIQEY The lmall was set rolling tliirrl quartf-r in liovlwy willi .lanes Salianiato avting as managvr mul Miss flawn, Miss Davison, and Miss l,ar-y, livr aclrisvrs. This year the girls showed an even more enthusiastic liking for the sport. Coming out in full force from the xery first. they were in there batting for their team throughout the whole quarter. The upper-classmen found pretty stiff competition from the members of the Freshman and Sophomore classes. Harriet Ds-Boer did an excellent job as manager by keeping all those spirited females busy for the last quarter of sports. As always, much credit goes to the capable advisers. Miss Davison. Miss Lacy. and Miss Hawn. 133 A51 TIENNIIS Tournament Tennis had the largest turnout in the history of the sehool this year. Ably managed by Mona Freeman and advised by Miss Roulet, the girls av- eomplished a great deal: they worked on the perfection ot' their form and strokes, and several girls that only last-year were taking beginners tennis found themselves among the top of the group. A round-robin tournament was run off first quarter, and a ladder tournament seeond quarter for both singles and doubles. All the girls will agree that a grand time was had by all. The annual girls' singles elimination mate-hes were held in .Ianuary this year. There were many girls out, several of whom were in the tournament tennis group, but a surprisingly large number entered the matt-hes who had not been out for tennis at all during the semester. The matehes went on for two weeks, delay being eaused by rain. The finals were held between Mary l.ou Martin and Betty Seefeldt. Both girls were all out for their name on that eup, but Mary Lou eame out vietorious. Mary Lou is now a two-time winner of this honor. MARY LOU MARTIN, Tennis Champion lUl.llRNAMllENT TIENNIIS Row I. They were very anxious to learn the exciting game of tennis and were even more interested in actually beginning to play the game themselves. Betty Seefeldt and Miss Davison were manager and adviser, respectively. The first thing the girls undertook was the development of proper form and strokes. There was a good showing of material for next year's Tournament Tennis. RIHIWVIHIM SUNG ILIEADIERS With the anticipation of some day becoming school song leaders and flag twirlers, the girls started out with the rhythm and time in the marching music. The girls were also taught the fundamentals of baton twirling as well as the two stated above. A very fine time was enjoyed by the girlsg and as the end of the second quarter drew nigh. they were divided into groups of three and worked out routines and presented them to the whole group. Lola Wright, their efficient manager. together with Miss Phelan, was always willing to give a helping hand when the girls met with difficulties. SNAPSHOTS 1. Klum-k to iilwvk. 2.
