They take the part of men behind the scenes, and their only remuneration is much work and little reward, for they are paid no salaries and serve only as representatives of the com- munity. The policies of administration, the building of new struc- tures on the campus, all of the financial expenditures, come before their eyes, as do the serious discipline problems. Once a month in the Board room they meet in regular session and are subject to call at any time for special meetings. Usually their work carries them into midnight. From their number they elect a president and a clerk yearly. They serve for a period of three years and are eligible for reelection. Whatever blame there is goes to the school board, but, before that, a lot of credit is due them. The success and future of Excelsior is very much in their hands. W. L. SCI-IEIFELE M. T. KILLINGSWORTH J. H. REED ARTHUR KULZER WILLIAM CHALMERS President Clerk

PHI CIP L At Excelsior for the past twelve years, Mr. Burnight, has been successively a history teacher, Dean of Boys, and now superinten- dent. Among his experiences are posts at the University of Peking in China where he taught for two years: and a position at a high school in Fresno. He graduated from Redlands Hi h School Magna Cum Laude and from the University of Southern Cali- fornia. Here he was forced to finish work in five semesters because of the War and, serving the United States as a lieutenant in the Hospital Corps, was contented with the distinction of a Cum Laude degree at his graduation. After coming back from France he re- turned to private life. He has a red haired twin sister, is married. and has three children. Very modest about his achievements, a Phi Beta Kappa key with which he was honored a few years ago seems always to be upside down so that the insignia is hidden from view of anyone curious. He is a good friend of U. S. C.'s eminent professor, Dr. Emory Bogardus, and works with him frequently. He can be considered an authority on social problems and the thesis for his Master's degree has been printed and is in the Congressional Library for reference. He is very much interested in music and, although one of California's youngest high school principals, is very much a human being. Dean uf Buys Mr. Longshore was born some- where in Nebraska, but doesn't know exactly where. When about ten he came to Los Angeles. After grad- uating from the University of South- ern California, he went to teach in South America. He lived there for several years near the city of Lima, Peru. Outside of school one of his chief delights is playing bridge. He o build, has three houses to his and is planning another. Be- fore coming to Excelsior he taught at National City and at Calexico, near the Mexican border. He now handles the discipline problems of Excelsior's boys and likes his work very much. He is married and has a family of f three daughters, past and future Ex- celsior graduates. Y' ' -' ' I
