Every student is an important person on our campus and it shows everywhere you look in EAGLE COUNTRY. Throughout the year, we have the chance to mature both academically and socially with school being at the very heart of our lives. Walk the grounds of EAGLE COUNTRY and you soon realize why Eagles are the best: we've got the spirit and the pride to be the best in every way. EAGLES are Very M l ,,y 3 :Wi 5 ltloti by A 4 Important People DEDICATION The EAGLE SPIRIT for 1981 is dedicated to Mr. John May. It is by his direct leadership and guidance over the past years that Everitt has become the best Junior High school in Bay County. We are proud to have this fine man in the principal's office. He tries to treat all the students as if they were his very own and this is a tremendous responsi- bility that he assumes successfully. He loves to see his past students who have become successful in life be- cause he feels he played a role in their success. We are honored to dedicate this book to Mr. May. Mr. May received his undergraduate degree from Tulane Univ. After serving 44 months in the U.S. Navy during W.W. ll, he received his Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College. He coached football at Mainland H.S. in Daytona Beach and coached with Doug Dickey at the University of Tennessee while working as an academic counselor. Mr. May then moved to Panama City to become the principal of Everitt Jr. High. 6 Mr. May is a dedicated family man. He and his wife Starke have four children. Vivian lives in Atlanta where she is a teacher and her husband is a principal. Billy is enrolled at Gulf Coast Community College and the twins David and Daryl attend Everitt Jr. High. Starke teaches elementary school. Mr. May has received the following distinctions: ' Nominated for the Teacher of the Year in 1960 ' Nominated for the U.S. Principal of the Year in 1960 and placed Third in competition ' Who's Who in Florida in 1964 ' Who's Who in THE SOUTH in 1967 ' Honorary degree-Bethune-Cookman College, Day- tona ' Outstanding Volusia County Citizen in 1964 ' Halifax Area BOSS OF THE YEAR in 1964 ' Bay County BOSS OF THE YEAR in 1977 7 MR. They put on a fantastic show very much like the professional performances they give at the Ocean Opry. lt is great to have them come out to Everitt and share their time and talent with us. Mitchell Connie's Card 8t Gift Shop Mrs. Myra Terry Monette's Fashions Looking at the Past . As the heat of August and Septem- ber slowly cooled into the autumn of '80, Everitt students stayed on the move as the football season flew past. As the cold winds of winter swept across our campus, the sil- louette of an eagle passed over and the year changed from 1980 to 1981. The new Eagles began making Everitt their home and the old Eagles didn't have long to go. 140 ix 1 XXX N As predictable as the morning an- nouncements, spring came to Ever- itt in March of '81. With the help of our excellent teachers, we learned to walk, to run, and finally, to soar like an eagle. 3 , ii ii Uhknxmgyg Smit S,,..e,, Top Photo: The Band performing at its best for the home crowd. Top right: Now place the ice cubes in the crock pot and see what happens. Center left: Another lively PE class. Center right: Pay attention and it will make sense to you real soon. Bottom: What is Mr. May Cooking up now? 141 And Looking at the Future The bald eagle had to soar through turbulant air as it passed over our nation. The Iranian Iraqi War started and the economy did not improve. But, the eagle also flew for freedom and brought 150,000 Cuban refugees to our country. This past year, President Carter signed the pay raise and Presi- dent Nixon took office in January. In our school, we had a salad bar added to the lunchroom and it was a success. Our band was terrific as always and Mr. Brownlee was welcomed as the new di- rector. And gradually, the year passed on. Left: Getting out of class at lastl Top right: The Band pleases the crowd. Center: Laurie sees something in the bleachers. Bottom: Another enthusiastic student rushes to get off the bus and get the school day started. 142 ff It was a happy year through and through and many people will re- member it with smiles on their faces. And so as the eagle soars, so shall our hopes, ambitions, and the future in the oncoming years. Top: Students meet to talk at the start ot a new day. Center: Looking at a great play and an exciting game. Bottom left: Making some interesting remarks on Beta Club. Bottom right: The grace of football and a kick to a great beginning. 143 w fa 74? :Q 3' I E 2 + , I 9 iv 'if , 9 I l I1 4 . I -1- 'D ,Y 3335 555 532 W Q .5 W is El M. 1,3 if . . Fi - YS . 4 3. ,.
