i gl -Q 'Xl The cornerstone of our building's patchwork is the tree-lined cen- tral courtyard. The diverse spread of the school is easily observed here, from the sometimes sweet-smelling Home Ec. kitchens to the looming three-story academic wing, the sleek two-story pool addition, and to the cafeteria, where students can enjoy a panoramic View of the courtyard be- tween classes that more often than not meet in windowless rooms. Don't admire the view from the courtyard for too long, howeverg the beauty is decidedly dimished when the doors are locked from the other side. Fanning out in all directions from the courtyard are the warp and woof of the build- ing's patchwork: the hallowed halls. In a sense, the halls serve as threads holding the patchwork together. Vital communications and notes such as green slips zip along the halls at blinding speeds, and off -season track and cross-country athletes ' lope along at lesser speeds. Stairways, on the other hand for, more appropriately, footj, enable our academic planners to offer a wide range of gymnastic activities. Without stairways, our vertical pathways, new courses such as Third-Floor Jump Off , and How to Leap Three Stories in a Single Botmd would have to be added to the curricultun. Without a doubt, an attractive and efficient physical setting is a vital component of Evergreen's patchwork. X

P t h b h piece by piece, our high school has evolved from a tiny a C Y , nine-classroom facility in 1955 to a sprawling, three-story edifice with more janitor's closets than the original school's total of rooms. While each patch was being com- pleted, the students rapidly adapted to the disordered surroundings. During the period when Math classes were held in the girls' gym, the baskets were still put to good use. Students swished the nets with crumpled-up math packets. Their adaptability is a key element in any patchwork! iniuhi?
