Dedication In the previous years dedication has been somewhat an “In Memory”.page. This year we feel that our dedication should be designated to events that happened during the year to make Evergreen even more of a school than what it has been in the past. We, the Evergreen Valhalla Staff, dedicate this yearbook to all the events this year that had a beginning at our great school. • Here are just a few of the many that took place: Obtaining the Victory Bell. Having our first Mascot. First winning football season. First winning basketball season. First track meet win. First girl's track team. First Walk-A-Thon for March of | Dimes. First Drum Major. The hopes, dreams, and happiness are now a blessing of yesterday. You have given us something our hearts cannot forget. Only the photographs and memories are left to remind us of the moments spent in our friendship. But in the while that we think of you, all losses are restored, and the bitter sorrow is lessened. And in our hearts there is 5 a whispering that you are near. Afterall, heaven is not all so distant! Seniors of Tomorrow? Seniors of the Month Mike Lindsay - September George Woodring - October Cheryl Schmitz - November Linda Scheuer - March Tom Himelhan - April Mark Delauter - May 9 A Tribute to Seniors The class of '74 has finally made it through four years together. We can now look back and reflect on the good times. Our freshman year the class of '74 entered Evergreen wondering what it would be like. We soon found out as Homecoming plans soon began. Our attendents Diane Borland and Kay Simmons rode on a covered wagon with our theme being Paint Your Wagon Green and Gold for our first float. Then of course came all the initiations into various clubs. G.A. A. was quite something as girls ran around asking the senior boys to a dance. Of course they nev- er accepted. Our first Mardi Gras was exciting as Bev Herrick and Dennis Overmyer rep- resented our class. Many of our frosh discovered their acting ability as Bye Bye Birdie was cast. It was a huge success and we discovered we'd made it through our first year. As fall arrived we entered as sophomores and discovered we could now sell passes to the swimming pool to the new frosh, the class of '75. Homecoming again started the year out right with our theme We've Only Just Begun with Cheryl Downing and Annette Wilson being our attendants. We had indeed just begun because we were getting better all the time as we gained confidence, we no longer were afraid of upperclassmen nor did we rush to class as the first bell rang each morning, we knew our way around by then. Spring arrived and brought the Mardi Gras with Cathy O'Neil and Tom Himelhan representing us. As school closed our class rings came in and stones were flashed everywhere. Report cards came out and most of us discovered we'd passed American History. Our junior year rolled in and we realized it would be great, and we were right. We knew our class was the greatest and had the most spirit as we had proven in the past two years, by winning spirit week, class competition and skit competition. We knew we could do it for four years and we did. Homecoming was great as Cathy O'Neil and Bev Herrick rode on our 1st place float entitled Rub-A-Dub-Dub . We now had a problem with Homecoming over, we realized we needed money for our Prom. A paper drive was decided upon and was a huge success. A Prom would be held, the theme would be Country Gardens . First though, the Mardi Gras was on hand and Sue Miller and Jim Ritter represented the class of '74 well. On April 27 and 28th 1973 the halls of EHS were converted to Gardens as the Jr. -Sr. Prom was held and was the best Prom Evergreen had ever seen. The school year ended with the juniors hoping to be SENIORSI Our senior year started as any had and Bev Herrick, Cheryl Downing and Kay Simmons vying for Homecoming Queen. Our float entitled The Morning After went around the track and Kay was crowned. Next our Senior pictures arrived and we really felt like Seniors. The Mardi Gras rolled in again and the Seniors came out triumphant with Sue Kalnbach escorted by Mark Baker being crowned Mardi Gras Queen. Our class has had many good times in these halls, we've laughed, joked, had parties • and made new friends. That's why it was hard for most of us to think about leaving. But I believe our class can and will make something great of themselves. . The poster at the right, was made to go along with the write up above. It is ftiade up of pictures of activ- ities the Seniors did throughout the year. If you will notice the middle, it symbolizes our graduating year 74 and is framed with other pictures. This poster will he remembered by Sen- iors as the years pass and memories fade. We would like to thank Linda Simpkins for making this for us and writing such a thoughtful article. 10 MARK RICHARD BAKER Farme-- Boys' State 3; Valhalla Staff 4; Valhalla Officer 4 REBECCA JANE BAKER Best Writer Class Officer 2; Vikette 2; Valhalla Staff 3; Viking Legend Staff 3,4; FFA 3,4; Reporter 4; Gun Club 3,4; President 4; Prom Attendant 3; Parliamentary Proce- dures Team 4 LAURENCE D. ACTIVITIES 1973-74 HOMECOMING . ■■ K A y M M o N Right in the middle of 40 acres, there was a homecoming happening and everybody came. It all started out at 2:00 p. m. Friday afternoon with a very rousing pep session and ended at 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning with a still more rousing square dance and very tired feet. What's this all about? Well the victorious football game between Evergreen and Fairview, of course. At half-time, everyone’s spirit was super activated as the Vikes led by a score of 22-6. And everyone else knows the biggest part of the homecoming is the parade of floats and the crowning of the queen. The coronation was a tense time for each of us, as we all wondered who would be the queen to reign over the homecoming dance. As Miss Debbie Donahue stepped up to relinquish her crown, the crowd let out a cheer as this year's queen. Miss Kay Simmons, happily accepted it. After all the excitement at half-time was over, the football players came down to earth to smash the Apaches with the final score 30-6, only to return to their heavenly cloud =1. hollowing the football game came the usual homecoming dance. The gym seemed to be filled to capacity as the band. The Week-N-Ders, threw out a few tunes to square dance and polkas. For the underclassmen, this was something that will happen again next year and they will sense the excitement all over again. But for the Seniors, it was something special, for this is their last year and the last time they will be involved in working to- gether as a class on a project such as this one was. All in all, the night turned out a great success. Everyone went home tired, but happy. 42 Pictured at the Left: Last year’s Homecoming Queen, Miss Debbie Donahue crowning this year’s Queen, Miss Kay Simmons at the half time of the Evergreen-Fairview football game. Standing at her right is her brother, Paul Simmons who es- corted her across the field. At the right is Jeff Bickford riding on the Senior float and clowning around as usual. Their theme being Dead Apache in the Middle of the Road brought smiles from the on- lookers as tlie mighty Viking driving behind the dead Apache con- tinues to triumph. ) IOMP aprch£5 44 Above: Ah yes! Another touchdown for our side. It goes to show that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Right: It was kind of a nippy night but that didn’t discourage the Viking fans from coming out to cheer. Not only were the football players psyched up for the game, but the entire school too, as you can see by the enthusiasm of the crowd. Diane Kreuz and Carol Clay are impatiently awaiting the coro- nation. A big thanks goes to Mr. Griffin and the band members for their performances at the half time of the home games. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This might be the circumstance here if 84, Chris Mil- ler, succeeds to knock over 80 from Fairview. 45 The Vikings were really hot that nite as they confronted the so- called brave” Apaches. The Junior float portrays this idea as their theme was en- titled TheyTl Have A Hot Time In The Ole Town Tonite . Amiss in the flames stood a feeble teepee and an overpowering Viking totem pole. Good work! The first place float belongs to the Sophomores. As you can see, they put a lot of work into this float and well deserved first place. Their theme was Apache-Hang On To Your Life”. It con- sisted of a dead Apa- che hanging helpless- ly by its neck at the bow of the ship. In this contest of the floats, the first place winners re- ceived $25 for their class. I - ► ' I ■: , . ■ And as always, saving the best for last, the indescribable Senior float. If you look close enough you will sec that they weren't too far off in their prediction of 44-0, but after our massacring win, the Apaches would just as soon have been in their graves. General Patton and Stock- well Jackson our fearless Continental On the evening of March 29, 1974 the Language Club and the GAA presented the Continental Encore. This year the Mardi Gras and Dance Concert were combined to form the Continental Encore, because of the energy crisis. The coronation of queen took place at the end of the program. There were four candidates, one from each class. Voting took place weeks before the Continental Encore by putting money in four ballet cans during the students lunch hour. This years candidates were: Senior: Sue Kalnbach, escort Mark Baker, Junior: Becky Stutzman, escort Steve Leoffler, Sopho- more: Nina Leal, escort Fred Mack, Freshman: Peggy Wyse, escort Thad Bick, and last year's queen Peggy Gillen, escort Dan Baker. The Senior can had the most money in it and Senior, Sue Kalnbach, was crowned queen. Thanks to Miss Hathaway and Mrs. Summons, it was a big success. 50 Encore 51 Juniors Workday Every year on the day before the prom, the juniors get the day off to get a head start on decorating the gym. This helps speed up the pro- cess of getting the gym ready so the juniors don't have to come back all day Saturday. These are just a few of the differ- ent scenes of the juniors and even advisors the Fri- day before the 1974 Junior- Senior Prom. 53 1974 Junior-Senior Prom Junior Attendants Kathie Donahue and Gary Hinkle Junior Attendants Jenny Mosiniak and Chris Miller 1974 Prom Royalty The 1974 Junior-Senior Prom was held on April 20 in the Evergreen High School Gymnasium. The theme for the prom was Roman Holiday and the gym was elaborately decorated to fit the theme. As you walked in you were greeted by two Roman soldiers. You then entered a hidden cove with a dock that took you over a seaside beach with a view of Rome to your right. Upon entering the gym, you walked through a pillared structure in the midst of a garden which then led to a shimmering fountain. The West Wall was transformed into a sidewalk cafe covered with a red and white canopy. The tables were decorated with red and white paper and accented with a red or white candle, die. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Rindy Rowland and Fritz Huber as the 1974 Queen and King of the prom. The junior attendants were Kathie Donahue and Gary Hinkle. The other couple was Jenny Mosiniak and Chris Miller. Junior Class President Sue Andrews crowning Queen Rindy Rowland and King Fritz Huber 1974 Graduation Mr. Hale's hotline to the heavens worked for the third year in a row as one hundred and thirty-three seniors walked into Pifer Field on May 26. The band under the direction of Mr. Griffin accompanied them. Rev, Dale Wyse, father of a member of the class gave the sermon. Speakers were chosen from the class. Linda Simpkins, Yvett Walker, Sue Miller, Dave Link, and Jeff Champion spoke on subjects ranging from a thank you to parents to the future of the class. Steve Mizer sang We'll Never Pass This Way Again . Many awards were given with Mark Ott being named Senior Athlete of the Year. George Woodring received the E. E. A. scholarship and Teresa Ferner was named the number one student in the class. Mr. Arlington Frantz and Mr. William Schmitz, president and vice president of the school board presented diplomas and trophies to the honor graduates. Ceremony 57 Juniors in Action JUNIORS Time really flies! Can you believe that the mighty juniors were once terribly frightened Freshmen entering the halls of Evergreen? Yes, it all started back in '71 with our first year of high school. We got right to business with the election of officers. Those chosen were: Pres - Penny Vaculik, V.'Pres. - Kathie Donahue, Sec - Barb Carr, and Treas - Connie Smith. Soon after came our annual homecoming and our class worked well together on our float with the theme of The Night We Drove Patrick Henry Down . Homecoming attendants chosen from our class were Mary Ann Inderrieden and Kathie Donahue. Another exciting feature of our Freshmen year was the annual Mardi Gras. Lynn Mosiniak represented our class well in the queen competition. She was crowned queen with Gary Hinkle as her escort. We came down in history as the first Frosh to have their candidate crowned queen. Along with all this excitement our class worked hard and won the candy sale competition held that year. This made quite an addition to the treasury. As Sophomores we had now become accustomed to the school and the people in it. Sopho- more class leaders were as follows: Pres. - Jenny Mosiniak, V. Pres - Diane Kreuz, Sec - Barb Carr, and Treas - Donna Kreuz. The homecoming float this year was decorated to the theme Victory, Victory Viking Team Show the Bulldogs All Your Steam . We were represented with Michelle and Lynn Mosiniak as our attendants. And we were again successful in the Mardi Gras with Peggy Gillen as our queen candidate. She was crowned with Phil Langenderfer as her escort. As the end of the year approached everyone awaited eagerly for the time we received our class rings. It came in a hurry and before we knew if we found ourselves Juniors. Our Junior year began with the homecoming. It was really a busy time! Our float was decorated to the theme There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight . Our attendants were Jenny Mosiniak and Diane Kreuz. Class officers were: Sue Andrews, Cindy King, Lynn Mosiniak, and Betty Brink. This year at the Mardi Gras we were not as successful with our queen candidate Becky Stutzman, who lost to the Senior candidate Susie Kalnbach. But it still proved to be an unforgettable year to everyone with the success of our Prom, Roman Gardens. As Freshmen, our class officers were: Pres - Sue Simon, V. Pres - Sherri Cox, Sec - Diane Drennan, and Treas - Renee Mel- ler. These officers started out their first year of high school getting the class together. Some of our moneymaking projects were selling cushions and candy at all our football and basket- ball games. We also sold gym bags and spirit buttons. Along with these we sponsored the Freshmen's annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. The Homecoming is a special event for each class. But as always it is something new to the Frosh. Last year the theme was to be based on a nursery rhyme. Our theme was Vikings Be Ready Vikings Be Swift, Vikings Jump Over the Goal Line Quick . Although we lost the float competition, we tried very hard. Our attendants were Jani Jones and Carolyn Miller. Then of course there is the Mardi Gras. Each class chooses a girl to compete for queen. Our class chose Lori Meeker for the candidate. She was escorted by Brad Peebles. This year as Sophomores we are more familiar with the high school. The officers that lead us are: Pres - Sherri Cox, V.Pres - Sue Simon, Sec - Chris Keefe, and Treas. - Kathy Himelhan. Up to now our moneymaking projects have been to raffle off one dozen roses for Valentine's Day. At the Homecoming this year, we really proved ourselves to the rest of the school by win- ning the float competition. This year's themes were based on popular songs. We had a tough time deciding on our theme but it proved successful. It was Hang On To Your Life. Our attendants were Karen Loeffler and Randi Eicher. This year the Mardi Gras changed the name to Continental Encore. Our candidate was Nina Leal and again we were not too successful, losing to the Senior candidate. That just about tells the story of our great class of '76. We hope that next year we will be the best class around! Everyone was excited about the first couple of days. First they had to pick class officers and student council representatives. They chose for President: Kip Gleckler, Vice President: Amy Vaculik, Secretary: Lynette Pfund, Treasurer; Angie Sylvester. Student Council members were: Mark Mizer, Julie Fleck, Zoe Vershum, Michelle Carroll and Susie Mika. Before they knew it the first football game was here and the Homecoming. Each class built a float. The theme for the freshman float was, A Dead Apache in the Middle of the Road. The attendants for Homecoming were Angie Sylvester and Patty Donahue. Escorts were Curt Ott and Terry Keeler. The next big thing was GAA initiation. Just about all the freshman girls went through this funday. All the girls who joined, dressed like a baby and carried a diaper bag around with them. It was a lot of fun and all the girls enjoyed it. The next event was the Continental Encore. The Language Club and GAA put it on. Peggy Wyse was chosen Queen Candidate. Her escort was Thad Bick. The freshman class did an excellent job of money making projects. They sold spirit buttons, football jerseys, and other things. They made more money than any other freshman class. Our cheerleaders are even ac- tive in the summer. They make new cheers up for the new season and practice the old ones. This year when the reserves came home from camp they brought back a ribbon. The varsity also went to camp and brought back many new ideas and cheers. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GIRLS!! Right: Cheryl Schmitz was the captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. When our boys won they did a really good job of it. Each game they won, they topped the other team by over 20 points. Alot of hard practice went into these games and to help the boys out was their manager Jeff Whitaker, who often cheered them on to victory. Betcha can't catch me! This year was the first winning basketball season in the history of E. H. S. One of the ingredients for Evergreen's winning sea- son was nine seniors with five returning lettermen. The Vikings were small but outrebounded every opponent except one. Since the Vikings were at a height disadvantage they made up for the height by their quickness and hus- tling defense. Defense was the big asset this year. The Vik- ings held their opponents to an average of 55 points per game. Coach of the year for A in District 7, was our own coach, Tom Swearingen. He was picked by the coaches of 58 schools in Lucas, Williams, Defiance, Wood, Paulding, Fulton, and Henry Counties. This year Dan Wyse advanced to state competition with Fred Mack as an alternate. This is the second year Evergreen has had a State competitor. Mark Ott went last year being the first for Evergreen. Mark and Dan are both graduating seniors and will be missed greatly out on the mat and in school. Coach Harrison is looking forward to an improved season next year with many more state competitors. In the 3rd period with seconds left Delta got away from Dan and with no chance for a take down, the match ended. Dan ended his season with only this tie. Right: In the Swanton match, Dan Ott 126 lbs., works for a reversal as towel man Kevin Hershberger, taps the referee ending the period. Dan won 3-0 getting his 2 points just in before the buzzer. He ended his season without losing a match in team competition. Bottom: An escape for Mark Ott is in store as they both work hard to gain positions. GAA-SPORTS This year's girls sports have been scattered and far between. It almost seemed as though they would just get started and zap, they were gone already. The games and activities the girls had were a lot of fun and gave them a lot of experience, but the school competition was another thing. It was as though the other schools just didn't want to participate and give the girls a chance to show their talent. The previous pages have shown the girls sports teams in their various areas. 107 Aetion Candids Organizations Our Kids at Four Every year Sophomores have a chance to better themselves by going to Four County their Junior and Senior years. At Four Coun- ty they can learn different trades and get a head start on their careers. After graduation some may go right into the job world while others further their educa- tion by going to two or four year schools. The students at Four County are given a chance to compete with others in their field of study. This year we had seven students place in district competition. Nancy Faber moved on to regional competition where she placed 2nd in Commercial Selling. Pam Fulton was a member of the Parliamentary Procedure team that placed 3rd at the state level. They learned how government is run on the state, county, and city levels through party cau- cases and convention elections. Model governments were set up and the boys and girls ran for and carried out different government offices. This year they are hoping to carpet the boy's locker room so they can conserve energy and keep the guy's feet from getting cold. 119 Girls Athletic Row 1:J. Mossing, B. Mossing, P. Ehrsam, J. Mr. Hershberger the advisor started this club a few years ago and it was one of the first in the state. Members of fhe club sold fruit with FFA in November to pay for various ex- penses in the club. Their National Trap Challenge was held March 13. Both a boys and a girls team was in the competition, with the boys being 3rd and the girls 2nd. Spring brought the end of shooting and the annual Gun Club Banquet. It was held at the Rock Inn in Adrian, Michigan on March 19. Each member received a trophy with team 6 being the overall winners. The participants of the winning team are Kevin Hershberger, Bill White, Pam Er- sham, Mike Carroll, and Mike Garrow. 122 Rifle Club Rifle Club; Row 1 - R. Kuney, K. Hershberger, M. Garrow, J. In 1973, Mrs. Pamela Summons introduced the idea of an organization to be formed by combining the existing French and Spanish Clubs ... So with very little opposition, the Language Club was formed. Since that time, we've really gone places--like Mexico. This sum- mer we sent two students to Saltillo, Coahuila in Mexico for a study pro- gram. The Language Club is truly fulfil- ling its purpose--to better understand other cultures. We hope to further our progress by sending some students to Canada this summer. 124 Photography Club 3rd Row; L-R; P. Marvin; Dark Room Co-Ordinator; G. Anyone who wished to join could sign up. All they had to do was get a team or- ganized. It costed $1. 50 each week to bowl. This also included substitutes who bowled in place of a regular on the team. The teams competed each week against opposing teams. They bowled three games and at the end of each game they would total the points to determine the winner. At the end of the season, a banquet was held. Trophies were awarded to people who achieved the most points in a game, the most total points, high point team, etc. In honor of this, the bowlers got to bowl a free game compliments of KC Lanes. To sum it all up the bowling club was enjoyed by everyone participating. JOURNALISM I The Viking Legend is a student paper produced by the second and third hour Journalism classes under the direction of Mrs. Pauline Stockwell. The Legend is a weekly paper aimed at expressing student opinions and informing them of student happenings. The students are required to publish the Legend during the week their turn is and on the week it doesn't come out they must write either an editorial or a human interest story. The editorials and human interest stories are used in the paper also, In the second hour class Peaches Ken- nedy was the editor and Cindy King was the co-editor. Sue Miller and Gary Kreuz were the editor and co-editor of the third hour class. Students throughout the district can buy a subscription. Single copies are sold for 10£ and subscriptions are sold for $1 per semester. 126 Journalism I Front: F. Huber Row 1: (L-R): G. Hinkle, M. Wagner, K. Cox, ]. Champion, J. Mosiniak, J. Reckner, D. It's to put the yearbook together. I doubt that many people realize how much time and energy goes into putting out a yearbook. We spent time selling ads and subscriptions as well as time in class to get all the pages together. The number of pictures taken is tre- mendous. Of course then comes the fun of sorting out the best ones, making up captions, and setting up the pages. We learned to work together to get the pages done. A lot of work is done, but when the Vahalla finally comes out it's well worth it. Our fearless leader, Mr. Tittle. The Vahalla staff would like to thank Mr. Tittle, our advisor, and Mr. Sid Rodeh- effer, our yearbook repre- sentative for all their help. Without them this yearbook would not have been pos- sible. Quit laughing. We can't help it we're wrong again. 128 Staff A Mad Scientist? Cool it, here comes Mr. Hales! Who took this dumb picture of me? 12g Hard at work, Mark? This year the Student Council sponsored many events. They had a swimming party, a skating party and many more, which were a real success. The annual F.T.A. banquet was held this year at Bonanza in Adrian, Mich. May 1, 1974. Mr. Geer was voted as Teacher of the Year by the members of the F. T. A. Whenever a vacancy arises in the grade school facilities, the F.T.A. rushes in to lend a hand for an hour or two by trying their best at teaching and having a little fun at the same time. At the left is the Teacher of the Year. 136 Gymnastics m- Although assemblies this year were few and far between, the ones we did have were really good. Two of our favorite ones were those on gymnastics. For one as- sembly, we were honored to have George Huntziger from Michigan, and the 1970 Olympic Trampoline Champion along with another professional. Between jokes and goofing around, we were treated to an as- tounding display of agility and grace both on the trampoline and on the floor. Not to be outdone, the Junior Senior girls and boys Physical Education classes put on a gymnastics show of their own, just a few months later. Evergreen talent was flaunted as we clapped through a pot- pourri of tumbling, floor exercise, vault- ing, stunts on the parallel bars, and the trampoline. We thoroughly enjoyed both of these shows, and we hope to have more good ones like these in the future. 137 Office Library Help L-R, C. Stubbins, S. Christenson, R. Garlic, Mrs. Kuney, S. Pfund, K. drivers break the busses out of moth balls. During the school year the bus drivers put up with a lot of hassle from some of the kids who ride on their busses. Once in awhile they find some kind kids to give the bus a nice thorough clean- ing up. These bus drivers put in a lot of hours of hard work and a lot of yelling by the kids and they are greatly appre- ciated. Glenn is Gillen Mr. John Rettle Mr. Doug Barnaby School's Out!! 187 CUSTODIANS Mr. Simon On the days we have Sloppy Joes at School a certain lady has a big job. This lady is Mrs. Vanderdonk. She wipes the cafeteria tables after every lunch period. Many thanks should go to her! Mr. Tripp Mrs. Vanderdonk The custodians of the Evergreen School District have a big job. Sometimes the students don't realize or appreciate all the work done. Often kids forget that somebody has to clean off the gum under the desks and the black marks off the floor. These somebodies are the custodians. They deserve a big thanks for a great job and a lot of hard work. Mr. Mrs. Fleming 188 Mr. Mrs. Tuckerman Cooks Our cooks are really something this year. Aside from making our food tasty, they also have a great imagination. This year they came up with a Viking Sandwich which resembles the famous K- Mart submarine sandwich. Many thanks to the cooks for the great job they've done!
