Mardi Gras 1971 r - ' it q O O ABOVE: Bev Herrick, Dennis Ouermeyer, Nina Delau- ter, Sam Victor, Sue Damman, Fred Hassen, Brian Barnaby, Becky Farley. The Mardi Gras is a yearly event of the French Club. Beginning with a carnival, there is everything from a French Cafe to a White Elephant to a Pie-in- the-Eye. The highlight of the evening is the crown- ing of the Mardi Gras Queen from four candidates, one from each class. The 1971 queen was senior Sue Damman with Fred Hassen as her escort. The night ends with an exciting Battle of the Bands. ight Remembered Homecoming is one of the big- gest events of the year, creating a feeling of accomplishment for both the students, faculty and even par- ents. Spirit climbs to unite the school in a common interest. Each class, to meet the require- ments, must design and construct a float following the theme of that year's Homecoming. The 1970 theme was A Viking Pow-wow as the rivals were the Fairview Apaches. The classes had to name their float after a famous movie. The 1970 Homecoming will long be remembered, not only by the attendants but also the whole stu- dent body. lt is an important event for everyone i.n the community. Two are selected from each when the classes vote. Besides the two senior attendants, a third is selected by the Varsity E Club for Queen Candidate. The entrie student body then votes for the Queen from the three cho- sen girls, whose name is not reveal- ed until the moment of the crown- ing. if ...LJ 4? For one night the gym was transformed into an old South- ern mansion complete with pillars at the entrance and a garden full of ponds and fountains. All in all the evening was a pleasant success. Refreshments were served by sophomores dressed as Negro servants. Music was provided by a dance band called The Confederates. At 11330 P. M, the King and Queen were an- nounced. That's hard to believe with all the events the seniors ixii' ' Xwliliiziix took part in during the school year of 1970-71. Bye, Bye Birdie rehearsals, basketball practices and games, football, wrestling, track, cross country, G, A, A, activities, F, H, A, , F, T, A, , etc. , etc. , . . . all kept the seniors busy and explains why a picture of seniors study- ing had to be posed. The following pages catch the seniors while participating in various organizational activities fand just messing around, too.J Due to technical difficulties we regret that there are no pictures of graduation. The Class of 1971 chose light blue and dark blue for the colors of their gowns, and a white rose for the class flower. Finished, yet beginning was their motto. Mr. Nicholos Nyaradi did an excellent job as guest speaker at the Commencement ceremonies. But even if the seniors did have fun all year, every single one, with no exceptions, will agree that the best part was when their names were called on the night of May 23 to go up on the stage to receive their diplomas.
