The annual staff has tried to capture the highlights of the year in a picture form in hopes that in later years those memories will be brought back more vividly. I would especially like to thank Miss Eberdt, our annual advisor, the members of the staff, the faculty and you the students who have all so willingly oo-operat- MJ Jan Seekins Editor ed in making this annual possible. We are at the end of our high school careers, but by far this does not mean we cannot look back on the pleasant memories that we all have shared here. I'm sure that we all will miss each other, but again we must also look forward for new goals to set. I would like to thank the faculty and the Student Council for the help which they have given me. I would like to thank especially you, the Student Body, for making this all-important year a successful one. Sincerely, Q QAJQ. A. S. B. We have received a consider- able amount of recognition because of the smoothness which we have been able to op- erate. Both students and faculty have con- tributed a great deal to this type of organiza- tion. Our school district is growing and changes will be necessary in the immediate future. Students and faculty must be ready to meet this challenge. We must think construct- ively and strive to keep high standards scho- lastically and in our activity program. Wfzgmeizav MAX L. Is it a coincidence that those who consistently complain are really do- ing a poor job in school? Our school is as strong as the individual student. Students become strong by taking part. Do you take part? It is our responsibility to encourage students to become interested in our actvities. The study of students' records would indicate that the active stu- dent is generally doing a good job. Our community has done an excellent job in supplying the physical facil- ities for you. Let's all work to- gether to increase the number of students who are taking part in school activities. By the time you learn all things you have wanted to know on a subject, you have opened up so many interesting side problems, you have to keep on studying. You can train yourself in a skill in a very short time, but often the need of that skill changes. You must then retrain yourself in some other useful skill. Education does more than train one's body--it shows a per- son how he fits into the scheme of life. There is a purpose for everyone in this world. Through education, you can find this purpose and fulfill it, but never think of ed- ucation as being finished at grade school, high school or college. Seek only for a wider knowledge, always. . Let us turn back the pages of history to those bygone days of old when out of a cloud of dust and with a Hi Ho Sil. . . Whoops wrong story--sorry. For a few moments let us reminisce over the past twelve years that have lead to the greatest landmark thus far in our lives, graduation. We shall start our journey with the first time our group attended school, the first grade. This was the golden age when the boys, led by Jerome Salvey, were indulging in that great pastime, shooting marbles. The girls were busy playing Fairy Princess, Cinderella, and the like. with Hazel Munger nearly always being Princess. About the fourth grade the boys started to participate in sports. Half of this was done at Burton Holmes, the other half at Orchards. In 1953 the half at Burton Holmes went to Mill Plain, as 6th graders. At both schools, sports were the important issues for the boys. Dave Hard was outstanding at Orchards and Kenton Allum at Mill Plain. In other activities, Lewis Schatz was Captain of Patrols. One of the teachers at Mill Plain, Miss Carty, filmed two stories during the yearg the Nativity and Robin Hood. In the Nativity, Al Landis was Joseph and Doreen Paradis was Mary. Robin Hood had many stars, Allen Crumpton, Robin Hood, Don Snoen, Sheriff of Nottingham: Bruce Liebman, Friar Tuckg Joyce Grelk, Maid Marian, Francis Scott, Allen-A-Dale, Dick Haynes, Will Scarletg, and many others. Back to Burton Holmes for the seventh grade. Remember the talent show that year? Bruce Liebman played a clarinet solo, Dick Haynes slow motioned wrestled, and Jerry VanFleet, Doug Olson, Rick Harris, and Harvey Varner did a take off on the T.V. program, Dragnet. In the eight grade our class moved again, this time to the brand new Jr. Hi. Everyone thought it was just wonderful, the new lockers, the Luiiforms in P. E. , and the baskets and locks in the P.E, room. Our freshman year was the start of many busy activities. Pep Club was formed with Lyle Paulson as President. We had three girls on the Jr. High Rally Squad, Joyce Uhacz, Judy Leckie, and Gail Vandenberge. The basketball team was outstanding, but the other teams did not fare as well. Going steady became popular, as Lewis Schatz and Jackie Luman led the field. Miss Carty, now a freshman English teacher, presented several plays to the Jr. High this year. This is where Jeff Cartwright's acting career started. Jr. High A.S.B. Officers were President, Marie Heringg Jean Miller, Vice President, Treasurer, Allen Crumptong Dave Inman, Commissioner, and Girls' League and Boys' League presidents were Kay Johnson and Allen Crumpton. We started our sophomore year imder the guidance of our able advisors, Miss Turk, Mr. Tierney, Mr. Axe, Mrs. Woodallg but these were changed slightly as the years rolled by. Our basketball team came in second in the Trico J .V. League. Jr. Class officers were Lyle Paulson, Herb Wainwright, Frank Owings, and Margie Krava. Kav Johnson was chosen Red Cross Representative for the A. S. B. .The class put on a successful Jr. Sr. Prom, the theme of which was Moonlight and Roses. Dave Inman and Bruce Liebman were named next year's football co-captains. Jim McAbee, Joe Kunkle, and Herb Wainwright played varsity basketball and were in the State Tournament. Kenton Allum caught the final out as the Plainsmen won the Trico League Baseball Championship. But the biggest thrill came when the band played for Vice Presi- dent Nixon in Portland. Upon ending our Junior year Dixie Barber was editor of the naner. Then Honor Society was created with Linda Griffith being chosen as President for the coming year. Bruce Liebman went to Boys State, and Karolyn Tyler went to Girls State during the summer. At last after 11 years of hard work most of us became seniors, electing as our class officers, President, Al Landisg Vice President, Marilyn Kroutg Treasurer, . Marian Wirkkala: and Secretary, Jean Miller. Kay Johnson was Girls' League President and Lewis Schatz headed Boys' League. Chosen for A. S, B. Officers were President David Inman: Vice Pres- ident, Lyle Paulson, and Treasurer, Jan Seekins. Karen Bowen was then chosen Queen of the Homecoming and Phyllis Patten, Queen of the Christmas Ball. All of the Seniors look back at their years at Evergreen with fond recollections of our school days. A beachcomber QRon Wardj is alone on a deserted island. One day while making his rounds on the island he discovered a bottle afloat with something in it. Thinking it was an important message, he swam vig- orously out to get the bottle. When returning to shore, he quickly opened the bottle to find it was a report of the graduating class of 1960 from Evergreen High. The message read: Twenty years ago in September 1959, one hundred and sixteen students started their last year of school. Nine months later on May 27, 1960, they all graduated. Today in 1979 they all lead different lives. The Americans finally landed on the moon. The rocket was in the Command of Lyle Paulson who reports The moon lsn't made of green cheese. Along with Lyle was his radio man Phil Hancock and their doctor Kay Johnson. In politics we have Dave Inman who is now the President of the United States, Judy Leckie, Governor of Washington, and Alvy Landis, Speaker of the House. QContempory Problems sure paid off .j Bruce Hoover is now a judge. He has tried such people as Frank Owings, Jim Mattlx, Marilyn Roberts and Ron Bonneau for Bootlegging and Kathy Pearson a.nd Joyce Grelck who tried to rob the David Hard National Bank. If it wasn't for Davids sneaky watchman, Sam Bauman, they would have gotten away with it. There are quite a few that went into show business. We have the new Everly Brothers, Doug Olsen and Harvey Varner, and Joe Lubenow as the Fabulous Flabian. Then there's Margie Krava who joined the circus as an acrobat, of course Jerry Vanfleet is with her, he cares for the elephants. Jeff Cartwright and Larry Alexander have been the two most leading men in Hollywood. Appearing on the Broadway stage is Jo Ann Brackett. The ballet The Graceful Swans will open at Carnegie Hall. .In this ballet are David Bowers, Duane Erickson, and Lewis Schatz. 82 U Have you had a Fuller Brush man around your house lately? Well, Sam Porter is the new salesman for this area. Sam says its amazing to see how many of the girls just ended up being housewives. There are Marla Iverson, Mardell Northrop, Myra Voss, Margaret Johnson, Karen Bowen, Betty Carlson, Pat Thacker, and Nancy Rossiter. Also in the selling business is Dianna Currier who sells Avon Products. Sue Hess now runs the neatest bop joint in town. It is called Slinky Sue's . Every night when the cool- est cat in town fAllen Tiffanyl walks into Slinky's he goes to a small corner where Alice Sherrel is still try- ing to master the art of Bookkeeping. For entertainment Sue has Buddy Dreir playing the bongos while Corrine Ohlinger pounds on the piano. This is the most popular hangout of the beatniks of yesteryear. The cats are Gary Monson, Lee Schmid, Karren Ziebell, Laura Dollarhide, Elsie Wallace, and Rick Harris. In sports we have the four horsemen of UCLA: Bruce Liebman, George Yaw, Allen Crumpton, and Joe Kunkel. Margaret Haagen swam the English Channel, while Jim McAbee went to the Olympics as a track star. Rod Cusie and Wayne Thorpe can be found at the Bonneville Salt Flats racing their Wheatie power- ed go-kart in an attempt to break the worlds land speed record. Speaking of sports, have you ever heard of the women's softball team called the Dilly Phillies? Well, the manager of the team is Jerome Salvey. The players are all graduates of the senior class of 60. They are Peggy Buzzini, Sally Lyons, Annette Mann, Hazel Munger, Carol Streitt, Wanda Pace, Marilyn Pietrsykowksi, Janis Seekins, Deloris Trammell Who's head of the City Sanitary Department? On Saturday afternoon you can still see Tugboat Annie who is now played by Marilyn Krout. We now have the Wirkkala sisters, Margie and Marian who are the stars of the Chevy show. Playing on the Lawrence Welk show is Nancy Martin, Kay Person and Peggy Smith. The new Champagne lady is Linda Griffith. Joyce Uhacz is doing pretty good for herself also. She's the favorite cover girl for the Mad magazine. Speaking of magazines, the photographer fDuane Rosel of the Look Magazine went to South Africa to take pictures of how the people live. Duane said that there were several people he knows, such as Gail Vandenberge who is queen of the Jungle, Danny Baylous head witch doctor and Yvonne King is now the official head shrinker. If you were to walk into the American Tobacco Company you would probably see a cloud of smoke as you walk in. Behind that smoke you would find Big Chief Puff 1Dick Gibsonj who is manager. Under Dick s management is Francis Scott, Vincent Ellithorpe and Maridee Garvey. Working in the Mogen David factory we have Linda Young, Sue Morris, Merritt Richards, and Kenton Allum who crush grapes. While sloshing around in the grapes they sing Kisses Sweeter than Wine . During the different holidays throughout the year, different people portray different characters. If you just happen to be at a New Year's Eve party you might keep your eyes open to see Marie Hering as the Old Year, When Easter rolls around Larry Rice is right there to play the part of the Easter Bunny. Making fire crackers for the fourth of July is Dick Haynes and his two assistants, Judy Boatright and Doreen Paradis, fThey sure have a blast every yearl. Of course, we can't forget good old Santa! Ron Milner sets inas Santa every year at Sears and Roebuck Toyland. It seems like for the past five years Erwin Martell and Don Snoen haven't been able to keep a job. As the two unemployed walk down the railroad tracks, Joe Owens who is now Engineer of the S. P. gl S. railroad, never fails to toot at them as he goes by. The only one left is me and that's not saying much. I'm still trying to write a book. !
