He takes the 5th amendment to begin the largest scandal since Watergate, and of Reagan's pres- idency. January 6 - President Reagan un- dergoes prostrate gland surgery. Jan. 25 - The New York Giants slaughter the Denver Broncos 39-20 in Superbowl XXI. February 7 - Michael Jordan skys to win in the slam dunk contest held in Seattle. Feb. 8 - The West defeats the East in the All-Star NBA game. Tom Chambers of Seattle is chosen the MVP. Feb. 25 - The University of Wash- ington Stadium expansion proiect collasped. March 4 - Reagan addresses the nation, taking responsibility for the Iran arms deal.

April 13 - Jack Nicklaus wins a record sixth Masters tournament, for a total of twenty maiors. He is the oldest Masters champion. Apr. 14 - The USS America battle group withdraws after sending planes on a bombing raid of Libya. Apr. 26 - A nuclear reactor, resembling the one at Han- ford, Washington, at Chernobyl, Russia explodes. Radiation spread over much of the world, and the death toll will not be totaled for many years to come. May 2 - Expo '86 opens in Vancouver. May 12-15 - Two high school hikers are rescued after a savage blizzard on Mount Hood. Seven students and two teachers die. May 25 - Five million Americans ioin hands to raise money for the nation's hungry. July 4 - The Statue of Liberty celebrates its 100th birth- day in a quite spectacular fashion. July 31 - Moonlighting is nominated for 16 Emmys and wins none. ' January 1, 1987 marked a change in our license plates to commemorate the 100th birthday of Washington. v Whitney Houston struts her stuff as her album sells above the 7 million mark. August 31 - An Aeromexico plane crashes into a Los Angeles suburb, af- ter colliding with a private craft. All 67 aboard both planes and 15 on the ground die.
