orlo' Cudosify On November 44, T986 an evenT called Global Reach was held in The small gymna- sium and The library aT Ever- green High School. For five hours speeches, debaTes, and films were given To ex- plain major issues from all over The world. STudenTs were able To ask auesTions and receive answers from boTh The guesTs and Teach- ers. Each period had a dif- ferenT subjecT and differenT guesT speakers, making The fesTiviTies more inTeresTing and useful. During firsT period Bob Ni- chols compared Japan from T956 To T986 in The library. This Teacher from MT. Rainier showed films ThaT com- pared Japan in The 50's To The modern Japan in The 80's. For second period, wasTe disposal and The envi- ronmenT was discussed by Conrad Lee from The Mayors office, Joseph Lowdnes from Greenpeace, and PresTon Horne-brien from The Ideal Paper Recycling Company. Meanwhile, Dick Durall dis- cussed China in The library. During Third period John Carlson, from KIRO, and WalTer Robinson, a professor from The UniversiTy of Wash- ingTon, described Their views on American nuclear policy. During fourTh period MT. Rai- nier sTudenTs discussed Their Trip To Jamaica. And finally, The Pacific Rim Trade was discussed by Linda Solamon, Jeanne Cobb from The WashingTon STaTe of Trade and Economic Develop- menT, and STeve HaTch from The Trade Fair. While This was occuring, Ed HerberT dis- cussed Polynesia in The li- brary. Besides all The speeches There were culTur- al acTiviTies being displayed. During boTh lunches The Ca- ribbean Super STars, a sTeel drum band from The Virgin Islands, played auThenTic music for sTudenTs To enjoy. There were also original and unique dances displayed by Mafa Alafaio during fifTh pe- riod. Gene Mineo and PaTricia Johnson played a very im- porTanT parT in The program. They organized and planned The days evenTs. Mr. Mineo and Mrs. Johnson were noT The only Teachers involved in The Global Reach program. Mr. Durall. Mr. Bunger, and Mr. Lien as- sisTed The guesT speakers and helped answer sTudenT and faculTy auesTions during The acTual speeches. Many faculTy members and sTudenTs helped in The preparaTion of Global Reach. As more people be- came inTeresTed, a need for a new club arose-The Glo- bal Reach club. During The 498614987 school year, The Global Reach club was in The process of becoming an official organizaTion and a permanenT ediTion of E.H.S. BoTh Global Reach day and The new Global Reach club have become very im- porTanT To Evergreen. These Two new programs will con- Tinue To grow and expand wiTh Evergreen High School. Global Reach Day was defi- niTely special. STudenTs be- came aware of conflicTs ThroughouT The world.
