VV: THE KEY The key of education opens the doors which lead to halls of opportunity in future life. Each time an individual advances in knowledge, that knowledge becomes an- other key which opens another door. Educa- tion is a priceless possession for which many strive. The opportunity for education is yours to use in whatever walk of life you may choose. Continue adding to your knowledge that it may open the door on wonder, glory, joy and contentment, peace with yourself and the world. The pages of our Forester, reflect the faces of many students, whose experiences this year are preparing them for the oppor- tunities in future life. ' DEDICATION We dedicate this Forester to Evergreen's first graduating class - the class Of '59. ln 1955 the school first opened its doors as a Junior High. The Freshmen of that year are now Seniors. They have been the upperclassmen for four years. This has presented a challenge which they have accepted. Evergreen and the class of '59 started together and have grown together. Now the dream of this class is complete. Evergreen is a full-fledged high school. They can look back to those first green growing years with honor and pride, remembering the programs and activities in which they took part. The Forester would like to pay tribute to the Seniors of '59 who have so faithfully served their school and set standards for those who are to follow. The administrators, faculty and par- ents play a big part in making our school what it is today. They are al- ways ready to help fulfill the needs of students and take interest in their activities. Evergreen students are for- tunate in having the support of these devoted people. William Beard Principal ADIVI I N ISTRATORS ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO THE CLASS OF '59- lf the record of your years at Evergreen is a prognosticator, we will have cause to be always proud of the first group to be graduated from here - the Class of l959. We can say Good Luck to You g because we know that luck comes to those who have earned it - through hardships and privations you have not hesitated to endurep the long hours you have devoted to study and work, the constructive and cheer- ful spirit you have always maintained. One pound of learning requires ten pounds ot common sense to apply it. You have the learning. We think you have the will to apply it. Good luck to all of you! dA,Z William Beard 8 Delores Garrison Vice Principal i. .4 on 'sr we U K7 Woof S ' P.T.A. Dedicated citizens have devoted much of their time to us. The P.T.A. is a group of parents and teachers which is interested in the program and problems ot Evergreen students. Under this year's able officers, this group did much to further pupil, teacher, and parent relationships. The Highline School Board is faced with ever increasing burdens in this rapidly grow- ing district. School building needs, personnel problems, and tinancial budgeting are only a few. This hard working group richly deserves our gratitude. ,gpm ,if I 1 4 V J . E , he a. 5' mai! A Y A . , iwwiia 0 !'fvQ 5, P' be ,-sr . . 3? I' Hess 5 , ..,. hw: xii. ' K 4 ,,. .1-' 4 , S-, K. Student Council is led by our Student body officers and proiects are planned with the help of representatives. These representatives are sent by each first period class so every student can have his ideas and complaints sent to Student Council. The plans can also be brought back to the students this way. The activities of Student Council include meetings, assemblies, elections, and publicity of school events. The goals which we try to reach are: l. To authorize and control all student organizations within the school. 2. To aid in the development of desirable school spirit and loyalty. 3. To promote better relation and understandings among students. 4. To assume responsibility and experience in self government. Our oFFicers for i958 were President, George Thomas, Vice Presidents, Annette Hamre and Ted Bottorft, Secre- tary, Corlee Campbell, and Treasurer, Pat Morrow. Our new otticers are President, Dan Connelly, Vice Presidents, Susan Leaf and Jim Jean, Secretary, Sharon Carlton, and Treasurer, Kay Crotty. Another activity was an assembly held on October 21, which featured John Fish, cz member of the University of Washington's crewmen, who spoke on his experience in Russia. The Boys' Club also sponsored a fleld day in the spring. It would not have been possible for the Boys' Club to sponsor many activities during the year, if it had not been for the capable leadership of President, Jerry Osman, Vice President, Bill Miltimore, Secretary, Paul McDonald, Treasurer, Bruce Syrstad, and the advisor, Mr. James Dorr. VOICES ECHO IN DEBATE The ability to think clearly, make wise decisions and to influence others by the oral presentation of ideas has played a very im- portant part in the history of this world ever since people began to live and work to- gether in groups and communities. lt is im- possible to imagine a single day in our lives when we are not oltected by the thoughts and arguments of others. Debate students are acquiring poise and the ability to think and speak fluently. The word Debate originally meant to beat, and with the vigilant help of Miss Bryant this squad has learned the art of persuasion. Our debators participated in all Puget Sound League debates for the first time this year. The topic for discussion was Re- solved that the American System of Public Education Be Fundamentally Revised. Our Debate squad took part in all types of speech-making contests this year. They worked hard to attain high honors in the Tournament for Speechmakers at the University of Washington in November 1958, at Seattle Pacific College on January 30 and 31, and at the speech contest held at Pacitic Lutheran College in February, I959. DRAWS IVIANY Through the Letter Girls' Club, many participants have found an outlet for their athletic interests. They learned that sports were not entirely for males only. Sports turnouts were held on a voluntary basis after school each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Activities included trampoline, badminton, volleyball, tumbling, basketball, swimming, bowling, softball, golf, hiking, and skiing. Points were given for attendance and each girl had an opportunity to work tor a letter. lt was the aim of Letter Girls' to promote good sports- manship, create interest in athletics and to offer a va- riety ot sports to those interested. SPORT ENTHUSIASTS Activity-days held at many Puget Sound League schools drew many Wolverine players. Evergreen was host to the schools in February when everyone partic- ipated in the basketball sports day. The officers of Letter Girls' are President - Kay Rock- well, Vice-President - Gerry Fenton, Secretary - Carol Sweet, and Treasurer - Carol Rockwell. GAA and Letter Girls' are under the able advisory of Miss Elliott and Miss Thomson. SPORTS DAY AT EVERGREEN FIRST ROW: J. McNeill, B. Hagerman, D. Johanson, S. Bottger, K. Rockwell, L. Pinto, G. SKI FEVER STRIKES EVERGREEN The bus is coming, grab a seat! - and oft they go to the highest snow peaks during the ski season. What's so fascinating about gliding down a hill on two boards? Mainly, the sheer thrill of speeding down over the clean snow, wind tearing at your face and coming to a halt in a spray of snow at the bottom. The high solitude of the winter mountains, the wis-s-s-s of steel edges Meet Jay and Jim Lucasl ,mi and hickory as you shoot past the blur of trees is a real thrill. All this is provided by Jim and Joy Lucas, owners and instructors, of the EVERGREEN SKI SCHOOL, introduced to our students this year. Four years ago Evergreen was also originated, and the students have always worked to show good sportsmanship. This year Evergreen students were indeed thrilled by the news that they had been chosen from among all the Puget Sound League schools to receive the coveted sportsmanship award. The award is not for skill in athletic ability, not for the numbers of games won or lost, not for the agility or striking costumes of the cheerleaders. It is rather concerned with the attempt of all these groups in a combined single purpose to maintain the high standards of sportsmanship which have been set by the Puget Sound League. 82 FOOTBALL '58 My WOLVERINES ENTER PUGET SOUND LEAGUE The 1958 football season marked the inauguration of the Evergreen Wolverines into the Puget Sound League. The Wolverine eleven man- aged to win only one of nine games, but coaches, sportswriters, and fans throughout the league voiced their respects for the determination and endless spirit the green and white team displayed. Coach Ray Smith predicts a bright future on the Evergreen gridiron because of the tradition of competitive attitude and spirit left behind by the graduating seniors. The following senior boys, Tom Knapp, Mike Knapp, George Pittenger, Jerry Osman, Larry May, Dan McKay, Dick Sims, John Leslie, Dick Sample, Larry Fordham, Gordon Paris, and Mel Oishi, battled for three years the odds of opening a new school. Their display of self sacrifice, hard work, loyalty and team spirit has been an in- spiration that will guide future Wolverine teams.
