Garrett Lt{jg) USNR Isl Lieutenant B. R. Buncc Lt. USN Operations Officer HISTORY OF U.S.S. EVERGLADES AD-24 THE U.S.S. EVERGLADES (AD-24) was named after the Everglades section of Flor- ida. The keel was laid on January 26, 1944 and was launched on January 28, 1945, at the Todd Shipyard, San Pedro, California. Upon completion of outfitting, the EVER- GLADES was assigned to the Pacific Reserve Fleet and inactivated in May 1947. With the advent of the Korean crLsis, she was first commissioned on May 25, 1951 in prepara- tion for accomplishing the mission for which she had been built. After successfully com- pleting Underway Training on August 2, 1951 and several alterations at Long Beach Naval Shipyard, her first extended cruise at sea commenced under the Command of Cap- tain Thomas M. Brown. She left Long Beach qn September 10, 1951 for Norfolk, Virginia, arriving September 27, 1951. Since being assigned Norfolk, Virginia as its home port, the EVERGLADES has com- piled a fine record. Her log book records a scope of operations from New York City to Haiti and from Norfolk to the Eastern shores of the Mediterranean. Her efficiency is ex- emplified by the presentation of the Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet BATTLE EF- FICIENCY PLAQUE in September of 1954. The EVERGLADES has made four Med- iterranean cruises (18 October 1952 to 24 February 1953; 7 February 1955 to 5 July 1955; 11 February 1957 to 4 August 1957 and 10 November 1958 to 8 April 1959) and has performed duties ranging from routine Destroyer Tending to Flagship. After ap- proximately 1 June 1959 her home port will be Charleston, South Carolina. TkOiuiie -••O ' .IX JV ' - ' ■ 4 r X NORFOLK, VIRGINIA 10 NOV. 1958 Oil the morning of the 10th of November 1958 the EVERGLADES cast off from the DesSub- Piers, Norfolk, Mediterranean bound for the fourth time. The pre-departure months had been filled with the Lebanon crisis, administrative and inserve inspections, and preparations for the cruise. The trip across proved to be unusually calm — a distinct contrast to the rough seas and battering experienced in February 1957 on the way over. ■ I« ji ' ,« .a kV. Afc. -  . •Sfc ' ' :? ti ■ ' •.WSii eSE t«E«r TOURS TO PISA- FLORENCE -VENICE Leghorn, or as it is properly named Livorno, is a city of over 100,000 population. It is a naval dockyard and an impoi-tant center of Italian commerce. Nearby is the city of Pisa with its famous Leaning Tower, and within tour distance are Florence, Venice, and Rome. The Army E.xchange at Fort Darby was the .source of several Hi-Fi ' s. In fact. Officer ' s Country began to sound like a Symphony hall. A hurricane passed near the city during our stay, but fortunately, other than a snapped line or two and liberty, but no boats, we were un- harmed. Good weather, being at the pier rather than anchored out, a most favorable ex- change rate plus low prices, and the general use of English added up to an enjoyable port for all. All hands turned out for a ships party — complete with wrestling, boxing, Spanish dancers, and liquid refreshments. ' t ( A busy seaport of Northern Italy — birth- place of CoUimbus. Ski tours to the Alps were of special interest. The MACON was in port with us a few clays, as was the British sub- marine tender HMS FORTH. Passenger liners came and went so often as to be a novelty no longer. Heavy seas and poor weather interfered with boating and ham- pered our destroyer work as well as lib- erty parties. Many took advantage of the one-day tour to see Nice, Monte Carlo, the ancient village of Eze, the perfume fac- tories at Grasse, and Cannes. Others went skiing in the French Alps. The DES MOINES, with Admiral Eck.strom COM- SIXTHFLEET aboard, came to Golfe Juan for a tender availability. Our new Captain, Gilven M. Slonim, assumed com- mand 11 March 1959.
