Jackson died suddenly on September 1, l983, following a heart attack. Senator Jackson was born and raised in Everett. He attended Longfellow Elementary School, North and South Junior High Schools and graduated from Everett High School. After graduation from the University of Washington Law School in 1935 and admittance to the Washington State bar, he established a law practice in Everett. He was elected Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney in 1938 and served for three years before he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1940, where he served for six terms. In 1952 he was elected to the United States Senate. Senator Jackson was in his sixth term as a senator from Washingotn State at the time of his death. He sought the Democratic nomination for president twice, in 1972 and 1976. During his terms in Congress, Senator Jackson became one of the most influential and powerful members of the legislative branch. t During all of his years as an internationally respected leader, Senator Jackson maintained close ties and a lively interest in his home town. His quiet contributions to education in general and to the Everett Public Schools are not well known. Not until after the formal establishment of the scholarship fund was it disclosed that Senator Jackson was the donor of a number of anonymous scholarships for Everett High School students. Senator Jackson was a great leader and a very dear friend to the community he loved so much. He will be greatly missed by all the people of the world, but mostly by the people of his hometown.
