Taking an important part in the revival of the Hifjinx, they appeared in a mob scene on the ship's deck singing nautical novelties The Christmas spirit invaded the music department. and the choir appeared in the Messiah and in the annual Christmas pageant presented by the Everett schools. It was in the latter that they got to display their newly purchased robes which were made available from ticket sales to the Navy Band performance and from donations of civic organizations. This year the choir. in collaboration with the orchestra, put on an Easter concert. and again presented the annual allfcounty spring concert. Members of the choir who attended the Music Educators' bifannual conference in Missoula. Montana. are June Sebbas, Guy Hupe, Gloria Martell, Duane Romo. Verne Peddyf cord, Ronald Robinson and Carolyn Byrd. Miss Ringman accom' panied them on the long jaunt. This musical group. under the direction of Raymond Howell, has appeared in many school assemblies. They have provided music for numerous civic meetings. and they also played an important part in bringing back the Hifjinx, since they furnished the musical background for this popular vaudeville show. This year the orchestra was the musical mainstay of the annual Christmas Nativity Pageant, playing some of the world's greatest sacred music for the enjoyment of an appreciative audi' ence. Easter Sunday the orchestra, along with the choirs, present' ed a sacred concert, which was attended by many Everett citizens as well as students. The Missoula, Montana, music conclave attracted two students from the orchestra: Ray Krebs, violin, and Rex Bienz, violin. Bryce Munger was featured at the piano in Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto in C Minor when the orchestra participated in the annual Spring concert in the auditorium. Nearly the entire orchestra played in the Seattle competition and the Snohomish county music festivals. 'ffslya Q fi ffl N s - N , r . One must have one hundred and ten points to receive a Permanent Torch pin. The student receives awards in the form of OnefBar, TwofBar, ThreefBar and Permanent Torch pins. Officers are elected every year from those memhers having the highest ratings in the society. Officers this year were: Boh Thieme. presidentg Richard Cuttormsen, vice president, and Glenn Gauthier, secretary. The purpose of the cluh is to promote scholar' ship among the students hy giving it a high place on the list of school activities, and also hy Permanent Torch privileges. Anyone may ohtain memhership in this Society provided he has the neeesf sary points. The points are hased on grades received during the previous semester. Fifty points must he earned hy the end of the sophomore year for a TvvofBar pin. At least ten points must he earned each semester or the student is dropped from the society. For a ThreefBar pin, eighty points must he earned hy at least the end of the junior year, and one hundred ten points hy the end of the senior year for a Permanent Torch pin. A crowd of more than 6,000 fans were on hand to cheer Coach jim Ennis and his Blue and Gold team into another season of football at Everett high. The Gulls never disappointed the Everett fans as they won by a close 28 to 25 score. This team was one of the smallest to come out of EHS football history, but that desire to win made them a threat every time they stepped onto the field. Taking on another Puget Sound league team for their second game of the season, the Seagulls won a 20 to 0 victory from the Renton high Indians. All 20 of the Gull points were scored by speed merchant Wes Nelson, a sophomore. Everett was to have been an under' dog in their first Cross State league game with Seattle Prep, but the hard running and aggressive play of the Gulls paid off in a 20 to 0 win over the Panthers. All good things come to an end some time, and so did the Gulls' unbeaten record of three straight come to an end as the Bremerton Wildcats handed them a 7 to 6 defeat. At Wenatchee the following week, the gridders got back on the victory trail with a 27 to 0 rout of the Panthers. Led by halfbacks Carl Roth and Wes Nelson, Everett broke a threefyear jinx by beating visiting Lincoln of Tacoma, 16 to 0. Roth went 35 yards for his touchdown, and Nelson scampered 64 yards with an intercepted pass. Heartbreaker of the season for the home team was the 7 to 0 surprise loss to Bellingham. The Red Raiders were dwelling in the cellar when EHS journeyed up to the Northern city for the contest. The Gulls couldn't get rolling in the sea of mud that confronted them, and as a result Bellingham got the arithmetic that counted in the final quarter when fullback Monti Bianchi carried the ball over from five yards out. Homecoming was properly celebrated with a 26 to 12 win over Walla Walla high. The Blue and Gold finished the season at Tacoma in a Cross State game with the Tigers of Stadium. The Stadium team won 13 to 7, and by doing so copped the league championship. Football A squad. Left to right, back row: Lilja, sq Ayres, Lindblad, McAn' inch, Larson, Boeder, Price. Bland, Dawson. Bob Cummins, captain of the 1940 EHS wonder team. replaced Bob Sherif dan as head hoop mentor when Mr. Sheridan was called back into the US Navy for active duty in Hawaii. Wiiiiiiiig seven and losing only two preseason contests, the Gulls entered the Cross State league as one of the top favorites. The XfState proved to he tough competition, as the Blue and Gold finished third. behind Bremerton and Seattle Prep. with five wins and five losses. Next came the county playoffs. with the Gulls completely waxing the Edmonds high team, 69 to 30, for a berth in the district tourney at Mount Vernon. The applecart spilt all over the countryside as an underdog Mount Baker team laced Everett 45 to 37 in the opening round of action That never stopped the Gulls, however, as they finished third with wins over Bellingham, Snohomish and Lynden for a free trip to the state tournament in Seattle. It was Everett's 21st trip on the state classic. EHS put up a hard fight in the state, but were eliminated after a threefday stay. At the season's close, Earl Bosket, a scrappy senior. was chosen on the AllfCross State first team. He also received second team honors in the district tourney. Don Granberg, another senior. won second team honors for his aggressive ways in Cross State play. Don was voted to the honorable mention team for the district tournaf ment. ART RAMSTAD Track Coach The spiked shoe boys opened the 1951 track season April 6 with a close 62 to 60 win over Sedrof Woolley in a dual meet at the Memorial stadium oval. Stadium high of Tacoma fell before the more experienced Gulls, 87 to 26, in a dual encounter in Everett. The Tigers were able to pick up only one first place. Meeting their strongest competitor of the year. EHS suffered a 631f2 to 59M defeat by Bellingham high at the Raiders' track. The Raiders proved to be the Culls number one opponent as the season progressed. Competing in the annual Northwest Relay Carnival at Sedro Woolley, Everett walked off with four of the nine trophies and 45 points to beat out seventeen other high schools. One record was established by the Gulls in the relay shot put event, Ron Cooley, Dick Guttormsen and Van Morgan combining throws to set the mark at 134 feet 6 inches. For the second consecutive year Everett reigns as Cross State league track champions. The Gulls just barely squeezed by in this one. Two thirds of a point was the difference between runnerup honors or the crown. It was Bellingham who gave EHS the run for the title. Captain Carl Roth again was outstanding in the half mile run. Ron Cooley continued to take first in the shot and discus. Van Morgan, junior, was the team's top high hurdler, as was Gary Sugars, sophomore, top low hurdler. Bob Boushey and Brooks Peterson were high in the pole vault. Wes Nelson ran the 100fyard dash in good time. JACK BENNETT 10 to 6 and 5' to 3. Baseball Coach 6 to 3. The Panthers from up the Snohomish river defeated Everett twice, Opening day of the Cross State found the Bellingham Red Raiders in town for a doubleheader. The Gulls scored early in the first game, but were unable to hold the lead as the Raiders Won 12 to 7. The nightcap was a repeat performance of the first game as EHS crossed the plate for three runs in the second. Bellingham went ahead in the seventh with a trio of runs to win, BASEBALL: The '51 edition of Everett high baseballers was in a lean year as far as being a contending club for the Cross State league crown was concerned. Head mentor jack Bennett, ,flfq ig The hardfhitting Seattle Prep nine handed the Gulls a double loss at the Prep diamond, 12 to 2 and 7 to 2. When we first entered the doors of EHS, the halls looked so barren and the rooms so uninviting, but as we made new friends, upper and lower classmen alike, we realized how truly lucky we were to be a part of such a fine school. The campus with its spacious lawns reached out to greet us. and now after three wonderful years we must say goodbye. No. we're not grieving over the fact that we must leave, for we will be going on into bigger and better things, perhaps college or a chosen career. But whatever we do we'll always remember our school and the teachers- who helped us through so many seemingly difficult subjects. Their guidance and understanding will never be forgotten. We say farewell with sadness in our eyes, for as we look back on all our parties, dances, studies, and countless activities, we can't help but wish we were staying another three years to relive all these happy memories. Yes, these were surely the happiest years of our lives, and we will remember the pleasure, companionship, and fulfillment they brought us. Leading the class of '51 as sophomores were Ron Cooley, presidentg Lenore Lawson, vice president, Elaine Hovde, secref taryg Don Prigg, treasurer. During that year the sophs made a fine showing in the new student vaudeville success, the Seagull Showcase. As juniors the class was led by Barbara Krause, Roland Hublou and Dick Guttormsen, president, vice president, and secretaryftreasurer respectively. The junior Prom was the big' gest event of the year. Elaine Hovde served as chairman and was assisted by Suzanne Solie, Janet Eisenman, Arline Williams, Ron Taylor, Frank Standerfer, Betsy DeCan, Barbara Krause and Margie Nichols, senior adviser. Throughout the year this class was successful in everything they set out to do. They were active in all of our school's sports, dances, service committees, and the Torch Society. Above are senior class officers. Under the leadership of Bruce Peterson fupper leftj the class kept their standards and achievements high. Glenn Gauthier fupper rightj did an ex' cellent job as vice president. He led the senior class over the top in the March of Dimes contest. Serving as secretaryftreasurer, Margart Hultman flower left, did a remarkable job of keeping the books and minutes correct and upftofdate. Serving as adviser of the 197 1 graduating class was Miss Florence Tennyson flower rightl. 68 wi X., 4-LN Becoming juniors, Lyle Roth was chosen president, Jim Cunf ningham vice president, and Conrad Heller secretaryftreasurer. This midfyear class shared honors with the class of '51 in most activities. including the very successful junior Prom. Frank Standerfer fupper right, showed his leadership ability as president of the january graduating class. Assisting him as vice president was joan Chamuler flower leftj and as secretary' treasurer, George Bates flower rightl. Robert Lindemuth fupper leftl was faculty adviser of the class. The SENIOR COMMITTEES pictured at the bottom of these two pages all did a good job at accomplishing their goals. At the far left, on the opposite page, is the CAP AND GOVVN COMMITTEE. Members are, left to right: Bruce Peterson, Jeanette Bartruff and Erank Olson. They took charge of order- ing and distributing caps and gowns for graduation. The SENIOR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE, pictured in the center, had the task of finding a suitable memorial to be left to the school by the graduating class. Left to right. they are Bruce Kennedy, Carol Lee Martin, Dixie Lee Rogers, Margaret Callan and Bryce Munger. The SENIOR SOCIAL COMMITTEE. lower right, took charge of two dances held at Eagles hall. Winding up activities in Everett high were the senior picnic, Campus day, baccalaureate, graduation. and the last activity- the Blue and Gold, traditional dance. Serving as commencement speakers at graduation exercises were three outstanding personalities: Elaine Hovde, Frank Ol- sen and Lenore Lawson, Diplomas were given out, and the traditional song, Remember, closed the doors to the seniors- now alumni. REMEMBER Remember the time we had here, Reember our friends so true, Remember the songs we sang here Of our dear high schoolsthe Gold and Blue. Remember, these days of gladness Cannot come back to you- Remember, when you leave here, Be true to the Gold and Blue: We'll be true to you. 69 DONALD AYRES . . .
