586 1 L ln. G September 7 was a significant day as we eagerly came back to school wearing our summer tans and une expression sophistiquee gained from a summer of varied experiences After swapping yarns with our favorite people noticing that the glass has been removed from doors as an air raid precaution and cutting lust one sunny afternoon for that last dip in the Sound we rolled up the sleves of our new war time 50 wool 50 rayon sweaters and really dug in Before the end of the first six weeks our teachers had a party to welcome n w faculty members where a wonderful time was had by all It seemed funny to go to daylight football games but we found it easier to Con centrate on the plays and we even amazed our friends by knowing the score when it was over We filled out our Torch applications and soon were proudly displaying a new shiny pin with an additional stripe Twas the week before Thanksgiving when gas rationing was no longer a much discussed possibility but became a real curb to joy riding Then it was Thanksgiving and watching the Seagulls win over Salem put us in the mood for turkey dinner Just about now we got our first taste of war on the home front-a practice air raid evacuation. With the realism of actuality sirens screamed and the one com- mand was to leave for home-immediately if not sooner. As most of us needed no coaxing to leave the buildings were cleared quicker than if a mouse was loose in a girls dorm. Then started the Christmas rush-people working down town after school . . A everybody shopping in a mad scramble making a resolution to Do Your Christmas Shopping Early -next year. One morning on our walk to school we noticed the trees were grey and leafless and Old Man Winter whispered warnings of his coming in a cold sharp breath. And come he did with real honest-to-goodness snow, So much in fact that we got an unexpected vacation But the snow soon disappeared and we came back for semester tests and mid-year graduation. ir -.
