Kodak C-et a nose for news is the advice of Miss Esther Johnson, journalism adviser of the Kodak, to all the new students enrolled in her various news classes. Although her advice is sound as well as necessary for the well being of the young journalist, it is rather hard to acquire unless one has a natural ability to put his thoughts into words, say members of her classes Differing very greatly in size, the fall and spring semester staffs of the Kodak worked equally hard to keep up the standards of the paper The enrollment of the first semester News ll class was fifteen, while the second semester group boasted thirty two members It is the duty of the News ll, or more commonly known as the Kodak class, to edit and publish the Kodak every week To many students the prospects of publishing the paper once each week seems very trivial, but what goes on behind the scenes, so to speak, is far from trivial Any galley proofs? Where's the cutroom key? Have you finished making the cuts yet? Hey, someone, get the phone' Where's the sports dummy? Who has that head it was here lust a minute ago I know I had it when I came in No you no savvy but those are lust a few remarks which may b heard around the Kodak room especially near deadline The News I classes spend most of their time learning this journalism lingo and tnat they neednt lump when someone asks for the dummy Causing widespread alarm and confusion was the April fool edition of the Kodak which revealed such amazing facts as the plans for plowing under the campus for a victory garden and remodeling all the classrooms to promote a more peaceful at mosphere for studying Organization of milking classes and the fact that the sum mer vacation would be shortened to one month thus enabling students to have two five months semesters and one month d voted exclusively to tests were also an nounced Perhaps the greatest blow of all was the announcement of the cancella tion of the eagerly awaited Junior Prom due to heating difficulties More than one face was transfigured from a frown to a big smile when it was discovered that thev had been victims of the Kodak staff April foolery This year the Kodak took on a different size due to the fact that by so doing it would help out considerably in the war effort since it is quicker to print and is a more convenient size of paper Contrary to the belief of many students that the n w size cut down reading matter it has been stated that there is no difference in the amount of reading matter in the new Kodak This new form has been adopted bv many high school and college papers during the past year and in addition to beino patriotic the new size is much easier to handle Events of January IO and May I4 were the Neophyte editions cf the Kodak his traditional occasion is the time when the students of the News I classes take over the burden of the press for one week and edit the paper giving it their best in an effort to show up their elders the News ll class Editors managers and re porters are assigned their tasks and the Kodak begins to take form once more with the lseophytes at the controls Excelling in coverage of the news sports page display front page makeup and other good qualities the fi st semester Kodak staff walked cff with the Nationa Scholastic Press Association rating of a first class high school paper Some faithful conscientious and outstanding workers on the staff during the past year were pointed out by Miss Johnson as the fcllwing Shir ex Siexerling Mary Manus Pat Hubbard Shirley Rae Bettx Erickson Alice Earl Barbara bkallcx Bud Haines and Joe Cooper Also deserving a word of praise are the business staffs wh I 'I 1 soliciting the local merchants for advertisments t help supp rt thi. G September 7 was a significant day as we eagerly came back to school wearing our summer tans and une expression sophistiquee gained from a summer of varied experiences After swapping yarns with our favorite people noticing that the glass has been removed from doors as an air raid precaution and cutting lust one sunny afternoon for that last dip in the Sound we rolled up the sleves of our new war time 50 wool 50 rayon sweaters and really dug in Before the end of the first six weeks our teachers had a party to welcome n w faculty members where a wonderful time was had by all It seemed funny to go to daylight football games but we found it easier to Con centrate on the plays and we even amazed our friends by knowing the score when it was over We filled out our Torch applications and soon were proudly displaying a new shiny pin with an additional stripe Twas the week before Thanksgiving when gas rationing was no longer a much discussed possibility but became a real curb to joy riding Then it was Thanksgiving and watching the Seagulls win over Salem put us in the mood for turkey dinner Just about now we got our first taste of war on the home front-a practice air raid evacuation. With the realism of actuality sirens screamed and the one com- mand was to leave for home-immediately if not sooner. As most of us needed no coaxing to leave the buildings were cleared quicker than if a mouse was loose in a girls dorm. Then started the Christmas rush-people working down town after school . . A everybody shopping in a mad scramble making a resolution to Do Your Christmas Shopping Early -next year. One morning on our walk to school we noticed the trees were grey and leafless and Old Man Winter whispered warnings of his coming in a cold sharp breath. And come he did with real honest-to-goodness snow, So much in fact that we got an unexpected vacation But the snow soon disappeared and we came back for semester tests and mid-year graduation. ir -.
