It was a tough season for the Boys Varsity Team with only two returning lettermen: Peter Porcaro (Capt) and John Garron. Having all underclassmen on the team, the year proved to be one to gain experience. Although the record was 0-7 — the boys never quit. They had close scores with Chelsea 32-28, Somerville 31-39 and un- believably Peabody 36-27. The boys showed their determination throughout the season and were in high spirits at the meets. The Girls varsity team though low in number was high with dedication. The team was captained by Deanna Devanna and Christine DeVito. Although ear- ly in the year Devanna had an injury which put her out for the season, Christina DeVito had an excellent sea- son. Also on the girls team, a newcomer. Freshman Kerry Dean, showed promising talent for the upcom- ing years. i Top Row L-R; Rich Allen, Bob Beauchamp, Capt — Deanna Devanna, Coach Minog, Capt — Peter Porcaro, Capt — Christine DeVito, Kerry Dean. In late August 1984-85, the Everett High School field hockey team began what would be a season filled with many highs and lows ending with a 4-9-2 record. Led by head coach Lorraine Sachetta and assistant coach Judy Mulledy, the Everett girls suffered many close defeats before turning things around toward the end of the season. The season highlights began with the spectacular game against Peabody. The Tanners were expecting a easy victory against the Tide but instead faced the much improved Everett girls and played to a 1-1 tie. With this tie the Peabody girls finished their season in second place. Playing with restored enthusiasm, the Everett girls faced off against Arlington High. Arlington came to Everett looking to wrap up 3rd place in the league and a spot in the MIAA Tournement, instead of an easy victory, Arlington suffered a major defeat. Led by a strong offensive line with senior Michelle Mongeon leading the way with the most goals scored in the season and earning a spot on the G.B.L. All Star Team. Michelle proved her worth by playing each game to its fullest using her great ability to hamper the opposing defense. But this season proved that a strong offense is not the only thing to make a field hockey team. Defense can also be a key. This season the Everett defense was led by capt. Kathleen McDonald. A three year letterman, Kay provided the much needed support and leadership ability to carry the team to its grand finale. No team can be complete without a goalie and this year the spot was fi lied by two year, veteran, co-captain Dawn Berardino. Dawn played with the drive and determination needed to handle such a pressure filled position. Other seniors to play this season were first year lettermen Kristen McLaughlin and Jeannie Bertocchi. Although inex- perience can be a problem, these two athletes over- came this to play aggressive and controlled hockey. Here lists the remaining of the varsity field hockey team: Janet Colameta, Michele Garron, Pamela Grif- fin, Maureen Habeeb, Judy Leo, Maureen McDonald, Renee Roberts, Kim Rotondo and Laura Shaw. Fire-n-lce The Everett High School Hockey Team opened a few eyes when they began the season with a 2-2 tie against heavily favored Austin Prep in jamboree Play. The Tide led by Co-Captain Bob DiBiase and Steven Maiuri are presently in first place with a 5-2 record. The team has shown a consistent effort for the excellence. Although not made up of highly skilled players, the team proves the theory that, Hard work pays off. Among those giving their best effort is Dan DiCe- sare, who might be the most improved player on the team, the hard working Bob DiBiase, Tony Ferrante, Kevin Whalen and the Tide ' s offensive defenseman Steven Maiuri. The Team ' s offensive punch is left to the responsibility of Juniors Dave Ravanesi, Steve Sabella, Scott Weldon, and Hugo Arloro; while defensively Anthony DiNatale, Todd Jacobsen, and Rich Vacca, hold down the fort. Sophomore defenseman John Garron, already a two year letter- man, just keeps on improving, as does freshman forward John Jannino and sophomore John Mastrangelo. Other players seeing action are sophomore defenseman John McDonough, Chuck Reppucci, and freshman Derek McCarthy, and Shawn Coyle. Everett ' s netminders are somewhat unique. Because of their strong performance, juniors Phil Imbrescia and Mike Dibattista are rotated every three minutes during the game. This unorthodox practice has been the talk of the league and subsequent sport page guys. The Maiden Evening News featured the goalie flip-flop concept in a special article. If the team ' s offense can mature, then the Tide expects to be competitive during the rest of the season. The league offers the opportunity for any of the teams to qualify because of the close- ness in ability. Defenseman Steve Maiuri has been johnny on the Spot lead- ing the team with six goals, while junior Steve Sabella has three goals and eight assists. Close behind is Bob DiBiase with one goal and seven assists, with Dave Ravanesi hugging the next spot with four goals and three assists. Coach Tom Gibson expects that the season will show Everett ' s youth and inexperience, but will also indicate an anything can happen year. At the time this article was written Everett ' s record stood at 9-3, and the Crimson hoopsters were tied for first place with Medford. The Tide began to roll in December by winning the Watertown Christmas Tournament. The highlight of the tourney was Everett thrilling 59-56 double overtime victory over Wellesley, Senior tri-captain Dennis Conway was named MVP of the tourn ey, while fellow tri-captains Kevin Noonan and Paul Tierney were named to the All Tournament Team. The Tide then entered league play. Tough losses to Medford and Peabody slowed down some of the team ' s early season momen- tum. That quickly changed one cold January night at Somerville High School. It was the last game Everett will ever play in Som- erville ' s Bandvox gym, and for the third straight year the Tide walked out with a win. Soph, guard Bug Fialli hit a twisting lay-up as the buzzer sounded to give Everett a 56-55 Victory. Despite its early success, this year squad is extremely young. Only one senior 6 ' 2 forward Dennis Conway plays for the 1 984- 85 edition of the Crimson Tide. Conway has provided valuable leadership as well consistant play to this youthful team which includes nine sophomores. The remaining players on the team include: juniors Kevin Noonan, Paul Tierney, Chris DeLillo, Steve O ' Connor, Jim Galante and John Boress, Sophomore team Members are Robert ' Bug Fialli, Elidio Amaral, Rob Dascoli, Randy Noe, Archie Caralis, joe Trevisani, Mike LaCourt, joe Cravini and Dave Camp- bell. Play the Game The 1984-85 edition of the Everett High School Girls ' Basketball Team is a young and exciting squad. Captain Kristin McLaughlin leads a team which consists of 4 seniors, 8 juniors, and 1 sophomore. Each of the 4 years over that span, Kristin McLaughlin, Dawn Beradino, Jean Bertoc- chi, and Kay McDonald have made strong contrubutions to the quality of Girls ' Bas- ketball in Everett. Mr. Baldi, who is in his 7th year as Head Coach, is very pleased with the progress made by this years squad. Everett is very competitive with the other teams in the league. The Crimson girls have a good op- portunity to finish in one of the top 3 spots in the G.B.L. In addition, Everett has en- countered teams from the Suburban League, Middlesex League, and Northeast Conference for the first time in the history of the sport at Everett High. The rest of the Everett Team consists of juniors: Michelle Caley, Janet Colemeta, Pamela Griffin, Maureen Habeeb, judy Leo, Maureen McDonald, Pam McGee, and Tina Viglietti and sophomore Kim Rot ondo. Captains John Schena and George Perry along with Seniors Paul Harrington, Roman Agresti, Mark Singleton, Dennis Conway, Tommy Skane and George Skane. The Tide ' s two victories came at the hand ' s of Somerville 14-0 and Revere 9-2. However in these victories, as well as every other game, the Juniors and Sophomores played an important role. Juniors such as Bobby Wallace, Mark Rotondo and Darrin Nicco- li, and Sophomores Jimmy Perroti, Elidio Ameral, and Paul Garcia contributed greatly in these games. Although the team did not have one of their greatest years on the scoreboard, they acted with more unity than ever before. While being hurt by injuries throughout the year, Everett hung tough losing three, one-goal games. While starting sophomores on the varsity team, with a defense made up of three, three-year juniors and an entire mid- field of sophomores, Everett ra 1 1 ied to play tough down the stretch . After an embarassing loss to Chelsea three days before, Everett finally broke into the win column with a 3-0 victory over Quincy. With a team losing only 7 seniors out of 16 players, Everett ' s fortunes can only rise.
