The team ' s record for the season was 0-1 1-1 . But this is merely a record. In many games they played hard, they played well, and they played as a team but they did not win. Winning helps but it isn ' t everything. As members of this team, they should be proud. Soccer is a skill sport, though in addition to skills, one also needs coordination, physical endurance and aggressiveness. This year ' s team was a perfect exampleof a soccer team. They fought and played hard to the last second of every game. In the first game against Maiden, the team really showed what they were made of. It was a cold, night game at Maiden Stadium. EHS has already lost to them in a pre-season game but now the team was ready for them. By the end of the first quarter the score was 1 -0, Maiden ' s lead . In the second quarter, Flavio Leo scored on a break away assisted by Domenic DiMeo. It was now tied 1 -1 . Third quarter came and excellent defensive efforts by John Kozak, Dom DiMeo, Vinny Pacceca, and John Amoroso held them from scoring. The Maiden team scored again on a scramble in front of the net, but that didn ' t stop EHS. In the fourth quarter, Maiden thought they had the win, but in the closing minutes of the game, Flavio Leo scored once again on a corner kick crossed by Chris Lamontagne. Everett held on to the tie thanks to great supportive efforts by juniors John Greeley, and Arthur Durkin. In this game, there were many casuaiities suffered by Everett. Many of the players were hampered by injuries for the rest of the season which set them back. Records don ' t say everything about the team. Even though the EHS soccer team lost its games, it never lost its love for the game. Most of us, when we graduate, will still play whether it be in college or in another league. Top Row: Don Colini, Jim Stork, Chris Lamontagne, John Amoroso, Vinny Pacceca, Sean Casey, and Coach Henry Bejian. Bottom Row: Paul Fabrizio, Arthur Durkin, John Greeley, Flavio Leo, John Kozak, Tony Viglietti, and Domenic DiMeo. 29 I ■Bottom Row: Jim Havey, Don Harney, Lou Minos, Capt. Janice Doherty, Deanna Devanna, Kelly Kanan Back: Coach icufjero HUSTLING HARRIERS Led by Senior AnnMarie Jankowski and Juniors Janice Doherty and Tracy Skane, the Girls ' Cross Country Team achieved a record of 3-4. The team would not have gone as far as it did without its enthusiasm and the dedication of five Freshmen members: Deanna Devanna, Kelly Kanan, Jackie Mason, Karen Crowley and Christine De- Vito. The Everett runners went into the season big under- dogs but surprised everybody by winning three meets in the heavily competitive Greater Boston League. The season was highlighted by the first and most exciting meet against Somerville in Everett. Senior AnnMarie Jankowski crossed the line first in a time of 1 7:1 7 break- ing her old record by six seconds. Janice Doherty and Tracy Skane finished third and fourth respectively. Junior Dottie Minos and Freshman surprise Deanna De- vanna insured a strong ninth and tenth place finish. When the scores were tabulated Everett came out on top 27-28. The team gave their ail the whole season long thanks to the enthusiasm and perseverance of Coach Ed Ricupero. The Boy ' s Varsity Cross Country Team had a dis- appointing season finishing with a 2 and 5 record. However this record is deceiving having lost two of the meets by only three and four points. The first meet was against Somerville at Glendale Park. Pat Green took third, Dan Reeves fifth and Jim Reynolds sixth place. Seventh and eighth were taken by Dave Devanna and Louie Minos result — Somerville 25 — Everett 26. The team did make a commendable performance at the 1 5th Annual Road Race held at the Saugus V.F.W.. For the 3rd year in a row Everett won this race. The representing Varsity Team consisted of Pat Green, Dan Reeves, Dave Devanna and two Freshmen Tom Skane and Jim Havey. Pat Green finished first; Dan Reeves third and Tom Skane seventh. Jim Havey finished eleventh and Dave Devanna fifteenth. All five were again rewarded with team trophies for winning the three mile race. Jim McGlauglin won a medal for eighteenth place. THE ICE MACHINE Everett High Ix-gan the hockey season wilh .1 fine group of returning lettermen, many of whom were Mill sophomores or juniors. Coach Gibson starting with sugar plums dancing in his eyes as he saw tourney possibilities for the first time in eleven years on the horizon. These hopes were soon dashed, and at the time of this writing, Everett skaters stood at 6-6, with tourney possibilities put over until next season ... At the beginning of the season the ■Crimson skaters were hit with successive injuries that put a crimp in what was a successful start, l ust line svmg, Mike Castano, broke a foot; Steve DeLuccia, fractured a shoulder; starting defensemen Lou Mauiri, npi ed muscle in the leg, and junior Jim Maclaughlin missed two games wilh a leg injury. Undermanned, the T ide almost pulled off upsets over Somerville and Arlington who were running one two in GBL competition. Lady Luck deserted her beaus and saw a questionable score by Somerville at the buzzer beat Everett, after a fine effort. If that wasn't bad enough it took Arlington to three minutes in the last period to win on a scramble in front of the net tobeat the hustling young Everett club. Victories over Revere, Peabody (twice)i Chelsea (twice) and Medford left Everett at this writing tied with Malden for third place. Goalie Paul1 abrizio has two shutouts and has been the mainstay of the Everett line of defense along with Senior Paul Vertullo and Lou Maiuri and lohn DeCregorio. Coming alone nicely to help out on defense- was Frank McCormack. Scorers and up front skaters that thrilled the fans on mori |han one occasion were Roal potters Mark LeDonne. Pat Carli, Jim Mat I auRhlin, Sean Casey and full game huMler. L).J, t tamngton. Also contributing to the cause and filling in with desire and hustle were Marc Fronduto, Tommy Anderson. Scott DeLuccia, Peter Maggio, Paul Maiuri and Paul Smith. Mike Scurto did yeoman's work playing every game and giving the club back and forecbecking, the name of the game. Seniors Vertullo, L. Maiuri, Carli, Scurto and goalie Fabrizio will be sorely missed from next year's roster. Goalie Fabrizio was classed by no less than perennial winning coach, Eddie Burns, of Arlington, as the best in the League. Coaches Tom Gibson and Herb Lawrence are plcashd with the attitude and hustle of the dub and will look forward to next year for an injury free seasond pec ial kudos go to former assistant coach Norm Jordan, who volunteered bis servicesnnd wa seen at every game helping out. Finally, as if not having your own home ice is not enough, The Ost Boston M.D.C. rink, which was to be Everett's home game, ran a foul of leaks and breaks and was put out of commission for the season. The Everett club had to sc ramble for ioe, its fans traveled to the newly renovated Arena, in Boston, the Stoneham Rink, and for a change, even played a few games at the Everett Rink, very handy for the fans, but, built to seat just the players. lop Row Coach Thom Gijton, Marl IcDonnc, |ohn DrCregono. The season opened on an impressive note w ith a 55-36 victory over altlTam, a team the Crii- son h.id never beaten. After jumping out to a 21-8 first period ' lead, the Crimson were never seriously challenged by Waltham. Sconnt; was v%ell baianc ed am n Bucchiere, jackie Boudreau, Kathrx n McLaughlin, and Ruthie Boudreau. - The next tliree games against Peabodv Revere and Lynn Classical resulted in 1 win and o es, Everett visited a powerful Peabody Team and suffered its first lose of the season 74-40. Peabody ' s phenominal shooting was the undoing of the Tide. DeJ|W||thp one-sided score, the Cximson, displayed aggressiveness and hard work throughout the contest. Everett climbed back on the winning track with a 43-33 £lory over Revere. Kat Kisich and Jackie Boudreau lead the Crimson offensewhile Kathryn McLaughlin and Sharyn Bucchiere anchored the defensive efforts. Duftng the Christmas vacation, the team ' s nscord fell to 2 wins 2 losses as Lynn Classical bested the Tide 47-33. Sharyn Bucchiere, Kat Kisich and Ruthie Boudre.m leald the Crimson attack that fell shortjn a game that was closer than the score indicates. 18 isa REACHING HIGH PLACES The 1981-82 Crimson Basketball souad is led by senior Co. Captain's Michael Shcehen and Shawn Patton. Patton is one of Fverrft's most proficient scoters and Sheehen is the teams defensive specialist. Other contributing seniors include Paul DiCato, Donald Golini, Rocky Leo, Anthony Sabella, and Robert Sansone. Due to the efforts of these senior student-athletes, Everett is off to one of it's best starts in history. (9-2) Juniors on this years team include Paul Barry, Peter Chiarello, Paul Donatio, Mark Fialli, Scott Noonan, Steven Pendenza, Ray Spinney, and Ed Zanoc. ‘THE CRIMSON EXPRESS This vears Crimson Tide bad much talent and showed a lot of promise and although they came up short of a GBL championship, they restored football pride 1 K Everett as it was seen when the Old Everett Greats were playing. Capt. Steve Valeri, with a very good season, had plenty ' of opportunity to show off his throwing ability, though don ' t sell him short as a defensive safety. Steve provided man a touchdown saving tackle. Valen had a lot to work with in senior end John Baniewicz, pulling in several spectacular catches. John ' s defensive :- ertormances at the end position also gained him recognition from home and away fans. David Stewart, senior halfback, was a key to this years Tide attack. Dave Kis quick and explosive and had his share of touchdowns and interceptions. The Crimson backfield was jamful of talent in Andy Hickey, John Soule, )im Rednrond jUMjohn Fitzerald, who also did a greatjob kicking the ball for the tide. Nick Russo, Giro luliano, and Dan Risteen were Everett ' s senior linemen. This steel curtain led countless offensive drives and defensive strongholds. Safety Mike Sheehan was seen off the receiving end of several interceptions thoughout the season. After non-league losses to Leominster and Beverly, the Tide came to life in the GBL. A Division 1 ranked Peabody was stunned by the tide in their home opener where Peabod barelv squeezed out a 22-22 tie. Everett preceeded to defeat Somerville, Ariingtcp, and Revere and hopes of a GBL title were present. Medford wa coming to town and v% hat should ha ebeen the battle of the century, didn ' t prove to be much  a game. The Mustangs scored on the first few ticks of the clock and It was all down hill for the Tide from thereon. Capt Valeri was injured with a fractured thumbJn this game. The disgusted Everett Squad went to Maiden and lost. Now all Everett ' s championship title hopes were disirHegrated. Chelsea was left for Thanksgiving day and the Tide was hungry for a win. Dave Stewart scored first for Everett on a 3 yard run, but that wasn ' t the last heard from Dave. On the Crimson ' s next possession, Stewart broke out of the backfield and raced into the endzone for a 44 yard run, hissecond touchdown of 3 for the day. Stewart ' s 3rdT.D. was from the Chelsea five yard line, where he barreled into the endzone. John Fitzgerald, at the quarterback pc Jion, played great with a 15 T.D. run. Everett ' s defense had 6 sacks and containing the Red Devil passing game. These vital donations have been raised through car washes, bowlathons and candy sales. The Key Club is composed of dedicated and industrious members who are supervised by Zack Stratis — Pres, Michele Forrestall — Vice Pres, Jane Shepard — Secretary, Paul Martignetti — treas. Adult advisers include Anthony Malione and John Foresteire of the EHS Guidance Department and Bruce Mack- ey of the Kiwanis. As a result of this action the number of registered members ex- ceeded eighty pupils, making the internation- al club one of the largest organizations at EHS. Mr. Marino, the club adviser, did an excellent job in handling this rather large group. The dedication and tolerance with which he handled the club helped to make the club a successful one. Elections were held at the beginning of the school year and the officers elected were Flavio Leo — Pres, Vin- ny Pacecca — VP, Darlene Tuck — Treas, and John Kozak — secretary. Money was raised in various fund raisers held throughout the school year which enabled the club to begin an annual scholarship. The Internation- al Club made visits to the Appleton Nursing Home and performed other social functions, and a traditional banquet was held at the end of the school year. A sound foundation was built by this years members to insure the fu- ture growth of the club. PARKING i o uJ CO o 61 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Isl row: (Advisor) ). He attended the Centre School and then went on to the Parlin Junior High where he wrote the Character many times. Following his years at Parlin he attended Everett High and graduated in the early 1950 ' s. Mr. Barile entered Northeastern Uni- versity in 1 956 and the following year transferred to Suffolk University. While in college, he was very active in extracurricular activ ities. He was a member of the yearbook Staff and Vice President of the Business Club. In 1 960, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and procured a Master of Education degree at Salem State College in 1963. Mr. Barile began to teach under contract on Oct. 10, 1960 and is now in his 22nd year. Throughout his teaching years he gained the respect and admiration of his superiors resulting in his election to Head of the Social Studies Department at EHS in 1971 . When asked about his out of school interests, he simply responded my family . His physical activities focus on Tennis, ice skating, and golf and bowling in which he considers himself better than average. He is also a retired basketball player. His hobbies include reading, backgammon and a keen interest in politics. Mr. Barile is also a well-known trivia expert at EHS. When asked what he thought was the most important quality of a teacher, he re- sponded total dedication to the profession. He truly believes this and demonstrates it through his classes and his rapport with his students. Mr. Barile holds great respect for the class of 1982. Finally he advises all seniors Be good, be best, be better than all the rest. Top row: Robert Barile — Department Head 2nd row: Tom Maddox, Louis Baldi Bottom row: lames Peddle, )ohn Dolan, Ann Tobin HEALTH SCIENCE r i Nancy LaRaia, a life long resident of Everett attended Northeastern Uni- versity as an undergraduate and the University of Maine as a graduate stu- dent. Being an educator for seven years, Miss LaRaia feels that the most important quality of a teacher is keep- ing a sense of humor in the class- room. She became a teacher as a fulfillment of a life ' s ambition. Peda- gogy was her desire since Jr. High School. Some of Miss LaRaia ' s outside in- terests include classical ballet, jazz and modeling. She started dancing at the age of ten. During her pre-teen and teenager years, she studied with Eleanor Rubino. As an adult. Miss LaRaia either studied or took semes- ter courses at such places as Gene- vieve Studio, Joy of Movement and the Silhoutte Dance Studio. In her modeling pursuit. Miss LaRaia was affiliated with Jaya School of Model- ing. She can also be seen doing var- ious shows for radio station WXKS at local nightclubs. Her advice to the class of 1982 is Many people go through their adult lives regretting their pasts — preaching about things they could nave done or should have done. Live your life in such a manner that you will never have to regret not doing the things you really wanted to do. Let your could have done ' s become have done ' s. During World War II, he was in the United States Navy for four years and served twenty-eight years in the Naval Reserve. Uncle Al , as he is known to the Seniors, is now pursuing his childhood ambition of teaching Physical Education. He has been teaching for thirty-six years; twenty-two here at Everett High School. Having accepted the challenge of teaching he believes a teacher has to accept the work to be. done and do it! Mr. Marshall ' s philosophy is, Everyone is a teacher and you can learn from others if you will take the time and listen. In his spare time, Mr. Marshall likes the outdoors especially snowmobiling, and hiking. He also likes to travel to historical sites around the United States. To the seniors of 1 982: I hope everyone will learn to accept disappointments and adjust to them. Never stop pushing forward!
