The Whisperers shrill back and forth across- -the rows of desks You can ' t sleep You listen to the noises of monotony pencils scratching fingers drumming pages idly turning pens tapping. . . You watch the clouds move or stare at the ripples of heat rising from the radiators past the open windows. Your eyes feel heavy and your lead -weighted feet ache to be barefoot and pounding against the packed sands of a hot windy beach. Outside, a truck roars past and everything vibrates for a brief instant Floors, desks, students — everything comes wavering to life and nods back into death You glance at the clock on the front wall and sigh. Paul Mangan- aro was killed in an automobile accident at the peak of his football career. PAUL PIETRANTONIO earned the trophy as this year ' s outstanding lineman. He played a tremendous game at middle linebacker and led the Everett defense in tackles and helped stifle the powerful Medford offense. 106 The Jeffrey Jeweler ' s Award is given each year to the out- standing Everett football player for his achievements on the field. The entire student body at Everett High votes for the player they think deserves this honor. This year ' s recipient was Frank Nuzzo. This is the second time that Frank has received this award and he is the only player in Everett ' s history to receive this award twice. 107 James Penta At this time, we would like to give special re- cognition to Jimmy Penta. In his twelve years of school Jimmy never missed a day. GOOD WORK JIM! Dennis Ayiward This year ' s HARVARD BOOK AWARD was pre- sented to Dennis Ayiward. Dennis received this award because of his outstanding physical and scholastic abilities. I 16 FOOTBALL The Crimson Tide of Everett led by Cap- tain Vin Sabella had another fine season win- ning the G. B. L. for the second year in a row. At the beginning of the season the team sput- tered on offense but excelled on defense. They dropped their opener to Newton by the score of 7-0 and the second game against Somer- ville was more of the same. The only score came on the opening kickoff in the second half by the Somerville safety. Everett ' s defense showed signs of life during the game, but the offense failed to bring the ball over the goal line. The next week Everett traveled to Quincy for the third game where Everett ' s offense finally exploded. Paced by Frank Nuzzo ' s three touchdowns, Everett trounced Quincy 32-6. This game set the trend that Everett was to follow the rest of the season. The Crimson Tide played their third interleague game with Revere, and Revere was held scoreless by the best defensive unit in the G. B. L. , the game ' s only score was on a spectacular 35 yard pass from Nick Fiandaca to junior Kevin Washington. The de- fense added two more points as Vin Sabella and Paul Pietrantonio sacked a Revere running back in the end zone for a safety. Final score: Everett 8 Revere 0. On October 21 Everett High invaded Hor- mel Stadium for a battle with the undefeated Medford Mustangs. The lone score came on a fabulous 103 yard interception run by Frank Nuzzo as both defenses refused to yield. Eve- rett became a top contender for first place in the G. B. L. winning this game by a score of 6-0. In this game Paul Pietrantonio was award- ed the Paul Manganaro Trophy as the out- standing lineman in the Everett -Medford game. The fifth game was against an overrated North Quincy team. It was one of Everett ' s best days as they went through the first half without a penalty. The two touchdowns were scored by Frank Nuzzo on runs of 53 and 4 yards. With the game ending 14-0. It was Everett ' s third shutout in a row. The second non -league game was against Beverly, who hadn ' t won a game all year. The offense drove for two touchdowns; one each by Nuzzo and Fiandaca. The game was high- lighted by big defensive end Jim Penta who picked up a block punt and scrambled for a touchdown, adding six more points for the de- fense. All three conversions made the score 24-0 in Everett ' s favor. This game put the Crimson in undisputed first place. The eighth game was a touchdown fest against Maiden. Practically everyone that touched the ball scored, as the Tide rolled up a score of 50-7. Turkey Day brought Everett ' s final game against rival Chelsea. Frank Russo, recover- ing from a back injury, set the pace for an Everett win as he literally ran over the Chel- sea defense. The Crimson ' s defense held Chelsea to eight points as they wrapped up the season with a 34-8 win. We wish to congratulate the Crimson Tide Team of ' 72 - ' 73 and coaches Mr. Moody Sarno, Mr. Bob Marques, Mr. Richie Green, Mr. John Di Biaso, and Mr. Tony Sarno for an outstanding season. by JOHN RONAN, Sports Editor 117 119 1?0 121 1?? The Everett High Hockey team led by Co -captains Kevin Barry and Paul Dimi- truk were ready for another season. This year ' s team was young and inexperi- enced. Though the team battled every game they lacked the scoring punch they needed to be a winner. The defense held the opposition ' s offense down by boasting a 2. 85 goals against average. The season was high-lighted by two sensational games against first-place Maiden and second-place Medford. In the game against Maiden the Tide outskated and outchecked the G. B. L. champs for three periods, but on a defensive lapse with less than a minute left in the game Maiden ' s forward, Matt Mardin tied the score at 2-2. The second game was an example of outstanding goal tending by senior net minder, Ed Gianantonio as he kept coming up with the big save to keep Medford off the scoreboard. The lone goal of the game was scored by sophomore forward Rick Schuman. Co-Captain Kevin Barry received a starting berth on the G. B. L. All -Star Team. Ed Gianantonio received honorable mention. NOT PRESENT, Bob Liberman. Basketball 1972 — 1973 The Crimson Tide of Everett looked forward to another season of basketball with re- turning lettermen Co-Captain Jim Penta, Co- Captain John Ronan, and Arnie Heavey leading the way. This year ' s club played an aggressive man to man defense coupled with a fast-break offense. The offense was triggered by senior forward Jim Penta and junior center Kevin Washing- ton ' s boardwork and Arnie Heavey ' s shooting. The defensive bulk fell on juniors Mike Marchese, Kevin Giannantonio and seniors John Ronan and John Pesella. The team ' s hope for a Tech berth was shattered when three one-point losses in a row went to Revere, North Quincy, and Somerville. Coach Vic Pisacreta tried to rally his troops, but teams like Medford and Arlington were too strong. The Tide ended up with a record of 9-9 and fourth place in the Greater Boston League with a league record of 7-7. Class History On September 7, 1960, some thir- teen years ago the CLASS OF 1973, our class, began its lengthy struggle toward graduation. On that day we entered our neighborhood elementary schools, the boys in their white shirts and bow ties, the girls in their little starched dresses - - all of u s accompanied by our proud but apprehensive mothers. I doubt if any of our parents could envision that thirteen years later we would be walking around the Everett High School wearing worn jeans, working shirts, and boots. Our boys wearing their hair the length of some of the girls and hardly a white shirt in view, to say nothing about sporting a tie. The girls doing their level best to look utterly gross. Those first seven years quickly passed, leaving us to acquire junior high status. No longer did we attend the many elementary schools. We were now divid- ed into four larger groups and housed in four schools, namely the Center, Evans, Lincoln, and Parlin. Now we knew that graduation d ay was a feasible goal, we had made it half-way. By September 1968 we had met almost every member of the CLASS of 1973. At the Parlin we were permitted to join the various clubs- -De b a ting, Dramatic, Glee, Band, etc. We were allowed to compete in organized sports and our decisionmaking abilities were beginning to be recognized. We thought long and hard on what our futures were to be. When Mrs. Wallace, our music teacher, died unexpectedly, death sud- denly began to have meaning for us. Next year Carol Barber, a well-loved class- mate died of cancer and we abruptly realized the finality of death and how alive and fortunate we all were. Our year in the ninth grade was quite different from a traditional freshman year as we were not in a school with students who were eighteen years of age just waiting to step into the adult world, but we were the oldest. Names like Frank Nuzzo, Frank Russo, Vin Sabella, John Ronan, Kevin, Barry, Paul Dimitrick, Jim Penta, Arnie Heavey, and many, many more were etched into our minds because of the sport teams at the Parlin. Four years later these are the names that come to mind when we think of football, basket- ball, hockey, track, and baseball. Parlin graduation was an unforgetta- ble affair for all of us. Various students received special awards for scholarship, fidelity, debating, and oratory. Many of us received the Parlin P and we were happy to note that most of those students went on to become members of the Na- tional Honor Society. We used our sophomore year well. We all matured physically, develope d our personalities, and worked hard to improve our minds. Our class leaders began to blossom. President Frank Russo and Vice-Presi- 198 dent Kevin Barry emerged to hold our class together over the next three years. We were fortunate in our strong repre- sentation on the student council. In our last year we even had repre- sentation on the School Board. WE had reached the ULTIMATE. If nothing else our class had spirit. Remember all the new-school assem- blies, the marches on City Hall, etc.? Who could ever forget the ping-pong games that were played using the dress code as a ball? During our time we even saw the school cafeteria improve. What other graduating class in Everett High ' s recent past can boast of having tables and seats for luncheon? Our clubs were strong. The Anti- Environmental Pollution Club became deeply rooted. At the Science Fair the Committee ' s exhibits educating the pub- lic on the effects of pollution on ecology were notable. The Spanish Club was one of our most active organizations. During our time at Everett High the club expanded its Good Neighbor Policy to include visits to pa- tients in the local nursing homes. At Christmas and Easter time parties were givenfor those elder citizens. Each year a Christmas party was given to the local S pani s h -speaking children. The club provided a scholarship for a deserving college -bound member at graduation. The Dramatic Club ' s productions were well -worth attending. THE ME NOBODY KNOWS was a first-ever musical presented during our senior year. Needless to say it was a smashing success both i n performance and box office. The French Club, Future Teachers of America and the School Newspaper re-entered the scene during our time. Our Band, Majorettes, and Cheer- leaders were super, the result of their persistent and dedicated work. Both our Junior and Senior Proms were memorable events. Our commit- tees worked long and hard. The Junior Prom was held at Tremont Villa and The Sydney Hill Country Club in Brookline. The yearbook staff did a f i ne job to produce one of the finest yearbooks in the school ' s history. It ' s been a good thirteen years. Of- ten it was fun time, but more often it was work time. Our school nurse, Mrs. Rita Keefe, R.N. died early in our senior year. Many students loved her as a r e a 1 true and under standing friend and her untime- ly passing was a sorrowful time for us all. Well the future is ours. Hopefully, our past thirteen years are only a pre- lude to a bright future. It was a time we can never relive, except in our memor- ies. But who can afford to waste time on the past when there areso many days and new experiences awaiting to chal- lenge us. ANDREA GROUT Historian. 199 True friendship will never come undone.
