Tri-Captains Moore, Masiello, and Lucci would prove to be shining examples of willingness and determination in leading our stalwarts. We opened the season against old rival Newton and ran into troubles all afternoon. It is seldom that an Everett team fails to score, but this was one of those days. Our defense fell apart and our offensive line was outsmarted and outplayed by a smaller and more agile group. Despite our loss there were bright spots in the performance of our undergraduate backs in the persons of Saia, Nuzzo, and Romboli. Nice things could be expected later on. We bounced back with a win the following week against a fair Somenille team. Moore demonstrated his passing ability by tossing a pair of touchdown passes to Nuzzo and RomboH. Capra scored the points after on a rush. Our defense did a complete about face as they held the Somenille ground attaclc to a minus and constantly had their quarter back running for his life with a great pass rush. A powerful Quincy team poured it to us the f)llowing week. Our pass defense was constantly left flat-footed as they scored twice through the air. A sixty-five yard run and a gift via the fumble gave them their other opportunities. Bill Foley put us in the scoring column on a run. 4 ■4 The Big Red rose up against Revere and took home the Centennial Day Celebration prize. Revere took an early lead but then we went into high gear. Roinholi had a great day as he scored on a ninety-one yard run, a pass completion, and had four conversion points. Even the score did not show completely our domination. We stayed on the victory path as we downed the Medford Mustang in our next outing. Our defense came to the fore as Jagiello blocked two punts and recovered one for a score. RornboU intercepted a pass and ran it in for a touchdown. Later Nuzzo ran for a score and Romboli finished it off with another touchdown run. John Carpenito received the award for being the outstanding lineman of the day. Against North Quincy our offense was great but again our defense fell apart. We dropped this one in a nip and tuck battle by four touchdowns to three. Nuzzo was our shining light with two runs for scores while Jagiello intercepted a pass and scooted in for the other score. Our game with Beverly proved to be a high scoring game, but a good one even though we were o)i the losing end. Tlie Tide took an early two touchdown lead on the great running of Nuzzo. The end of the half saw us sitting on this lead. Then the Panthers put together a great third period and not only caught us but forged ahead. Moore plunged over later to tie it up. but all was in vain. Beverly took the ball and with time running out managed to score and salt the game away. For the first time since 1960 Maiden beat us in our own back yard. We fell behind in the first half by two touchdowns. We came out at the start of the second half ready to beat the world. In a space of less than three minutes we roared back and on the running of Foley, Nuzzo, and Romboli we tied up the game. Then we lost our cool as the Golden Tornadoe passed and ran for the tiebreaker and a win for them. We satisfied our Thanksgiving appetite with a great win over our arch-rival Chelsea. The Red Devils were enjoying their best season in years but they proved to be no match for the Crimson Tide. Nuzzo ran roughshod over them on two great runs for scores. In addition to this he had two scores recalled on penalties after two other great runs. To all our Seniors we wish them great luck and success in their game of life. It was hoped that the loss of seniors would not prove to be too great a hinderance, but this was what proved to be the greatest handicap. The team opened the season against a good Medford team and had bad first and third periods. This was the difference as we played them better than even for the other two. Keegan was high scorer with nineteen points in our 75 to 63 loss. The return game with the Mustangs saw us hold a first half lead and then fall apart in the third quarter. We were unable to come from behind and thus we dropped this one by a 71 to 65 margin. Keegan was tops again with twenty-one points followed by McLaughlin with twelve. Against Watertown we fell flat on our faces for three periods and couldn ' t buy a basket. We found ourselves in the final quarter but all too late. Despite our surge of thirty-three points we were beaten by an 80 to 71 count. Keegan with nineteen points and McLaughlin with sixteen did yeoman work for the Crimson. Quincy bombed us from the opening whistle and lead by fourteen points at the half. We held on for the second half but wound up on the short end of an 88 to 72 score. Anzalone proved to be high scorer with sixteen points. The turnabout game with the Presidents was a repetition of the first game. Lack of height was killing us. They coasted home with a 93 to 74 win. McLaughlin dropped in twenty-five big points followed by Driscoll with seventeen. Against Lowell it was nip-and-tuck all the way. The first half was a stalemate at twenty-seven all. We outscored them by two points in the third quarter and this proved to be the difference as the final whistle blew to give us a 61 to 59 win. Keegan, Alston, Anzalone, and McLaughlin were in the double figures. The return battle with Lowell was almost a •■m mm WKf — 1 repeat performance except that they lead by eight big points at the half. We found the range in the third period and evened up the scores and roared on to win by another two-point margin 71 to 69. Anzalone had a good night with twenty-one points while Keegan, Heavey and McLaughlin all were in double figures. Revere outscored us in all but one period as everything we threw up went awry. The final spread of sixteen points was not representative of our efforts in our 86 to 70 loss. Keegan was our mainstay with twenty-nine points followed by McLaughlin with fifteen. The Beach City boys really bombed us in our meeting. It wasn ' t until the final period that we showed any life and then it was too late as was shown in the final 91 to 69 score. Anzalone managed to garner twenty points. North Quincy dominated the boards all night and showed us no mercy. We failed to be in the ball game from the start. Each quarter saw us fall behind slowly but surely as they romped to an 82 to 50 victory. Keegan managed to get twenty-two points and McLaughlin fourteen. Tlie return bout with North was a complete turnabout. We played them tight and ran them all over the floor for three quarters and held on to a six-point lead. We slowed in the final stanza but held on to win a great victory by 63 to 61. Keegan, Penta, Anzalone, and McLaughlin were all in double figures. Everett and Maiden has always been a great rivalry in any sport and this was to be no exception. We went from a two-point first quarter lead to a three-point spread at the half in a ding-dong battle. In the second fialf we played consistently and continued to forge ahead and emerge on the long end of a 60 to 53 score. Our return engagement with the Tornadoes was a repeat performance of our first game with only a couple of points separating us up to mid-way in the final stanza when we dropped in a series of baskets to win by 61 to 52. Keegan popped in twenty-four points. Somerville was the team to beat in the league and we tried hard. We played them even in the first period but fell behind by six points at the half. We kept at them during the third quarter but the final period saw us fade as they banged out a 72 to 56 win. Keegan, Anzalone, and Driscoll were in double figures. We opened strong against them in the return go and jumped off to a ten-point lead at the first rest period. They cut our lead down slowly but surely. We fell apart in the final quarter and they trotted home with a 70 to 59 win. Keegan and McLaughlin had eighteen and nineteen points respectively. Chelsea proved to be no great trouble to the Tide as we dominated the game from the start. We led at the half by eleven points and preceeded to turn it on in the last half to coast to an 82 to 48 win. Again it was Keegan with twenty-three points and Anzalone and McLaughlin both in double figures. The Red Devils scared us to death in our deciding game. The first half was a repetition of our first game and we went into the final period with a fifteen point lead. They outscored us by fourteen points in this period and we were lucky to survive by a score of 86 to 85. The season was far from a winning one but we did have a chance to spend the long cold winter nights in cheering whether we won or lost. All of these good times are a part of our memories. Thanks to all the players who did their best and gave so fully of their efforts. Good luck and may you all score many baskets in your persuit of happiness in life. The Season After the championship season of last year, things looked bleak for Coach Mulloy as he greeted but one returning letterman. There was a nucleus of inexperienced material and hopes were alive for a representative team. We opened against favored Maiden and managed to outplay and outshoot them all night only to settle for 1 to 1 tie on a solo goal by Jim English. Quincy nosed us out by a 2 to 1 score in a very close game. Doucet was the lone scorer on a pass from English. Medford was top favorite to win the league championship but we dampened their hopes with a solid 1 to 0 shutout. Lahclla scored the whining goal. Vautour, English, and Morgan to were great. We racked up North Quincy on goals by English and Palumbo in a good 2 to 1 game. The same week we had a real tough come-from-behind win against Revere. This was a wide open game and had to do it the hard way with a four goal period to win by a 6 to 4 count. Chelsea posed no great problem as our fast skating line bombed them with a 3 to 0 shutout on goals by Labella, Morgan to, and Guarino. We again had to come from behind against Somervillc and nosed them, out in the closing second 2 to L Morgan to scored on a solo and Kelliher banged one home on an assist from Barry and Vautour to save the day. Our return game with Maiden again ended in a stalemate. We lead going into the final stretch only to have them tie it up and go ahead on two quick goals. With two second left, Doucet salvaged our lie. Quincy played us to a 1 to 1 tie in another last minute hair raiser after we lead all the way. Against North Quincy we played sloppy hockey and were fortunate to come up with another tie game, 1 to 1. The Mustangs o f Medford revenged their carUcr loss to us by turning the tables and squeaking out a 3 to 2 win. We lead in the final period only to lapse as two long shots from the blue line dented the strings. In our worst game of the season we fell apart against Revere in a definite 4 to 1 loss. Labella managed to score with assists going to Doueette and Morganto. We bounced back in a complete reversal of form against Chelsea as we shut them oi(t again 4 to 0. Ray, Morganto, Barry and Kelliher scored on assists from Barry. Ray, and Labella. Colosi was outstanding in goal. Somerville tipped us over in a heartbreaker despite our outplaying them and outshooting them by a 2 to 1 score. Our third meeting with Maiden proved nothing for the season as we again wound up in a tie. This time it was 3 to 3. Morganto, Labella, and Vautour scored for the tide. Quincy showed no mercy as they poured it on to us in our 4 to 0 loss. There was no question of doubt as to the better team as they bombed us from start to finish. We again reversed our form and came back against North Quincy to win 5 to 3. At one time we lead by four goals only to fall into a lapse but did manage to hold on to win. Labella, Ray, Morganto, Barry, and Doueette proved to be our big guns. Medford won the deciding game against us and this drove us out of the playoffs and just about gave them the championship. This one was lost by a 3 to 1 margin. Our final two games against Revere and Chelsea both wound up in tie games, 1 to 1 and 2 to 2. Our overall season showed seven wins, six losses, and seven ties. Good luck to all the seniors as you skate down the rink of life. For some, a day of weeping: for some, a day of joy; and for some, a day of daze. Somehow we survived, as did our mothers. Gradually we adjusted, and as the years passed, we progressed up the ladder of book and social learning. New-found friends molded us into a spirit of togetherness and we became a part of the generation gap . Our casual acceptance of everyday elementary school life was not to last forever as we received a jolt when we found ourselves cast into the turbulent sea of junior high school. New adjustments to new surroundings, new faces, and a new way of life soon became part of us. Here we discovered that boys in all cases were not the terrible creatures we firmly believed them to be. Boys became more tolerant of the girls and found they were not the far out pests they were in past years. We survived the seventh and eighth trades and managed to discover we were now looked up to by little ones we left behind. We were now to be considered Freshmen in the Parlin School . We overcame the rigors of regimentation, the reciting of Character, the gestapo methods of the traffic squad, and the continued social disinclination of the opposite sex. All this and the childishness of the lower classmen made our longing for our exodus a thing of great desire. June came and here we were on the threshold of expectation as were soon to be part of our idols, members of Everett High School. September and utter bewilderment! Brothers, sisters, and bosom friends turned against us as we entered the Big House . Rules, regulations, freedom of Jiling, new programs, where to go, how to get there, no one to help us, utter chaos was ours! How we yearned for the good old Parlin! We managed to live through it all and gradually adjusted to our insignificance and became a part of a smooth working machine. We soon elected Cheryl Erickson as President of our class and Julie Camarata and Karen Feraco as Vice-president and Secretary. Our representatives in the Council were Janet Hanson, Pauline Miller, and Elaine Scotti. Lucci, Foley, Fields, Moore, and Carpenito became familiar names from our class on the gridiron. Likewise did many of us become familiar with that little office occupied by. Mr . Leo, our Submaster. The year passed quickly as we witnessed the football games, the basketball and hockey games, and in the spring our baseball heroes and track men. Never will we forget our dances where girls danced with boys (in their dreams) and boys just stood around and gawked. We participated in the strike because we didn ' t liave time out to see our Red Sox play in the World Series. Our girls introduced the long-hair look and mini skirts and the boys became a ittle sloppier in their dress. This was progress! All too soon it ended and most of s found ourselves eleva d to the Junior class, j j j ||| As Juniors our mouths became a little larger and our walks a little more flagrant. We were quite taken up with our importance. We changed some of our class officers with the election of Ralph Young as [Resident, Ray Marshall, Vice-president, Karen Feraco as Secretary, and Kathy Jones as Treasurer. We added an additional member to the Council as we elected Gloria Catalano, PauUne Miller, Elaine Scotti, and Andrea Yancey. Our football and basketball teams were not champs but they gave their all. Hockey became the number one sport as our heroes garnered the Greater Boston League Championship. How about our big protest for the War Moratorium! Remember how we were persuaded to return to our classes and practice Peace and not Rebellion. At this stage of the game we broke the ice with adjustments of the dress code. At last the girls were able to wear slacks during the cold days of winter. The boys were able to wear their hair a little longer providing it was neat and cleaji. Of course we had the usual few who couldn ' t distinguish dungarees from slacks. The cold of winter gave way to the beauty of spring and with it came our Junior Prom, our first real formal. Mr. DeRubeis and his diligent committee was to be commended for their wonderful job in transforming our gym into A Piece of Paradise . What a complete transition as casual dress gave way to the splendor of beauty and pageantry. Beautiful girls and beautiful gowns coupled with the grandeur of young men attired in formal dress left nothing to be wished for. Mai Habeeb was our Queen and reflected the beauty of the entire assembly. Our Junior year flew by and with it had come the appointments for yearbook pictures and the ordering of class rings. June Rohner and Vin Simonelli held us spellbound as they topped the field in the Elks Oratorical Contest. The Seniors left and this was the end of the year. Our final summer of basking on the sun-drenched sands of Reve re Beach came to a close and we returned as Seniors. We at once set sail and elected Paul Dattoli as our President ably assisted by Ray Marshall, Vice-president; Karen Feraco, Secretary; and Audrey Classman, Treasurer. We sent as representatives to the Student Council Andrea Yancey, Gloria Catalano, Terrie Epstein, Al Massaro, and Elaine Scotti. Our athletic teams were not of championship calibre but they gave a great account of their abilities. One big disappointment was the loss of our source of coffee and do-nuts through the closing of Vargi ' s. What a catastrophe. ' Then came yearbook candids, yearbooks and the elections, glossies, part time jobs, studies, college boards, college applications, more studies, hopes for the future and plans for the future. Then we had those bomb scares. At first a lark, but then a nuisance when the weather became cold and we froze after the evacuation. January 1 and the appearance of our council members before the School Committee and the abolishment of the dress code was a hi-light of the year. No more formal attire! Freedom of dress as far as hair for the boys was concerned, whether on the head or face. Dungarees are in for both boys and girls. All this on a trial basis til June. This was certainly progress? It seems only yesterday that these little hands were holding so tightly to mother ' s hands and here we are nearing the end. How the years flew by. Yearbooks have been distributed and we know the end is at hand. We silently offer our thanks to loving parents for their help and understanding along the way.. We thank our teachers for their patience and tolerance, and to all our friends and classmates we say So Long . May the future years refresh your Memories of things n ot here brought to light. May all the good things so wished for and sought after be a certainty. This is in part our history. Not great, not small, but to all to have and to hold as Graduates of Everett High.
