We felt that we would be able to hold our own with the nucleus of veterans and the newcomers to the squad. Captains Erickson, Baniewicz, and Hughes led the Red Tide against Newton in the opener. We managed to get off to a good start start as Rauseo intercepted a pass and returned it to the six yard line. Parisi, behind the blocking of Hughes and O’Donnell, banged over for a score. The conversion failed. Newton came back and scored on a pass and converted to take the lead. Erickson then came back and showed his running ability and scored from the twenty-four yard line. The con¬ version failed. In the second half we bogged down. Newton scored twice in the meantime, once on an intercepted pass, and we bowed down, twenty-one to twelve. We regained our composure against Somerville. Once again we opened the scoring early as Parisi bombed through a huge hole for twenty-eight yards and a T.D. after Pendola had recovered a fumble. Erickson converted. Somerville came back after a pass interception and tied the score. The third period was a stalemate. In the final quarter Baniewicz recovered a fumble on the thirty-four yard line. Erickson passed to Washington for the score. Washington converted. Then Wash¬ ington frosted the cake when he intercepted a pass and returned to their seventeen yard line. Erickson then swept behind Enfanto for the final score. No conversion. We emerged victorious by a twenty-two to eight count. Litvak, Fabiano, LaRosa, and Puopolo stood out on defense. The Presidents of Quincy followed and this was the most exciting game of the year. Again we shot out to an early lead as Washington intercepted on our four yard line and romped for ninty-six yards into the end zone, after what had seemed to be a disastrous fumble on our part. No conversion. After the next kickoff we took the ball on downs and marched the length of the field, aided by a pass interference play, and Parisi bolted in from four yards out. No conversion. After a punt exchange, Erickson faded to his left and ran for sixty yards and our third touchdown. Erickson converted. Another ex¬ change and again Erickson duplicated with a fifty-seven yard scoot into pay dirt. No conversion. As the half ended, Erickson faded and passed to Fabiano for score number five. Conversion good. In the meantime Quincy had managed to score twice. We felt pretty secure with thirty-two points for the half. We were unable to do anything right in the second half and failed to score. Quincy was not idle as they passed, passed, passed and drew up to two points of our total. They failed on a two-point conversion and we eked out with the win by a thirty-two to thirty margin. For the first time since 1905 Everett bowed in defeat to a strong Revere team by a score of twenty-eight to fourteen. The less said the better. We jumped off to a fast lead on a Parisi T.D. but this was short lived. Revere played a great game and we were outclassed in every department. Rauseo managed to score again, but this was not to be our day. The Medford game was a game of revenge for the two defeats of the past years. The first period we fumbled away three opportunities to score. Our luck changed in the second quarter as LaRosa intercepted a Mustang pass and ran it back to their eighteen yard line. Moore and Parisi took turns in advancing the ball and Parisi went in for the score with fifteen seconds left in the half. We failed to convert. The third quarter was scoreless. In the final period Washington ran a punt to their eighteen yard line and then Erickson ran it in from there. No conversion. Medford managed to score in the closing minutes of the game but we emerged the victor by a twelve to seven margin. North Quincy proved to be a powerhouse as they rolled over the Big Red. We held our own for the first period but fell apart in the se cond quarter. We managed to get on the score board on a sixty yard scoot by Parisi and a Washington conversion, but this was our total for the day. North crossed our goal line for eighteen points in the first half. The second half saw them score two more touchdowns and we ate humble pie by a thirty to eight loss. Fabiano, Washington, Parisi, Moore, and Erickson were outstanding in defeat. The following week we visited the North Shore and took on Beverly determined to make up for our loss of the previous year. Erickson opened the scoring with a two-yard run and Washington converted. After a Puopolo interception, Inter- bartolo and Parisi moved the ball to the thirteen and then Parisi bolted in. Conversion good. DeMarco then pounced on a Beverly fumble. Moore passed to Erickson in the end zone and we had twenty points. Beverly came back and scored twice in the second period. In the third quarter the Red Tide roared back. Rauseo intercepted at midfield and on the next play Moore passed to Washington and the feather-fingered end skipped for fifty yards and a score. After the kickoff, Fabiano intercepted and fled to the three yard line. Parisi then scored and then converted on a run. Once again we took the ball away and Parisi scored T.D. number three for the day. Washington converted. Beverly made a feeble attempt to come back to no avail. Parisi finished off with his fourth score of the day on a forty-three yard run. Coach Sarno cleared the bench in our fifty to twenty win. Against rival Malden, Parisi was again the back of the day. We reduced the Golden Tornado to a gentle puff. Malden broke the ice and jumped to an early lead. This snapped the boys out of it and five minutes later Parisi zig-zagged his way for thirty-six yards and a score. No conversion. This was all for the first half. In the third period Washington snagged a Malden pass and ran it back to the ten yard line from where Parisi lugged it in for the score. Parisi converted. On the final play of the game Parisi again crossed the line and we iced the game by a twenty-two to seven count. Anything can happen in our Turkey Day game with Chelsea and usually does. We have known the bite of the dog of humiliation in the past. The first two times we handled the ball we scored. Parisi went in on a thirteen yard jaunt. No conversion. After a punt exchange, Puopolo took over and galloped in from the four yard line. Conversion missed. We took the ball on downs and then had a punt blocked on our twenty yard line. Puopolo again came to the fore with an interception. Again we marched the length of the field and Parisi scored. Erickson converted. The third period found the ooys still hungry. We stopped a valiant attempt on the Red Devil’s part to score by stopping them on our twenty-three yard line. On the first play Parisi closed out his career, to the joy of all, with a seventy-seven yard scamper to go untouched into the end zone. This was the climax to a great day as we enjoyed our twenty-six to nothing win. To all the seniors we wish the best. May your future be crowned with success and victories in the game of life. To you go our thanks for so many happy days spent in cheering on our warriors of the gridiron in victory or defeat. -iiigmmMm 0 ' OonneJL M t Coach Erickson realized that a lack of experience and height were going to be the big obstacles to overcome as he took over his job as first year coach of the Big Red hoop team. We opened the season against our old rival Somerville on their home court. The first quarter found us down by one point but this was soon overcome as we found our shooting eyes as the whistle sounded for the second quarter. Pisacreta kept us in the game for the first period and then Washington, Erickson, and Clifford found the range. We left the court at the end of the half leading by a thirty-three to twenty-five count. We fell apart in the second half and Somerville proceeded to romp. They outscored us by twenty-two points and we bowed by a seventy-four to sixty score. Pisacreta, Washington, and Puopolo were our high scorers. We moved into a non-league game with Lexington during the Christmas holidays and they were not too nice as our second defeat of the season was presented to us. We failed to be in the game from the start. The final outcome was a devastating eighty to forty-nine loss. Washington led the pack with fifteen points. Boston Tech showed no mercy as they proceeded to make our vacation a sorry affair. They jumped off to an early lead and continued to run roughshod over us. Again it was Washington and Pisacreta doing the major scoring for us in our seventy to forty-nine loss. We closed out the old year with a trip to the North Shore to meet Beverly. The first quarter was nip-and-tuck as we led by one point. Mike Radcliffe came into his own in the second period but the rest of the team went cold. The result was that we le ft the court at the half trailing by six points. We managed to outscore them the second half but could not narrow the margin enough and so dropped a close one by a sixty-six to sixty-three margin. Erickson, Pisacreta, and Clifford were high scorers for the Red. We started the New Year in grand fashion against Quincy. We started things off in the very beginning and were never headed from there to the end. It was great to taste victory for a change and a great start for the year. The final score was sixty-three to forty-four. Pisacreta led all scorers with twenty- two points. The Mustangs of Medford were very hard to manage in our next outing. We had a poor first period even though only one point separated us. The second quarter saw us find the range and run up a ten point lead as the half ended. The second half found us completely cold and we could not buy a concerted drive for points. In the meantime, Medford dropped in everything that was thrown up with the result that we were sunk. The final count was a sixty-seven to sixty loss. Clifford, Erickson, and Pisacreta were high. We took on the Beach City boys of Revere following this loss, and were determined to regain our winning ways. We had our usual troubles the first half and fell behind by two points. The end of the half found us behind by four and this was frustrating. We came into our own in the final half and managed to contain them and do some scoring of our own. We tied up the game at the end of the third period and went on to outscore them in the final canto. The result was a satisfying seventy-four to sixty-seven win. Washington and Clifford led the Big Red in scoring. Against Malden, the first half proved to be a close ball game, and then the roof fell in again. The Tornado dominated the second half and we again fell victim. Radcliffe and Pisacreta were high scorers in our seventy-two to fifty-one loss. North Quincy proved to be a good game for the first half even though they did leave the court at the half with a six point lead. The second half jitters again caught up to us and we ran into all kinds of trouble. The result was that the Presidents went on to trample us by a sixty-nine to forty-eight score. Washington was our shining light with nineteen points. The Red Devils of Chelsea were the next opponents and this proved to be a low scoring game. We led by four points at the half through the good eye of Erickson. The second half saw us forge ahead. The final outcome was a forty-seven to forty-one win. Erickson and Pisacreta were in the double figures. The return game with Somerville proved to be a repeat of the first outing. We dropped behind in the first quarter and this proved to be our downfall. We left the court at halftime trailing by eleven points. We could not make up this deficit in the second half, although we did manage to more than hold v w % i f i our own. The final tally found us on the short end of a seventy-seven to sixty-nine count. Clifford dropped in twenty- three points in our losing cause. Quincy proved to be our cousins this year as we set them down for the second time. We bombed off to an early lead and left the court at the rest period ahead by seventeen points. We slowed down in the third period but regained our composure in the final stanza. We trotted off the floor with a seventy- eight to sixty win. Washington and Erickson led the scorers for us. The Medford Mustangs kicked back at us once again. We fell behind at the half by four points but almost caught them in the third quarter. The final period was a headache as we only garnered nine points. The final was a sixty-two to fifty-two loss. Erickson was high scorer for the night. The first half the Malden game was a real thriller as we led them by two points. Then our old nemesis appeared and we could not stand prosperity and fell behind. We tried hard to regain the lead but all in vain. We dropped this one by a score of fifty-nine to fifty-one. Greg Washington led the scorers with twenty points. We rose up in anger against North Quincy and matched them point for point all through the first half and led by one point as the whistle sounded. Once again we lost our com¬ posure and they forged ahead in the next quarter. From here in we couldn’t buy a basket. We lost this one sixty-eight to fifty-eight. We finished the season against a good Melrose team and failed to be in the ball game from beginning to end. They jumped off to an early eight point lead and stretched it to thirteen at the half. We managed to gain back a few points but then fell by the wayside again. The final score was sixty-two to forty-three. Due to the inclement weather we were forced into three cancellations. The Revere, Chelsea, and Lexington games were all buried in snow. Our congratulations to Greg Washington for being chosen as the Most Valuable Player and being so rewarded. Although not being a winning season it was an interesting one. There were times when “If’ half-time leads had been held we would have had a great season. To all those seniors we wish the best. May all your losses be turned into victories in this game of life. PauX Savant Jokn K ' J an Ste.v Feldkoii Captcu.ii Coach James Mulloy ventured into his second year very cautiously inasmuch as this year’s squad was young and inexperienced. The backbone of the squad were: returning lettermen Captain Steve Feldhoff, Henry Lahey, Paul Savage, Richard Moriarty, and Jerry O’Hearn. Pre-season jamborees helped in giving some insight as to what to expect for the future. The week before the start of the league season we met Masconomett High School in the Melrose Arena and played to a scoreless tie. In a second encounter we came out victorious over Withrop High by a score of two to nothing. These sessions gave us experience for the season ahead. We opened the league season against the Malden Tornado. This was presumed to be the team which was to win the league championship. We bowed in defeat by a six to two margin, and Malden appeared to have all that was needed to live up to the expectations. We failed to capitalize on several occasions and defensive lapses proved our complete downfall. Midway through the second period Jerry O’Hearn was rendered un¬ conscious and his place in the goal was taken by John Ryan. Despite a gallant effort on Ryan’s part, Malden scored two goals in the final period to ice the game. Clark and Lahey were responsible for our scores on passes from Feldhoff and Barbati. The Big Red skated and shot their way back against a powerful Quincy team. The Presidens jumped to an early two goal lead and it looked as though we might be in for a real bad night. However, we failed to quit and fought them right down to the finish. Barbati fed a beautiful pass to Lahey and he drove the puck into the net. Later Feldhoff stole a pass and set sail down the ice and laid a perfect pass on Lahey’s stick and again Harry drove it home to tie the game up. In the closing eight seconds, O’Hearn pulled off a spectacular save to save our well-deserved tie. We bombed our way into the win column against North Quincy by a score of four to one. We broke the game wide open in the first period with three quick goals. The all junior line of Lahey, Barbati, and Gluffling was responsible for all three tallies. Gluffling garnered two on Lahey and Barbati passes and Lahey took a drop pass from Gluffling for his score. Later Barbati made his contribution of a goal on a Rauseo pass. Ryan and O’Hearn shared goalie honors in our win. We met Columbus in a very frustrating game. We outskated, outshot, and outplayed them but could not come through with a win. Their jumpingjack goalie had thirty-three stops to our thirteen and we lost by a three to two count. Our defensive lapses were again responsible for our loss. Lahey scored both our goals in the third period on assists from Rauseo and Gluffling. Against Revere we again were guilty of not making our shots good when we had open nets. The Beach City boys held us to a two to two tie in a game which we should have won. We were very ragged at the start and Revere scored two quick goals. We managed to come back in the second and third periods on goals by Lahey and Feldhoff accounting for the scores. We came up with another poor showing against underdog Chelsea. The Red Devils came to life after a quick Everett goal by Barbati on a Savage pass. Then it happened. Nothing went right as they proceeded to skate rings around us. Chelsea scored two goals in the second period and two more in the final stanza to send us home in a discouraged feeling. We rose up in all our might against Don Bosco and scored our first shutout of the season. Everything went right for us as we scored five goals. Lahey, assisted by Feldhoff and Savage, scored two goals. Feldhoff, Barbati, and Hensey scored one each on assists by Clark, Moriarty, and Barbati. John Ryan received credit for the shutout. Our return game with Malden was another loss by a score of three to nothing. Gerry O’Hearn did a good job in the nets despite our loss. The game was all even for the first two periods and then the reserve strength and experience of Malden came to the fore. Their three goals simply were too much for us. •v t Against Quincy it was a case of come from behind in order to gain a two to two tie. Steve Feldhoff scored both our goals on assists by Lahey and Rauseo. We had Quincy at our mercy in the final period but could not sink the winning goal. Moriarty, Dimitruk, Savage, and MacLeod were great on defense. We came back into the win column against North Quincy after they scored in the first eight seconds. Six different players scored for the Crimson. Lahey scored two, and Feldhoff, Barbati, Rauseo, and Moriarty one each in the first two periods. Later Gluffling added one to finish off our scoring. We found that Columbus led a charmed life against us for the second time. Once again we did everything but score goals and bowed in defeat again by a score of three to one. Feldhoff scored our lone goal in the second period. Columbus took advantage of our lapses to score their goals. We lost our return game with Revere by a two to one count. It was a tie game at the end of the first period despite the fact that we outshot them two to one. They scored the winning goal in the second period. Lahey was responsible for our goal on a Savage assist. This was a heartbreaker to lose. We were determined to make up for our earlier loss to Chelsea and went after them with a vengeance. Feldhoff led the way with a total of three goals and two assists. Moriarty, Hensey, and Barbati also were responsible for one each with assists going to Moriarty, Savage, Barbati, and Rauseo. We emerged from this one with a six to three victory. Dimitruk and MacLeod did a great job on defense. We were snowed out of our final game of the league season against Don Bosco. The highlight of our season was our trip to Maine to the campus of Colby College in Waterville. Here we played their great freshman team and received a real lesson. We trailed them by two goals at the end of the first period but then they warmed up to the situation. Experience and age are great teachers, as our boys found out. We could not match their great numbers and the additional length of the periods took the toll of our boys. The second and third period they skated rings around us. The final score was a devastating thirteen to one loss. The experience of visiting a real college campus more than compensated for our loss. The courtesies and kindesses extended to us were wonderful. Our congratulations to Jerry O’Hearn and Harry Lahey for being named to the all-star team. To all the graduating seniors go our best wishes and hopes for success in the future.
