J rl r r U ie Season The pre-season outlook was rather dark and gloomy for the football fortunes of the Crimson Tide. Coaches Sarno, Marques, and Romboli set to work to mold our inexperienced squad into a spirited and willing team. It was hoped for, but not expected, that we would carry on our undefeated record of the past few years. Co-Captains Delmonte and Visconte led our stal- warts into battle on the very warm afternoon of September 23. Newton soon cooled us off as they proceeded to pin our ears back. Although it was very much Newton for the first half, they were only able to score until the last seven seconds on a long pass. The extra two points were added on a plunge. In the second half, we again managed to hang on until the fourth period, when a blocked punt recov- ery followed by a long pass and a four yard plunge, gave them a .fourteen to nothing victory. This marked the first time in forty-four games of Greater Boston League play that we had lost a game. We tried to regain our composure against Somer- ville in a night game, but to no avail. Again we were shut out as Somerville dominated the game. Somerville scored their first T.D. in the second quarter as we fumbled and they recovered on our twenty-eight yard line. A pass and a n yard sweep resulted in the score. We fumbled again with a minute to go in the game and Somerville bombed into the end zone to make the score twelve to nothing. This was the last night game to be held by the High School as a result of the uncalled for distur- bance by the fans at the game. We started to jell as a unit against a fairly strong Quincy team. We had to come from behind to win this one, but we proved this could be done. The Crimson matched a touchdown by the Presi- 108 V ' :% l !f ' ' - ' ' t - dents in the first half on a great Brickley to Wood pass. The same two converted for two points to tie the game up. Bill Ivey showed great form in this scoring effort. The start of the second half saw us in deep trouble as we fumbled on our own twelve- yardline. Big Bill Kerrigan set them back to their twenty-five yard line and the Tide took over. Hughes pounced on a Quincy fumble later, and Parisi, on a pitch-out from Brickley, scurried into the end zone for our second score. Ivey drove over for two more. Quincy scored later, but we hit the victory trail, sixteen to fourteen. Delmonte and Visconti were tremendous in this game. Revere became our second victim in a hard fought battle. Brickley and Soule stood out in our ground game. We scored all our points in the second period. Our first score came after Revere fumbled on their two yard line and Brickley carried over. After the kick-off, Brickley intercepted a pass, and on the first play, tossed a forty-five yard pass to Sorrentino for our second score. Both conversions were missed but we managed to win twelve to nothing. Puopolo and Giangregorio showed old-time style. We fell by the wayside against the Mustangs of Medford. White, Baron, Delmonte, and Sorrentino played their hearts out but all in vain. We managed to score on a run by Parisi and a two point con- version from Brickley to Sorrentino. Sorrentino later scored two more points on a safety as he downed the Medford signal caller in the end zone. Medford dominated the play in our twenty-eight to ten loss. Our best game to date was against undefeated North Quincy. We led off the scoring in the first period when Kerrigan blocked a punt and Wood recovered for the touchdown, the point after failed. North came back on the strong passing arm of their quarterback and scored and added a two-point con- version as the half ended. The opening kick off of the second half left us stunned as they returned the ball for an eighty-seven yard touchdown, the point- after failed. Our defensive game was great for the rest of the game. Time and time again we had great marches only to bogged down when the elusive goal line was in sight. The victory went to North, but our boys deserved the glory. The Nashua game is always a standout and this year was no exception. Sophomore Erickson had a great day as he brought the team from behind to win this one. The first period was scoreless, but the second stanza saw us drop behind by seven points. Then Soule took command and ran all over the field until he finally went in for our touchdown. The conversion was missed and we were down by one point. After a scoreless third period we came back on the running of Parisi and fine pass reception by Wood to go ahead by twelve to seven. Nashua came back with an interception with four and a half minutes left and scored to go ahead by two points. With time running out Erickson called on Nuzzolo 109 and he sprinted to midfield. An Erickson to Wood pass put the ball on the twenty-three yard line and then Erickson tossed to Sorrentino for the winning score. Ivey converted and we came out on top twenty to fourteen. DiBennedetto was great on defense with Visconti and Delmonte playing their usual stella game. We started very slowly against Maiden and found the Tornadoes a very tough foe. Maiden broke the ice in the second period and led by six to nothing at half time. The strong kicking of Anzalone kept us out of trouble up to this time. We came to life in the fourth stanzer as Parisi started to sprint for sizeable gains. Suddenly Erickson pitched back to Brickley who fooled the entire Maiden eleven by tossing a perfect pass to Sorrentino for a score. Brickley then tossed to Wood for the two point con- version. The Tide then took the ball on downs and Parisi thrilled the crowd with a thirty yard scamper for another score. The conversion was missed. This ended our scoring but the fourteen to six victory was very sweet. Thanksgiving and Chelsea. A perfect day, a full stadium, two teams with equal records, but most of all two great rivals. In the long history of Everett- Chelsea games there has never been a time when you could feel that this is a sui ' e win for either team. Today was no exception. This was not be to our day. The Red Devils opened the scoring in the first period on a fancy catch of a pass on the Crimson ' s twenty-six yard line, and romped into pay dirt unmolested. The conversion was missed. We were bogged down and never could untrack ourselves. Again in the second period, a forty-five yard march climaxed by thirty-five yard pass put Chelsea on the board again. This time the conversion was made and the half showed us behind by thirteen to nothing. We came to life momentarily in the third quarter on a pass from Brickley to Baron for a touchdown and Sorrentino added with a two point conversion. Chelsea added three points on a field goal to increase their lead. The fourth period proved disastrous as the Red Devils inter- cepted pass after pass and finally scored on one interception to put the finishing touches on a sad day by a score of twenty-three to eight. The success of a team is not measured in games won and lost but in the measure of the individual ' s effort to perfect the performance of the team. To all the Seniors we offer our congratulations for a job well done. May your future be free from regrets and filled with success. ,11 • 5? Dame Fortune was not smiling as Coach Pelosi met with his squad for the first time. He well real- ized that he lacked experience and height and with- out these two ingredients it was going to be a long and cold winter in more ways than one. To a certain extent this proved to be the case. There was a very willing group to work with but the natural handi- caps were not too easy to overcome. However, as was proven, there were the good nights and the bad nights, the bitterness of defeat and the sweetness of victory. Our pre-league game against Reading showed promise for the club even though we lost. Co-Captain Pete Crowley set a great example as he dropped in twenty-one points while Johnson gathered in seven- teen, if the rest of the club could get their share of points this would be a great asset to us. We dropped this one by a score of eighty-one to sixty-two. Against Brookline we had a good first period but fell apart in the middle two. The final quarter saw us holding our own but we were unable to make up the deficit of the previous periods. Dascoli, Green, Johnson, and Crowley were all in double figures. Co-Captain Dolan was out standing on defense in our sixty-five to fifty-three loss. We opened the league season against neighboring Chelsea and they were overcome by our stalwarts. Five of our boys were in the double figures. The game was a nip and tuck affair until the final quarter when we managed to drop in twenty-six points to their thirteen to allow us to come from l)ehind and win by an eighty-three to seventy-eight count. Johnson was high man with twenty-seven points. I 12 Against Somerville we played very fine ball and there was only one point in their favor separating us at the quarter. The second period proved to be our downfall as they outhooped us by ten points. We managed to show a good account of ourselves despite our lack of height in the third quarter but fell by the wayside in the final canto and they added three more points to their lead. Johnson with seventeen points and Crowley with twelve points were high for us in our sixty-eight to fifty-three loss. Underwood and Fournier played very aggressive ball. Our next game at New Bedford was canceled due to a previous commitment of New Bedford team. If league results were at stake this game would be played at a later date. Both Johnson and Green had their shooting eyes against Quincy, but our defense fell apart. The first period showed us dropping behind by seven points and then pick up speed and only lag by four points as the half ended. We continued our good work in the next quarter and needed one point to tie it up. Then the roof fell in as the Presidents dropped in twenty-seven points and shot their shooting average up to ninety percent from the floor. We dropped this one by a score of eighty-three to seventy-six. Our game with Medford proved to be ding-dong, drag-out, down to the wire battle. Medford took an early six point lead only to have the Big Red catch up and go ahead by six points as the half ended. The second half saw the Mustang kick right back and narrowed the gap to one point. Both teams matched points in the final stretch run and as the final whistle sounded we were on the winning side by a score of seventy-six to seventy-five. Johnson showed a very hot hand with twenty-eight points followed by Dascoli with fourteen. Hapless Revere proved to be no match as the entire Everett squad participated. The first quarter was a ball game as we led them by five points. From here on the game became a rout. We moved out by a score of thirty-one to seventeen, then fifty-one to thirty- one and the final was seventy-five to forty-eight. Johnson, Dascoli, Green, and Crowley were in double figures. The Golden Tornadoes of Maiden and the Crimson of Everett put on a great show for three periods. First one team would be ahead and then the other would forge to the front. The final stanza saw our shots rimming the basket and falling out while theirs dropped in. The result was that they pulled ahead by a margin of ten points and we were beaten by a seventy-six to sixty-six score. Once again it was Johnson with twenty-three points followed by Dascoli and Green with seventeen and fourteen. Against North Quincy we played one of our best games as we took over and consistently moved ahead as the game progressed. Di Benedetto and Ivey, as well as Dolan played a great defensive game. Johnson and Green showed the way with twenty-one and eighteen points as we romped to a seventy-two to fifty-four victory. Our return game with the Chelsea Red Devils saw them turn the tide on us. We roared off into a good first quarter lead and then went cold before the 1 1 3 half was over. This continued in the third quarter and even our late spurt was not enough to get us into the win column as the underdog defeated us by a seventy-three to seventy-one margin. Green, Dascoli, and Dolan were in good form as our usual big guns were well covered all night. Our return engagement with Somerville was not the thriller that the previous one was. We bowed out of this one by a score of sixty-two to fifty-five. Crowley and Johnson led the scorers with Dascoli and Green close behind. We now faced New Bedford for the first time and this was to be a good game against the league leaders. The first period was all defense and we did manage to have a nine to seven edge. The game opened up a bit in the second quarter as New Bed- ford led twenty-five to twenty-four at the half. The third period ended with a tie and then New Bedford forged ahead as we could only get three baskets from the floor. The final score was fifty-nine to fifty. Johnson, Green, Dascoli, and Crowley did all the scoring for Everett. Our return go with Quincy was a repeat of the first performance. They moved out to a fast eight point lead in the first quarter and we almost caught them as the half ended. In the third quarter they bombed us with twenty-six points to our fourteen and this was all that was needed. We tried hard to come back and did manage to narrow the spread to ten points in our eighty-eight to seventy-eight down- fall. Dascoli was high with Johnson, Crowley, and Green close behind. The Medford game proved there was a wide open basket for both sides. We roared ahead by a score of twenty-nine to seventeen at the quarter and stretched it to fifty to thirty-six at the half. Then the Mustang kicked up and out scored us in the third furlong but we came down the stretch in a cloud of dust and roared under the wire by a score of ninety- eight to seventy-eight. Johnson had twenty-nine points followed by Crowley and Dascoli with nineteen and eighteen and Fournier came into his own with ten points. Revere again offered little competition as we were able to score almost at will. We jumped off to our early ten point lead and spread this to twenty-two as the half ended. Coach Pelosi cleared the bench and almost every boy participated in the score. The final buzzer showed us to be the winner by eighty- nine to forty-three. Once again it was Crowley and Johnson leading the scorers. For three periods we played a great game against Maiden. At the end of the first period we led two points and at the half by five. Maiden closed the gap in the third period and then forged to the front before the final whistle. The final score was seventy- four to sixty-nine. We go to press with a couple of games to go. We know that the boys will continue to give their all, even though there is no Tech Tourney in sight. May the future for all those participating Seniors carry with i t the lesson so well learned and earned on the basketball court. May success and Happiness be yours and may you dribble the ball of good fortune thru life. I I 4 The pre-season predictions among hockey lovers was that Everett was the team to watch out for in Metropolitan League competition. Coach Henry Schlegel would promise nothing, but did intimate that, with this group of lettermen returning a great deal should be expected if they should live up to their potential. With such boys as Captain Herman Lawrence, Most Valuable Player in the league his sophomore year, and Tom Gibson, Most Valuable Player in his junior year, it looked as if the opposing goalies were going to be in for some rough night. According to alb rumors this was the greatest group of skaters and shooters to represent the school since the coming of hockey to Everett eight years ago. The boys worked hard and were well instructed for the season ahead and in pre-season scrimmage showed that they were ready. Two non-league games with Lynn English and Canton High proved that they were ready and in fine fettle for the frays to follow. We opened the season in the Boston Arena on December 9 against old rival Chelsea High. We were very slow to start and could not put together a concerted attack in the first period even though we did manage to hold a one to nothing lead as the buzzer sounded for the end of the period. Perhaps the boys were trying too hard and were emotional- ly too high for the start. Tn the second period we 1 16 came into our own with a great display oT stick handling, passing, and shooting and the onslaught started. Five goals were fired home in this period and things were looking up. The good work was continued in the final stanza as three more goals were drilled home. It was a happy group of players who left the ice after this nine to nothing shutout. Ed Clifford and Bob Clancy performed the hat trick with three goals each while Jack Morganto had five assists. The Chelsea goalie had been bombarded with thirty one saves which proved we could shoot. Don Boscoe had never been a great threat in past years and the same feeling prevailed now. Once again we got off to a slow start and it took us a full period before we could put together a real attack. Herb Lawrence set the stage for greater things after he broke the ice with a sole score. Herb upped his scoring to two later in the game along with Morganto. Clancy and Donnelly aided the cause with a goal each. Once again we enjoyed a victory by a score of six to two. Maiden has always proved to be a headache to us over the years in our quest for hockey superior- ity and this year was to be no exception to rule. On paper we were by far the better club, but the Tornadoes evidently failed to believe this. Nothing went right for us and we continued our usual slow starting habit. In the past we had overcome this after the initial period but out lethargic play contin- ued through the middle of the third canto. In the meanwhile Maiden had been building up a comfort- able four to one lead. With about two minutes to go we suddenly awoke and as the final whistle sounded we had managed to drive home three goals to tie up the game. Lawrence had two goals and Clifford and Clancy one each. Our slow start had proved to be our downfall and pushed us out of first place in league standing. Against North Quincy, Sorrentino gained his second shutout of the season. This was the first time we played consistant hockey from the opening face off. Our defense proved to be invulnerable and our offense was great. Scoring honors went to Gibson, Clancy, and Nee while assists went to Brickley, Morganto, and Lawrence. It was great to be in the win column again. We suffered our first upset of the season against Quincy High. We found it impossible to untrack ourselves and were not living up to the reputation of being great shooters. Time and time again we broke men down the ice only to lose the puck without getting a shot off. In the meantime Quincy was shooting away with the result suffered we our first shutout by a score of four to nothing. Our next outing was against unbeaten and untied Christopher Columbus and if we were to bounce back into contention we had to win this game. Without doubt this was our best team effort of the season as we completely dominated play all night. Morgan- to, Clifford, and Clancy left no doubt that they were in the game at all times while Lawrence and Nee outskated and outsmarted the Discoverers at every turn. Lawrence, Gibson, Clancy, and Clifford 117 each scored a goal as Brickley, Gibson, and Morgan- to gained assists. This was a big one for us and gave us added hopes for a State Tourney playoff berth. We roared up and down the ice against Revere and soon had a three to one lead. Then it happened! We lost all our momentum and dropped back into our evil ways. Revere bombed back and tied up the game. Finally Lawrence broke loose in old style form and banged home the winning tally in a hair raising finish. Lawrence had two goals and Gibson and Glancy one each. This win proved that we could score goals and come through when the going was tough. If we could put all our efforts together in a concerted effort for the whole game nothing could stop us. We went into the second half the schedule with high hopes as we faced Chelsea for the second time. Either the Red Devils had vastly improved or we were back in our old rut. The Red and Black scored first and held us at bay until the middle of the final period. Lawrence and Brickley finally broke loose on individual efforts and came thru with goals and gave us a very narrow two to one win. This was a real squeaker. We came back in real style against Don Bosco the following week and it was only the miraculous goal tending of the Bosco boy that prevented us from going into double figures. The insertion of soph- omore Dan Busby seemed to work wonders as the team came to life. This lad scored three goals and assisted on another by Gibson. Lawrence each had assists and the final goal was scored by Lawrence to give us another shutout and a five nothing victory. Old nemesis Maiden was next in line and they continued to hold their jinx over us. Once again we had first period jitters and they went ahead by two goals. After a goal by Lawrence and an assist by Busby we started to move but this was short lived as Maiden came right back to score. We played good hockey in the final period but couldn ' t get a break, Lawrence was robbed as the puck hit the goal post in an open net and bounced the wrong way. We bow- ed three to one and felt quite dejected. We were out to avenge the shutout which Quincy had administered in our previous game and we new it was a must if we wished to retain our second place standing in the league. We lapsed into our old trouble of failing to get off shots and this proved to be disastrous. Gibson managed to get one goal on an assist from Lawrence and this was the sum of our efforts of the night. Quincy scored consistently in each period and we were on the shortend of a four to one score. Time does not permit us to print the results of our final three games against North Quincy, Columbus, and Revere but we know that the Big Red will be fighting right down to the final whistle. We say farewell to all those Seniors who have thrill- ed us by their great play and determination and wish them great shooting on the rink of life. May your every endeavor load to a score for success. P.S. Victories in our last games put us in the State Tourney but we lost our opener to Waltham ' .WZ. We are firm in our belief that, Action speaks louder than words , hence, we will try to present somewhat of a pictorial review of some of the scenes of our sojourn in our Alma Mater Everett High School. Our exit from the Parlin School was full of expectations as we took that short diagonal walk to the confines of The Big House It was with anxiety and trepidations that we taced the trials and tribulations of all sopho- mores. It took a little time to settle down and to adjust to the strangeness of our new surroundings, but with the help of the Sen- iors we soon learned that, directionwise, they were the last to go to for any solace or com- fort. We were soon introduced to the thrill of those great afternoons of football. Our first two years we were able to hoot and holler our team to undefeated and championship seasons Our final year saw our gallant men fall out of the championship class, but still we were very proud and thrilled by their performance Of course our Seniors were especially well represented in all our athletic endeavors. Our basketball and hockey teams took over and filled a great void during so many of those long winter nights. It would have been an eternity without them to root for. Our bandbox gym echoed and reechoed, win or lose. Only one of our three years did we make the Tech Tourney but our failure to be champs did not dampen our ardor as we enjoyed our wins and excused our losses. Then there was that trek to the Boston Arena to see our great hockey team in action and thrill us with so many wins and so few losses. The coming of spring gave us the chance to get out and cheer our track and baseball teams on to victory as we battled every team down to the wire. Here too our victories out- numbered our defeats by far. Remember those extra-curricular activities which were so much a part of our high school lives. Gilbert and Sullivan gave all the song- birds a chance to excel. The Band and its wonderful performances at the stadium still rings in our ears. Dramatics and the strong possibility of the actors never reaching Holly- wood was always an uncertainty. The Spanish Club, French Club, and Italian Club all kept us busy. There were at least a million laughs on Italian night. The Library Staff and Ly- ceum, aided by the Oratorical Contest, filled us with untold words, words, words. Choral Arts and Reces.s Club gave us so much to sing about. Speaking of recess, we would be remiss if we failed to mention those chummy get-to- gethers in the Senior Dining Hali of our cafeteria with its savory offerings of such a variety of hot meals and those snacky tid- m n aware s bits!!! We survived and enjoyed every minute of it. The systematic ride from the top floor to the basement and back to the top floor for successive classes became a ritual which was thorouprhly enjoyed with the aid of our self- propelled elevators. Those Friday night dances gave us a taste of the social life so much a necessity to us. The Football Dances and the choosing of the Queens were always outstanding affairs. We can never forget our Junior Prom, a very formal affair, in which our real sophistication came to light. Here for the first time we truly realized there was so much beauty and manliness combined with scholastic wizardry within our class. Our enthusiasm for picture posing, candid or otherwise, stirred us and compensated for our great desire and search for knowledge and constant study. Time flew as we look back. There were the good times and the bad, but we began to realize more fully that this was life. Our afternoon jobs and concentrated efforts to- wards college preparation were natural steps toward meeting the competition of the world we would have to face. All too soon our Senior year, so long in coming, seemed to fly away. How we had looked forward to its coming, but as it started towards its conclusion there was an uneasiness and an uncertainty which seemed to accom- pany our plans for the future. Deep down we knew that those so-called Best days of our lives were passing but we were reluctant to believe or accept this fact. Our Senior Prom was the climax to our social life. Never will we forget that gala evening at Montvale Plaza. Young ladies be- decked in the splendor of their evening gowns accompanied by so many attractive young men in formal attire was a far cry from the everyday classroom dress. Lady Spring came and with her our prepa- rations for our final days of fun and frivolity. We managed to survive Classday and our noc- turnal journey into the unknown. Most re- tained the dignity so engenedered by their parents and had fun and laughs, while the usual few acted in the same way they had been productive in their contributions as pupils. We gathered as a class for the last time as our graduation became the parting of the ways. Our roads were devious. Our achieve- ments and successes would be varied. The future would be a maze of uncertainties and decisions. Life can be and will be productive. No matter where our paths may lead, no matter how difficult the way, no matter how much success or failure, always will be present our days at Everett High and ....
