I 9 6 6 94 as GJioraf Cnrts G a6 98 103 Head Coach Sarno and his assistants, Al Romboli and Bob Marques, worked hard to field a team like last year ' s. This was not expected to be as good a club as the previous, due to graduation. Co-Captains Goc and Walsh led the Big Red against Newton in the opener. Russo did a great job of running and pass catching as he teamed with Champi to put us ahead at the half on Pietrantonio ' s conversion, 8-6. Champi ran his backs in the second half and Russo scored number 2. Champi scored the next one as Russo converted. In the final period Champi intercepted and ran the ball in close from where Santacroce scored and Champi converted. Victory was ours 30-6. Against North uincy, Champi spearheaded us after an early game deficit as he ran and passed. First he ran for a 34 yard score. Then after they had scored, Sapienza took their kickoff and ran for 80 yards and a score behind Pietrantonio ' s great block. Muollo converted. Russo then intercepted and we moved on the ground until Champi sneaked the touchdown. Again in the second period we marched until Pini banged over and Champi converted. We forced North to punt and Champi then tossed to Pietrantonio for another score. Pini converted to make it 36-8 at the half. The third period was score- 1 less as Cioc. Walsh, Guarino. and Muollo put on a great defensive show. North scored twice in the final period and we offset this with Champi ' s long l)()mb to Pietrantonio as Pini converted. We won handily 44-20. 108 A rugged Quincy eleven made a battle of it for three periods. Our defnsive unit with Apruzzese, Guarino, Marr, Wallace, Goc, and Rogers was great. Kerrigan blocked a punt in the second period and Rogers recovered on the 17 yard line. The great President line stopped us but after we forced a kick, Sapinza advancd the ball to where Champi passed to Pietrantonio for the score. Quincy ' s passing attack failed as Pietrantonio intercepted and we scored again on Champi ' s sneak. Frank then converted and we won 14-0. The Arlington Spy Ponders proved to be no match in a game we broke open in the first period. A pass, Champi to Sapienza, accounted for the first score with Pietrantonio converting. Then Guarino inter- cepted and ran 45 yards for a score and Muollo con- verted. Arlington came back with a field goal (?) to close the half at 16-3. Delmonte recovered a third quarter fumble to set the stage for Russo to gallop for T.D. number 3. In the final quarter Champi passed to Pietrantonio for another score. In the waining moments another pass brought the ball up close and Soule scored the final T.D. in our 38-9 win. The Medford Mustangs gave us little opposition. In the first period Sapienza swept for the first score. We scored three more times before the half ended. Russo scored on a fine run, Pini plunged for the next, and Champi tossed to Pietrantonio for number 3. The lone conversion was by a pass to Pietran- tonio from Champi. The start of the third period saw Russo grab a Medford pass and a fine return. Then Soule went for 15 yards and the score. Bren- nan came up with a T.D. on a nice run after we took the ball on downs later. Russo again intercepted in the final period and ran for fifty yards and the score. Soule convert ed to make the final a 46-0 win. The combination of Pietrantonio and Champi shook Somerville. The first score was a pass of 50 yards from Frank to Bill in the first period. Later Sapienza stepped up and intercepted and returned it for a score. Muollo converted. The second half was a defensive battle until Kerrigan intercepted and on the following play Pini went for 45 yards and the T.D. Champi again to Muollo for the conversion. Wasileski, Appruzzese, and Wallace were standouts in our 22-0 victory. We invaded Nashua for the Schoolboy Game of the year. It was a wing-ding. Champi was a one- man gang as he ran for one touchdown and passed for four more. Nashua received and marched down for a score. We received and at once Champi tossed to Pietrantonio for 53 yards for a T.D. The conver- sion failed and we trailed. Again Nashua took the ball and scored but failed to convert. We were in real trouble. We failed to panic and Champi went 109 to the air again. He passed to Soule on their 45 yard line and he scored and Muollo converted to tie it up. As time moved on we forced a kick and took posses- sion on the 48 yard line. Frank cooly passed to Pie- trantonio for 52 yards and a score as the half ended. After the start of the second half we recovered a fumble in their territory. Champi rolled out to score on the next play from 17 yards out. Pini converted. Nashua managed to score again but we came right back. Again Champi passed to Pietrantonio and he went over. Ivey converted. Final score 38-20. The Golden Tornado of Maiden tried to rise up and blow us from the undefeated ranks. We were slow to start an d perhaps took the game a little lightly. We soon found we were in a ball game. Champi pulled us together and started us on our way. We worked the ball down field and Champi banged in from two yards out. Ivey converted. Maiden came right back with a score but failed to convert. This was all for the first half. In the third period we again marched and Pini went over from 3 yards out. Pietrantonio converted. Maiden scored their last touchdown and failed to convert. In the final period Visconte intercepted and ran for 40 yards and the final score as we breathed easier after a real tough 22-12 battle. Our final outing was against underdog and under- rated Chelsea. This was rivalry and past perform- ances meant nothing on Thanksgiving Day. The stadium was so crowded we only had room left for the teams. The first period was a real defensive battle with the Red Devils rising to great heights. The first break came as Pini blocked a kick and Kerrigan re- covered on their six yard line. After a penalty and after being dumped for a loss, Champi faded to the 19 yard line and, hit Russo in the end zone for the score. Ivey converted. Chelsea roaied back on a screen pass and moved to our six yard line where Russo made the tackle. Chelsea moved in and scored and converted to tie it up as the half ended. In the second half the Crim.son wore down their rival. First Champi passed to Russo and then to Pietran- tonio and then closed out his career with a nine yard run into the end zone and later another score from 3 yards out. Muollo made the final conversion as we wound up another undefeated season with a 22-8 will. Once again this gave us the Class A Championship. To all those boys who woi ' kod and played so hard we say. Well Done. May our lives be all wins and your futures be crammed with Championships. 1 10 Coach Bud Pelosi had high hopes for a success- ful season as he looked over his all senior team. The one thing that was lacking was height. If the team with its experience could overcome this obstacle they could have a good season. Co-captains Caiazzo, Champi, and Romano led the team into a pre-season game against Reading High on December 7. The first quarter was a nip-and- tuck battle as we dropped behind by three points. In the second quarter we managed to overcome our jitters and find the range and end the half with a lead of six points. The second half started out an even keel with both teams going all out. The final quarter saw us again find our sights as we finished up on the long end of a sixty-six to fifty-nine score. Romano, Vagramian, and Caiazzo were high scorers with eighteen, sixteen, and fifteen points. We started the league season against a very strong North Quincy team. This proved to be a real thriller for three periods. At the end of the first half we left the court down by one point. At the end of the third period we had overcome this and led by one on the great eye of Romano. Then the great height of North took its toll and the roof fell in on us as they outscored us by nine points and we had lost our first game by a sixty-four to fifty-six score. Romano was high man with twenty one points as Champi shined on defense. Our outing against Chelsea was a nightmare for three periods as our defense broke down and we were having trouble finding the basket. The final quarter saw us come out of it and begin to register. We finally pulled away to a five point win in our sixty-five to sixty score. Bodnaruk came up with seventeen points and Romano had sixteen for his night ' s work. Old rival Somerville came next and as usual this was a thriller. We were completely out of it for the first half as we dropped behind by eleven points. In the third quarter we caught fire and made up this deficit to the pleasure of the crowd. The final quar- ter was basket for basket down to t he final bell when Vagramian tossed in a two pointer for a low scoring forty-eight to forty-six win. High man for the night was Al Vagramian with sixteen points. We started the new year against the New Bed- ford Whalers and we matched each other almost basket for basket with only a two point difference in their favor separating us at the half. This dif- ference continued as the game progressed and as the final gun sounded we had to admit to our second defeat, sixty-one to fifty-seven. Caiazzo and Vagra- mian were high with thirteen and twelve points respectively. The Quincy Presidents came to town and proceed- ed to bomb us from the opening whistle as they roared off to a first half thirty-nine to twenty-six lead. We failed to recover from this in the second half as they continued to run wild on us. Romano with a hot hand for twenty-six points was our shin- ing light in our eighty-one to sixty-five loss. Against Medford we did an about face as every- thing we threw up dropped in for a score. We left the floor at the half on the long end of a forty-nine to thirty-one score. The second half saw the en- raged Mustang kick back and outscore us. We were getting points but they were getting more. We managed to hang on and as the game ended we had posted a ninety to eighty win. Vagramian had twenty-nine points followed by Romano with twenty. Revere proved to be a very weak team and after the first half they were not in the ball game. The entire starting team was in double figures as we cleared the bench in our ninety-four to sixty-four romp. The golden Tornadoe of Maiden proved to be only a gentle breeze as we moved out to a half time lead of forty-three to nineteen. Coach Pelosi cleared the bench for the second half and this made it a fairly even ball game. The final outcome was in our favor by a score of seventy-five to forty-nine. Bodnaruk was high man with twenty points. We felt that we would take the measure of North Quincy in our return game but we were doomed to be disappointed. Our defence fell apart and we couldn ' t buy a basket in the first half as good shots would hit the rim and bounce out. The spread at the end of the half widened as the game went off to disastrous ending. We bowed out of this one on the short end of a seventy-eight to fifty-two score. The Red Devils of Chelsea proved to be a great adversary as we matched each other almost basket for basket, with our stalwarts just able to do a little better each quarter. The outcome proved to be in our favor by a margin of eighty-two to seventy- one. Bodnaruk, Caiazzo, and Romano each had nine- teen points to share the scoring honors. Once again it was our old friendly rival Somerville. and another hair raiser was to be expected. The end of the half saw us trailing by a thirty-three to twenty-seven margin. We made up the difference in the third period and then ran out of gas as the final quarter moved on. We dropped this one by a score of fifty-eight to fifty-three to make the season between the two teams a stalemate. Again it was Bodnaruk and Romano high with eighteen points each. We were determined to reverse our decision of a loss against New Bedford as we paid them a visit. The first half saw us run up a lead of ten points which was a comfortable cushion. In the third period we went flat and could score only four points from the floor. This was unheard of, but New Bed- ford was in almost as poor shape as they failed to take advantage of this and could only garner eight points from the floor. We managed to do better in the final period and get back our margin and come out on top by forty-eight to thirty-eight. Caiazzo had his eye as he dropped in eighteen points. Our next outing against Quincy was a great game for three quarters. The half saw us match baskets from start to finish as we wound up at thirty-four all. In the third quarter we fell behind by four points, but our hopes were high. Then it happened, as the final quarter proved to be our downfall. We went completely cold on both defence and offense and they simply rolled right over us. The final score was seventy-four to our fifty-nine. Bodnaruk had twenty points with Al Vagramian close behind with eighteen. We bounced back again in our game with Med- ford. This was a fine game all the way. At the half we had a four point lead. The second half found us widening this margin a little at a time and we held on to the end. Victory was ours in this one by a score of seventy-three to sixty. Romano was high with twenty-three points and Vagramian dropped in eighteen. Unlike our first game with the Beach City boys. Revere gave us a real rough evening. They matched us in every department for the first half. Vagramian kept us in the ball game with his thirteen points. We left the floor at intermission time with the score at thirty-one all. Champi dropped in two fast bas- kets at the start of the third stanza and Romano added to this with some accurate foul shooting. Our defence tightened up and we held them to nine points as we opened up a ten point spread. The final quarter reverted to the first half as once again we matched each other point for point. The final count was a victory for us by a count of sixty-two to fifty- two. Vagramian led the scorers with nineteen points closely followed by Romano with seventeen. As we go to press it is evident there will be no tourney play for us this year. We feared the lack of height and it was this obstacle that was very difficult to overcome. Our congratulations to all the squad members whether in victory or defeat. Your fighting spirit and determination will always be in your favor. It is our hope that each of you will dribble the ball of endeavor down the floor of life and sink it in the basket of success. Coach Henry Schlegel had to overcome a lack of experience and a lack of veterans to survive the season. There was plenty of willing material but he realized the necessity for more than desire. He was agreeably surprised by the end of the season. Our pre-season Jamboree game in Lynn brought the team up against a tough Peabody team, and after playing to a one to one dead lock, we felt the prospects for a fairly good season were brighter. The season ' s league opener against Revere, a veteran team, proved to be disastrous as our inex- perience showed up time and again. The Beach boys dominated the play all night and we were humbled by a score of eight to one. We faced veteran Chelsea in our underdog roll the following week. The lead see-sawed back and forth for almost the entire game with the Crimson always in the catch-up posi- tion. We went down to the final three seconds this way when suddenly Lawrence grabbed a center face- off and let drive and beat their goalie to tie it up at three all. We felt better after this game. We were the favorites against a weak Don Bosco team but they failed to believe this as we went into the third period behind by a score of three to one. Suddenly we came to life and started to pepper their goal with shots. DePrizio sank two goals on assists by Gibson and Lawrence and they in turn sank a goal each on assists from DePrizio. In the mean time they scored another goal but we managed to hang on for a five to four victory. Maiden has been nemesis to us in hockey. We just have never beaten them. This was to be first. Giu- liano got us on the boards first after an assist by Lawrence. Later DePrizio and (Gibson each drove in and lit up the light for the Crimson. Our second line of Brickley, Barry, and Nee were excellent while Bradbrook was almost invincible in the goal in our three to one win. This was a very sweet victory. Quincy is our other jinx team which has never al- lowed us to win a game from them. This condition was becoming a habit. The game proved to be a real thriller as we exchanged goals. In the third period we were behind by a score of three to two with minutes to go when Lawrence stole the puck and set sail down the boards and then fed to Gibson who sank the shot to tie up the game. Quincy captured the face off and shot but Bradbrook made the save and fed off to Gibson who ragged down the ice and passed off to Lawrence who sank a beautiful goal with seconds to go for a four to three win. Barry and Giuliano did a great job in this hair-raiser. North Quincy proved to be no obstacle as they of- fered very little in the way of defence. Every mem- ber of the squad participated in this game. Scores were made by DePrizio, Donnelly, Lawrence, Giu- liano, Clifford, and Glancy as we downed them eleven to one. Our winning streak was broken the following week by Christopher Columbus. Lawrence managed to score two quick goals to put us into a fast lead and things were looking up. Then it happened. Our defence fell apart and slowly but surely they picked away at us and got the two goals back and two more with them. We failed to score and an unhappy group went home with a four to two loss. W e started the second turn in league play the following week and we were determined to beat Revere. This was a real hard fought contest right down to the final horn. We lost by a four to two margin but the play of the Crimson was great. It would be unfair to single out any one player because of the greatness of all of them in defeat. We had a miserable letdown against Chelsea and the Red Devils took advantage of our every mistake. We were loose on defence and our offense was un- able to untrack all night long. Without a doubt this was our worst game of the season but one we could have won had we been up for it as we were the previous week. After dropping the last three games we came back to life against hapless Don Bosco. This time we were not caught napping at the start of the game as we were the last time. Nee, Barry, Brickley, Mor- ganto all showed to great advantage on defence, while Donnelly and Glancy showed gi ' eat speed on offense. DePrizio, Gibson, and Lawrence as usual shone in our ten to two win. Our return bout with Maiden was not the thriller the previous game was. We were slowed down by a sick list which prohibited our being at full strength. We played good hockey but the luck of the Torna- does was phenomenal as we were frustrated time and again. We lost by four to one. Quincy offered nothing as we scored almost at will in the first period. The light flashed on six different times. We were inclined to be a little care- less and they came out and scored three fast goals. We put a stop to this and scored one goal ourselves to defeat them seven to three. Our record was about even for the year which gives us great hope for the future with so many underclassmen. To those seniors we say good skating through life and may you each score your goal. Gouri of yionor Somewhere in the dim past, starry-eyed mothers led a group of individuals, all loved ones, off to their initial day of school. This group of pig-tailed and . white-shirted darlings were quite unaware of the ;fact that they were to be known as The Class of 66 of Everett High. It was a good thing that we were unaware of this, or this realization certainly would have either stimulated us into a double promo- - ' ' tion or caused us all to be retards. We managed to survive the lower grades and finally converged on the the A. N. Parlin Jr. High. Once here, we looked, but saw not and understood less until we had finished our eighth grade. In our freshman year at the Compound we decided we had a need for leadership to overcome our chaos. We chose Louis Apruzzese as President, Cecelia Rossi as Vice President, Allen Callender as Secre- tary, and Susan Petricca as Treasurer. We felt better about this now even though we were not able to take over the school. It was here we started our championship habits on the football field. The names of Champi, Sapienza, Pini, Russo, Walsh and others came to the front as they elected Apruzzese, Goc, and Gaffey as co- captains. Girls became completely conscious of boys even though boys were unaware of a girls ' usefulness, except to disagree with them. Our socials were truly out of this world as our chief aim was to see who could show up with the highest teased hair-do. The boys, as usual, just stood in groups and gawked. Their social attitude was a big nothing. I Our basketball team went into the Boston Garden Tournament with Champi, Romano, and Caiazzo as leaders. They, too, were champs. Our baseball team turned out to be the cream of the crop as it belted its way to victory and a champ- ionship. Our Parling P winners are too numerous to mention but we can recall how Hugh Kelleher wow- ed us in the Oratorical Contest. We grew to realize what our Class Theme, No Man Is An Island meant, as we no longer were individuals but mem- bers of a claa.s, an important cog in a big machine. Before we were aware of the passing of time, we were ready to leave what we had felt was a Com- pound with its Gestapo traffic squad. The big venture was to come ... the March of the Trium- phant across Broadway and into that most formid- able hou.se of learning, The High School. How lucky would any faculty be in having us under their wings. vdi irfrft «-C!:)j ' V- ' ass _ hopeless in that big auditorium as those dulcet tones of Principal Collins called out that from name such and such, to name such and such, would go to room such and such. Who knew where room such and such was . . . we couldn ' t even think of our own names, let alone dare to even ask where the i ooms might be. It seemed that both upper classes were absolute sadists by the enjoyment they derived from our consternation. We did manage to overcome trying to find the gym on the fourth floor and dashing wildly to the cafeteria at recess so as to get a good seat at the dining table. We sought solace and lead- ership in our old leaders, Apruzzese, Rossi, Callen- der, and a new Secretary, Donna Maria Luongo. We found we even had representation in student af- fairs and elected Petricca, Cutone, and Dooley to the Council. Out football stars added to the efforts of our team ' s G. B. I. title. During the basketball season, Romano, Caiazzo, and Champi went into the Tech Tournament with our great basketball team. Lou DiPrizio became a stella member of the hockey team. Time marched along and we adjusted to our new home and loved every minute of it. We were proud when Hugh Kelleher and Ceci Rossi won the Oratori- cal Contest. The only sad day in the whole year was when our President and friend, John F. Kennedy, was cut down by an assassin ' s bullet. This will always be the blackest day of our sophomore year. Our sophomore year seemed to be so ci-ammed that it passed before we realized that spring had come. Only after the seniors had gone and a great void was created in the school ' s tenantship did it strike us that we had overcome all our hardships and were now in the threshold of our junior year. The summer with its hot days and vacation ex- periences passed in a flash and here we were back in school. My, gosh! how young, immature, and scared those poor little sophomores look. Thank goodness we looked better than this crop. Well, we helped them survive by making life as miserable as possible for them. We elected our officers for the year and Kelleher was President with Cece Rossi again Vice President, Al Callender as Treasurer and Chris Trufant was named Secretary. One more member was added to the Council to give us Sue Petricca, Maureen Dooley, Joe Cqllins, and Bob Cut- one as respresentatives. On that first day in September we sat scared and 126 We got off to a big start by rooting our football team into an undefeated season and thus our hoot- ing and hollering was the cau.se of their being rewarded by a trip to Florida at Christmas time. Romano and company took up where they had left off in the previous basketball . Reason and wo man- aged to go into the Tech Tourney. Once again it must have been our cheering, not their playing that Scholastic Awards were justly deserved by Champi, Walsh, Goc, and Pietrantonio. We can never forget made them so great. vi l i f; ; these fellows, and all the members of the Class of Then came our Junior Prom, Through the Look- ing Glass , with Jane O ' Donnell as Chairman and her committee under the guiding hand of Mr. De- Rubeis doing a wonderful job. There was no doubt that most of the beauty and manliness of the Everett High School was to be found in the Class of ' 66. Vickie Brown as Queen was a picture of beauty. We managed to survive this and keep our heads above water scholastically for the most part for the rest of the year. It was our firm conviction that school could be made into a real attractive thing if they would cut out the learning and books. Spring rolled around and we saw our baseball team well represented by our classmates. How can anyone forget the sight of Al Callender fly ing around the track as if someone was behind him with a blow torch. I ip? ; Then we were suddenly confronted with a real stunner . Please fill out this card and state the best time for you to have pictures taken for the Yearbook. My gosh ! this must mean that we are almost seniors. We are aware that the Oratorical Contest produced winners in Joe Collins and Hugh Kelleher; but when Dave Rosenblatt received the Harvard Book Award in an assembly after gradua- tion we knew that this was it. The year was over! We were Seniors. Once again summer came and went and most of us did not realize that this was probably our last possible summer of freedom. We were older, more sophisticated, perhaps more serious but still a very happy crew as we took over the oars in this final row on the river of high school. The incoming sopho- mores did not excite us as much as they did a year ago. We saw in them, their youth, their frailness, their immaturity, and their unsophistication. It ' s a more like a seventh grade group in our eyes, rather than a tenth grade class. My what a long way we had come since the day those pigtails and white- starched shirts had clung so desperately to a doting mother ' s hand. ,i;aw . v We chose Frank Champi as our leader, to be assisted by Cece Rossi, Al Callender, and Diane Glancy. To the Council we sent Joe Collins as Chair- man, ably assisted by Sue Petricca, Jane O ' Donnell,., Sue Melagrano and Bob Cutone. ' -. J Things hummed from the start as we had our candids taken for the yearbook. There we had fun exchanging our senior pictures with our classmates. Football had another undefeated season and our team went to Florida again. The recognition of All- ' 66 who gave us so much pleasure on those Saturday afternoons. Yearbook elections and more work by the staff. College Boards, worries; job plans, worries; report cards, worries ; college applications, worries ; but we survived. Even our parents survived. Then one day came the sad news of the very sud- den death of Mr. Louis Wendelstein, Head of the Science Department. His passing is a loss that can never be measured. His long line of students passes far down the road of his forty five years of teach- ing. May our memories be a tribute to him forever. The basketball season came and went and we cer- tainly had our ins and outs. We didn ' t win a cham- pionship but we did play interesting and attractive basketball. Hi-light pictures and prophecy pictures excited us. The choosing of the Queen and her Court of ' Honor created a stir as we hoped for each un- known name to be chosen. Donna Dillon was our glamorous football Queen. i i ' iiiin-iiii. A gala night at the Sidney Hill Country Club as we more than enjoyed the Senior Ball under the chairmanship of Steve Wallace and his committee. This was a night of nights. True beauty and man- liness was evident two-fold as compared with our Junior Prom. Quickly too quickly time seemed to fly by. What had seemed to be an eternity, a goal in the far dis- tant had now become a reality. The end was in sight. Yearbooks were distributed, fingered through, dis- cussed, autographed, carried to bed with us, and then laid aside. We stood helplessly by and watched the juniors as they excitedly made reservations for their Senior pictures. They didn ' t even give us a chance to graduate before they took over. Quickly, too quickly. Class Day and all its frivolities came and went and we stayed out most of the night and had the usual number making fools of themselves. Graduation rehearsals and graduation. The termina- tion of so many friendships, so many things in com- mon, so many seconds, minutes, and hours of pleas- ure, freedom, and friends has come at last. My final gaze about me and I have passed into the stadium and sat in my final session as a Senior. The glamour seems to be lacking for us. There is a false bravado among some but there is a tear of sorrow visible and invisible on the visage of each. We hear our names called, mechanically rise, return to our seat and more than ever realize that all is now only, Memories. • â– V i ' ' TNIttMM Gfass CPropJiect SUCCESSFUL ADMINISTRATORS Paula Hosty, Richard Pesce, Judy Milley, Vicky Brown, Cathy Sigerist, Mary Ellen Spillene, Reprina Pelliter, Barbara Cocco, Louise Coviello, Christine Di Pietro, Richard Baleno, Ray Gomez, Lois Mannetta, Madeline Pesce, Ellen Rutstein, Arthur Young.
