ZUKERMAN 80 Chatham Road (Jilbert Sullivan; French Clul) W ' e know that your future as ti speech therapist will be a great surcesa. Your perso)inlity will assure you of much happiness. 98 I Coach Sarno and his assistants, Al RomboH and Bob Marques, had their work cut out for them as they rebuilt the team after the graduation of fif- teen varsity players. We opened against Newton and they were out for revenge. Champi, our quarterback, started us off with a 34 yard pass to Stevenson and we were in the scoring column. In the second period he passed to Grasso for another 37 yards and a score. Stallworth converted to make it 14 to 0. In the second half Champi again passed to Grasso for a T.D. and Stallworth converted. Late in the final period Grasso went into the end zone on a sweep to have us wind up the winner 28 to 0. An inspired North Quincy team stopped us cold for almost the entire first half and took a lead of 8 to 0. On the following kickoff Grasso went for 58 yards before being stopped and then two plays later scored from 30 yards out behind the blocking of Merenda and Stallworth. Pietrantonio converted as the half ended. As the second half started it ♦ook Grasso 31 seconds to .scoot for 52 yards be- hind Amoroso and Stevenson for another score. Later Champi completed a pass to Gras.so for a seventy yard touchdown. This was all for the day as we were the winners 22 to 8. Leo. Dodge, and Pagliuca did a great job on defense. The following week we returned to the City of Presidents to face a good Quincy team. Again we started at a slow pace and went behind 7 to 0. Af- ter con.secutive runs by Stallworth and Gras.so Pini drove into the end zone behind Yahoodik ' s I 12 savage block. Champi converted to make it 8 to 7. At the start of the second half Grasso ran for a 42 yard touchdown behind Amoroso and Merenda. Later, after forcing them to punt, we were set back to our 8 yard line and Mr. Grasso again ran for a 92 yard jaunt into the end zone. Champi pass- ed to Stevenson for the game winning conversion. Quincy came back and scored two touchdowns and came within a whisker of a tie. Their failure to convert gave us a 22 to 21 victory. Leo, Haggett, Hughes, and Pagliuca were outstanding on de- fense. Arlington and Everett ! What a day ! Rain, mud, and water hampered the play of both teams. Early in the game Stevenson grabbed a deflected kick on the Spy Ponders ' 18 yard line and we managed to tread water long enough to have Champi swim into the end zone for the only score of the game. The rest of the game was slip and slide with Grasso the only one able to make any gains. We did manage to get to their ten yard line on a pass which Stev- enson caught while sitting in a puddle. Hughes and Cintolo were right at home in the mud. The Medford Mustang bombed us at the start of the game and this aroused us. We failed to prevent a score but on the next kickoff we went to work and scored 3 touchdowns in 4 minutes. Grasso and Stallworth took turns running the ball and then Champi tossed to Stevenson for 25 yards and a score. We took the ball on downs and once again Champi tossed to Steve for 20 yards and another score. Then Grasso intercepted a pass and return- ed it for 40 yards before being caught and then Champi tossed to Pietrantonio for number three. Only one conversion, by Pietrantonio. Medford managed to score again in the third period but this was offset by a Grasso touchdown. Final score Everett 26 to 16. Somerville battled us all over the field and it wasn ' t until the half was almost over that we hit the scoring column. After a Grasso run, Champi tossed to Stevenson for 37 yards and a touchdown. Somerville controlled the ball for almost the entire third period and then moved in and scored and went out ahead 7 to 6. This seemed to be an upset in the making as the clock showed less than two minutes. Then it happened — Champi faded back and tossed a 55 yai ' d bomb to Stevenson who took it in full flight into the end zone for the winning score. This was a close 12 to 7 win. Amoroso, Mer- enda, Leo, Hughes, and Yahoodik did their usual great job. The running of Stallworth and Grasso and the pass catching of Stevenson enabled us to revenge our defeat by Nashua of last year. Champi scored twice on end sweeps, and Steve was on the receiv- ing end of a pass for another T.D. Grasso broke open the scoring on a short end run and later on an 85 yard kick return. Haggett and Pagliuca were pros on defense. Final score 34 to 8. Undefeated Maiden and Everett met before a full house. The Golden Tornado scored on the third play of the game and predominated the first period. At the start of the second period we gained control of the ball and our passing game moved us up the field. A pass to Stevenson and then one to Pietrantonio and a climax run by Grasso behind the blocking of Amoroso and Stallworth put us even and Stevenson ' s conversion put us ahead. A Haggett interception at the start of the second half followed by runs of Grasso and Stallworth gave Champi the chance to buck over. Pietrantonio con- verted. This was the end of competition by Maiden. The last period saw Grasso go for 45 yards and a score behind Leo and Merenda and later Champi passed to Stevenson for another score. Pini buck- ed over for the final score of the day as we trounc- ed them 38 to 6. Turkey Day and Chelsea ! After our humiliating defeat of last year we wanted this one badly. We roared off in nothing flat as Grasso covered 62 yards and scored on three plays. Steve converted. Chelsea went to the air and Pagliuca intercepted. Then Stallworth took off behind Stevenson and Amoroso and landed in the end zone forty yards distant. Again Chelsea passed and Sapienza inter- cepted and stepped off 25 yards and another T.D. Pietrantonio converted. Second period: Haggett intercepts and goes to their 25 yard line from where Grasso took it in on the following play. The Red Devils insisted on passing and this time it was Champi coming up with the ball. Once again Stall- worth was given the call, and once again he went like a bolt from the blue for 62 yards and T.D. number five. Again Pietrantonio converted. Chel- sea gave us passing but this proved nothing as our line smothered them. An attempted punt was smothered by. Amoroso and Yahoodik and Pag- liuca recovered for the score. The start of the sec- ond half saw Pat Hughes recover a fumble and this gave Champi a chance to toss to Stevenson for 30 yards and a score. Gibson, Dodge, and ( intolo spelled disaster to almost every attempt by Chel- sea to move. As a final gesture to Everett football. Grasso. behind the blocking of the entire senior line raced for 45 yards and a final score for out- class A Champions, The Cindarolla Team. Final score F.verett 56 - Chelsea 0. To all tho.se boys who were a part of these vic- tories goes a great deal of praise. May all your games in life be victories and may each of you be a credit to all you repivseiit in life. 115 The retirement of Mr. Putnam brought about a change in the coaching leadership of the Crimson. Mr. Ernest Pelosi was appointed to mentor the team and it was hoped that his success as Parlin coach would follow him and have us continue on the path which has been ours for many years. We had a nucleus from the Tournament team of last year and with this experience and the im- provement of our J. V. players our season should be to our advantage. Captain Ed Siudut led the team in its opening game against non-league Reading. Some of the team members had not returned from the football wars to enjoy the early practice and hence we were a little slow, but our potential was there. We enjoyed an eleven point spread at the end of the half and picked up speed in the second half and pulled away to a fifty-nine to forty-one win. Giant Ed dunked in twenty-six points. The league season saw us facing a strong Gold- en Tornado team and this proved to be a real test of our ability. Hughes, Grasso, Profenna, and Siudut played a great first half game and put us into forty-four to thirty-five lead. Maiden con- tained us in the third period but ran out of steam as we owned the basket in the final stanza. Ches- lofska played a great defensive game while Siudut came up with a big thirty-eight points in our seventy-nine to sixty-eight win. Against North Quincy we rolled to an early lead and then went completely cold in the second period with a very meager ten points. This proved to be our undoing and we were never able to come back. Although we did outscore them in the second half it was not enough and we met defeat I 16 seventy-eight to sixty-five. Siudut was again high with twenty-seven points with Cheslofska and Romano doing a great job. We closed out the year 1964 by bombing the Red Devils of Chelsea by a ninty-four to fifty score. After the first period it was no contest as we ran them off the floor. Again it was Siudut followed by Grasso and Cheslofska garnering most of the points. The year 1965 was ushered in with a spine- tingler against Somerville. The first half gave us a two point advantage as we matched baskets. Big Ed was not having a good night and the slack was taken up by Romano and Grasso. We stretched our lead to four points at the end of the third period and were in good shape. Siudut was finding his eye and all looked well. Then it hap- pened as again we went cold with a nine point quarter and they tied it up at the whistle. The overtime saw us still unable to score well and this downfall cost us our second loss by a seventy- seven to seventy-five score. The long bus ride to New Bedford tied us up a bit and we were slow to start. Our deliberate game paid off in the long run as we returned to the win column in a low-scoring fifty-four to forty-eight game. Siudut, Cheslofska, Grasso, and Profenna were standouts. The Presidents of Quincy gave us plenty of headaches for three periods. Only three points separated us at the half and this became six in our favor at the close of the three-quarter mark. Then it happened! A final thirty-four point quarter and we had devastated them by a ninty-five to seventy score. Siudut set an all-time high record with forty-four points. Munn, Grasso, Cheslofska. and Profenna were great in this win. The Medford Mustangs posed a problem as they slowed us down to a steady game. We built up a lead in the middle two periods and held on to win by a sixty-six to sixty-three score. The final game in the first half season play matched the Crimson against Revere. Again Siu- dut was tied up all night and this gave us other openings as Romano went to the front with twenty-seven points. The rest of the scoring was evenly divided in this sixty-three to fifty-seven win. Our return encounter with Maiden was almost a repeat performance. After being down by two points at the end of the first period we forged ahead and gradually built up a lead to wind up on the long side of seventy-eight to sixty-five score. Captain Siudut had twenty-seven points with Romano close behind with twenty-two. Cheslofska and Grasso were their usual fine play- makers. We went after undefeated North Quincy on their home court intent upon revenge. We went out to a seven point first period lead and then fell apart in the second period to be outscored by twelve points. The third period was a famine for us and it looked as though it was not to be our night. Suddenly Grasso and Siudut found their 83 1 17 shooting eyes and we rolled. Defensive work by Profenna and Cheslofska and point scoring by the rest of the team saw us drop in nineteen points to their nine as we pulled it out of the fire sixty-eight to sixty-five. Our return bout with Chelsea was not the shoo- in that our previous outing had been. We were slow to start and Chelsea led at the end of the period. We awoke from our state of lethargy and slowly overcame their lead and gradually moved ahead to wind up the victors sixty-one to fifty- two. We had a return revenge battle with our old friend Somerville on their court. The first half decided nothing as we wound up in a thirty-six-all deadlock. We had a good third period and led by six points as we went into the final quarter. We almost matched them point for point and held on to win by a sixty-seven to sixty-three margin. Siudut was tremendous as he controlled the boards and dropped in thirty-eight points. We poured it on to New Bedford in the first period and then relaxed for two periods. The final period saw us pick up speed again and come out on top by a seventy-three to sixty-five score. Siudut was high with thirty points followed by Romano with nineteen and Grasso with sixteen. The return game with Quincy proved to be very interesting for the first period as they matched us basket for basket. However, we started to click in the second quarter and pulled away to a five point lead. We ran this lead up to thirteen points at the three-quarter mark and then slumped off in the final stanza. The outcome was seventy-four to sixty-five. Siudut continued his scoring ability wth a total of twenty-five points while Grasso dropped in eleven. Cheslofska had a hot hand on both offense and defense as did Bill Profenna. The Medford Mustangs gave us competition for one period and then the roof fell in on them. We had a thirty-three point second period and bombed out a fifty-four to thirty-two lead at the end of the half. We picked up where we had left off before the rest period and outscored them by almost a two to one margin. This proved to be our highest scoring game of the season as the final count was one hundred seven to sixty-eight. Ed Siudut proved he was great once again as he scored an even forty points. Grasso. Romano, and Champi all were in double figures. We are assured of tournament play at this time and feel that we can go a long way if the team plays to its best ability. Time does not per- mit the coverage of the tournament inasnuich as the book must go to press. Congratulations are in order for AU-American and All-Scholastic Captain Ed Siudut. His leader- ship and play has been a great inspiration to the whole team. To all the seniors we say thanks for the many interesting and fun-filled nights of victories and a few defeats in their years of competition. We hope your future brings baskets of health, wealth, and happiness and that you never have a foul called on vou. I 18 Coach Henry Schlegel had a pleasing smile on his face as he hopefully gazed at his returning veterans. He felt the team would be fairly good and in this he was not to be disappointed. He knew that his weakness might lie in the fact that his goalies were inexperienced. We opened against old rival Christopher Colum- bus and had a few rough spots during the night. This was due in part to the fact that a few mem- bers of the team were delayed in starting practice after football season. Captain Steve Dunn set a fine example as he played a fine game and seemed to be a steadying factor. Our first score came when Mike Merenda sailed in after a perfect pass from Dave Lawrence and back-handed it into the net. Columbus came right back and tied the game up. Late in the game Lou DePrizio drove down the ice with Fran Stevenson and took his pass and s lapped it in for our winning goal. We returned to do battle with the Beach City boys of Revere and never seemed able to get started in true style. We managed to score one goal on a fine play by Steve Dunn on a power play with Stevenson and DePrizio in on the assists. From here on the night was long and dark as they proceeded to sink five goals and send us down to our first defeat of the season. The Red Devils of Chelsea came up with a pretty fair team this season and had hopes of finishing well up in the league. We matched play with them all night long and neither team was able to score as we woumi uj) in a scoreless tie. Don Bosco has always had a pretty fair team and has been a steady rival but this year they lacked experience and players. We had little diffi- culty in downing them by a big eight to two score. Goals were scored by Merenda, H. Lawrence, 120 Stevenson, DePrizio, T. Gibson, and Fred Gibson who performed the Hat Trick with three goals. Assists were by H. Lawrence with three, Merenda with two and Stevenson and Dunn with one each. We ran into nothing but miserable luck against Maiden .Miracle-stops by their goalie saved the night for them as we were downed in a very close game by a three to two score. Mike Merenda and Eddie Amoroso managed to score on assists by Lawrence and Fred Gibson. Everything we did against North Quincy was right. It seemed for a while that whenever we had the puck the red light would flare up in their goal. T. Gibson set a new record with five goals and two assists. The rest of the scoring was by Merenda, H. Lawrence, D. Lawrence, Stevenson with two, Clifford, and Dunn. Assists by Meren- da, H. Lawrence two, Stevenson, Dunn three, F. Gibson, and Amoroso. Without a doubt we put on our greatest performance of the year inas- much as North Quincy was not considered to be a weak team. The final score was twelve to two. We reversed our form the following week against Quincy and for a while it looked as though we couldn ' t get a goal if they were giving them away. We would go just so far in our attack and then we would run into difficulty and lose the puck. Frank Stevenson scored our lone goal on an assist by Lawrence. This was not enough to over- come their two goal lead as we went down to de- feat. Our return game with Columbus saw them revenge their defeat of the early season and take home the win by a two to one margin. Again we were out-lucked and turned back time and time again. We had one concerted effort when T. Gib- son flew down the ice and passed to F. Gibson who inturn dropped a pretty pass into the stroke of Mike Merenda who drove it in for our lone goal. Columbus in the meantime had come up with two goals to beat us by a two to one margin. We had lost Stevenson for this game with a bad shoulder injury. Revere came back at us with just as much strength as they had in the first game and we suffered our second shutout of the season. Once again it was a case of going just so far and not being able to penetrate for the necessary shots to give us a score. This one was hard to take as they come up with a four to nothing win. We bombed back the following week against Don Bosco in no uncertain terms. Another record was set by H. Lawrence as he come up with six assists and two goals. Lou DePrizio managed to score twice and have two assists, while Fred Gibson banged in four goals for a fine night ' s work. Other goals were by Guiliano and T. Gib- son with assists going to Clifford, Nee, and Amoroso with two. The season has been worthwhile even though it had its disappointments. We felt that there were games lost that we could have won with a little luck going our way. To those seniors who have done so well we hope they will skate their way through life and carry with them the realization that victories are wonderful but we do learn a lesson in defeat which may be more beneficial in making our way to the final whistle of life. ■.21 Pat Hughes Frank Stevenson EAR BENDERS— LARYNX ATHLETES Val Green, Diane Listen, Jeanne Speranza, Gerald Auger, Dennis Bradshaw, Michael Ferguson, Renzo Donadia, Jo-Anne Renda, Carol Feraco, Eileen Hiscock, Shirley Covino, Donna Reed, Donna Melvin. I 34 Gfass J£ ' s or seemed that each had been hurt on a more personal basis. Each and everyone of us offered up a silent prayer for this man who was so symbolic of youth. Everyday life went on and we spent many an en- joyable evening rooting our basketball team into the Tech Tournament, and froze our feet at the hockey games in the Boston Arena. Our clubs meant a great deal more to us as we played a more prom- inent part in them. Then came the night of nights, our first Junior Prom. This was the first real formal for most of us and it was truly Some Enchanted Evening. Gloria Cannatelli and her committe worked diligently to make this the best Junior Prom ever, and they were not disappointed. Tim Carroll was our King and the glamorous Etta Thompson was our Queen. Each boy and girl was a King and Queen is his and her own right and it was truly great to see so much manhood and beauty gathered in the gym. j ' v v ' The baseball season showed the pitching ability of Jack McGonagle and track brought out the run- ning ability of Savage and Hussey. The winners of the Oratorical Contest were Adrienne Stavis and John MacDonald with Adrienne the big winner of the day. Time was flying, as we soon realized, when it was time to make our appointment cards for our yearbook pictures. Then there seemed to be a lull in overcrowded corrodors and we realized the seniors were gone. Bill Munn received the Harvard Book award in the final assembly, and then it was all over. jj llJ; Our final summer to enjoy saw us having our pictures taken for the yearbook. September and our final year. We were dignified seniors now with a certain austerity to uphold. We were kindly, gener- ous, and thoughtful as we misdirected the poor lost souls, the sophomores. Gee but the kids coming into this school certainly look younger and smaller! Gerry Grasso was re-elected President and the of- ficers to serve with him were Pat Hughes, Fran O ' Leary and Gloria Cannatelli. Elaine Sullivan serv- ed as Chairman of the Council with the assistance of Eddie Amoroso, Linda Baldassarre, Frank Stev- enson, Valarie Green, and June McPhee. We were all-powerful. Then came the yearbook elections and Pat Hughes was elected Editor-in-Chief with a staff of able assistants. This year our football team was undefeated Champion of Class A and enjoyed a wonderful trip to Florida. Our seniors certainly gave us plenty to root about. Grasso, Hughes, and Stevenson were named to All-Scholastic teams. Then followed the basketball season and we yelled ourselves hoarse. Ed Siudut became the first Everett player to ever score over a thousand points in his career. We went into the tournament and conducted ourselves in a credible manner. We were saddened by the sudden death of Mr. DiGiacomo, former assistant basket- ball coach and teacher of Social Studies. We took college Boards and studied, took part in clubs and studied, enjoyed plays and studied and managed to survive. We can ' t forget those field trips with the Prep Club and the vast amount of information we gained. Then there was Junior Achievement and the future moguls and tycoons had a chance to perform. Dick Hussey led the track team while Paul Savage led the first cross country team. Baseball Captain Jack MacGonagle and Co-Captain Carmen DellaPiana put on a great show for us to enjoy. In the meantime Henrietta Giso was named Yearbook Queen and Carol Contilli Football Queen. For some reason there was a strange feeling of restlessness which seemed to permeate the entire class. People worried about getting into college, others worried about a job and what the future held for them, and others worried because they were not worrying. S S S ff That wioe-e asopfiomore of two years ago became a thing of the past. The kid with the peach fuzz on his face was now a proud owner of a razor. The immature little girl quite overcome with her glamor had become a very sophisticated young lady. Could this be our class! wSB Then came our final gala event. The Senior Ball. This will always remain in our memories as the out- standing social event of our high school life. Gerry Pagliuca and his committee prepared a wonderful evening for us which saw us dining and dancing until five in the morning at the Sidney Hilt Country Club. Spring vacation came and went and we knew the end was in sight. We had our final fling at fun and frolic when Class Day was held and then came that final day of Graduation. Now that it is here we wish it were otherwise. We glance about and see the faces of our classmates as the look of wonder about where the years have gone obsess them. How long have we been together? — one- three- four- twelve years. This is the end. How can this be so? We have lived to- gether, studied together, played together, fought together, eaten together, laughed together, cried together and now it is all over. The parting of the ways. Each to go his own way and to lead his own life. Some to meet again and some never to meet again. There is saddness in our parting, but this is life. We must take the bitter with the sweet and realize we are better persons for having known each other. No matter where we go, we are one. One in spirit, one in glory; one in success, one in failure. Never shall our ensign, symbol of The Class of ' 65, be low ered in disgrace. We bid farewell to Alma Mater and thank her for her many gifts. We thank God for His blessings and for His protection in the past and pray that He will guide us in the future. To each and every member we wish joy, happiness, and success. Let us hope that some day we may meet again and bring back — MEMORIES.
