A CTIVITIES Lyceum Library Staff Choral Arts 5 Dramatic Club Seniors Juniors National Thespian Society Coach Moody Sarno and his assistants worked hard to put together a formidable team to represent us and to strive for another championship. Co-captains Hearn and Jannino led our stalwarts against a heavily favored Newton eleven in our opener and we proceeded to fool the experts by clobbering the Tigers by a score of 20 to 8. Tatarouns scored the first 2 touchdowns on short plunges after Egan and Grasso had taken turns in moving the ball in close. Later in the game Tat faked a handofT and made it 3 for the day from 14 yards out. Our only 2 point conversion came on a pass to Barbaro. Roccia, Persuitte, Mastone, and Barbaro were towers of strength in the line. Next the Presidents of Quincy fell before us by a score of 26 to 0. Banicwicz tore huge holes for Hickey, Egan, and Grasso to romp through all day. Grasso went for a 76 yard jaunt for the first score and later Tat rolled out behind Roccia for another. In the second half Big John Pellicio pounced on a fumble and we were off again. Grasso scored on a 17 yard run and this was climaxed by another T.D. by Egan in the final period. We converted only once on a Tat to Jannino pass. We owed Arlington a little debt from the past 2 years and we paid off. Early in the game Hawkeye Barbaro pounced on a Spy Pond fumble on their 18 yard line and in no time Egan slanted off tackle for the score. Tat passed to Jannino for 2 more points for the conversion. Our line put on a great show on defense and it was nip- and-tuck for the rest of the day. Late in the game we went on another drive with Egan and Grasso moving and Tat finally scoring. We were elated with our 14 to 0 win. The Medford game was hailed as the battle of the undefeated. The first half was a nightmare. The Mus- tang ' s total yardage was minus while ours was in the 3 figures, but no score. We came out for the second half and went to work at once. Grasso ran a punt back to their 34 yard line and Egan and Hickey drove to the 5 and Tat took it in. Hickey followed this with a pass interception and scooted for 60 yards and number 2 T.D. Then Grasso took over and went for 2 more scores on runs of 14 and 55 yards. Grasso also passed to Stevenson for 1 conversion and to Barbaro for an- other. This was it and we were victors 28 to 0. Against Somerville we were off to a fast start as we rolled up 20 points. First Tat passed to Grasso and he went in from 30 yards out. Then Somerville came right back with a score. After the next kickoff Egan went to the fifty, Tat faked a handoff and behind the 2 Dwarfs Persuitte and Pellicio he went all the way for T.D. number 2. Somerville tried to come back but Hickey put a stop to this on a pass interception and an 89 yard romp for another score. Barbaro converted on a pass from Tat. The second half was much more a defensive game even through both teams scored once. Grasso scored ours on a pretty 30 yard run. This gave us another win by a 2 6to 14 margin. Nashua pushed us from the undefeated ranks in no uncertain terms as they outrushed us, outpassed us, and outscored us. There was no doubt that they were the better team as witnessed by our 20 to 6 loss. We came back to the win column against our old rival Maiden even though we almost fumbled it away. We started like a streak by taking the opening kickoff and moving to the 2 yard line and then fumbling. On the return punt we again moved in and Tat finally bulled his way in for the score. Grasso passed to Ste- venson for conversion. In the final period Grasso ran a punt back for 57 yards and another score. The Golden Tornado came back with a score of their own but all too late. Once again we tasted victory 14 to 8. Thanksgiving and indigestion! The cause of it all- CHELSEA! Even though we left the field at the half with an 8 point lead there was something in the air that spelled disaster. Then it happened, they passed and passed and passed. Constantly the Red Devils took the ball from us. When the smoke of battle had cleared we found ourselves on the short end of a 20 to 8 score. Successes and failures are not measured on the field of sports. We learn and profit by our errors. If we do this we face life with a determination to overcome our ups and downs and to succeed. 116 Coach Putnam had high hopes that the Crimson and Blue would have a pretty fair basketball team. It was a forgone conclusion that we would be in need of height but that this handicap could be overcome by our hustle and experience. Co-captains DiNanno and Gianatassio led their co- horts into battle against a rangy and aggressive Reading High School in the pre-league opener. We ironed out a few difficulties, made a few mistakes, and emerged vic- torious by a 56 to 50 margin. The shooting of Siudot, Barringer, and Gianatassio was very pleasing to our sight as was the fine defensive work of DiNanno, Mo- trone, and Cunningham. We opened the league season against Revere and the Beach City boys posed no problem. This game proved to be a shoo-in for us as we could do nothing wrong. The bench was cleared and every player participated in the scoring as we ran off 101 points to their 71. This is the first time in the history of Everett basketball that we have hit the one hundred point mark. Even though Gianatassio and Siudot led the scorers, it would be unfair to say any one or two players were outstanding. We ran up against a real tough nut in the Golden Tornado of Maiden. The first period saw us get otT to a fair start and lead them at the end of the period by four points only to see this dwindle to one at the end of the half. The start of the second half was nip-and-tuck and then things wont awry as we couldn ' t get a point if they were selling them at the door. At the three quarter mark we were down by two points and then the roof fell in and they blasted us. The linal count was 83 to 74. Again it was Siudot and Gianatassio tiring the heavy guns for our side. Against a mediocre North Ouincy team we fell com- pletely apart. This was, without a doubt, the worst game wc played all season. The shining light and rc- deeming feature of the whole night was the great play and hustle of Dan Cunningham who tried desperately to shake us from our state of lethargy, but to no avail. We dropped this one by a score of 67 to 48. The Chelsea Red Devils were on the receiving end of our pent-up feelings over the loss of the last two games and we proceeded to bop them to the tune of 82 to 49. Siudot managed to get his eye back and drop in 23 points. Monahan and Motroni were outstanding in their defensive play. Old rival Somerville was our opponent for the New Year celebration in their home gym. We spoiled the whole night for them as we went at top speed all night and stayed ahead to the end. Di Nanno was outstanding on defense while Siudot showed the way with 39 points in our 77 to 74 victory. This was the most interesting game of the season to date. Winless Lowell was a pitiless sight as our bench was again cleared from almost the start of the game. Siudot had 38 points before he was removed from the game as were DiNanno and Gianatassio who had 1 1 and 25 points respectively. The entire squad participated in the scoring in this 1 10 to 49 win. Again an Everett record was set with our going over the century mark. It was a good thing for us that we got off to a flying start in our next outing against Quincy or we would have been weepin g over our third loss. Our edge was so great in the first period that even after being outscored by them in the next two we were able to hold them off through the final and emerge victors 73 to 65. Giannino was a knockout in this game as he put on a great performance and showed exceptional headwork under the basket. Barringer, Siudot, and Gianatassio took the scoring honors. The Medford game proved to be a romp as we played a very deliberate game and managed to control the ball most of the time. Motroni and Rogers showed great ability in their passing game. Siudot rang down the curtain on the first half season by garnering 33 points for his night ' s work. For our first game in second round league play, Re- vere was found to be of about the same calibre as before other than a slight tightening of defense. Both Siudot and Barringer were in the twenties for this game as we again cleared the bench. Captain Bob DiNanno came up with a bad ankle in this game which put him on crutches for awhile. The return match with Maiden was a real hair-raiser from start to finish. We matched baskets for the entire first quarter and through the second quarter as the half ended in a tie. The fans were hanging on to their seats, hats, and anything that would hold them down by the end of the third period as this showed us with a one point deficit. Then we came out rolling and cut this lead and forged ahead. We were masters right up to the last two minutes, when on two steals and three fast baskets they pulled it out in the final seconds by a 72-70 mar- gin. Each player was a star in his own right. We learned a great deal from our first loss to North Ouincy and decided to do something about it. We went ahead from the start and from here on it was straight sailing as we dropped them by an 85-65 score. Grasso, Motroni, and Old Eagle Eye Suidot were our stars. Chelsea tried hard to make a game of it but this lasted only one period. We hopped on them at the start of the second period and after this it was all over for them. Morrison spelled Siudot at center and gave a great exhibition and proved that he had the situation well in hand. Motroni, Grasso, and Monahan all did a fine job in our 86-64 win. Somerville came to visit us for the next game and we proved to be very poor hosts as we downed them by a 78-69 score. This was not the hair-raiser the previous game was. Again it was Siudot, Barringer, and Giana- tassio doing the scoring for our side. The Lowell game saw the return of Bob DiNanno to the fold after his injury. Bob Giannino gave a good account of himself with a hot hand under the basket and from outside as well. Rogers, Cunningham, Mona- han, and Morrison carried the burden in this 77-52 victory. We continued in high gear against the Presidents of Ouincy and made certain of our invitation to partici- pate in the Tech Tourney by downing them by a score of 80-43. We were in the game for the win and at no time did we lapse into a careless playing attitude. We found out what could happen to us in the first game with this team when they almost beat us, and this was not going to happen again. Siudot continued his great scoring performance and left no doubt that he will be the all-time scoring champion of the school. DiNanno was back in good form and showed he had lost little of his touch after his injury. Our season closed out against Medford and the old Mustang almost kicked over the traces and upset us. Perhaps it was the natural letdown and we were resting on our laurels which caused this near-catastrophe. We missed more free-throws than we managed to toss in, and the whole evening was a nightmare at times. We did manage to maintain a slight margin all the way and win it by a 69-64 margin. Tournament results are not available here due to the lateness of play in the season. Our sincere thanks to Mr. Putnam and Mr. DeGia- como our coaches for a job well done as usual. You have helped make many a cold and dreary winter ' s night a pleasant anti cheery one by the warmth of our classmates ' performances. To all the members of the squad and especially our senior classmates who have been so great in victory and defeat, wc say, You ' re wonderful. It is our sincere hope that your futures have as few upsets as this season has had losses and that your paths down life ' s highway be paved with baskets of success. 120 Coach Schlegel was not too optimistic about the out- look for the season. A lack of depth and size would be great obstacles to overcome. Our initial start against a fair North Ouincy team gave us a good chance to experiment and to try to tind the best combinations. At times we showed great prom- ise and then we would suddenly go flat. Dooley scored once on a pass from Henrickson and this was followed by good individual efforts and goals by Stevenson and Merenda. The final whistle saw us on top three to one. Christopher Columbus was our next opponent and we were unable to get out of our tracks all night. They managed to get off to a fast two goal lead and from here in everything wc did went awry. We suffered a shutout by a three to nothing score. We came back in great fashion against a good Re- vere team. Merenda and Dunn broke the game wide open in the first minute of play with a goal each. From here on wc played great defensive hockey and at the same time went out and added to our score. Gaff and Dooley each managed to score a goal and gave us a total of four to their one. We dominated the ice all night against our old friend Chelse a. Egan, DiPerri. Dooley. and Mcrciuia scored early in the game (or us and Galf came tliroiigii with an additional one in the last period to make it live to one in our favor. Don Bosco offered very little opposition as we opened up with a five goal onslaught in the first two periods. Henrickson managed to get his first goal of the year after being frustrated time and again previous to this game. Egan, Gaff, Merenda, DiPerri, Dooley, and Dunn added to the thrill of our first shutout by seven to nothing. We lost a heartbreaker to Maiden the following week. The Tornadoe went ahead to a two point lead in the first period before we woke up and setded down. Gradually we overcame this deficit as the game went on. First Stevenson went down and scored on a solo and then DiPerri tied it up just with minutes to go. With three seconds remaining Maiden let drive with a des- peration shot wide of our goal, however, it was de- flected into the goal and we lost three to two. How about that. To date we have blown hot and cold in the opening period and this has been our greatest handicap. It was the same old story against Quincy as they got off to a fast three goals. From here on they sat back and rested as we tired ourselves out trying to score. Merenda did manage to break the ice and give us one goal to their three. Again against Columbus we were two goals behind before the period was over. We struggled along and played good hockey but DiPerri ' s goal was not enough to get us out of the red. In our return game with Revere they did an about face and beat us. The same old first period jinx contin- ued on our trail as they came up with two quickies. Merenda was our shining light with two goals in our three to two defeat. We belted North Quincy in our return go and we could do nothing wrong. If the rest of the season had been this way we have been undefeated. DiPerri and Stevenson had three goals each while Dooley garnered one in our seven to nothing shut-out. As we go to press the season is not quite at an end but we feel that we should split even for the season in games lost and won. It is difficult to single out any one boy who was a standout as each contributed a great deal to his team whether winning or losing. We do well when we consider the handicaps which prevail for the boys to practice. This is overcome by the satisfaction of participation and the feeling of achieve- ment in knowing that each has done his best. May you all have smooth ice for your skate through life. 4 fi DonHearn Charlie Corricelli Dan Cunningham Fred Abbruzzese John Mc Adam Bob DiNanno Mike Porcaro Bob Davis Jim Kowalsky Paul Cirino Ron Persuitte Mike Roccia Anthony Barbaro Bill Mar sch e Luccia Bill Rces John Pellicio Gary Garbati 124 Bob Jannino Dennis Baniewicz 125 127 Senior Homeroom Presidents Class day Usher and Usherettes HARVARD BOOK AWARD Charles DiSabatino FOOTBALL QUEEN Jeanne Romanelli ' A ORATATORICAL WINNERS Sheila Azores and Donna Leo QUEEN OF THE JUNIOR PROM Maryann DiBattista ELKS FIDELITY AWARD Spencer White and Donna Leo GOOD GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE Patricia Yamello Senior Ball 130 Committee SCIENCE FA D 132 ' ' ' v f, Class Prophecy Any resemblance between your future and the one predicted by us is strictly up to you. Class To say that the Class of ' 64 was great would be daring on our part, rather let us say that we were consistant and that our potential was great. As politi- cians, we had no platform. As for progress, we ac- cepted what was offered without too much enthusiasm or too much dismay. For the most part we were con- formists and respected the wisdom and judgement of those in charge. Let us go back a few years and recall the days and weeks now but moments in our lives. Do you remember the humble serenity of the confines of the Albert N. Parlin? How vivid are the images of our beloved faculty as they strove with such diligence to prove to us the necessity of memorizing Character . Chuckie Mon- ahan was our leader and was a shining light in his attempts to remove us from our lethargic state and make us realize the great necessity for school spirit. We had spirit and it came to the fore. Remember those great undefeated teams in athletics? Who do you think rooted them on to glory! Why we can even recall those wonderful afternoon socials where girls danced with girls and boys came for the food, or wished they hadn ' t come at all. It was here that girls began to tolerate boys for some vague reason. Then too, boys no longer threw stones at the girls but rather gave serious consideration to just plain hair pulling or insulting words of wisdom. We were growing up and we did join clubs, the band, the orchestra, and to a variety of groups including the detention room. It seems only yesterday that Linda Reynolds won the Prize Speaking Contest with the ren- dition of her own original piece. Then came the pre- sentation of the coverted Parlin P to twenty four of our classmates. Donna Leo, Judy Dcrsofi, Anthony Sordillo, and Spencer White each received special awards before we took our leave. Then came the fateful day when our teachers opened wide the doors, and with a great deal of weeping (for joy), started us on our trek across the barren waste- lands of Broadway and into the compound of our now beloved Alma Mater. With fear and trepidation we took our places among the mighty uppcrclassmen. Little did we realize how conspicuous we were in our freshly acquired gawkincss. Wc overcame many of our shortcomings and became a part of this great organization. Once again we chose Chuck to lead us. He was aided by Connie Cclla, Donna I.co, and Janice Parella. We sent Sandy Pct- ricca. Bob DiNanno, and Joe Olivcri to represent us on the Council. They didn ' t do much but their presence was enough to make the uppcrclassmen tremble and respect us. We went to dances AT NIGHT, joined clubs, cheered our heads off at football and basketball games and enjoyed life in full. In the meantime our parents did spoil the fun by insisting that we study now and then. We rooted our football team into the Class A Championship and sent them to play in the Sugar Bowl in Florida. Time seemed to fly along as we noted the great upsurge in the accomplishments of the high school since our arrival. By the time we discovered there was no fourth floor. Donna Leo and Marcia Azores had won the Oratorical Contest. For some reason shortly thereafter the building became quiet and was not as crowded. Upon serious investigation we discovered the seniors had left. Too bad, there were some pretty good kids there. Wait — this must mean that we are Juniors! Goodness what a shock. The summer passed and we returned quite at ease. Gee, did we look as small and as stupid as these little sophomores? But we got back to our normal way of life. We even found out that we had free filing, some- thing we were too busy to notice last year. Then too some little sophomore let us know that we could ac- tually go outdoors for recess. How about that! The strangest things happen in a year. Again we said, ' Chuckie ' , we need you for our loader , and so it came to be. Bob DiNanno, Donna Leo, and Pete Dolan oc- cupied the other chairs. Our Council members were: Diane Baldassarre, Frank Gianatassio, John McAdam, and Sandy Petricca. They didn ' t do any more than last year ' s group but at least we were one more in numbers. Once again it was football games, study, basketball games, study, dances, study, clubs, study. School would be great except for the studies. Once again we captured the Class A Football Championship and this time the squad had a wonderful trip to Washington. There seemed to be much more orderliness in the school now that we were Juniors. Time went along as that most Heavenly night of the Junior Prom came along. Wo never truly thanked the committee for the wonderful time had by all. Maryann DiBatista was our Oueen and Richie Egan was King. How different we all looked as we promenaded in our first formal attire. We never appreciated the real beauty and manliness so abundant in our class. In the meantime school went on. No fires, no bomb scares, no days olT, no strikes — nothing to disconcert us and to lead us from the paths of learning. 138 p
