How vivid and yet so remote seem the happenings of yesteryear which crowned our youth with the joys of a yvorry-free existence, and placed in our hands the scep- tre of learning. We started our trek at the Parlin Junior High School. The school was dealt a severe blow when we were sad- dened by the untimely death of our beloved principal, Mr. James J. Mullen. Officers were elected in the per- sons of Richard Rizzo, President; Chuckie Olson, Vice President; James Smith, Secretary; and Vinnie LoCon- te, Treasurer. With these stalwarts to lead us, we felt that our trials and tribulations were over; but we were soon to realize that the Recess Club was just as popu- lar as ever, as were the Gestapo methods of the traf- fic squad. How we hated that loathsome group who were ever-present when any one of us did the wrong thing at the right time. We had barrels of fun at our afternoon socials, where the boys were as timid as mice and the girls played at being coy. We enjoyed our first real football, basketball and baseball teams, and here we saw the makings of future stars. Tho se who were outstanding in the field of citizen- ship were Jackie Lawrence as recipient of the Elks Fi- delity Award; Richie Rizzo and Ann Marie Haner re- ceived the Carl Stein Award; Sandy Astuti and Richie Rizzo, the Rotary Award; Susan Clay, the Kiwanis Award; and Barbara Richardson was the winner of the Public Speaking Award. The final honor went to Richie Rizzo who garnered the James J. Mullen Speaking Award. Many of our fellow classmates were winners of the coveted Parlin P . In September of 1959, with curiosity and trembling knees, we entered the confines of Everett High School. Remember how awe-stricken we were when first we saw the nonchalant manner in which the upper class- men conducted themselves. Wow, we could even talk in line and not get clobbered . This was heaven! Then things began to happen. We strayed, we became lost, we were all mixed up and received no help from any- one. The third floor for the gym, the time spent in search of an elevator. How we longed for the old home across the street. But we gradually came into our own. Our elections came up and this time we chose Fred Forcstcire as President; Paul lossa. Vice President; Jackie Lawrence, Secretary; and Janice Mastrocola as Treasurer. Scotty Taylor, Billy Locke, and Vin LoCon- te represented the class on the gridiron, while Frank Nigro showed the way in basketball, when we were the Tech Tourney winners. Let ' s not forget the very fine representation we had in the persons of Roscannc Siracusa, Sandy Barbati and Donna Dannenburg; all elected to the Student Council. I he time seemed to fly and we found tlie year drawing to a close as Sandy Astuti and Cynthia Mar- shall won the Oratorical Contest. September again and this time we were dignified juniors. Now it was our turn to laugh and ridicule the poor sophomores. We started off with a bang by having a fire in the school which gave us a free day. This year we chose as our leaders Scott Taylor, President; Chuckie Olsen, Vice President; Florence Parham, Sec- retary; and John Frassica, Treasurer. We sent very able representatives to the Council by electing Sandy Astuti, Donna Dannenburg, Steve Sutera, and Rosalie Squillaciotti. This too was the year of the Cafeteria Strike where, in a very orderly fashion, we were able to per- suade the administration we should be allowed to leave the premises at recess. This was a big step and we showed our appreciation by living up to all we agreed to. Our big affair this year was our Junior Prom which was called La Primavera . Amid the pageantry of a wonderfully transformed gymnasium, the true beauty of the Class of Sixty Two came into its own. Devastat- ing young ladies, never noticed before, promenading on the arms of sedate young gentlemen was a sight never to be forgotten. We chose for our Queen of the Prom, Betty Indelicato. Our Athletic teams were all represented in fine style and at the close of each season we saw captains elect- ed in each sport. Again it was spring and all eyes turned toward the passing of the seniors so that we might fit into their shoes. Florence Parham and Sandy Astuti were the Oratorical winners. May and June and we were Seniors. This is our year. Scott Taylor was our President, Co- Captain of football, and Editor-in-Chief of the year- book. Chuckie Olsen was our Vice President and Cap- tain of Baseball, Florence Parham was elected Secre- tary, and John Frassica, Treasurer. Steve Sutera led the Council with the able assistance of Sandy Astuti, Don- na Dannenburg, Rosalie Squillaciotti, and Richie Riz- zo. Remember our undefeated football season and their wonderful loss to a lucky Miami team in Florida. How proud we shall always be of our team of 1961. The Basketball and Hockey seasons seemed to sneak up and pass away all too soon. The Oueen of the Year- book was chosen and time was truly speeding. If we could just but stop and go back and relive a few of these treasured moments. The Senior Ball, and we knew the end was near at hand. Class Day and Gradu- ation, the end of the road. Individually and collectively we have memories to be treasured forever, some good and some bad but, to all is the realization that all will go through life with us forever. 14 Presenting Seniors on Parade In Memoriam MONDREA G. Line: Wilcox, Locke, Agnetta, Driscoll, Williams, Pizzuto, Taylor, and Nigro. The Season Under the guidance of Head Coach Moody Sarno and his able assistants Ed Leo and Albie Romboli, the Everett High football team brought fame and glory to not only the school but to the entire New England States. Under the able leadership of Scotty Taylor and Vinnie LoConte, we were the co-holders of the State Class A Championship and represented our section of the country in the Orange Bowl in Florida. We opened our season against a fair Newton eleven and routed them by a score of 22-8. We feared this game because of the inability of Vinnie LoConte to participate, as well as our great triple threat, Bobby Leo. We were very pleasantly surprised by the great work of Al Helein and Ed Dimond who so ably filled their shoes. The following week, at full strength again, we ran roughshod over a hapless Weymouth team to the tune of 32-0. Taylor, Locke, Nigro, and Don WiUiams showed up in grand style. Ouincy had been double-trouble to us in the past few years but not so this time. We continued our march down the victory-trail with a one-sided 38-0 win. Vin LoConte steadied our great junior backfield and they ran like scared rabbits all day. 109 Our first big challenge was against a great Arling- ton team. We matched them in line play all day long and it was a nip and tuck affair right down to the wire. The final outcome was a 6-6 tie. The following week we bounced right back and watched Battering Bobby Leo rip Medford apart single handed by a score of 44-14. Again we saw Driscoll, Locke, Taylor, and Nigro play a great game. Somerville offered little opposition as we rolled over them 50-6. Coach Sarno cleared the bench but we just kept rolling along. Nashua almost made it a sad day for us as they caught us sound asleep in the first half and we left the field on the short end of a 14-8 score. In the second half we came into our own as Len Cannatelli caught fire and jaunted all over the field. Fred Foresteire was a bul- wark on defense as he revived the boys and they came out on top 28-14. Our old rival Maiden was our next victim and once again we emerged on the long end by a score of 28-6. Our entire team was outstanding and to single out any one boy would be diflficult. On Thanksgiving Day we met our ancient rival Chel- sea. They were in the same position we had been against them on other occasions and they could ruin our season. They were not so fortunate as we had been in the past and did not succeed. Chelsea played an in- spired game but we were able to withstand their best and emerge victorious 28-14. This was the first undefeated season since the great team of 1945 and it was most welcome. By virtue of this honor, we were invited to play against a great Miami Senior High team of Miami, Florida, in the Orange Bowl on December 7. We accepted this honor and set our hearts on a win. For about a week before the game the trek to Flor- ida began by plane, bus, and car, and we managed to have about 2000 rabid fans screeching their heads off for an Everett win. We were not given an outside chance and it was only a question of how early and often Miami would score. Someone had forgotten to tell these prophets to look at the records of Everett High School. It has never mattered much as to what the cause may be, whether sports or any challenge of life. This was Everett High with the heritage of a great undaunted spirit to do or die. We lost this game by a one point margin in a ques- tionable manner, but our heads were unbowed. Even our hosts and friends from Florida were on their feet and cheering for the Crimson Horde from the North. Time and time again their big burly backs were dumped for losses by our comparatively miniature linemen, only to get stopped in our efforts with disas- trous penalties. However, many were the frustrated sport writers who had to eat their words as to our abil- ity to play football. It is difficult to pass off the season without the recog- nition of certain stars who performed in an outstanding manner during the season. It is our contention that our backs were stars because our line made them stars, and our line was good because our backs made them good; therefore our hats are off to each and every member of the squad of 61 for their stellar perform- ance. To our coaching staff, to the managers, and to all who made this such a wonderful season, we give you our thanks for a job well done. You have brought cred- it to yourselves, your families, your school, your city, and your state. To all the seniors we say so-long. May your futures be as bright as your playing days and may you be crowned with victories in all your future endeavors. The i96i Scluad The Season The lack of experience, a grave shortage of height, and the unsmiling face of Dame Fortune all aided in the downfall of the mighty basketball power of our Alma Mater. This was not our year, as was easily seen. The excitement and glamour of the great tournament teams of the past few years became just a thing of the past. Our fall was by no means a measurement of a lack of spirit on the part of the boys and coaches, but rather simply the cycle of fortune which turns periodi- cally. In most cases we were outclassed by our oppon- ents. During the course of the season we met each team in the league twice. Our initial start was postponed due to the fact that several of our players were in Florida playing football in the Orange Bowl. On December 15 we made our debut against a vet- eran Quincy team and were left in the dust by a count of 61-45. A very slow start put us in the hole and we were never able to recover, although we did hold them even in the second half. Chuck Olsen with eleven points did yeoman work while Richie Green chalked up twelve points. Medford followed, and after a very close first half, we fell behind in the second and dropped this one by a score of 47-34. Again it was Green with thirteen points and Captain Gigante with seven points for the losing cause. Against Revere we came into our own and downed them by a score of 62-30. After a miserable start we clicked in the second half and scored at will. Green dropped in thirty points while Olsen found the range for seventeen. Things were looking up. Maiden came into our gym next with a great veteran team. We were unable to untrack ourselves all night and took another loss by a score of 65-49. Green, Lo- Conte, and Canatelli held up the scoring for us. We started the New Year against North Ouincy, and all our resolutions went up in smoke, as again we were unable to get started in the first half and dropped this one by a 65-51 score. Gigante was on target to the tune of nineteen points but this was not enough. For several years now Chelsea has been in the dol- drums of basketball success, but at last they are climb- ing back to the top. What has been an easy touch for us in the past few years turned out to be a routine win for them. We were belted by our neighbors by a score of 72-56. Green and Olsen were tops with twenty-four and thirteen points. Our old rival Somerville came next and we jour- neyed to their court for this one. No one gave us an outside chance, but when the smoke of battle had cleared, there we were sitting on top of the world by a 55-52 score in a hair-raiser from start to finish. Green popped in twenty-five points while Gigante garnered nineteen. This was a good one to win even though we were not in any tournament. The first half season ended against Lowell and we got off to a good start and went off the floor at the half in front. In the second half we could not stand pros- perity and fell apart and wound up on the short end by 46-42. This one we should have won. 113 Our return game with Quincy was a complete rout as we were pasted to the tune of 92-60. This was one of the highest scores ever run up against an Everett team. Medford tipped us over again by a score of 50-43 in a closely contested game which could have been won by our unfortunate warriors. Green and Gigante were high with sixteen and fourteen points each. We hit the win column again against our old friends Revere by an 80-59 score. Trevisani came up with twelve points to throw some joy into a forlorn season. Maiden again bombed us, but not too badly at all. We had them on the go until the last period when their superior bench made the difference. This one was 63-44. Against North Ouincy we were left at the starting gate in the first half and couldn ' t buy a basket. We did awaken in the second half, but this was a little too late. The final 59-38. Chelsea again took no pity on us and we again found ourselves on the short end 70-58. Green scored twen- ty-five points for the cause. The season had not ended at deadline time to in- clude all the scores. 1962 Scfuad 114 Leo Flynn The Season It was hoped that our third year of hockey at Everett High would be more productive than the previous two years. As the season progressed we were not to be dis- appointed in this respect. Coach Henry Schlegel had a small nucleus of hold- overs from the previous year, and with this experience, plus a few new faces, things worked out in a fairly sat- isfactory manner. The usual problem of only two prac- tices per week was a big obstacle to overcome, inas- much as the rest of the teams in the league were able to practice at will. We opened against a very formidable Maiden sex- tette and many flaws showed up in our play. They took good advantage of our weak team play and lack of con- ditioning and downed us by a score of 3-1. Ford, Don- nelly, and McMillan did show promise of a good sea- son ahead. Ford was able to score the lone goal on an assist by Donnelly and McMillan. Against Quincy we dropped a heartbreaker 3-2. The game was tied at two all right down to the last half minute when a desperation shot went into our net in what proved to be the winning tally. Ford scored on an assist by Donnelly and again on his own solo down the ice. North Quincy was a real tough battle right down to the wire. Everett scored first on a wonderful shot by Donnelly after Ford ' s assist. They came right back and scored to tie it up again. The rest of the game went this way for the rest of the night and wound up a stale- mate, a 1-1 tie. Later North Quincy was forced to for- feit the game due to playing an ineligible boy, and this gave us a 1-0 victory. Christopher Columbus, last year ' s champs, were our next opponents. They had not forgotten the fact that we were the only team to defeat them last year and push them out of the undefeated ranks. This was a battle right down to the finish. Again we were nosed out in the last period by a 2-1 margin. Neil Henrickson came into his old form in this one by blasting his way down the ice, splitting the defense, and driving in our lone goal. We finally hit the win column in good style against Revere. On three different occasions Ford teamed up with Madden and slipped the puck into their net. Then Madden took a beauty of a pass from McMillan and sank our fourth goal of the evening. We repeated our performance against Chelsea to the tunc of 3-1. New faces came into the act as Russell scored on an assist by Flynn. Again it was Madden to Ford for another goal, and Henrickson on an assist by Donnelly and Russell. The Don Bosco game was fireworks from start to fin- ish. We were in top form for this one and won it by a score of 4-1. Ford scored two fast goals on marvelous assist by Madden. Next Donnelly and Henrickson broke loose on solos and dented the nets. Then it hap- pened! An Everett boy became embroiled in a battle; another Fiverett boy pitched in to break it up; this was all that was needed. When the smoke of battle had cleared, two Everett boys were out of the game with major penalties. This meant that they could not partic- ipate in the next game. This was to hurt. 116 We lost our next game to Maiden by a score of 2-1. With our two penalty men out of action this was the downfall of us. Our hats certainly came off to the two sophomores, Dooley and Graf, who came through in great style to fill the gap. Russell scored our lone goal unassisted. Our return with Ouincy was a timid effort on our part and we dropped it 3-1. Madden scored for us on an assist by Ford from Henrickson. North Quincy was again obliged to forfeit the return game with us and so we added another victory, 1-0. The next was a Believe It or Not game against Co- lumbus. For three periods we battled back and forth without a score by either team. In the final period an Everett boy, while clearing the puck, without an oppo- nent near him, accidentally had the puck slip off his stick and . . . you ' re right, bingo, right into his own goal past our very astonished goal tender. We were be- hind 1-0. Donnelly then set sail on a power play with Riley and Henrickson. On beautiful passes they fed to Donnelly and he rammed home our second goal of the night and gave us a mere tie. i962 Scjuad 1 - i 117 118 John Riley Dave Brown Tom Catarazolo 120 Court of Honor Florence Parham 121 Hi Lights Hi Lights Outstanding Trackman Award Club House Award Scott Taylor 123 Waltz King and Queen King and Queen of the Junior Prom Sandy Astuti and Richie Rizzo Elizabeth Indelicato and Robert DeLiica Class Day Ushers and Usherettes Hi Lights Class Prophecy It is the sincere belief that few of these prophecies will come true.
