Carol DeFlumeri, Judy Scaparotti, Kathleen DaPonta, Barbara DonavOiis-xN J X ACTIVITIES STAFF Standing: Carolyn Larson, William Harrington. Sitting: Cathy McManus. Alice Cooper, Helena Rauseo, Pauline Senibaldi. Janet Micarelli. As Freshmen, we were in the top position as the Upperclassmen or Seniors in the Parlin. It was a good year. Our football, basketball, and baseball teams were State Champions and we were very proud of them. Our Class Officers were: Billy Harrington, President; Dick Talbot, Vice-President; Pat Lucci, Secretary; and Lillian Montalbano, Treasurer. Carolyn Larson and Steve Flint received the Out- standing Citizenship Award while Sue Freedman was named the winner of the Prize Speaking Con- test. Among the unforgettable memories of our Freshman year are: the tyranny of the Traffic Squad .... .the Afternoon Socials which petri- fied the bashful boys and blushing girls then there was the E (not for excellency) Club the Thursday assemblies the reciting of the never-to-be-forgotten Character. Then we so well recall to mind Parlin Day when forty three members of this outstanding class re- ceived the coveted Parlin P Award. Now we were ready and eager for the short walk across the street to the High School. But were we in for a shock! ! We were now on the lowest rung of the social ladder — lowly Sophomores. Despite the constant reference to little kids by upper classmen, getting lost in the corridors, hunting for the elevators, and searching for our rooms we managed to survive. For weeks we walked about with our mouths open because of the freedom of speech In the corridors. No ten p.m. sessions here for talking while we filed. We elected the following to lead us on: Billy Harrington, President; Larry Lifson, Vice-President; Pat Lucci, Secretary; and Helena Rauseo, Secretary. Stephanie Leather, Marie Pesce, and Dick Talbot represented us in the School Council. During the year just as many as possible were members of the various school organizations and participated in the pre- sentations possible. The backbone of the football team was found in Ciulla, Medugno, Scarinci, and Leet while Johnny Ball and Steve Flint won spots on a great basketball team. We concluded our Sophomore year with a great sense of accomplish- ment we survived. Considering ourselves a vital necessity to Everett High we returned as Juniors. By this time we were well adjusted and now it was our turn to harass those poor little Sophomores. We had grown accustomed to the luxury of the Cafeteria, the tranquility of Rm. 202, the flooded gym lockers, and the splendor of the Trophy Room. Junior year was filled with activity. This time we elected Steve Flint, President; Helena Rauseo, Vice-President; Pat Lucci, Secretary; and Andy D ' Avanzo, Treasurer. Student Council mem- bers were Connie Napolitano, Sue loss a, John Putnam, and Dick Talbot. Our Athletes again were representative of this great class and were the con- stant threat in our opponents ' hair. Greatest of all were our gallant and gracefull Ballerinas of the Talent Show. Our first real formal was this year and it was the outstanding event in our Junior year. The Junior F rom . . . Stardust . . . How com- pletely different everyone looked. Beautiful young ladies in evening gowns escorted by young gentle- men in tuxedoes. It ' s no wonder no one spoke to each other for an hour or so, we didn ' t recognize each other. This was the climax to our Junior year, a year of hard work, but a year of fun. At last we had arrived this was it . . . Seniors!! that magic word. With the usual calm confidence of the ambitious Senior we enter school with the perenial casualness of kittens. What a shock We must beat the Russians in the race to the moon school is now loaded with prospective Everett High scientists. We soon were in the swing of things, our seats on the window sills of the cafeteria were all reserved for us as were the front rows in the Auditorium. Our dignity was being appreciated. Steve Flint was again elected Presi- dent, Helena Rauseo, Vice-President; Pat Lucci, Secretary; and Sue lossa. Treasurer. Representa- tives on the School Council were: Audry Lantz, Vice-Chair man; Dave Dyer, Connie Napolitano, John Putnam, and Janet Farrell. Jack Anzivino was chosen as GoodGovernment Representative and once again Steve Flint received recognition as recipient of the Brotherhood Award. Yearbook staffs were elected, the disaster of the football season and the glamour of the basketball season and Boston Garden soon passed. We had our pictures taken and swapped them with our friends, posed for more pictures, hoped for more days off because of bad weather and so the end was drawing near. The Club activities had all swung in and out of action and now we knew the day was near at hand. The Senior Ball our final dance as High School students Class Day with all its levity and the fun which followed. The final assembly of the Class of Fifty Nine Our Graduation. As we now look back upon our twelve long years of schooling they become but a very short walk down the roadway of life. We shall miss our friends and classmates whom we have taken for granted and many are the ones whom we shall never see again. The little things we learned are now becoming mountains of good sense. The good times we had together can never be relived. Our future lies ahead but our past will always be a gathering of many pleasant MEMORIES 14 15 WHEN OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY 17 YOUR CLASSMATES AND COMPANIONS Marilyn Kerrins 25 Connie Napolitano WALTZ KING AND QUEEN EMATI AWARD Elaine Pitts and James Connors Pauline Senibaldi 1958 CLASS DAY USHERETTES AND USHERS 26 SENIOR BALL COMMITTEE ORATORICAL WINNERS BOYS STATE AWARD r if i Barbara Zagorsky, Billy Harrington, ajid Sue Freedman Steve Flint and Billy Harrington 27 SENIOR HOMEROOM PRESIDENTS standing: John Anzivino, Bobert Comeau, John Ball, Kathleen Morgan, John Putnam, and Domenic Pensavalli. At our first meeting we completely filled (over filled) Room 319. After saluting the flag in French and singing Les Marseillaise , we settled down and elected officers. Among our many activities we managed to plan a trip to a French res- taurant and an evening at a French movie. Everyone certainly had a wonderful time. We presented a variety of French scenes for the Christmas assembly consisting of three scenes depicting Christmas in France. One was the traditional manger scene while the second centered around a tableau of a French home with wooden shoes and other typical French customs displayed. The third tableau showed us how the French children ob- served their Fete by singing the traditional French Carols, with Cantiques de Noel in the background. Even the little puppy which ran across the stage just before we were through didn ' t dim our high spirits. Oh, yes! We can ' t forget the Christmas Party which was so success- ful. We played games in French and had ice cream cookies, and home- made cake. Even Santa Claus from the Spanish Club joined in the fun. In closing v. ' e must not forget to thank Mile. The play was a rolicking, delightful comedy of youth. The three act play was a story in the comic terms of the production of a play in high school. The action took place on the stage and in the auditorium, during rehearsals and after presentation. The first act introduced you to all the characters and their personality. Toward the end of the first act the play books were stolen. This caused much confusion, but their Dramatic teacher managed to write up the scripts. To make matters worse, the members of the cast didn ' t like the play because they felt the lines were much too corny. At the end of Scene I in Act II, they found out who stole the play books. This caused much confusion for everyone. As the day of the presentation of the play approached, Miss Burgess felt that the play would be a flop and would not go off very well. — But to everyone ' s surprise, in the final, the play became a huge success. Members of the cast included: Barbara Zagorsky, Judith Cordeau, Suzanne Freedman, Loretta Swain, Marilyn Feldman, Harriet Lanzman, Carolyn Feldman, Connie D ' Agostino, Marilyn Pierce, Nancy Franks, Sylvia Aliberti, Lois Thompson, Bill Harrington, Neil DellaPiana, Bruce Scholosberg, Tom Trevisani, James Cirino, Howard Rosenblatt, and Gerald Cohen. Club Activities finally went into full motion after the appointment of Mr. Thomas Sullivan. The National High School Debate Topic : The United States should adopt the essential features of the British system of education , was selected as the major theme of the year. An instructive course was offered with much time being devoted to the research of the topic and to the mastering of the tech- niques of discussion and debate. The group was a very enthusiastic one and prepared with great diligence for the two major hi-lights of the year. The Boston College Prize Debate and the Oratorical Contest. Little did we suspect how much we would need that hope throughout the following games. Crimson Stops Newton In 19-18 Thriller was the headline after our first game on A Monday afternoon at Everett. Our boys came from behind three times, and trailing 18-12 in the final minute of play, Medugno caught a pass for a 21 yard scoring play. With the score tied DePari kicked the winn- ing point. Harry Leete was outstanding in the line, while DePari and Medugno carried the backfield load on offense. Against Somerville our next oppon- ent, Everett was defeated 14-0. The Crimson threatened in the third period when they recovered a fumble on the Somerville 12 but lost the ball on downs. Other than this we couldn ' t seem to make much headway against the big Somerville team. Everett ' s fighting eleven came from behind twice to almost cop a victory overQuincy. Medugno and DePari gave their all but we lost this heartbreaker 22-20. Until the final minutes we thought we had a GBI win in our grasp. With our 1 and 2 record we made the trip to Arlington to face a good rugged team. After dominating the first quarter to lead 8 to 0, Everett felt the impact of an undefeated powerhouse. Arlington really got rolling and was leading at the half 22-16. The roof fell in the last period as the Spy Ponders scored 30 points to win 52 to 16. Scarinci and DePari did their best as we felt our third straight loss. «tM 4 ' V , 4r ' 112 With spirits low we ventured to Medford on a Monday afternoon but Everett ' s eleven came through in great style as they defeated the Medford Mustangs 25-0. The Crimson scored in each period with Scarinci and Medugno making 2 of the 4 touchdowns. Everett displayed some fine defense and a very classy backfield. Our next rival was Weymouth, always a tough opponent. Everett was handed a crushing defeat by a score of 22 to 0. Although the Crimson showed strong offense in the third quarter they were stopped twice just short of Ihe goal line by the hardhittujg j| Shore team. Hoping fjppTc pHPH after our loss to Weymi Ch, we wer terribly disa- ppointed as Nashu SjjM to a 45 to 19 victory oven our H mg squad. The New HampsRire par ulled away to a decisive win aftep a 6 first quarter. DePari scored taa ejmd Medugno once to account for Everett ' s tally. In the 65th renewal of their traditional football series, Ever ett and Maiden battled to the final gun, only to have the Tornadoes win by the slim margin of one touchdown-26 to 20, Everett led 12 to 8 as the first half ended and appeared to be a vastly superior t e a m . However, Maiden recove d and scored the decid- ing tpuchdownVith two minutes to play. 2TD ' S for the Crimson were by Scarijici with Medugno and DePari making some fine runs. Sayio took over the terback spot the team on final Th Chels Stadium, at Mnb ' clock on a cold TBanl giving morning before 10,000 ch rmg fans. The Everett followers got awakening as they saw the Red aad] trounced by Chelsea 2 3 to Crimson couldn ' t seem to get s ' and except for a few good rum Medugno app red definitely outcla The seasc was disappointing t ' the least, but at times the team showed brilliant play. They were led by Captain Leete who along with Dyer, Melchionno and Ball did a fine job in the line, while Medugno, Scarinci, DePari and CiuUa made up an excellent backfield. We are proud of our coaches and our classmates who gave their best to bring victory to Everett High, and if in some instances they failed it was certainly not because of lack of spirit. Best of luck to our senior athletes in the future! BASKETBALL SQUAD THE SEASON Basketball at its best at Everett High. In his usual cap- able fashion, Coach Putnam again came up with a good club. With a nucleous of only a few of last year ' s squad he man- aged to mould together a team which wound up the season with a record of fifteen wins and three losses. The season opened with a big question mark as to the boys ' capabilities but this was soon to be forgotten as they trimmed Maiden by the score of 69-48. Co-Captains Ball and Flint each came up with twelve points. Russo also came up with twelve more and Motrone was the big gun with fourteen. North Quincy was next and they too fell victim to the Maroon team 78-49. Russo was top man with seventeen points, Motrone with fifteen, and Ball with fourteen. Revere offered very little and this was decided early and allowed Coach Putnam to clear his bench for most of the game. Johnny Ball topped the scoring with twenty points. Weymouth, one of the top teams to beat in league, was next and the boys gave this one to Putty for a Christmas gift by a big margin 77-49. Ball again was all over the court and garnered twenty -one points. Russo also did well with eighteen points. To finish off the year of 1958 in good style the team took on Lowell on the night of December 30, and wound up on the long end 71-44. Russo was tops this time with fifteen points closely followed by Motrone with thirteen and Flint with twelve. 1 M To start off the New Year we picked on Medford and burried them by a score of 64-43. Flint finally started to roll in good style and came up with fourteen points closely followed by Russo with thirteen and Ball with eleven. Quincy High, a thorn in the side of many a team in the past, fell before the rush and this was to the tune of 76-41. Once again it was nineteen and Flint with seven- teen points. Somerville, our ej isl nwas next in line. Our hopes were high. Both teams und eated. At the end of the first period we trailed by four Ipoints and at the half by three points. We were missing w the foul line and this was hurting. At the e d of the thir ' pjeriod we not only caught up but went out inJ[r ntT)y t)ivo pointfl owever, the Somer- ville bench had the serves and this soon told and we went home very deject 70-54 score. The whole game was a great exhibition with the score first in their favor and then in ours. Going into the final minutes the lead was ours and it looked as if we were in. Then it happened, again those Somerville subs were too much for us and they pulled it out at the last moment 68-61. Ball popped in twenty points, Summers fourteen, and Flint thir- teen. The final game of the season saw us once again down Chelsea by a score of 86-63. On to Boston Garden and the Tech Tourney! ! I ! 1 15 MEET THE CHAMPS The Tech Tourney and Boston Garden. This is the dream of every Eastern Massachusetts Basketball Team. For thirty one years Coach Len Putnam had been the Mentor of the Everett High basketball team and, as is the way with every coach, he has had his good years and his bad years, his fat years and his lean years. Yes, we had been in tourney play before in the Garden but we were never quite able to come out the winner and champ. Once again we were invited to participate even though the odds were against us and the predictions were that we would not last to the end. We opened the trials against a high ranking Boston Conference Champion in Boston English High. This club proved to be of little trouble to our underdogs and we came home the victor by the one-sided score of 68- 41. The entire squad took part in this one and every boy did his part. To single out an outstanding player would be unfair although Co-Capt Steve Flint did come up with seventeen points while Co-Captain Johnny Ball and George Summers managed to get sixteen in the short time they played. Somerville, top team in the tourney choice was our next opponent. This was the same club that had licked us twice in league play and of course we were not given a chance. This was the spot to be in for us, everything to win and nothing to lose. We did just what was not predicted, We Licked ' Em 87-86. Boston Garden will never forget this one nor will we. Dogged determination and a team that wouldn ' t be beaten predominated the play all night. The rafters rang and the thirteen thou- sand spectators roared right down to the finish, and when the smoke of battle had cleared, there we were the vic- tors. To each and every boy goes the credit for victory. Johnny Ball was high scorer with twenty seven points but the play of Steve Flint and Tom Gianinno was out- standing from a defensive point of view. Beverly High, North Shore Champions, came next and our boys toyed with them. Once again every member of the squad participated and only two boys failed to be in the scoring column. This one went to us by the score of 83-51. The final game for the championship before four- teen thousand fans. Matignon High School our opponent and a real rugged team. Our boys were a little slow starting but once they managed to get under way they were not to be denied. A narrow lead separated the two teams most of the way but we sewed it up by the score of 64-60. Bedlam broke loose at the final gun as our boys tipped over the Apple Cart and walked off with the coveted Eastern Massachusetts High School Cham- pionship. To Coach Putnam and his boys, the highest of praise. Thanks for the thrills and the chills of a wonderful sea- son and the many happy moments you gave us. May your futures be bright and may you always remain Champions m your chosen fields in life. Our next move was on to Boston Garden and the New England Championships. Time does not permit us to record this due to the necessity for the book going to press but we do know that we will be proud of the Everett High School Championship Basketball Team of 1959 forever. 1 16 r BASEBALL SQUAD 1.
