Bleiler Assistant Superintendent God in His omnipotence and glory Saw fit to choose from our midst This member of our faculty So beloved by all. To all whose fortune it was To have had him in class His loss is best known. He was gifted by his Creator With an even disposition. His endless sense of wit and fair play Combined with his self respect and Respect for others were qualities supreme. The passing of Mr. Wallace has left a void Which will never be filled. We knew him to be a friend, But greater still he was A husband and a father. We have been made richer by Our association with him, And may God find a real Place in Heaven for him. Henry J. Morris, Chairman Joseph A. Curnane Margaret Denny William P. Canty, Superintendent 20 OUR SENIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL MEMBERS THIS IS THE STORY OF THE CLASS OF ' 58 ' Step right up folks and hear about the greatest little class on earth! Through Gate Number One we see the setting for the Freshmen year, which got this class off to a bang. This scene ie directed by such able leaders as President Thomas Lee, Vice Pre sident Elaine Martini, Secretary Joan D ' Orlando and Treasurer Tony DiCesare. Here we find football strong- men such as Giggie and Squatrito, and the tall men of basketball, La Bella and McCarthy. Just a minute folks, we can ' t forget those talented actors Binnie Levine and Bob Sullivan and of course, our fluent debaters Alan Parker and Malta Robkoff. As a small example of the greatness of this class we are proud to say that thirty -five of our number received that very hard to attain Parlin P. Now folks, as we move on through Gate Number Two we find the setting has changed. The Sophomore year is set in that colossal building known as Everett High School. Ahh yet, our class is a little bewildered, but pulling through in our usual fighting spirit, we elect as our directors. President Thomas Lee, Vice President Ellen S amp s o n , Secretary Arlette Roselli, and Treasurer Nancy King. This dynamic class sends DeVivo, Elder and Sullivan to School Council. We find athletic prowess in such people as La Bella. Borrelli, cind Ciulla, the football players, and Gray and Simons the basketball players. Singers? Of course ! You ' ll find them in Gilbert and Sullivan ' s Gondoliers . Our acting ability is brought forth by Alan Parker in much Ado about Nothing. Through Gate Three we find the setting the same but our class moves confidently and carries out stupendous feats. Because they directed our previous scene so well, we again elect Lee, President, Sampson Vice President, Roselli, Secretary, and King Treasurer. We see that Martini now joins DeVivo, Elder and Sullivan on School Council. Joel Kornitsky wins a Debating Prize, not to mention the Havard Book. Drajna Night presented a technicolor foreign play called Lute Song. starring such Comedians as Henderson, King, Levine zmd Sullivan. In football sharing the spotlight with his team mates, we see outstanding lineman, Barrelli. With the conclusion of the football season, other spirited athletes come forth to participate in basketball, baseball, and track. This is the class that helped con- fiscate the Christmas tree, made the Talent Show a hit, and put forth the brightest formal of t h e season. The Junior Prom under Chairman Martini and Secretary King ' s direction. We find this class also presents, Possession an English comedy at the Drama Festival. What a gala musical is Gilbert and Sullivan ' s H.M.S. Pinafore starring DeVivo, Bradford, and Roselli. Now, as in other scenes our versatile class proudly sends forth several talented musicians to the All-State Music Conference. Now as we approach Gate Number Four leading to the big tent we can sense from the excite- ment that this is going to be a tremendous ending to an outstanding class. Immediately we see that the Senior Class is under the leadership of President La Bella, Vice President Borrelli, Secretary Roselli, Treasurer Keegan. Representing us in School Council are Elder, Bennett, Sampson, O ' Donnell, and McCarthy. Our football teEim comes front and centre with Co-captain Borrelli and McCarthy leading other outstanding members. As for the football season, well, we had fun! Dubbling along, but not yet in the spot light we can make out the basketball team of Gray, Ellis, Simons, King, Papa, and Tannyhill. The show isn ' t over yet folks. Before you leave you will see a really big Christmas Dance, the roman- tic Senior Prom, the entertaining Gilbert and Sullivan production, the suspenseful Dramatic Club play, and of course, the Talent Show, packed full of members of our oh - so talented class. Just to add a bit of foreign intrigue we may add an Italian aind French play. We can ' t forget to tip our hats to the people who have made our narration possible, the Year Book Staff. In June, 1958, our show will travel the tenative road of life. From all past performances, we can only predict success for every mernfeer of our cast. fl j |i gllil HlCSU. 24 ANTHONY JOHN ALIBERTI 154 Main St. Rubber Legs ' ' To be a contractor is Tony ' s ambition, And in this field he ' ll gain great recognition. ORCHESTRA FRENCH CLUB The Cercle Francais unde r the much appreciated and able leadership of Les Mademoiselles Ottaviano andGureghian enjoyed one of its best seasons and certainly its most varied. Variety is the spice of 1 i f e , so many say, and our French Club this year pursued many original ideas and projects that were new, and therefore entertaining, to those who participated in them. Attendance at French movies and operas, dining at a French restaurant, a coffee hour, and a Christmas party highlighted the year, with talks on school and social life in France, French music, and other phases of French life adding a touch of culture, thus rounding out a well-balanced program. The meeting, including the saluting of our flag in French, and the singing of the Marseillaise were conducted almost entirely in the language, and games played were carried on in the saime manner. Our club also t o o k part in the Christmas a s s e m b 1 y this year, singing several Cantiques de Noel and supplying a delightful bit of originality to the occasion. The year, on the whole, was quite successful, and again much thanks to our moderators. OFFICERS: MODERATORS: President - Richard Gray Mile. V. Ottaviano Vice-President - Philip Simons Mile. S. A 101 FOOTBALL 1957 a p • - THE SEASON The outlook for the 1957 season had been dubious from the start, but little did we expect the disasterous record which befell our stalwarts. Coach Sarno had predicted that anything could happen, but hopes were pointed toward the heavens all in vain. The first set-back was in the loss of the veteran, Co-Captain Dan McCarthy, who was put out of action for the entire season with a broken shoulder. Next came the Asian Flu and between illness, postponed games, cancellations, and substitute opponents, we did manage to finish the season. On a very cold night we opened against Manchester N. H. in their stadium and the boys managed to do pretty well. Co-Captain Tom Borelli played an out- standing game in the line as did Leo Ciulla and Bob Santoiani at the end spots. Len La Bella ran the team in masterful style and passed and ran well and we brought home a victory by the score of 25 to 13 Somerville, always an excellent club, was next in line. This game was played in Somerville for the first time in a long while. It was a nip and tuck affair from start to finish, but we were doomed to drop our first game by the score of 13 to 8. Again it was Borelli aided by Giggie and Golden who were standouts. Quincy, a big team with potential greatness, was next in line. This was our first home game and a chance to show the home town what we had. This was a battle down to the last second. Quincy scored first and led 6 to 0, but with a minute and twelve seconds to go, La Bella tossed to Medugno and the score was tied. Following the kick off a desperation pass by Quincy was intercepted and the game ended with Everett on their 10 yard line. Then came the Flu. Arlington postponed and we rested. Next came Medford and they canceled. Two weeks and no game. Then back came Arlington all worked up and inspired by their upset Victory over un- defeated Weymouth. We were no match for the Spy Ponders and they hammered out a decisive 33 to 6 victory. The following week we substituted undefeated Waltham for canceled Weymouth. This was the most interesting game of the season, from a scoring point of view. Everett more than held its own during the first half and our hopes were high for the unexpected. In the second half we ran out of steam and the boys from the Watch City took over. The final score was Waltham 32 Everett 19. Borelli, Lee.Giggiand La Bella were all standouts. Nashua N. H., about which we knew little, gave us a lesson the following week. We were humbled by the score of 33 to 12, That was a long and quiet ride home. Maiden and the 57th renewal of our rivalry took place in Maiden. We were the underdog s, but once again during the firsthalf we were inform. The second half started at 7 to 7, but once again the roof fell in and we wound up on the short end of a 21 to 7 score. We wanted that final game with our ancient rival Chelsea badly. A win would take a lot of sting out of our losses, but this was not to be. A superior Chelsea team stuffed our Thanksgiving turkey with a very de- finite 25 to 0 defeat, CXir season was not good but in defeat there is victory, for the lessons of life are not always in victory but in what we learn by our mistakes. We are proud of our coaches, proud of our team, and proud of our classmates on the team. r rr r ? BASKETBALL 57- ' 58 THE SEASON The 1957-58 basketball season got underway with Chelsea, our first opponent. Our tall and somewhat anxious team at once gained the lead and kept it throughout, .to win 61-41. The boys, especially with height they have this year in Flint, Ells, Tanny- hill, King, Papa, and Gray, played a terrific game. The defense was good eind not many got by Simons, Ball, or Russo. The big game of the season was next, and we traveled to Somerville to meet our traditional rival. It was Friday the 13th and our luck just wasn ' t with us. We were ahead throughout the game but in the final quarter they gave us a rough time. In the last five seconds Somerville scored and won 54-53. It was a heartbreaker but a well-played game on the part of both teams. Next we went to Q u i n c y where w e were to meet a fairly strong team. Good team play and standouts such as Ells, Flint, and Simons, helped keep them trailing us. We won 64-54 and a happy team returned to Everett. The Everett - Lowell game and another victory! The score --a high 81 -51 ! Quite a game ! On to Weymouth where we were to meet a strong Ist place team which had no losses on its record-so far! But they hadn ' t played Everett yet! We took this game by a score of 52-47 and the high scorers for the night were Gray and Flint. Our next victim was Revere who fell by a s c o r e of 74-40 on our home court. It was a good game and baskets were made left and right-by Everett of course ! On to North Quincy and our fast moving basketball team took anothe r game by the score of 63- 34. Our defense gets better all the time! Gray and Ball were top scorers for the night, each with 14 points. We traveled to Maiden, our long-time rival, and there gain- ed another victory to add to o u r ever growing list. The score 63-56. Another game with Chelsea which promised to be the same as the first one, was. We came out on the top of a 77-58 score. Next the second and p r o b ab ly one of the m o s t exciting games with S o m e r v i 1 1 e ever played. The boys were quite nervous amd got behind in the first. They made a thrilling come back but didn ' t quite catch up and Somerville again beat us by a score of 69-65. Determined to keep our record from being marred by any more losses, the team plunged into the next game with Quincy with great enthusiasm and won by a score of 58-55. On to Medford and of course again good news. Steve Flint got baskets left ajid right and was as usual sensational at the foul line. Billy Ells was also great that game. The score-- ,71-42! Baskets, baskets, and more baskets! Quite a bit of action was seen in offensive play in the Lowell-Everett game and the score was a high 84-47. Who won? What a question! I A fairly strong Weymouth team invaded our territory next, out couldn ' t hold the Everett team down. They went home sad, while we celebrated another win with the score of 54-31. 1 Our last away game of the season was at Revere cuid the iscore rose high. At least ours did! Victory 85-53. 77-49 was the result of the next geime with North Quincy. High scorers were Gray and Ells and the defensive work was wonde rf ul. Maiden again and our last league game. The score 81-59. Once Everett got out in front they stayed tiiere. At the conclusion of the regular season we were invited to participate in the Tech Tourney in Boston Garden. Our trial run found us dumping New Bedford by the score of 76-52. In the quarter finals we were caught nappin and Lynn English tipped us over by the score of 60-52. I To coach Putnam and his boys congratulations on a job well done.
