In September of 1953, we entered our freshmen year at Parlin Jr. High School. Those whom we chose to represent our class were: June Striano - -Pre sident, Anthony Pasquariella - -Vice President, Janet Ward- -Secretary, Sheila Monahan--Treasurer. The sports we enjoyed in this year were: Football, Basketball, and Baseoall, which were all championship teams. At our first social, we saw the smiling faces of our ninth graders, as the y danced ever so smoothly over the floor. Other extra-curricular activities which were enjoyed were : Orchestra, Band, Debating Club, Talent Contest, and other various activities. Feared members of the traffic squad were: Norma De Feo, Maryann Vultaggio, Arthur Douglas, Delores Donati, and Camille De Sisto. Another activity spotlighted during our freshman year was our annual Music Festival. On the Memorable Parlin P day, 26 of our fellow classmates were the recipients of the coveted Parlin P award. When September rolled around again, we as sophomores, made our long anticipated entrance into Everett High School hoping for the best and expecting the worst. Our class officers were: June Striano - -President, Sophie Grande--Vice President, Janet Ward - -Secretary , Sheila Mona- han- - Treasurer . We came into a world of confusion when we found out the numbers on the rooms had been changed and the elevator was out of order. Inbetween P.M. se ssions and pranks , we enjoyed extra-curricular such as: Band, Orchestra, Gilbert and Sullivan, Lyceum, Dramatic Club, Glee Club to name just a few. The talent show which was greatly appreciated by our faculty, had such notables as: Mary- ann Vultaggio, Christine Cannatelli, Carol Bowser,- and the imported Hawaiian dancers, alias, the Everett High School football team. As the Junior year rolled in and the Sophomore year faded away, we began our Junior year like a flash of lightening. The class officers were: June Striano--President, Sophie Grande -- Vice President, Janet Ward- -Secretary, Anthony Acquaviva- -Treasurer. At this time they opened a new Memorial Room in which they put all the trophies which our teams won, and what teams we had. In football, we enjoyed defeating Chelsea 21-0, which meant that they had lost the Class A Championship for this year, while we won the GBI (Greater Boston Interscholastic League). In Basketball we had also won the GBI league championship and lost the Massachusetts Tourney to Durfee in the semi-finals at Boston Garden. In Baseball, we enjoyed three championships, the GBI, the Eastern Massachusetts, while beating Newton who had previously lost one High School game, and the State Championship beating Springfield Cathedral 2-1. On May 4, the Junior Prom was held at Everett High. Soft ligfits, la ' Wcih decorations with music by the Hi-Liters added to the mood. This brought our Junior year to an end. At last the big day had arrived, September 14, 1956. This day was the day we entered our Senior year at Everett High School. We balloted for the last time for our class officers who were: June Striano--President, Edward Murray--Vice President, Noxma De Feo- -Secretary, Theresa Messina--Treasurer. w ' ' Then as the weeks rolled by, we began to enjoy missing period ](x||aking our yearbook pictures. That was the happiest week that we had enjoyed in our high schoorera. On Drama Night, the new dramatic advisor. Miss Marilyn Doherty p r e s e n t e d the Lute Song, which starred Anthony Botto and turned out to be the comedy hit of the year, even though it was a drama. Our first marking period found inflated marks and inflated heads, ' Hg he lesser classes laughed. fPp During the middle of the year we found ourselves filing down to the auditorium for the needle --the polio shot. This brought about aching arms and fainting spells. On December 7 , we had our C h r i s t m a s Dance, which again brought the Hi-Liters to our gym. The gym was decorated with a twenty -foot Christmas tree which became famous over night. Timt came for Santa to enter and much to the surprise of the student body, we found him to be a little man with a big belly and a long beard. An even greater surprise wfas the shock which brought about the unveiling of Santa ' s costume. This Santa was none other than our own Bucky Pasquariella. Previous to this event the Recreation Center held a Football Dance chosing Diane Churchill as Football Queen. Awards were made to Raymond Dunbrack voted Lineman of the year, while other awards were given to Pasquariella and Borelli. Graduation was in view. Good things must come to an end. DANIELE February 11, 1957 IN MEMORIAM When the shadows of life are beginning to fall. And our Heavenly Master has made His call, The world seems in darkness and full of despair, But we still have the Master to turn to in prayer. He looked to his Master, his Teacher, his Guide, He sought His advice and His council with pride. He needed His help, His guidance and truth, For he was a teacher, entrusted with youth. He worked with great vigor, with all his command. He set an example and everything planned. He lectured and taught and explained with great care. His personal interest in each pupil he shared. His spirit was vibrant and he worked with a zest. And he made our social activities always the best. With his passing we ' re saddened, but this sadness we ' ll span, For our lives have been richer from knowing this mar.. We know that our God, Who reigns supreme in His iove. Has a place for Louis near His throne up above. The purple of night steals soft thru the years, And age and contentment in all of us appears. But we ' ll bow down our heads and offer a prayer. That someday in heaven we ' ll all meet him there. R. E. The purposes of the club are both social and academic. Chief among the academic are the endeavors to complement the study of the language, to put into practical use the language used in the classroom, and to enlarge upon the knowledge of Italian culture. Highlights of the year were Parents ' Night on March 4, 1957, in which parents and students all participated in an It a 1 i a n class. Refresh- ments were served and thus the severity of classroom tension was lost. All of the club members participated in a school assembly and many of the members par- ticipated in the annual presentation of a play. The following committees were active throughout the year. Interesting films were provided during the year by. Trans World Airlines, Pan American Airlines, and Delta Airlines. The Spanish Cl-ub also put on an assembly in April for the high school boys and girls , at which time they had an invited guest from the Castilian Club in Boston. We hope the Spanish Club will succeed in doing good work in the future. As for you Miss Dorn, Bueno Saluda. Music, the printed work, and drama all serve to bring us to this end. At the first meeting of the French Club, in September we elected our officers . Early November we enlivened a meeting by two clever skits and monologues. With the arrival of the Christmas season, the old noels were sung for all, for we feel that what is French is often times beautiful and therefore should be shared. In February the Auditorium was filled with students and the occasion was the presentation of our first French Assembly, a Comedy Leave It To Suzanne. Spring brought some educational movies and slides and prizes to our outstanding students. Parlons , our French newspaper presents the opportunity to write, to express our thoughts in the French manner. To end the School year , a farewell party was given in honor of the seniors, the first week in May. LYCEUM CLUB The Everett High School Lyceum , under the able direction of Mr. Jame s Mahan, is the oldest organization group in the school. During the year a very instructive course was given and much time devoted to methods and procedures in public speaking. The organization of forums, discussions, both panel, and round table, and intra club debates all attested to the great amount of interest among this group. Of course all of the members looked forward to, and a great many participated in the an- nual Oratorical contest, and the Boston College Prize Debate. CoachSarno had a veteran backfield and, if the line could come through in fair fashion, things would be looking up. We opened the season in a night game against Man- chester, New H a m p s h i r e Central High School and belted them to the tune of 30-7. Our backs managed to get a good workout but the line did not have a real chance to test its strength. lozza, Pasquarilla, La Bella, and Messina were the big guns in the backfield, while Foresteire and Prodanas ripped a big hole in the opponent ' s line. On a night not fit for even a fish to be out, we defeated Somerville High 26-0. Even the downpour of a hurricane did not dampen the ardor of the boys. Pasquarilla scored twice and Messina and lozza each swam for a touchdown. The following Saturday we journeyed to the City of Presidents and had a close call. We got off to an early two touchdown lead in the first half and in the second half managed to hold on with the aid of a safety and win out 15-13. Quincy, by far, was the best club we had met to date and this game showed that we had some loose ends to be gathered in. Bucky and Messina bore the scoring honors while Dunbrack, Gray, and Prodanas stood out in the line. After three wins we made the trip to Arlington to face a good, rugged team. In the first half, the sharp shooting of La Bella and Acquaviva to Bucky and Frank Messina gave us a lead of 13-0, and we were looking very good on defense. In the second half we seemed to be the victims of every bad break. Arlington rose up and roared back at us and when the smoke of battle had cleared we were on the short end of a 20-13 score . Medford, on paper, was a poor team and we were not supposed to have too much trouble with them. Evidently they forgot to believe this and the result was a stalemate, 0-0 in a very un-intere sting game. Our next venture was against Weymouth High. The school was covered with signs, pep rallies were held, and everybody in town was talking. Frank Mess ina opened up with a 79 yard dash and we were out in front 7-0. Evidently we thought the game was over with until the last quarter when Len Young scored again and this gave us fourteen points . In the meanwhile, Weymouth had been doing a little business of their own to the tune of scoring 54 points and our humiliation knew no bounds. After this slaughter our stalwarts bounced back against Nashua, New Hampshire and ran rough shod over them 32- 13. lozza, Young, and Pasquarilla were the leading scorers while Dunbrack, Giggie , and Tom Borelli played outstandingly in the line . The Golden Tornado of Maiden, our ancient rival, was next in line and this proved to be one to the best games in our schedule. Even with Johnny lozza sidelined with a bad knee, our able subs carried the burden. A La Bella to Pas- quarilla pass was good for eighty yards and a touchdown, and later Leo Ciulla recovered a punt blockedby Ronnie McCarthy for the second T.D. The third and final score was by Buck --who has been the outstanding scoring back of the season. Ron and Dan McCarthy left nothing to be wanted for in line play. Thanksgiving day, Turkey, and Chelsea High. What a game ! First it was Chelsea leading with a safety, then Everett roared back with a La Bella to Bucky pass and we were out in front. This lifted the boys and we quickly went on to score two more, one by Pasquarilla and the other by the hard charging full-back, Dick Silverio. With a 19-2 lead and the game moving along the fans were all quite happy. Suddenly Chelsea came to life and started to pass, and in nothing flat they had two touchdowns. It was a good thing the final whistle blew or we might have had to score another touchdown. Congratulations to Coach Sarno and his two assistants, Mr. Romboli and Mr. Leo for a job well done. To all the seniors we wish success in the future. Tackle life as you tackled on the field of sports and your final goal will be reached. I i THE SEASON This year, 1957, the E.H.S. basketball squad entered the season defending F.B.I. League Co-Champs with Somerville High. Coach Putnam felt that even with the loss of four first stringers from last year ' s championship team that this club would click after a fashion. This they did as once again they won the league championship and made their way into the Tech Tourney. Everett-66 Waltham -47 The opening game of the 1957 season, played at Waltham , proved to be a runaway, with every man on the squad seeing action. Capt. Ed. Murray was high scorer with 22 points. Everett -6 3 Watertown-40 The opening game at the E.H.S. Gym proved to be a thriller up to the final quarter when the rebounding of Messina and Flint and the shooting of Murray, Ball, and Brickley became too much for the green Watertown boys. Capt. Ed Murray again was high scoter netting 16 points. Everett-56 North Quincy-68 Last year ' s Tech Tourney rivals of Everett proved to have too much rebounding and shooting strength for the Crimson. This veteran team gave us a much needed lesson in the necessity for team play. Everett -52 Newton -6 1 The last non-league game ended with Everett on the short end of a 61-52 score. Newton ' s stamina in the final half of the game proved enough for the victory. Once again we showed we were not ready to completely play as a unit. When this happens, watch out. Everett -60 Quincy-59 The first league game for Eve rett was a thriller right down to the last three seconds of the game when Capt. Ed. Murray popped in a 3 point play while downbyZ points. Capt. Ed Murray was also high scorer with 22 points. Everett -55 Chelsea -40 Our neighborhood rivals proved to be pushovers for the Crimson Tide of Everett as Eddie Murray again netted the high score with 16 points. Everett-48 Lowell -47 Another s qu e ak e r at the E.H.S. Gym which was pulled out by Johnny Ball, a sophomore, in the final seconds of play. Capt. Murray again was high scorer with 19 points . Everett -67 Revere -35 Everett ' s height and shooters proved to have enough power to down the boys from the beach area. Outstanding players were. Ball, Brickley, Gray, Davis, De Giacomo, Murray, Messina, Sciarappa, and Flint. Everett -42 Somerville -49 Everett ' s rival, Somerville, not as strong as previous years , proved to still have the voodoo over Everett. In the first half Everett led by 10 points, but only scored a mere 12 points for the second half while the Red Blue caught up and went ahead. This one we lost but never should have. This lapse of the club, we hope, will prove how important team play is. Everett-48 Medford-52 Medford.the spoiler for 57 , out re bounded and outs hot Everett for the win, while Steve Flint was hitting the nets for 20 points. In defeat we looked better than we have looked in previous games. Everett -54 Malden-43 Everett ' s hustle and shooting proved to be enough for the victory. John Ball was in Maiden ' s hair consistently, stealing the ball and becoming high scorer with 17 points. Al Sciarappa threw his two points in, for the winning cause as well as playing an outstanding defensive game. Everett -66 Quincy-39 Capt. Eddie Murray and Steve Flint were sensational in smothering Quincy for 27 points. Al Sciarappa again netted his usual 2 points and again proved that even if you don ' t throw them through, you can score for your side by preventing the other team from scoring. Everett -65 Chelsea -39 H Hustling Murray and Messina were thorns in Chelsea ' s side all night as Everett swept by the Red Divils for their second straight time. John Ball netted 18 points while Sciarappa got 2 points and Davis 5 points. These last two are fast becoming the best thing in defensive ball. Everett-81 LowelI-63 Everett ' s highest score of the season came on the court of Lowell High. Brick- ley, Ball, Murray, Messina, Flint all out-hustled the Lowell squad. Everett-66 Revere -51 AtRevere ' s gym, the local boys just out -played their Revere rivals. High scorer was Steve Flint, with 22 points while Murray trailed with 21. Everett -64 Somerville-54 Everett ' s first win over Somerville in 10 years came before an audience of 1000 Rabid fans at the local court. Great rebounding by Brickley and Messina, and the shooting of Murray. Ball and Flint proved to be just enough to clinch the win. By | winning this game, Everett clinched a birth in the Tech Tourney at the Boston Gardens Capt. Eddie Murray threw in a terrific 32 points for the victory. Everctt-51 Medford-65 The let-downof the year by Everett and the best played game of the year by Med- ford turned out to be a 3rd Crimson loss. Bill Brickley proved to be the dead eye of the game while hitting with 5 straight floor shots, missing none and being high man with 16 in the losing cause. Everett-63 Maiden- 54 The last game of the regular season was played at Everett High School ' s Gym, Murray, Brickley, Davis, Ball, Messina, Flint, and Gray were tremendous. During the course of the regular season the team constantly improved and lost the individuality which was present at the start of the season. Probably aside from the great team play and scoring ability of Capt. Ed. Murray, was the definite de- termination of the bench to share the responsibility of meeting every challenge and to perform in true championship style. An alternate on this club would have been a regular on any other team. Our team, weakened by the loss of Billy Brickley, did not survive the first round of tournament play. We did not play up to par and dropped this one to Roxbury Memorial by the score of 62-60. Eddie Murray was slowed down by a bad ankle and add this to the early fouling out of Messina, Flint and also Eddie Murray, our cause was lost. We cann it close out this chapter of Everett Basketball without congratulating Head Coach Putnam for a job well done. It has become a habit with him to drive Everett into the tournament play year in and year out. To John DeGiacomo, assistant coach, also go congratulations for bis untiring efforts.
