With the realization that now we were no longer children in elementary school, but advanced stu- dents in every respect, the class of 55 , like a bolt of lis;htnin2;, enter the Parlin Junior High deter- mined to overcome any obstacle which might stand in the way of success, and also to ultimately achieve our goal. The slate of officers which are chosen to lead the class are Deni Evangelista, president; Darryl DeVivo, vice-president; Anne Lancian, secretary; and James Moreschi, treasurer. With the coming of the fall, our spirited class cheered our victorious teams on the field as well as on the court. Soon, at our first social, we saw the smiling faces of our ninth-graders, as they danced ever so smoothly. How improved they seemed to get as the year progressed. The importance of extra-curricular activities was sensed by our class of 55 , for there was an over- whelming response to the call for orchestra, band, glee cl ub, dramatic club, debating club, talent show, and various other activities. Before we knew it June had arrived bringing the much sought Parlin Day. The Parlin P was awarded to twenty-one students who had proved themselves outstanding in their class. Our Freshman year at the Parlin is now almost a memory, the time had come v hen we began to think of Everett High School as our school. Slowly we began to adjust ourselves to the new environments of E. H. S. Lost was the dignity and pride which we had at the Parlin for now we were the babies of the school, and as such, we were ridiculed and scorned by the upper classmen. Gradually we began to stand on our feet and re- gain our lost dignity. Elections dominate the scene in September when Deni Evangelista, president; Luciano Sciola, vice-president; Anne Lancian, sec- retary; and Sylvia Finos, treasurer were elected class officers. Representing our sophomore class were Sally Ann Holmes, Susan Myers, and Anna Cafazzo in the student council. Many of our sophomore class swelled the ranks of school activities. Notable among these were the contributions of Billy Vetrano, Dick Tammaro, and Joe Herlihy on the gridiron, with Joe Raso and Don Reddington on the court. Throughout the year progress is greatly shown as our sophomores show their ability by perform- ing in talent shows, orchestra, band. Girls Glee Club, and Gilbert Sullivan. To mark the end of our Sophomore Year the Sophomore Hop was held. It was a complete success, financially and socially despite the handi- caps, since it was held late in June, it was a bit too warm for dancing. At last by our scholastic, athletic, and social abilities we had proven to the upper classmen that we were not babies. The rites of graduation seemed many hours of homework ahead, but, we were con- fident that the reward would be worth it. With the coming of September, we entered the high school for a second time, only now we weren ' t the stumbling babies of the Sophomore Glass, but confident young men and women. As members of this great class, once more we chose our officers, Deni Evangelista, Pres. ; Edward Evangelista, V. Pres.; Anne Lancian, Sec; and Joanne Porcaro, Treas. ; representing us on the Student Council were Anna Cafazro, Sylvia Finos, Susan Myers, and Ralph D ' Amelio. Once more, with the coming of September our thoughts turned to the gridiron where the class of 55 has such outstanding players in B. Vetrano, J. Hurlihy, and D. Tammaro participating. Also in other sports did we have outstanding players. Our junior class was very active participating in Dramatic Club, Gilbert Sullivan, Girls Glee Club, Lyceum, and many others. But to climax this wonderful year of football, basketball games, dances, assemblies, and, of course, we mustn ' t for- get studies, the class of 55 presented its Prom. This memorable night will never be forgotten by those who attended. Bunky Doyle and Pat O ' Brien were chosen king and queen. This marked the close of our Junior Year, and we could hardly wait for the biggest and greatest year to come. The Senior Year had finally arrived. With it we regained our dignity and lost pride of the two previous years. We were aware that it was to be the best year, but it turned out to hold more than we had anticipated. To begin the year we chose Wm. Vetrano, Pres.; Edward Evangelista, V. Pres.; Anne Lancian, Sec. ; and Phyllis Ostrovsky, Treas. Representing us on the Student Council were Sylvia Finos, Anna Cafa zo, Virginia Wyrocki, Ralph D ' Amelio, and Richard Reeves. Those old familiar faces of Vetrano, McCarthy, Hurlihy, Tammaro, Raso, Reddington, Lewis and many others were seen. These outstanding stars in the field of Sports really proved their great abilities. E. H. S. has every reason to be proud of these boys. After with the coming of April, so came Good Govt. Day. Ralph D ' Amelio was chosen to repre- sent Everett in The State House. Also in April the Dramatic Club participated in the Annual Drama Festival. As in previous years, they did a splendid job. Before we knew it that long awaited night had arrived. The Senior Ball was held on March 25. It was a night of perfect enjoyment. The king and queen were chosen and awarded lovely gifts. Throughout the year diversion from classes was provided by the Student Council, who arranged most enjoyable and inspiring assemblies. And so too quickly this last year of school passes on. How time does pass! Only yesterday it seems that we entered the.se portals, and here tomorrow is in the future. Whatever that future may hold for you and for me there is one thing that can ' t be forgotten oi taken away, memories. May your future be just as bright as your past and may your memories be always of the nice things and the best friends, this your class of 1955. • . . • ' • • • • mm •••• •V •••I. , Through the able direction of Mr. Louis Daniele, facuhy advisor, and the untiring efforts of co-chairladies Carol Delory and Sylvia Finos and their grand committee, the annual Senior Prom was held on Friday evening, March 25. How fresh is this picture of the gym dressed in its beautiful spring finery. School girls trans- formed into beautiful young ladies in lovely eve- ning gowns added to the grandeur of the occasion. Here also we saw our former fuzzy faced boys with clean shaven jowls dressed in formals for the occasion. George Lane and his Society Orchestra were never in better company nor in better tune. Hi- lighting the affair were the Grand March, the choosing of the King and Queen, and the award- ing of prize after prize to the many in attendance. All too soon this, night of nights, was over and even our destinations after the dance are but hollow shells as compared with these fond memo- ries of this the Senior Prom of 1955. Chosen as Miss Queen and Mr. King of the class of ' 55 were Carol Bates and William Meitzner. Everett High School has every right to be proud of its Dramatic Class. Under the supervision of Mr. John F. McLaughlin its membership consists of pupils from the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes, making up one of the more active groups of the high school. The primary purpose of the Dramatic Class is to help its members develop and improve their personalities. This is accomplished by pupils taking part in recitations, skits, and assemblies. The Dramatic Class meets once a week during school time, but have other ac- tivities which they attend outside of school time. This includes plays at different colleges, the Annual Drama Conference of Emerson, and the Drama Festival. It has endeavored to add to the worth-while activities of our high school. The club has a three-fold objective : 1. To put to practical use the language studied in the class room. 2. To stimulate cooperation between parents and pupils. 3. To complement the study of the language by examining Italian culture. This year the club ' s objective was fulfilled by the following activities: 1. The annual Italian play was presented May 6, 1955. It consisted of excerpts from Don Camilio and a one act play entitled Le Tre? Grazie. 2. A Parent ' s Night was held March, 1955. A one hour class in Italian was given. The parents and pupils sat together and participated. A collation was served after the class. 3. Italian films were shown during class periods to broaden the students ' knowl- edge and background of the country. 4. A class party was held on December 7, 1954 to acquaint the pupils with each other and form friendships. In order to belong to the club the girls must maintain an average of 2.5 in their marks. They are re- quired to spend one period a week in the library, charging, shelving, and mending books. The purpose of the Library Staff is to develop an interest in books, to obtain enjoyment from them, and to acquaint the girls with library procedure. Miss Curtin, our new librarian, suggested that during Book Week we put on an assembly as our project of the year. Our speaker for the assembly was Mr. Bruce Lancaster, author of Blind Journey and other teen-age novels. He spoke on the timely subject What Is and What Isn ' t True in History. At the assembly an announcement was made that the Library Staff would sponsor two drives during Book Week. One dsive was to collect children ' s books for the Kennedy Memorial Hospital located in Brighton. This hospital is famed for its rehabilitation of children afflicted with muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. The other drive was to collect adult books for the Chelsea Naval Hospital. This hospital is known for its excellent work in treating disabled veterans. Both drives were a great success. Among the other activities of the Library Staff was a trip to the theatre. We saw a delightful musical called On with the Show. Also, during the Christmas Season all the members of the club attended a Christmas party at the home of Miss Curtin. Entertainment was provided by a few of the girls who put on a skit. The Library Staff is looking forward to a trip to a bindery factory. We also are planning to attend the Pop ' s Concert. Looking back, we believe this has been one of the most active years in the club ' s history. The officers of the Library Staff are as follows: President, Carole Bates; Vice- President, Barbara Finegan; Secretary, Blanche Wojdzinska; Treasurer, Anna Cafazzo. EL CLUB ESPANOL The Spanish Club, under the direction of Miss Mary Dorn, has had another successful year. The main purpose of the Spanish Club is to acquaint the members with the folk songs, customs, ideals, apparel, and traditions of the Spanish people. The Spanish Club enjoyed a Christmas assembly. A mixed chorus sang Noche de Paz Ve nid Fodas. The members had a gay, fiiesta assembly in April to show the numerous things they had learned in the club. At one meeting, the club was honored to have a speaker from Colombia. Some other meetings were devoted en- tirely to listening to Mambo Records. Assuming the disguise of a musician, he has fallen in love with a fair maiden, Yum-Yum; but he has been prevented from marrying her by her guardian Ko-Ko who wishes to marry her himself. The Lyceum, Everett High ' s Debating society, is the oldest e.xtra-curricular activity in the school, and the first of its kind in Massachusetts. It is, also, one of the oldest debating societies to be found in any public school system in the entire country. There are on display in the school library numerous trophies won during keen competition at tournaments sponsored by various colleges throughout New England. Upon completion of the new reading room several other awards will go on display, for which there was no available space, citing Everett teams for Outstanding Ability and Achievement. For the past several years the club has been under the capable leadership of Mr. James Mahan. Both the club and Mr. Mahan have been invested with several honors in the field of debating. The Lyceum has several debates each year with the surrounding cities such as Maiden, Chelsea, and Revere High School, with the addition this year of Maiden Catholic and Christopher Columbus High. The end of the formal season comes with the entering of our two top teams in the Boston University Inter-Scholastic Debate Tournament. However the Coup de Grace comes with the annual Boston C-ollcge Gold Medal Debate presented in the assembly hall. The topic chosen for National High School Competition for this year was: Resolved — The Federal Government should initiate a policy of Free Trade with those nations friendly to the United States. This group has had a rather difficult time in estabHshing itself in the activities of the school this year. Because of graduation, the orchestra lost all its players of the violin section except one. Luckily, seven sophomores appeared in September to bolster this all-important section. By their enthusiasm and hard work, the orchestra was ready for a public appearance at Drama Night in December and at a num- ber of assemblies throughout the year. As a result of the work being done in developing string players in the grade and junior high schools this group is looking forward to a brighter future. Many high schools have had to drop orchestras because of lack of string players but we in Everett High have doggedly kept our orchestra active since its inception in the early twenties. Dana Shattuck of the E. H. S. orchestra was selected for the All-State concert to be played at Symphony Hall in connection with the Eastern Music Educators Conference. George Revelas, student leader, is a member of the trumpet section of the Melrose Symphony Orchestra. Natalie Johnson played with the B. U. orchestra at Carnegie Hall earlier this season under Leopold Stokowski. Coach Gildea, suffering from the loss of his entire backfield and vital spots up front due to graduation, built his team around veteran co-captains Bill Vetrano and Joe Herlihy. Bob Corolla and Paul lannuzzi, both starters, were lost most of the season due to injuries. The backfield was composed of Bill Vetrano at fullback, John McCarthy and Dick Tammaro at half- backs, and John lozza at quarterback. Other capable backs who saw duty were Pete Grava, Eddie D ' Onorfio, and Oscar Dinino. The line, not as heavy as in past years, lived up to the aggressiveness for which Everett is noted. Everett ' s line was centered around left tackle Joe Herlihy and right guard Ralph Jannino. Working with these boys were Carmen DeCarlo at center, Dom Guerriro at left guard, Paul Manganaro at right tackle. Our stellar ends were Angie Fiorentino, Paul lanuzzi, and Alex Dinino. Reserve linemen were Pat Catalano, Tony LaRosa, George Prodonas, Vin Appruzzese, John Harrington, Paul Murray, George Gramstorff and Frank Messina. In the opener, Everett, by virtue of its fast charging line, held mighty Somerville to a meager six points and could have turned defeat into victory with the aid of Lady Luck. Everett was alert and recovered five Somer- ville fumbles, two of them within the ten yard markers. Vin Appruzzese made a key recovery on his own two yard line in the first quarter. Co-captain Bill Vetrano showed flashes of good end sweeping, but the edge on offense was held throughout by Somerville. lozza showed exceptional poise for a sophomore. The final score was six to nothing. Not only did we lose the game but we lost a valuable player, Robert Coroll a, due to a serious injury. liiiiiiini-iiniin fc- ' -. 1-ETER GRAVA —mm EDWARD D ( ). ( )1 RIO A. (;iE ' FIORENTINO | On the following Saturday, Everett defeated its next foe Weymouth, by a twelve to two margin. In this game Everett passed and rushed its way into con- tention for the Greater Boston Interscholastic football league title. The Crimson showed class on the ground and in the air. The first came after a sustained seventy three yard march, Dick Tammaro going over from a yard out. Co-captain Bill Vetrano and John McCarthy bore the brunt of the ball carrying in the drive, each taking turns ripping up the Weymouth line. The second score came via air with lozza passing for the T. D. The next, under the lights, proved unforti nate for the Crimson. A strong Maiden Catholic team handed Everett its second loss, eighteen to nothing. The first half proved unfruitful and any hopes that Everett had of staging a second half comeback were blasted when the third period was only a minute old as Catholic ' s fullback dashed 81 yards from scrimmage for the third score. In this game two Crimson men were hospitalized. Dick Tammaro sufTered a severe head injury while John McCarthy sufTered an abdominal injury. Everett ' s next opponent was a rugged Medford team to whom they lost a thrilUer, twelve to seven. The Crimson faced Medford with two stars, John McCarthy and Dick Tammaro. benched with injuries from the previous game. A third back, Lou Lopilato, was also out with injuries. Everett went into a seven to nothing lead in the first half during which time lozza and Trin- gale were injured. In the second half, Everett, minus the services of quarterback Johnny lozza, was unable to increase the score. Although Everett once again entered the winner ' s circle by downing a mediocre Rindge Tech 21-0, they sufTered the loss of two veteran backs, Dick Tammaro and John McCarthy. Diminutive sophomore halfback, Tony Pa:quariello broke into the lineup with a bang by scoring two touchdowns in less than four minutes. Everett ' s first score by Bill Vetrano was enough for the victory over Rindge. Everett dropped out of contention for the G. B. I. crown when it lost a real heartbreaker to Quincy. With the game all but over, Quincy completed a desperation pass to the one yard line, secured the T. D. and passed successfully for the winning extra point, sneaking by 19-18. Vetrano, McCarthy and Pasquariello moved the ball for Everett under lozza ' s capable commands. Everett ' s defense rallied around Ralph Jannino and Joe Herlihy. Everett High closed out its 1954 season with a neat 13-0 victory over Thanksgiving Day rival Chelsea, sparked by the passing of sophomore sensation, Johnny lozza, and the running of veteran Bill Vetrano. Johnny completed four straight passes in the second half for the score as he played his best game of the season. Ed D ' Onorfio bulled over for the next T. D. from about the one yard line. Bill Vetrano was awarded a trophy for the best Everett back of the game while Ralph Jan- nino received the best line man trophy. In the finale of their high school football careers, Bill Vetrano, John McCarthy, and Joe Herlihy repre- sented the Crimson in the All-Star game at Haverhill. The Suburban All-Stars emerged victorious due to the sparkling all-round play of these boys. McCarthy via PAUL lANUZZI LEFT TO RIGHT, Seated — Sal Rauseo, Robert Sansone, Donald Reddington, Joseph Raso, Captain; Bruce Lewis, Fred Milton, Frank Pryor. Standing — Robert Moynihan, Manager; Ronald Marotta, George Catarius, Peter Boyages, Russel O ' Brien, Anthony Cuilla, Mr. Putnam. The pre-season prediction of Coach Putnam that we were to have a pretty good ball team was lived up to. The lack of height was our greatest obstacle and this was to be our downfall against the two tallest teams in the league, Somerville and Quincy. In pre-league competition we won two out of three, defeating Reading and Newton and losing to VValtham. These three meetings gave a pretty fair picture of the season to come, for we had a good group of ball handlers and team players and loads of spirit. During the league season each team was met twice, at home and away. Med- ford was defeated on both occasions by the score of 64-56 in the first game and 69-58 in the second. Captain Joe Raso led the attack in the first contest with 25 points and 18 points in the second game later in the season. Outstanding in the Everett cause also were Sal Rauseo, Bob Sansone, Ed Murray and Don Reddington. Next came Somerville, the favored team in the league. Why they were favored was soon found out. The entire squad seemed to tower over the Everett Midgets and we were to realize we were no match for them. Somerville won both games by the lop-sided score of 66-47 and 80-29. It has been a long time since any team licked an Everett team by fifty points. On even terms we could give any of them a rim as we proceeded to down Maiden twice in very closely contested games. In the first game with five seconds left to play Tony Cuilla sank the winning basket to put us on top 45-44. It couldn ' t be much closer. In the second game, once again a thriller all the way, Maiden held the lead up to the last minute, once again to be ditched by one point. This time it was 63-62 with Rauceo toss- ing in the winning basket with seconds to go. Our arch rival Chelsea seems to have lost the zip that was once theirs. In the first game Everett drove all the way and proved to be far superior as the score of 51-26 proved. In the second meeting Chelsea seemed to have come a long way during the season and we were the winners by only six point;, 45-39. Again it was Captain Joe Raso and Sal Rauseo doing the bulk of the scoring, but greatly aided by the play making of Reddington and Murray. Quincy, the second tallest team in the league, was superior in both contests winning the first 49-36 and the second 52-44. Captain Raso stood out in defeat. Revere fell victim to our heroes in the first meeting by the score of 67-41, but in a complete reversal of form smothered us by the score of 73-59.. This was the final straw which was to keep us out of the tourney. Our first meeting with Lowell was disastrous for the visiting team when our boys swarmed over them to the tune of 90-58. This was the biggest score by an Everett team in many years. In the second contest to wind up the season once again we bombed them to the tune of 84-61. A review of the season ' s work shows that we were on the long end of the record with eleven wins and six losses. The undivided honors were truly hard to determine with such outstand ing players as Capt. Raso, Rauseo, Boyagis, Lewis, Reddington, Pryor, Murray, Ciulla, and Sansone all stri in i for team work and perfection. Lest we forget, congratulations to our manager, Robert Moynihan, for a job well done. LEFT TO RIGHT, Seated — Paul Manganaro, Louis Lapilato, Oscar DiNino, Kepneth Webber, Captain; Robert Boyd, Patrick Catalano, Alex DiNino. Standing — James Paisley, Robert May, Frank Messina, George Mitche. Riddled by the loss of most of the point scorers by graduation, the out-look for the track team is not too bright. Lettermen returning are Captain Kenneth Webber, Carmen DeCarlo and Oscar DeNino. However, there are many juniors and several sophomores who should come into their own and prove their worth. Considering the fact that we do not enjoy the luxury of an indoor track, it is rather difficult to step out into fast company in the spring and to our best. Never- theless, as in the past, we shall enjoy our share of victories. This year the team meets Maiden, Revere, Chelsea, and Somerville in dual meets and will participate in the State Relays at Belmont, the Metropolitan Meet in Cambridge, and the State Meet at White Memorial Stadium in Boston. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17.
